Fire & Rainn!! Learn What’s In The Works As OFFICE Mate Wilson Hosts The Last SNL of Sweeps!!

Published at:  Feb 24, 2007 11:49:43 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Rainn Wilson, who played Creepy Arthur on “Six Feet Under” and the Harry Knowles character on “Entourage” - and now plays the oddly behaved Dwight Schrute on “The Office” - hosts tonight’s "Saturday Night Live."

Making tonight’s dress rehearsal? The first installment of "The Falconer" since May 2006!!!

We can also expect perhaps a cameo from one of Wilson’s “Office” mates. (The smart money, of course, is on Steve Carell, a associate of “SNL” since 1996 when he first played the Gary half of the Ambiguously Gay Duo.)

And of course, as the promos suggest, Nooni & Noni Schroner are likely to turn up.

Look! Press release!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“OFFICE” STAR RAINN WILSON HOSTS “SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE” WITH MUSICAL GUEST THE ARCADE FIRE ON FEBRUARY 24

NEW YORK – February 20, 2007 – NBC's "Saturday Night Live"
welcomes one of the stars of the network's critically acclaimed and Emmy Award winning comedy "The Office," Rainn Wilson, with one of the most talked about bands of 2007 – The Arcade Fire – on February 24.

Wilson, who is known to millions as "Dwight Schrute" on NBC's Emmy-, SAG-, and Golden Globe-winning "The Office" alongside Steve Carell. Previously, Wilson was known for his work as Arthur Martin, the mortician's apprentice on HBO's Emmy Award-winning series "Six Feet Under."

Wilson transitions to a leading role in the Sundance Festival hit "The Last Mimzy" opposite Joely Richardson as a science teacher who gets caught up in a fantastical science-fiction ride when two of his students uncover a box of ultra-advanced toys with magical capabilities to bring
them into the future.

Previous credits include: "My Super Ex-Girlfriend" opposite Luke Wilson and Uma Thurman; "Sahara" with Matthew McConaughey, Steve Zahn, and Penelope Cruz; "Badasssss"; Steven Soderbergh's "Full Frontal"; Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous"; "America's Sweethearts"; "House of 1,000 Corpses" and "Galaxy Quest." He has also guest-starred on "CSI," "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Dark Angel," and "Monk," and he co-starred in the TV movie "When Billy Beat Bobby."

Joining Wilson in their "SNL" debut is one of the most talked about bands of the last several years, Montreal's The Arcade Fire, who will perform selections from their eagerly anticipated sophomore release "Neon Bible."

The Arcade Fire topped countless best-of lists in 2004 upon the release of their universally acclaimed independently released debut "Funeral." The album garnered Grammy nominations and praise from across the critical spectrum – whether it was awarded a 9.7 review from Pitchfork Media or heralded as a band that "stormed into American onsciousness" by The New York Times. The follow-up, the forthcoming "Neon Bible," will arrive hotly anticipated on March 6 on the heels of the band's recent five-night sold out concert runs in New York City, London and Montreal.

"Saturday Night Live," is from SNL Studios in association with Broadway Video. The creator and executive producer is Lorne Michaels. Steve Higgins produces. Marci Klein and Mike Shoemaker are producers. Head writers are Seth Meyers, Paula Pell and Andrew Steele. Don Roy King
directs.

    by jccalhoun

One of the things that I've found frustrating about SNL is that they never take advantage of the fact that the show is live to do something really daring or unexpected. I've been thinking and I can't really remember any time when they took advantage of the fact that they are live (except for Jimmy Fallon always laughing at himself...).

I loved that sketch on the Annette Benning show and I thought that version was actually a funnier sketch than last night's but I'm glad they are bringing it back. But IMO the best sketches were the bar song and the digital short and the "white possum" thing. Did anyone else notice that Wilson was in every sketch? He was not in Weekend Update - OK - but everything else. A big change from Forest Whitaker two weeks ago.

It looked to me that most of the strings were

    by big jim

broken by the end of the song. Made me wonder if the performance was live or if it was Memorex.

He busted a string about 3/4s of the way through...

    by mr. nice gaius

...then proceeded to break a few more (by pulling on them) at the end of the song. He then smashed the guitar out of what looked like embarrassed frustration.

    I loved this episode...

    by danielkurland

The only week spot for me was the Black Snake Moan sketch. This was a terrific episode, and my only complaint is that Hader was underused.

    his pee...

    ...came out of my nose!

And did anyone notice that Keenan was smirking a lot less tonight? He actually came off as somewhat commited to being intense in the "Black Snake Moan" parody.

And the digital short was the shit. Because the Indian's name wasn't Chief Big Cloud, it was Gary! Get it?

    Plenty of good stuff

    by freakemovie

Cold open was a bit too long -- I think the Larry King part was just so Rainn would have enough time to change for the monologue. But the monologue was great, the three office nerds who get drunk was great and should've gotten a better response, the digital short was great, the peeper was hilarious, and overall Rainn Wilson was great...definitely one of the better hosts.

Haven't laughed at SNL for years...

    by ejcarter9

... but caught this episode and laughed several times, so SNL must be improving. I might catch a few more this season. And Arcade Fire was a total mess. I can't remember ever looking forward to a song on SNL, though. Give me comedy and keep your fucking songs on MTV.

    This is better...

    by 88mph

I saw Rainn in this ridiculous online video blog about these guys making a velociraptor movie...
    www.myspace.com/raptorquest.

Funny shit. He's in the 6th one, talking about ninjas. The rest of them are pretty funny too.

As for the show, Arcade Fire rocked. Besides that, the only thing I laughed at was how dead-on the Pam and Jim impressions were in the opening sketch. I kind of love "The (American)Office," but the mugging to the camera does get pretty ridiculous. Who does that?

    "A nice try"

    by inwosuxred

It certainly wasn't a solid show, but I was just suprised there were actual laughs at all. The song sketch was really good. So good it seemed like it came from another show. The video sketch was also fairly entertaining. After that things took a big slide. You'll note those good sketches contained no reoccuring characters and also contained no impressions. The nooni sketch was painful, and the weekend update thing was unexcusibly horrible. Can't they just buy a Colbert re-run and plug it into that timeslot? Weekend update felt like a collection of occasionally "dirty" or "topical" Bazooka Joe jokes told from a news desk, combined with some liberal gloating (and I'm about as left as you get) and some boring impressions. Poohler's mugging is even more obnoxious than the worst of Jon Stewart. I feel like I've seen the "somebody holds up their hand to cover their face and vomits uncontrolably" bit a hundred times, just on SNL. Arcade Fire was pretty good, but they probably should have gotten them for the last album. At least SNL seems to be going after bands that probably won't get caught lip synching. I got the feeling the guy broke the guitar out of frustration that all his strings were breaking. It didn't seem planned, and looked quite lame.
