"Dr. Who" lost episodes: latest rumor debunked / pic of Atkinson as "The Doctor" / "The Avengers" ((animated)) corrections !!!

Published at:  Mar 04, 1999 8:04:20 AM CST

Glen here...

...with a little follow-up to several reports posted earlier in the week.

WHO

There have been rumors flying around the Net all week about "lost" episodes of Doctor
Who
having been uncovered in Canada, or something to that effect. The rumor was so
persistent, it even made it to Coaxial (the article has now been deleted to avoid confusion in the future).

As far as I have been able to gather from all concerned, there is no truth to the rumors
that any lost Doctor Who episodes have been recovered - save for the one episode found in
New Zealand a few months back. This most recent rumor has also been addressed & denied
pointedly by folks at BBC.

This is a healthy reminder to readers of the page, and users of the Net in general: when
something is specified as rumor, it's generally wise to remember it is such until it has
been more pointedly confirmed or refuted. Judging from my Inbox, a lotta people got stirred-up for
no good reason, and are now rather disappointed.

ATKINSON AS WHO

Following-up
yesterday's report that Rowan Atkinson (Mr. Bean, Blackadder) will
play The Doctor in an upcoming U.K. Comic Relief special.

Here's a picture of Atkinson as The Doctor, backed by a Dalek. In My Humble Opinion, Atkinson is looking pretty damn sharp, there.

SPECIAL THANKS to David Howe. I swiped this image from his web site,

AVENGERS

I need to clarify / correct a HREF="http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=3134">
previous post.

In said post, I indicated Chris Bachelo was responsible for The Avengers designs HREF="http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=3134">recently seen on Coaxial.

Seems Bachelo has apparently done some conceptual art for the new Avengers
animated series, but the images I posted were not the product of his work.

Now, something which might make Avengers fans a little happier than they have been
since seeing the designs to which I refer:

The artwork I
posted were indeed some loose conceptual designs from the series, but may not be as
representative of the final product as we were first lead to believe. In other words - it may not look
as dopey as the artwork suggests!

This should make many people quite happy - I was amazed at the amount of scornful e-mail I
got articulating fan's dislike of those designs.

The previously posted
artwork
also does not represent the entire line-up of heroes for the series, who will include (in
no particular order):

** Ant Man / Giant Man / Yellowjacket

** Wasp

** Tigra

** The Vision

** Wonderman

** Hawkeye

** The Falcon

So there you have it - hope this makes Avengers fans a little more comfortable. Sorry
ofr the mix-up here. There were a series of honest miscommunications which basically had
all sources ending up right, but at the wrong points in time. I think we've got the
misunderstandings cleared up now.

As previously stated on Coaxial, The Avengers is still headed towards a Fall 1999
debut, about the same time as Spiderman Unlimited hits the air.

Atkinson kicks sooooooooooo much ass. Everything that I have seen him in has just been absolutely hilarious. My favorite is Black Adder. This has to be good.

    real Avengers art

    by darthkoshi

While this series looks like it will be "ForceWorks" instead of "Avengers," you can soothe your eyes from the unpleasantness, and see gorgeous Avengers cover art by Perez and others, colored by Tom Smith, at the Avengers Assemble! Website:

screw Avengers, Justice League will kick ass

    by sting

I think it would be great to see Beetle, Green Lantern, etc. I doubt this is Marvel. But since DC is making a comeback with Batman and Superman, why not expand into this unexplored universe. Justice League is the perfect group to show a shitload of superheroes with coo storiez.

    Where's my Scarlet Witch?

    by rayb

    Ant Man?
    The Falcon?

Who in the world cares about these heroes... talk about Stooooooooooooooooooopid!

Where's my Scarlet Witch!? (Her powers are far too cerebral to allow on a Fox animated series, few comic writers could write her powers well, either... ;-( )

    The perfect target

    by rayb

Dr. Who is the perfect target for Mr. Atkinson. I love his humor, and it has the same cheese appeal that Dr. Who had... trust me there's plenty in that show to make fun of... Hehehehe... just remembering the show Dr. Who makes me laugh... I think it'd be funny if they switched actors midway through as a gag...

BBC still interested in DR WHO

    by orac_uk

Whether this years Comic Relief Who sketch will erase and rewind the awful memory of Dimensions in Time, remains to be seen. But judging by the promo photo of Atkinson as the Doctor, this could prove to be a very watchable 20 minutes!
The fact that the old Who producer JNT has nothing to do with it, we could well be looking at a taster of something to come (?).
Us UK Who fans are very encouraged by this latest development. It shows that the Beeb have not forgotten about Dr Who. And to those who have been pouring scorne on AICN coverage of this classic series... get a brain or stick to Star Trek.
This is the best news to come our way after the awful news of Crusade's cancellation and the missing Who episode debacle.
LONG LIVE QUALITY SCI-FI...AND BABYLON 5 WILL RETURN!!!!!

Add Scarlet Witch to above list?

    by drjekyll

Glen, could you please add the Scarlet Witch to the above list so people don't have aneurysms and heart attacks right after reading it? 8D

I can't wait for this series to air. It couldturn out to be crap or it could be at least as passable as the early X-Men episodes, but at least it will work the Avengers into the consciousness of every school age kid, and that is goal enough.

    Justice League

    by paul nichols

Sorry to dissapoint you, but there won't be an animated JLA series. At least not for several years. It seems that the television rights for the JLA were acquired by some company that made a really bad pilot back in '92 or '93 or sometime back then. Anyway because it was so bad it was never shown on any sort of television network, so the JLA liscence is tied up in that property. All this cortesy of Wizard magazine. I think it's the one with like four covers or something. Inside there are some cool conceptual art of the JLA drawn by Bruce Timm that kicks ass. And while I'm on the subject of Bruce Timm, wasn't the episode of Batman Beyond with the Terrific Trio a rip-o... er I mean a great homage to the Fantastic Four. I thought it was really well done. Well so much for me, hope I didn't spoil everyone's dream of a JLA series.

    JLA and Bachalo

    by blinkboy

A-HA!! I knew an artist as incredible as Chris Bachalo would never shat upon a drawing board with those horrible images!! Also, I remember reading an interview with Paul Dini, writer and producer of the Batman and Auperman cartoons, in which he said that as much as he'd love to get a Justice League cartoon on the air, a bunch of editorial policies and whatnot were preventing it. Damn, woulda' been one helluva' show.

    Atkinson/Dr Who Video Release?

    by maniacalmichael

Is there any chance there might be an official video release of the Dr. Who segment from BBC's Comic Relief? Otherwise, I see it turning up as a bootleg video on convention tables for years to come. A real release would be nice if only so the quality would be good & some of the monies could go to the charities Comic Relief supports. There ought to be a wide enough market for it.

Don't knock the JLA movie if you haven't seen it

    by forty-two

What is with this constant persecution on the JLA film?

It wasn't that bad. I got a copy for about 20$ Canadian... and it was worth it.

Yes, it was goofy. Yes, it didn't pay much atention to comicbook continuuum(what does now days?). It was still alright.
I thought the pics looked like crap too, but hey it grows on you.

Had CBS aired it I am sure that it would have garnished some public interest. The Green Lantern/Guy Gardner effects were more than worth it.

    I don't know...

    by verger

... who Orac_uk is, but I like his taste. While I'm just a wee bit trepidacious about Rowan Atkinson in the role (this could be way too far over the top), the fact that JNT is *not* involved and that we might actually get to see more Who someday... well that's antidote to almost any bad news (almost any: RIP Stanley Kubrick). I've certainly had a bit of despair for TV SF lately, what with Crusade going away. Once again all of the SF shows with a brain have been killed...

    Black Adder in the Tardis!

    by paxnirvana

Rowan will kick TimeLord butt as the Doctor. The picture is PERFECT! Heck, if Sylvester (the weasel-down-the-pants guy) McCoy can do it, Rowan can do it better! And with STYLE. Imagine Baldrick as his Companion? Even better!

I'd gladly pay reasonably (and I know AT LEAST five other friends who would too) for a QUALITY copy of these 20 minute segments (heard there were three of them planned) and would really appreciate it if the money could go to the charity involved. (Wink, wink, nudge, nudge to anyone with BBC connections!)

Amen to the demise of JNT's control (and of whiny girl companions in spandex with him). Maybe the good Doctor can make a comeback soon! Can't imagine why the BBC won't revive this money-maker anyway!
