MSJ On GHOST RIDER 2 And PREACHER!!

Published at:  Feb 23, 2007 4:51:07 AM CST

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

I didn’t see GHOST RIDER early enough to write any sort of timely review, but I finally caught up with it at an early morning showing at the Plant, a sort of generic dive which is about four minutes from my house. The theater was about half-full, most of the audience made up of eight-to-ten year old boys and their parents. The only other guy I saw who was anywhere near my age who wasn’t there with their kid was a retarded guy in his 40s. He sat directly in front of me, about three rows up.

I’m happy to report that he couldn’t get enough of the movie. Literally. He clapped through about 75% of the movie. If Nic Cage or Ghost Rider was onscreen, this cat was having a party.

I’m not sure I liked it anywhere near that much, but I also didn’t hate it with the same vigor that Harry did. Not by any means. I think it’s a mixed bag. I think Ghost Rider himself is pretty spiffy, and I think Nic Cage looks like he was having fun, something we don’t see enough of from him. I don’t think the film is ever really compelling in the sense of you wanting to see how it will turn out. It’s sort of perfunctory, and some of the fight scenes (that underwater one in particular) don’t make any sense. Even so, I enjoyed little visual flourishes all the way through, and Sam Elliott was about as good as you’d hope playing The Exposition Kid. I think it’s far less successful as a script than DAREDEVIL was, but it’s got just enough cool stuff in it that I refuse to write it off as a total loss.

Here’s a wee bit of news from the folks at IFMagazine:

Here’s the link.

Man! Ghost rider beat them kind of easy! My thoughts exactly. There was no, "How is he going to get out of this one". We had 1 minute fight scenes were Ghost Rider simply "knew" how to beat them. Lame. This movie was made for 10 year old boys. (And that's is not praise). I said it before, after the Dare Devil playground fight, no company should have given this guy another comic book movie. He just doesn't have greatness in him.

Have another of his shitty Marvel adaptations released during the time of year where there's no competition; it looks successful for "winning the weekend"; he gets to do more shitty comic book adaptations because all the execs see is a few dollar signs. Now about Preacher...OK fan boys your getting your wish. Not only is this one getting made, but as a SERIES on HBO! I don't read preacher, but from what I know of it HBO seems like the perfect place for this series to live. So I have my fingers crossed for you Preacher fans that this doesn't rape your childhood, is equal to nipples on Batman, or what ever other running joke applies for you...cause Preacher fans gotta EAT!!!

    by big_bubbaloola

Well I can't wait to see if that'll happen. I know that HBO is a open & broadminded channel, but there gonna have to gear up for some serious abuse by the God Squad if they screen a faithful adaptation. For those not familiar with Preacher, it's not exactly, well, God friendly so to speak.

    by brokentusk

DAREDEVIL had its problems, but they were NOT Johnson's fault. The blame lies with Fox, just like Ratner and X3. As for GHOST RIDER, you must all realise that no matter who made the film... we were NEVER going to get the Ghost Rider film we wanted - just like DAREDEVIL, the studio had other ideas. I know Johnson is incredibly passionate about comics from hearing him talk, so... with a production house like HBO behind him, letting him write WHATEVER HE WANTS TO, I know he'll knock PREACHER out of the park. Plus, you have to bear in mind that he won't be writing and directing every episode of the series.

So HBO will sign on and buy it and then give it to the people who did Carnivale and Rome. A Preacher that's a faithful adaptation of the comic with the depth and production values of either of those two series would be great. Maybe HBO is smart enough to let someone else handle it.

    by msjeatsass

There is no way HBO will allow it to be anywhere close to the original material. Now, people were up in arms over Ratner and X-men 3 and our fears were were right about it being servicable but cold and bland. You can't blame everyone else for the common factor in Daredevil and Ghost Rider, it's MSJ at the center. He's the worse panderer. He talks the fan-boy talk and as someone else mentioned like Ed Wood has a passion for wanting to make movies. Yet it comes across more as a passion for butter. Some can defend him by saying a stuck clock is right twice a day, like Pete Jackson and LOTR, but I doubt he has ability to man-up and make something happen. Maybe TV is the right place for him, since cinematic action scenes are beyond his scope. As long as Preacher is full of talking two and three shots I think it'll be fine like an episode of Brothers and Sisters.

AICN - the place where opinions come to die.

    by brokentusk

"There is no way HBO will allow it to be anywhere close to the original material." I can't really agree with that at all. HBO doesn't shy away from sensitive material (in fact they seem to search for it), and they certainly don't spare any expense when it comes to their shows (see CARNIVALE or ROME for proof of this). In fact, I've heard that they specifically WANTED the series to remain extremely faithful to the graphic novels. A lot of people hated DAREDEVIL, but I’m in the small minority that loved it - the script was actually solid and the elements that didn't work were due more to the small budget than to poor direction. Yes, the director approves everything - so technically all the blame falls on his shoulders, but Johnson didn't have a huge budget to play around with - he couldn't hire Hans Zimmer to score the film, he couldn't afford ILM to do the visual effects. I actually think the sound design of the film was phenomenal. All I'm saying is - the guy has pissed off fans twice over now, but I'm still willing to give him a chance with PREACHER because this time he has a giant sandbox to play in. If he fails, I'll join in with everyone else in the hatred, but if he succeeds... that would be great.

...and you will have fun, and be genuinely pleased with the very few moments that are excellent ("Sterilize this.") Expect anything more, be disappointed.Sam Elliot brought his gravitas with him, and had a good "This movie may suck, but I don't" vibe. Nick Cage did his best to make this fun, and succeeded a few times. Peter Fonda and the Blackheart were absolutely laughable--"under the top villains" with no presence at all, and no menace about them. Eva Mendez seemed to mostly be posing, flipping her hair. She was better in other films, but so was everyone else here. The Second Chances theme of the film was probably the most genuinely felt aspect, expressed sincerely by the actors, who are no doubt praying that they will have another chance to make any other movie. It did not help this film to have trailers for Spiderman 3 and 300 immediately preceed it. Those raised the bar high, but this movie was all about Doing the Limbo: let's but Cage and Elliot in a movie, and then See HOW LOW CAN YOU GO....

    The "Snor-igin" of Ghost Rider

    by otto parts

Seriously, aren't we all sick to death of these drawn-out origin stories in our comic book flicks? If I see one more superhero movie where the main character doesn't reveal themselves until after the first hour, I'm gonna boycott this genre all together. MSJ is the hackiest hack that ever hacked.

Preacher, an incredible work of art, belongs in the hands of Walter Hill. I guarantee he'd do it for a fraction of the cost of MSJ, and he's got the experience and visual panche to knock this sumbitch out of the park.

I swear I'll never forgive MSJ for the colossal soft taco crap he took on Daredevil. Time for someone to "Incredible Hulk"-reboot that concept, ASAP.

I don't see how Preacher can be screwed up...

    by scarranhalfbreed

...The comics are already scripted to perfection - there's nothing you need to change, although no doubt there will be changes as there always is, but hopefully for the better. This guy has to be REALLY gifted to screw up Preacher.

#1 Last weekend, #1 This weekend...

...and #1 around the world. Again. Say what you want about MSJ, but his movies are fucking hits. He took a totally unknown character and turned it into a record breaking movie. Hellboy didn't do that. Neither did Constantine. Or Punisher. Or League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Or V for Vendetta. Or...

1 reason your defending doesn't matter

    by bender7

If Johnson doesn't care if people bitch about it, he doesn't care if you try and defend people bitching about it. Instead of trying to discount other opinons of the movie why not just express your own? Personally I don't think a box office success makes a good movie though

I liked it. Saw it last night.

    by juggernaut125

This was a case of not having any prehistory with the character. I knew almost nothing about GR going in, and just wanted something to watch. I liked the effects. I enjoyed the humour. And Sam Elliot is one of those guys who could sit at a bar telling jokes through an entire picture and it would be worth the price of admission.
