ALTERNATIVE or HIP HOP.... and that just doesn't have the ring....

FROM TV TO FILM NEWS: Warner Bros. is developing a big screen version
of FAMILY AFFAIR. The creators of the original series Sid and Marty
Krofft will produce with John Hughes. Howard Deutch (PRETTY IN PINK)
will direct.

First, I would like to add a correction to last week's recap. I
wrote the Ron Howard directed-HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS starring
Jim Carrey would be released on Thanksgiving but failed to mention the
year. That year would be 2000 as opposed to 2001 or, much less, this
year.

The biggest news of the week would have to be the Spider Man news.
(Even moreso than the Lewinsky interview it seems.) I never would have
guessed it would be resolved so quick. Now, do we want Sony to take
their time to help ensure a good flick, or do we want them to hurry up
and get SOMETHING out there? Me? I choose the former. *** FAMILY
AFFAIR and JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS? When are we going to see DALLAS on
the big screen? Who could be J.R.? *** SCREAM 3 seems to be on track
possibly ready for the December release date mentioned a couple of weeks
ago. *** Michael Bay and PHONE BOOTH. Comments? *** It looks as if
Jim Carrey will sooner be the Grinch as opposed to Mr. Limpet. ***
NEXT FRIDAY...a sequel we should've seen comin'. Intriguing. ***
George Clooney and the Coen Bros. A collaboration that may surpass the
Clooney/Soderbergh adventure last year. *** John Turteltaub's plate is
getting full. *** Redford's project sounds realy cool. Anyone read
the book?

About two more weeks 'til spring. Woo-hoo!

Keep the emails comin'. Until next week....

    Phone Booths and Fridays

    by angus

PHONE BOOTH: Sounds like a bad SNL skit; NEXT FRIDAY: Can they still afford Chris Tucker? Pointless, otherwise; SPIDER-MAN: This is one of those projects I've heard so much speculation on "what they should do..." and NONE of it sounds any good! I can't even imagine what a decent Spider-Man flick would be. Have you ever read the 1980s script, where he goes on David Letterman, fights Hulk Hogan and sings with Charo? Atrocious!

    Lotso News!

    by lynnbracken

Thanks for all the info - I'm almost overloading. A questions: any news on the plot of Cherry Falls? I've heard squat about it until now. Whasit about?
Also, Harry, how many signs of the Apocalypse are there? Are we close? Or will one more do it? How about a big screen version of "Three's Company"? Or better yet, straight from the funnies, "Family Circus, The Movie"?
And the Spiderman stuff. Good lord, have you read the postings from the last few days? I'll just reiterate my thoughts - please no big budget monstrosity with no plot. (Haven't we all suffered enough i.e. Batman & Robin?) Re casting - Casey Affleck or Nick Brendon for Spiderman. Barry Sonnenfeld for director. Just thoughts.

    Vertical Limit=CliffHanger

    by ursel

The plot of vertical limit sounds all too close to that of the above mentioned Stallone vehicle.

As for the Coen Brothers flick, what happened to their adaptation of "To the White Sea"? I am a fan of the novel and was looking forward to seeing them attempt to make a dialogue free film.

    Harry's Signs of the Apocalypse

    by harry knowles

According to my personal belief on the end of the world and the signs of it's impending destruction... there are 35 signs of the Apocalypse. HOWEVER, there are Signs of Coolness that can counter each and every 'end of the world' sign. For example.... Let's take the Josie and the Pussycats as a sign of the Apocalypse. Now... let's say that Martin Scorsese or George Miller gets tapped to direct SPIDER-MAN.... well then... Who really gives a shit about JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS.... and destruction of potential brain lobes and society in general is averted. Amazing how all of this works eh?

    Josie and the Pussycats!

    by glitterstar180

Josie and the Pussycats is waaay cool and I can't wait for the live-action movie and if it's really the world-ending event that Harry says it is, hey what better way to end it than watching women in those costumes play in a band and giggle about boys? Seriously, I loved J&TP when I was a kid and watch them on the Cartoon Network when they're on. Like it or not, those old Hanna-Barbera cartoons make a lot of us twenty-somethings smile.

    CHERRY FALLS

    by elston gunn

From what I have read this movie is about a psychopath who murders virgins from Cherry Falls High and how the town deals with the murderer after they are identified. Hope this helps.

That helps. I forgot to check ImDB. I'll see if there's something there also.

Cherry Falls sounds like it has definite potential...

    by severen

Especially with Michael "one of the most under-rated actors of recent years" Biehn starring and direction from Geoffrey 'Romper Stomper' Wright, this could be seriously cool, here's hoping that it turns out as cool as it sounds. On a side note has anyone heard any news of the two Michael Biehn flicks listed on the IMDB (that have been there for months) 'Wonderland' (where Biehn would be playing porn star John "mine's bigger than yours, cock" Holmes) or 'Susan's Plan' (written and directed by the once great John Landis, and also featuring Nastassja Kinski, Billy Zane, Lara Flynn Boyle, Dan Aykroyd, Rob Schneider, Bill Duke, Thomas Haden Church and highlander Adrian Paul). Hopefully one of the above roles will be enough to get Michael Biehn finally 'noticed' by the powers that be,
after all with the equally cool Bill Paxton's career really taking off in the last couple of years it shows that there's always hope.

    Dallas

    by spike lee

The first five seasons of Dallas was very well written and acted, when the show starts over its rotation on tnn, be sure to catch it from the beginning. As for the movie, they should have a young cast, and get Neil Lebute (company of men, your friends and neighbours) to write and direct.

    Cherry Falls -- Sigh

    by lmfcadw

The screenplay is pretty much tasteless. Hopefully the script will be worked on a lot. The identity of the killer was too too easy to figure out and the huge teen orgy party at the end was revolting.
But I'm sure it'll get its hormone driven audience.

scream 3 / randy and phone booth

    by martin q blank

    1) In a perfect world, the storyline for 'Scream 3' ends as follows : they take of the killer's mask and it's... RANDY! Turns out he faked his death (ala 'Scream 1') and has been involved in the murders since the beginning! Now that would be the ultimate way to complete a series. (Kevin Williamson says he killed Randy to shock us, so why not bring him back to do the same?) PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE. 2) Although 'Phone Booth' sounds potentially very cool, doesn't it go to show how wasteful with money Michael Bay is. 10 million for a one location film? Gimmeabreak.

Man, another Friday movie...Hell yah. That's what I am talkin' 'bout. My only hesitation is if they make the movie without Chris Tucker. Come on, he was the funniest character in the first one. How can it be friday without Smokey????

    Phone Booth

    by stutang

I think it's great that Micheal Bay is actually working on a pic that only costs $10 MILLION. This way he'll have to be a bit more masterful in his approach and we may not see so much flash, which gets tiring quick. Now we should be able to see what he's really made of. This was definitely a good choice for him, considering the limits of the main character (who, as I understand it, stands in a phone booth for most of the film).

    Adam Worth

    by abhay

The Redford picture is based on a decent true-crime book; I'm halfway through it. Adam Worth was the real-life inspiration for Professor Moriarty; a very sophisticated gentleman-criminal. There's an interesting love triangle in the book- two guys sharing a wife amiably for a little while, basically: not sure how they'll deal with that. A movie might be a good deal of fun if done right. Could also be a bore- depends. Depends... Lots of other fun characters, so casting should be interesting. Good idea having Worth played by Redford though...

    Carrey as Spidey?

    by w. leach

The Monitor section of the latest Entertainment Weekly (March 12) explains that the "Spider Man" project will move forward. Who has "reportedly expressed interest" in starring in the film? Jim Carrey! (No joke)
