Jim Hill Has Some Fascinating Details On Pixar’s WALL-E!!

Published at:  Feb 28, 2007 6:28:56 AM CST

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

I think I’m going to be at Pixar at the end of the week, and while I’m there, I’ll nose around a bit and see if I can learn anything about the next few films they have planned. I’m guessing they’ll have things locked down pretty tight, of course.

Thankfully, Jim Hill’s got some juicy tidbits about what we can expect from Andrew Stanton’s follow-up to FINDING NEMO, the robot story called WALL-E.

It’s definitely worth popping over there to take a look.

That's one hell of a bold move from Pixar. Good to see them tackle any kind of material that has a promising good story and character to work on and not just buckles on the hype of farting animals animation that is so popular amongst the other studios. I'm intrigued.

I love all the Pixar movies, but it's great to hear that they're beginning to get brave enough to step away from the 'Cars' mold of animated moviemaking. Wall-E sounds challenging, intelligent, and adult as all get out. Can't wait.

I can't believe I'm saying this about a concept for a Pixar movie, but I am.

I mean, a heavy environmental message? "Incompetent" corporations? Fat, blob-like humans who live in space?

Is this a Pixar movie, or socialist propaganda?

It's so hip and cool to make fun of humans cos we suck

    by doctor_sin

Yes - don't bother trying to educate people of how things could be if we only wanted them to be. Don't bother investing any trust in future generations to learn from our (and older) mistakes. Don't bother to think that maybe people of this future age don't think the same as us, because of their lives. Don't worry about trying to expose humankind for all its varied forms. Don't rush to paint all fat people as lazy, slovenly, and uncaring.Anyway, this movie looks cool, but sounds like the typical cookie-cutter plot we always get. Disappointing. They could have tried something original or unique rather than following some checklist of things to include.Oh well, part of it sounded like it was going to encroach on my sci-fi short story idea I'm working on, but it diverges from my plot on a couple main issues, so I'm safe. I'll just move mine to a far-future setting.

I say any film about the future needs to be positive. For example, one set in a society in which we solved all our problems and developed the ability to puke unicorns which in turn fart rainbows. It's a puked up unicorn rainbow fart future everyone!

Good for Pixar. As a fan of science fiction, I'm glad they decided to put out a dramedy utilizing their seamless animation and storytelling techniques. This film sounds more out there than anything else I've seen by Pixar, which is great.

    Go Pixar

    by gengrievous82

Man, some crazy negative comments out there. Some of them make it sound like Pixar intentionally went out and drove over their dog. Sheesh. A lot of them are sore at how humans are going to be portrayed in the film. Humans have about as many good qualities as they do bad. Better we focus on the bad as our good qualities are what we've already accomplished in the whole quest for self-improvement thing. That's what this film is doing and I'll be in line for it. Oh, and there was nothing wrong with Cars. May not have been Pixar's strongest (fell just a bit under Bug's Life for me), but it was still lightyears beyond anything Dreamworks or that shitty animation house behind Hoodwinked can do. It's nice knowing Pixar is going for the more mature approach. Hopefully we'll get something even more radical when Brad Bird's Raygun project takes off.

I know that humans have a lot of bad qualities. That's why stories have villains: they embody the negative aspects of humanity.

we wouldn't be in this state at the moment, would we? Oh that's right, apparently everything's cool and it's all a green leftie conspiracy. Forgot for a minute. Wow. No-one complains every time a Miyaazki movie comes out. Must be too subtle.

    The "environmental thing"

    by doctor_sin

It's just handled in such an obvious, hamfisted way in these current CGI-toons. Anyone ever go see "Pocahontas"? I took my little niece to it - man, kids were running all over creation during the "tree-hugger" speeches about loving earth or whatever. It just wasn't entertaining as it felt like church or school. Who wants an 80-90 minute lecture in a dark theater with overpriced snacks? Wait - I described my college career. All I was pointing out is that these things tend to illustrate the problem in simplistic, cookie-cutter ways. The Earth as a giant garbage dump, while fat and lazy people float around on a spaceship? Can we be anymore propagandistic and single-minded? Where are the lazy thin people? Where are the activists who would never allow the Earth to be a single giant landfill? Where are the people of the future, while not "solving all our problems" in some outdated Utopian fantasy, who have developed beyond our way of thinking/looking at the world? I just don't see the magic and wonder in this story that it has potential for.

and just like that, spaceworlder's credibility

    by novaman5000

on this site exploded into a billion little pieces. "Myazaki also sucks"? This is gonna be a tough crowd to sell that to. 1) Humanity can be the badguys in movies, god forbid. Alot of us are assholes, why pretend otherwise? Alot of us are fat, lazy blobs now. Alot of us don't give a shit about the planet, either. Satire often exaggerates for the sake of making a point, and that seems to be what this is doing. 2) While i don't think he's god or anything, Miyazaki is consistantly original with his animated films. Maybe A Shark's Tale would be more your taste?

This film sounds like a slick and(despite what a few are claiming on here) pretty original little story. I'm interested in how it will shape up. Plus, really like the WALL-E character design.
And Dr. Sin, we've read about a page synopsis of the first THIRD of the film. I'd be willing to bet money that humanity will play a bigger part than just one note fat blobs.

And just like that, someone attacked me

    by spaceworlder

    for having an opinion.
I find Miyazaki's films to be boring. Visually stunning, perhaps, but boring.
I'd also like to say that I have yet to run into someone in real life who doesn't care about the planet. If the public wasn't concerned with the environment, why would politicians bother with feigning "pro-environmental" positions?
