Sure, it's awesome and I want one for my own personal collection... But why?

First off, I don't like his movies. There's nothing to them. I wouldn't care, but he, and the movies themselves act as though there is something to 'em. My VHS collection of crappy 70's and 80's horror movies is testament to my appreciation of the genre. I think during those times, the last thing any of those movies were was pretentious. Now, however, pretention seems to find its way into every nook there is. At one point, I was hopeless. I thought there would never be a movie that touched upon what horror from the 70's and 80's had to offer. My prayers were answered with Rob Zombie's directing career. In a time where horror has found a split among PG13, and pseudo hardcore R, Rob zombie's work is a big fuck you to the softies, and a harder fuck you to the guys who act like they're making "real" horror. I'm not saying I'm looking for anything with substance. I'm also not saying I'm looking for something with an absolute lack thereof. I have a hard time putting into words how I feel about the shit for horror films they make today. But there is a very clear distinction between what was crappy and enjoyable then, and what is crappy and worthless now. This is coming from a guy who is 22 years old. I'm the generation they're marketing this crap to. I have always dreamed that one day, I would be able to walk into the theater to watch a freddy, jason, or meyers flick as fun as the ones I have watched on video so damn much. But alas, the only oppurtunities I have been afforded were devestatingly disappointing. The only chances I've had were when the genre started to lose it. I am soooo fucking jealous of the folks who got to see Exorcist, Halloween, and the likes when it was fresh on the big screen in packed theaters of freaked out masses. What was the last big, "gotta see it" horror movie that had everybody and their mom seated in the theater? Blair witch project? The blair witch project can suck my tit-hair.

So I should care about this...why? First, it's a poster for a very shitty sequel to a very shitty movie that was made by a shitty director.

Second, if showing a naked woman is the most "original" idea that Roth could come up with, to try and get people to turn their head and look, I have a late breaking news flash for him. Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but bashing Eli Roth and Rob Zombie for their taste in film because of your own aversion to gore and violence is just stupid. Like it or not, both directors have made quality films that many people (but not you obviously) have enjoyed and they will both likely continue to make films well into the future. If you have'nt heard, Eli Roth's next film will be Stephen King's Cell. And for the record, I thought "Hostel" was one of the most thought-provoking horror movies I'd seen in ages, with a real Fulci feel and a savage critique of capitalism... but the idea of watching girls get tortured doesn't appeal to me; I'll wait and read some reviews before I decide if I'll see Hostel II.

I agree with the overall theme of your post, but saying Roth has delivered quality movies is a bit pushing it. Hostel sucked major ass...it was not scary nor gory and the script was non exsistant 45 minutes of amteur softcore porn follwed by 1 hour of amateur softcore torture and less said about his first feature the better.

And I thought all of their sophomore efforts were much better than their first attempts. Personally, I think everyone complaining about them should pick their battles. These guys may not be Carpenter, Craven and Hooper, but they are probably the best up and coming horror directors of their generation, and if you have a bone to pick with today's horror films pick it with whoever directed the Black Christmas remake, or the Hitcher remake, or the slew of direct to video garbage that makes these guys look like auteurs. Sadly, it's going to take an uber-genius to come up with a new idea for a horror movie, so the gore boundaries will continue to be pushed for lack of better trails to blaze.

Hostel is not a great film. It's debateable if it's even a GOOD film. It's not scary at all. It's just so much fucking fun. Through no specific intention of his own, Eli Roth made the first 45 minues or so of the movie dull and bland as shit, with annoying lead actors that you (I) couldn't wait to see sliced to pieces. I was in the theater grumbling about just having plopped down nine dollars and fifty cents on this bullshit. Until the torture started. It was such a release. Almost sexual. YES. I was yelling at the screen and cheering and whooping and hollering. I just really enjoy mean-spirited filth for the sheer sake of mean-spirited filth. It doesn't have to be masterfully directed. It barely even has to be directed. Sometimes just watching people scream for their lives and get eyeballs melted with blowtorches is what I need. I don't think thats 'weird' and 'cool' or anything, it just is what it is. And Hostel 2 will be FEMALE backpackers being dismembered and gutted? Fuck yea. I see what you're saying - I too think that a lot more people enjoy gore than are ready to admit to themselves. On the other hand, I do see what you're getting at: there's a catharsis involved in watching torture porn, and hopefully some people may be sated by watching the movie without having to enact it out in reality. This is all a tricky place to get into, because from whatever angle you look at it, all those of us who watch these sick flicks must have a little bick of fucked-up sickness in us that wants to watch. I enjoy these movies because I want to see the guys/girls who are in the situation being hunted / tortured / killed getting revenge on their captors. As far as I'm concerned, Rob Zombie has so far only demonstrated his love and appreciation for other, older, better movies. That's fine, but with HOSTEL, Roth actually used certain elements of older horror to make something new and sophisticated that drew strengths from its predecessors, but could only have been made in the modern day.

Maybe he'll prove me wrong, but so far Rob Zombie is only a kitsch musician who's decided to make movies. Roth is a filmmaker. Maybe I missed something, but H1KC was just nonsense, and DEVIL'S REJECTS was a mess, empty of significance or any depth. It was all surface and attitude and style, whereas HOSTEL had real substance, a complex, shifting mood, and profound existential irony, as well as as that treasured, elusive element-- "vibe"-- none of which Zombie has yet shown himself to be capable of.

But I welcome disagreement... I'm willing to be wrong about Zombie. I wish there were more horror directors I thought were worthwhile!
