"Star Trek" DVD news / link to "Deep Space Nine" finale promo !!!

Published at:  Mar 04, 1999 7:07:25 AM CST

Glen here...

...with a little news concerning "the beginning of the end" for Star Trek: Deep Space
Nine
. Regular readers may recall that DS9 is, for all intents and purposes, coming to a
conclusion at the end of this season with a massive two hour season finale.

To set the stage for the big event, Paramount has started circulating a special "teaser" comprised
of footage from previous DS9 episodes. Said teaser (more or less) lets you know that
everything you've seen on Deep Space Nine "all comes down to this!", these final
moments.

The trailer (posted by www.vidiot.com) can be
accessed by CLICKING
HERE!

As a side note, anyone who has access to the finale's script, I sure would like to see it. Note
the P.O. Box address at the bottom of this page, and remember you can send to said box without a
return address (to preserve anonymity). If you want me to keep my mouth shut about having read it,
just say so. We do that all the time around here...

In other Trek news, HREF="http://www.gallifreyone.com">www.gallifreyone.com is reporting Paramount's intent
to release THE ORIGINAL SERIES on DVD beginning this Summer, shortly after the
much-maligned Star Trek: Insurrection bows on DVD in May.
It should be pointed out I have not been able to confirm or refute this information, but franlky, I've
not the sourcing to do so.

For more information about these releases, CLICK
HERE
to jump to the gallifreyone web site -
then find & click the Star Trek prompt /"button" to the right hand side of your screen. Similar information is also found at "the digital bits" web site.

    FIRST!!! WOOHOO!

    by campe98

Man, the orignal Star Trek on DVD. Another reason for me to buy a DVD Player. I also am really looking forward to the series finale. I can't wait to see how the plan to wrap everything up so quickly. Any ideas on how that's going to happen?

    finale

    by kev

There is only one way that I can see DS9 ending....badly, because every recent big event on that show for the past 3 years has been a let down, the only way they can redeem themselves is to be realistic and have some of the main cast die in the final conflict, that would be a very cool....
As much as it saddens me to say. maybe it SHOULD have ended after 5 seasons.

    by kd8on

Actually the final 9 episodes (10 hours) will wrap up the series not just the two hour final so Harry you need scripts for all 9 not just the final one.

    (smile)

As for TOS on DVD, it would be nice if they did the fans a favor and released 6 episodes per disc at $14.95 each. Come on Paramount we are talking a 30 plus year old series that you have milked dry. Do the fans a favor.....

    (like they will!)

The final fate of DS9's characters!

    by scottzilla

Captain Benjamin Sisko: after the culmination of the Dominion War and the final battle between the Prophets and the Pagh-Wraiths ended, the Bajoran Emissary accepts his place by birthright in the Celestial Temple and continues to ensure harmonious peace and prosperity for his Bajoran disciples.

Colonel Kira Nerys: with Bajor now a member of the Federation, the Colonel is offered a permanent military transfer to Starfleet and a rank of Captain. She accepts and assumes full command of Starfleet's newest starbase, Deep Space Nine. Her first order of business will be to oversee the dismantling of the former Cardassian station, Empok Nor, which will be reassembled on the Gamma Quadrant side of the Bajoran Wormhole.

Chief Miles O'Brien: with the day-to-day operations of Deep Space Nine left in good hands, O'Brien, as chief foreman, undertakes the daunting task of moving Empok Nor to its new location. With that considerable job complete he vows to resign from Starfleet and live on Earth with his wife and children.

Constable Odo: after witnessing the death of the Founders (and the Great Link) and the end to the Dominion, Odo decides to finally heed the words of the Changeling known as Laas. With his one true love too busy to devote enough time to him and with the knowledge he will eventually outlive her, he leaves DS9 in a runabout in search of the other 98 Changeling infants.

Dr. Julian Bashir: with his thirst for knowledge and his dedication to medicine, Dr. Bashir elects to build a first-rate medical facility on Deep Space Gamma (the former Empok Nor). He quickly builds a reputation as the leading authority on native Gamma Quadrant physiology and relishes the remaining time he has left with his best friend and holodeck partner, Chief O

    STAR TREK:DS9 blows chunks

    by mckracken

Good!! I was wondering when this series would make it back into coaxial. Hey look I **KNOW** that this series is favored and highly praised over ST:Voyager by the fans...and frankly I think (IMHO) it BLOWS CHUNKS!!! I watched that episode last week where they go into the holodeck to save a casino from Thugs. IT WAS STUPID!!! THAT WASNT SCI/FI!!! IT WAS LAME!! After all these seasons, Sisko still acted better as HAWK from "Spencer: for Hire" HE'S BORING!! HE'S SLOOOOOOOWWW. THIS IS NOT SCI/FI. Frankly, I can't see what the fans see in this stupid show AT ALL!ST:Voyager (as bad as it may be) is STILL about SCI/FI and STILL has characters that AREN'T SLOOOOOWWW!(IMHO) sure the plots of Voyager might be about lame stuff, but at least its got a decent captain and interesting supporting characters like Paris and Chakotee. I HATE Sisko as Captain...He puts me to SLEEP!! HE'S BORING! I'm glad that DS9 is ending...I hope they kill Captain Sisko off. The episode in the gambling casino was just plain stupid. (IMHO) Go on trekkie geeks, flame me, I think this show is Stupid.

I love the way this show drives people nuts...

    by ilvenshang

So-and-so's excited about the finale. So-and-so has written their own conclusion. So-and-so's offended because DS9 doesn't handle its major event stories "My Way", and wishes that it had ended back in the 5th season. Someone else thinks that DS9 isn't real science fiction and that Avery Brooks is boring - and repeats it several times, like a none-too-bright parrot.
Brooks you either love or hate or both (just like his show)
but he's not nearly as dull as Stewart or Mulgrew. As for DS9 not being scifi, well, Junior
here's a true story for you to chew on. John W. Campbell was famous for being the first editor of a SF magazine to browbeat his authors into writing like real writers, instead of like pulp hacks. When someone told him that there was no reason why scifi couldn't occupy its own niche as real literature, Campbell interrupted him. "This is sicence fiction," he said, throwing out his arms like a man measuring the one that got away. "This is literature," he held his index finger and thumb half an inch apart. "Science Fiction is much broader than just literature."
Moral of the story: There are many planets in the galaxy of Scifi, and room even for mean nasty little dramas-in-space like DS9

    Iivanshang -point taken

    by mckracken

for IIvanshang: you know your absolutly right about that bit about Sci/fi having a broader spectrum than literature. Its true, very true. Even DS9 has its place and I wish to make a simple correction to my last post: this past weeks Casino episode had LESS to do with sci/fi (and Trek) than previous episodes of ST:DS9. It was like watching a 20's style "Untouchables" episode. And "Untouchables" was FAR FAR away from sci/fi."get outta the holodeck simulations and back into the show". Of course the show itself *IS* sci/fi, I realize that. And I politely disagree with you that Patrick Stewart and Kate Mulgrew are more boring Captains than Avery Brooks (as Sisko)And I also state that the SHOW itself is not boring, just its Captain(I have even seen this quoted in TV Guide stating this from one of the cast members: "Avery Brooks throws a coat of dulless over the entire show"). So our opinions differ, and thats fine, it makes for a better argument. McK :O))

    Voyager-SPOILERS (about last night's ep.)

    by condorman111

Yeah, yeah, yeah. They'll kill off/transform some (Sisko, Odo, Kira), and save some for future use (Bashir in Sec. 31, Worf and O'Brien just bc they're better than any of the rest). Anyway, did anyone see Voyager last night, it was actually good! Cool twist on the alternate universe/time loop/two Voyagers/O'Brien being an unwitting clone of himself, etc., but pretty well executed.

    more thoughts...

    by condorman111

All Sisko needs now is sunglasses and a trench coat (and to lose the Riker-gut). And the casino ep. was really bad, especially when they imagined the perfect heist -- so you knew it wouldn't go right -- and then it pretty much went fine. Lame.

    O'Brien's clone

    by annie reed

Hey... someone other than me remembers that the "current" O'Brien is from another timeline! Cool. That will show Glen... he forgot all about once... (maybe he's an unwitting clone too, hmmm...) Thanks Condor!

    by ilvenshang

(cool ID, BTW, & I'm not just fishing for compliments :-) Anyway, I'm sorry if I seemed a little cross, people complaining about some aspect of DS9 are common; people doing so intelligently are rare! The fun of DS9 is in the controversy. B5 & the other Treks are like "Day the Earth Stood Still": their whole respective contents are geared towards 1 meaning, 1 uplifting message. DS9 is like "A Space Odyssey": you can sit and argue all day long about what it REALLY means & which aspects work & which don't!

    The REAL ending

    by rayb

It's all a dream of the Cisco writer of the 1950s. You all know it's true. They're going to pull our chains and slap us in the face and make us all hate the series forever and ever.

Trust me on this one... Ray (Who thinks all Deep Space Nine was one bad holodeck episode too many... ;-)

    O'Brien

    by condorman111

No....I don't think O'Brien is from another timeline (although Kim is!), unless I missed it. I was talking about the episode where O'Brien spends the whole episode thinking everyone's out to get him, and it turns out he is a clone of himself (but doesn't know it), with the real self being held hostage on the planet.

The future of star Trek (DS9, ST:TNG and ST:Voyager)

    by mckracken

DS9 is less of a "Space Oddessy" and more of a "Space Soap Opera" I remember way back before this show started, one reviewer said it was going to be "dirtier and grittier than its predecessors" meaning that the space station wasnt going to function correctly all the time, the hallways were going to be grungy, characters were going to fight and bicker and argue and not everything was going to have a happy ending like on ST:TNG. It was a giant space station taken up by the Federation abandoned by the cardasians (before they found out about that little wormhole thing). Well the Federation came in and cleaned it all up. I think I stopped watching it regularly when they started the whole Sisco is the devine deity of Bajor story, worf showed up and it was a big deal that DS9 actually had its own Klingon guy (Worf) and Defiant ship that was docked, and then Odo and the Founders and the changlings and the dominion came in. I watched that for a while....I lost intrest...how many times DID they blow up the wormhole anyway? I WOULD be interested in a DS9 Movie every other year rotating with the ST:TNG movies. Lets go back to making Star trek movies every year! and to think, if they added Voyager movies, we could have a new Trek movie every nine months...YAY!--McK :O) (hell that would be better than an ongoing TV show)

    My only prediction

    by simonjester

The only prediction I will make about the finale of DS9 is that Garak will kill Dukat, hopefully by poisoning or by stabbing him in the back. Garak may possibly die in the process, but he's going to do it. I have believed that this will happen ever since Garak said he wished he'd shot Dukat in the back when he had the chance.

O'Brian is from a alternate timeline

    by slim

It was when the Romulans were visiting and they brought a cloaked warbird. Because O'Brian was exposed to something he was being sent into the future where he saw DS9 being destroyed. He was given a massive dose of radiation and sent into the future and found out that the Romulans were responsable. They wanted to keep the Dominion out so they colapsed the wormhole. Needless to say O'Brian dies of radiation poison but before he buys it he sends his alternate self back.

    Another DS9 finale idea

    by chapaev

    The DS9 finale(sorry,I couldn't resist):
The Pah-wraiths gain control of the wormhole with the help of Gul Dukat.Through Dukat they pronounce themselves true gods of Bajor and Cardassians as their all-powerful priests. The wraiths agree to allow the main Dominion forces into the Alpha Quadrant soon.
Sisko has a vision in which the Prophets tell him that they are incapacitated and powerless to deal with the threat. They also reveal that the Pah-wraiths are planning to change the location of the Alpha Quadrant entry to the wormhole to new co-ordinates - near Earth.A vast Dominion fleet would then exit the wormhole and make a surprise attack. The wraiths would be able to implement their plan in the next 24 hours.
All Dominion and Cardassian forces in the Alpha Quadrant are reported to be on the move towards the wormhole and DS9.Heads of allied forces meet at DS9 where Sisko informs them of the situation.Earth defences are no match for the Dominion fleet and it would take too long to assemble forces there. The only way out is to destroy the wormhole - to move DS9 close to the entry point, enter the wormhole and detonate the station. The resulting explosion would obliterate any ships in the vicinity and could also be catastrophic for Bajor.Sisko has to choose between Earth and Bajor.
Time is running out and Sisko decides to go ahead with the plan.Allied fleets prepare for what could be a suicide mission. We get the feeling that Sisko hadn't told others everything about his plan.Non-essential personnel evacuates DS9.Odo disappears and seems to defect to the Dominion.Sisko is confronted by furious Kira who appeals to the Emissary not to risk Bajor. The argument turns into a fight and Kira is placed under arrest.
The Dominion/Cardassian forces arrive at the scene and a vicious fight ensues.Amid the fighting,DS9 is slowly making its way towards the wormhole, escorted by several allied vessels ....
    (No idea what happens next)

    The DS9 finale: some predictions...

    by jerk_sisko

Here's my guesses about the DS9 finale; I'm betting Odo will be written out bacause a Bajoran officer would be hard to use in a forthcoming DS9/TNG movie, but I don't see any of the other major characters dying. Garak or Rom or somebody like that maybe, but They'll save the rest to stick into future TNG movies so the fans will all gasp and cheer at the surprise cameos. They really need to work on making the cameos worthwhile. Remember in First Contact? "Hi, My name's Reg Barclay! Well, gotta go!" I think that the other sure bet about the finale is that Worf will kill Dukat, so that he can have avenged his wife's death. I just wish they'd kill Kira. I was just never a fan. But if you are that's okay. I'm not going to get on here and tell you that your favorite character sucks and that you suck for having a different opinion than me. I hate that. But I'm used to stuff like that... I like the Spice Girls!

    Founders will go on;Cardassians/Centauri

    by chapaev

I don't believe the Founders could be totally defeated at the end of DS9.That would be loosing a good movie opportunity.Driven out of the Alpha Quadrant more likely. And that virus threat could be years away.
Cardassians are the likely scapegoats-they would probably turn against the Dominion in the finale and would regret that.I fear we could be in for more B5/Trek rip-off accusations with Cardassians/Centauri storylines similarities.I HOPE it doesn't happen...

Dukat will die, that's pretty much been established by the writers and producers. It's just how he's going to die, and who gets to kill him that we don't yet know.

Come on, people! What has the OS Star Trek movies taught you? What has the TNG movies taught you? Hey, hey, hey! To save this thing or that, it will take a noble sacrifice. by mckracken

    YEAH YEAH YEAH!!!!
"BLOW UP DS9"!!! (gee that sounds suspiciously like an AC/DC song!)i usually disagree with DwDunphy but my general lack of intrest in ANY of the DS9 storylines makes me feel this would be a good idea. BLOW IT AWAY and take the damn wormhole with it!! but i have one better, show Voyager **FINALLY** coming home into Alpha quadrant using the wormhole from DS9 as the station blows up (with the crew still on board!) which causes the Wormhole to go KA-BOOM and blowing up Voyager with it!! Set the new series between Star Trek 6: Undiscovered Country and ST:Generations, but wearing the cool RED uniforms!! Create some bad-ass villains like Khan was and make it totally evil cool!!

    Star Trek... sci-fi?

    by dolfanar

Star trek cerased to be sci-fi about 15 years ago, when they stopped telling stories about where *we* are going, and *how* we will live, and started telling us stories which where tied up exclusively with the Star trek mythos... Not that this is necessarily a bad thing, Star Wars takes place in Space, yet ISN't sci-fi (It's a classic Fantasy story)... DS9 is a weekly Soap Opera. Period. Characters hardly change, they have contrived backgrounds, and react to situations in overly dramatic fashion. This is acceptable for some, and unwatchable to others. The quality of the show is fine, the content however is a matter of taste. Voyager on the other hand is a poor show EVEN by the dramatic standards set up by modern Trek...

    DS9 isn't that bad...

    by chapaev

I think DS9 is much more than soap opera - too much attention is given to storylines, dialogues and acting in most episodes. The characters might respond to situations in overly dramatic fashion, but the same thing could be said of any attempt at study of human nature. You could blame Shakespeare for that as well.
My DS9 favourite is an episode called "Duet"-no SFX,no space battles-just a good script and brilliant acting.A concise episode that needs no follow-ups.And you don't need to know ANYTHING about Trek to be moved by the story. Not exactly the stuff of soap operas,is it?
