Roger Ebert is Throwing a "Overlooked Film Festival"!

Published at:  Mar 05, 1999 3:20:17 PM CST

Well, looks like ol Roger Ebert is throwing a little ol Film Fest of his own to help a grand old theater. He's showing 10 films, which will cost ya $30 bucks (for all ten, not each). I've seen a few of the films, and I'd have to agree with him on each of them. Specifically SURENDER DOROTHY and HOUSEHOLD SAINTS. These were a pair of films that were... quite honestly overlooked on the festival circuit. And... for all you geeks out there.... He's showing TRON. If it's the same print that was shown here in Austin.... Well... It's a gorgeous print. There is literally nothing cooler than watching TRON on the big screen. Click on her link to explore Ebert's fest... and have fun!

Hellllooooo Harry dollink!!!

Are you a Roger Ebert "fan?" (I sure am!!) Have you heard about the
"Overlooked Film Festival" that he's hosting here in Champaign, Illinois
on April 21-25? It sounds reallllly interesting and I can hardly wait
to see it. (And it _just_ might (barely) provide enough excitement to
get me through the last couple weeks before 'The Phantom Menace' comes
out!!! :::grin:::) Here's the Festival's website address if you want
more info:

www.uiuc.edu/unit/pa/ebertfest/

There are ten films (I think) scheduled to be shown, and there are
supposed to be seminars, too, so you ought to check it out!! The
Festival is taking place in a really cool, really grand old theater
("The Virginia") that we're trying to renovate, and part of the proceeds
from the Festival will go towards reviving this "Lovely Lady." :) A
Festival Pass is only $30.00, so that's not too bad a deal, and hotels
are pretty reasonable here in middle-of-nowhere Illinois, too...

    Battleship Potemkin?

    by shadowdancer

After looking over the list of films to be shown, I was puzzled by the inclusion of "Battleship Potemkin." As an acknowldeged motion picture master piece, one of the 10 best movies ever made, a film that is relentlessly studied and debated at film schools, I don't think it really qualifies as an overlooked movie.

I live close enough (Minneapolis) for a nice weekend trip to Chicagoland, but that's my birthday weekend, and I'm already renting a theater here and showing "Dolemite".

    Addendum.

    by ryan_a

The scooper neglected to mention that the Virginia Theater seats something like 1200, and there's really not a bad seat in the place, so there's room for tons of folks. A couple years ago, Ebert was in town for the University Of Illinois Cyberfest, and hosted a showing of 2001 in that very theater, in 70mm, no less. It's worth the trip, even if we are in the middle of nowhere.

    by purpled

This is too wierd. I mean I go to cool news and look what I find-- there is a film festival and it is gonna be five miles away!! When I moved in to my dorm I thought there would be nothing interesting in Champaign, especially coming here for school from a suburb of Washington, DC. I mean there is nothing but cornfieds for miles! This sure is surprising.

    God Bless Roger Ebert

    by justin sane

It's a sin to destroy old theaters, and just as bad, destroying drive-ins. Roger Ebert is a great man for helping out an old theater and I would send him a handshake through my computer if I could.
They recently tore town a drive-in near where I live and I was extremely saddened because I have so many great memories of it... like when my mom and dad took the kids to go and see the double feature of Clash Of The Titans paired bizarrely with Cheech N' Chong's Next Movie. Being a five-year-old at the time, though, I was more interested in watching The Fox And The Hound (on another screen) with NO SOUND during Cheech and Chong.
The last films I saw there were Rob Roy and Die Hard With A Vengeance, which saddens me because the night before it was shut down, they played a ton of old 50s sci-fi movies there. I had to work, so unfortunately I missed it.
In any case, the point of the story is that when something like that is closed down, it effects you because you know that you'll never be able to sit there again and enjoy films... you'll have to sit and enjoy them in an 80-screen megaplex. Let's keep the movie palaces alive, guys...

suprised dark city is not there

    by spike lee

I'm a huge fan of Siskel and Ebert, and I'm glad to see that Roger is carrying on the show after the passing of Gene. On the list of films, I remembered Roger praising Shiloh, about an abused dog, and liked him giving a shot out to Tron. Where is Dark City? Roger picked this as his top film of 1998, and said it would be an instant classic. He even did a shot by shot analysis on the DVD version. I was suprised not to see it there.

    I Hate Fat Fuck

    by american psycho

My fellow film geeks and I call Roger Ebert "Fat Fuck". Now, this is for obvious reasons, but it goes beyond that. My friend had a Video Guide Encyclopedia or whatever they're called signed by Ebert, and everytime we go looking through it for a movie, we discover some giant ommision in the text. For example, while looking for Roger's review of "The Shining", we were shit out of luck when we found that there was no review of "The SHining". However, in the spot where a review of Stanley Kubrick's horror-masterpiece was a review of the Roseanne Barr/ Meryl Streep film "She Devil". Now, what self-respecting movie fan would leave a review of The Shining out of his book in favor of a She Devil review? Thus, we call Ebert's book "Fat Fuck's Guide to SHit I don't Know anything About". Now, I realize that alot of you ouit there have a lot of respect for our little pal Rog, but I really must take this opprotunity to tear into Rog.

Those movies were 9 years apart, though.

    by wolfpack

Perhaps it only covered flicks from a certain time period, or only ones Ebert saw.
