Monahan + Scorsese, Part 2! Throw in a pinch of Mick Jagger and you have THE LONG PLAY!!!

Published at:  Feb 27, 2007 11:15:31 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with the second DEPARTED-themed story of the day. This one involving William Monahan again, but instead of DiCaprio and another Andy Lau remake we have Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese.

Scorsese is packing a lot on his plate right now, but every project his name is announced as attached to sounds interesting, so I can't complain.

The flick in question is called THE LONG PLAY, a rock-n-roll epic that Scorsese is in line to direct, Monahan is in line to rewrite and Jagger is in line to produce. All based on an idea by Mick Jagger.

Paramount has it right now. The film would follow two friends through over 40 years in the music business, starting in the early days of R&B and going through modern hip-hop. Since Variety also mentioned the "rock-n-roll epic" part, one would assume it'll encompass that aspect as well. This is a weird-sounding project. Not the premise so much as the people attached to make it happen. Count me intrigued.

A Goodfellas style, cocaine fueled, swooping steadicam romp through 40 years of rock and roll history! This will make Boogie Nights look like a student film if it ever happens.

This is NOT a weird choice for Marty.

    by barry egan

He has directed 2 great rock documentaries ("The Last Waltz" and the Dylan bio "No Direction Home") plus he has shot that yet to be released Stones docu. His films utulize pop/rock music about as well as anybody in film history. Anybody who actually knows something about Scorsese knows this a natural fit for him.

Amen To No More GIMME SHELTER...

    by buzz maverik

It's a great song, but, Marty, bubbe, the Stones have done other songs. Other groups have done other songs...This would be a good movie and I hope Monohan writes this instead of another Hong Kong remake (nothing wrong with 'em and looked how the last one turned out but I'd admire him more for doing something different)...With the music and Scorsese's repeated use of one song, have you noticed that the film brat generation is a little out of touch with their own music? I mean, THE LAST WALTZ not withstanding, these guys are encyclopedic in their knowledge of cinema, not music. Scorsese used Procol Haram's Whiter Shade O' Pale for his segment in NEW YORK STORIES but it seemed more cribbed from second-wave-film-brat Lawrence Kasdan in the big chill. I've heard that Spielberg has never had any interest in rock. Also, in the book KILLER INSTINCT, Jane Hamscher asserted that even though he directed THE DOORS, also-second-wave-film-brat Oliver Stone didn't know much about 60s music. Oddly, George Lucas (and his protege Kasdan) have been the ones to assemble the best soundtracks. Granted, AMERICAN GRAFFITI matched that era and George's musical knowledge might have stopped at that point. The important thing, of course, is that these guys know film but the same damned song over and over?

I love Scorsese, and this project makes sesne for him..

    by danielkurland

But with maybe 7 different movies in the last 4 months announced for him, it's getting a little harder to get excited, because obviously some aren't going to be done. It's getting kind of like what happened with Tarantino last year, except I'm sure Scorsese will actually start on one of these soon. And Scorsese loves to repeat music. Bringing Out the Dead uses You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory about 3 or 4 times through the movie.

    Scorsese and music

    by chishu_ryu

Scorsese IS a walking textbook when it comes to movie academia, but I wouldn't underestimate his knowledge of music, either. Much of that comes from his close association with former Band front-man Robbie Robertson, who helps Scorsese assemble many of his soundtracks. But Scorsese also grew up listening to music, obscure hits and popular ones alike, and he knew how to use this knowldege early on. Look at his first feature "Who's That Knocking At My Door?", which was practically a music video...

    Scorcese

    by cobbio

So Mick Jagger wants to make an "epic" movie about his life, eh? I mean, it sounds cool, I guess, but I'm kind of sick of rock and roll. I realize Scorcese is one of the best when it comes to making music-based films (The Last Waltz), but I'd rather see him direct a film about hip hop or speed metal or even klezmer. I'm tired of Rolling Stones-era rock. It's become elevator music to me, and I don't want Scorcese making a film about elevator music.
The other projects he's working on sound much more compelling. Then again, I'm just a voice from left field.

I like this idea quite a bit

    by franklin t marmoset

It will be hard to pull off, what with capturing all of those different eras of music, but if anyone can do it you'd think it would be Scorsese. As to the 'hip hop has hurt American culture' idea, I have to vote against that one. I'm not American, so maybe I'm not qualified to comment, but I don't think the music world would half as interesting without it. There's a lot of shit around these days (thanks, 50 cent), but I'd argue that hip hop has been a bigger and more important influence than punk. When the hell is someone going to make a Kool DJ Herc biopic? Or what about Afrika Bambaataa? That guy's life would make a great film.
