MSJ On GHOST RIDER 2 And PREACHER!!
Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.
I didn’t see GHOST RIDER early enough to write any sort of timely review, but I finally caught up with it at an early morning showing at the Plant, a sort of generic dive which is about four minutes from my house. The theater was about half-full, most of the audience made up of eight-to-ten year old boys and their parents. The only other guy I saw who was anywhere near my age who wasn’t there with their kid was a retarded guy in his 40s. He sat directly in front of me, about three rows up.
I’m happy to report that he couldn’t get enough of the movie. Literally. He clapped through about 75% of the movie. If Nic Cage or Ghost Rider was onscreen, this cat was having a party.
I’m not sure I liked it anywhere near that much, but I also didn’t hate it with the same vigor that Harry did. Not by any means. I think it’s a mixed bag. I think Ghost Rider himself is pretty spiffy, and I think Nic Cage looks like he was having fun, something we don’t see enough of from him. I don’t think the film is ever really compelling in the sense of you wanting to see how it will turn out. It’s sort of perfunctory, and some of the fight scenes (that underwater one in particular) don’t make any sense. Even so, I enjoyed little visual flourishes all the way through, and Sam Elliott was about as good as you’d hope playing The Exposition Kid. I think it’s far less successful as a script than DAREDEVIL was, but it’s got just enough cool stuff in it that I refuse to write it off as a total loss.
Here’s a wee bit of news from the folks at IFMagazine:
Here’s the link.

Ok, Daredevil was bad. Ghost Rider, at least he fucked up a character I could really give a crap about. Preacher...well don't hold your breath, MSJ will douche this too. Taking over/under on whether it will be a bad as Daredevil.
-
"Retarted guy"?
-
just, you know, a 40 year old guy paying to see this pile of shit...
-
Man! Ghost rider beat them kind of easy! My thoughts exactly. There was no, "How is he going to get out of this one". We had 1 minute fight scenes were Ghost Rider simply "knew" how to beat them. Lame. This movie was made for 10 year old boys. (And that's is not praise). I said it before, after the Dare Devil playground fight, no company should have given this guy another comic book movie. He just doesn't have greatness in him.
-
with childrens brains, or for children with, well childrens brains.
-
Have another of his shitty Marvel adaptations released during the time of year where there's no competition; it looks successful for "winning the weekend"; he gets to do more shitty comic book adaptations because all the execs see is a few dollar signs. Seriously, MSJ is a much better villain than he could ever write in one of his retarded screenplays.
-
brain-capacity impaired. I'm with you though; I enjoyed GR and thought it worked over all even with it's flaws. Now that the origin is out of the way let the real demonic ass kicking begin! Now about Preacher...OK fan boys your getting your wish. Not only is this one getting made, but as a SERIES on HBO! I don't read preacher, but from what I know of it HBO seems like the perfect place for this series to live. So I have my fingers crossed for you Preacher fans that this doesn't rape your childhood, is equal to nipples on Batman, or what ever other running joke applies for you...cause Preacher fans gotta EAT!!!

If Preacher really is almost exact to the comic...
by theageofknights.com
Then how much can he fuck it up? He may be a hack, but directing is overrated. Writing is where it's at. If he uses the comic as a storyboard and script, it'll be fantastic!
-
he's not too happy about being called retarded.
"but directing is overrated" - Admittedly Preacher doesn't need anything fancy but the problem I have with this guy is that he can turn a decent script into something that looks and feels bland and uninteresting.
Maybe that's just me. -
Well I can't wait to see if that'll happen. I know that HBO is a open & broadminded channel, but there gonna have to gear up for some serious abuse by the God Squad if they screen a faithful adaptation. For those not familiar with Preacher, it's not exactly, well, God friendly so to speak.
-
Apparantly Sam the Man expressed interest at one point!?!?!?!
Not sure that's the best choice in the world, personally i'd like to see Scott Glen have a crack at it. Any thoughts guys?? -
oh wait, that's the same thing.
-
Retarded Ghost Rider Fans Gotta Eat!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
I'm glad Yogsoggoth had a good time.
-
thats gotta be the only explanation. everybody else tried but the dialouge was crabby (okay some of the acting too).
-
The only difference, as Fizzlebeef pointed out, is that his movies look more successful since they're released in the winter. Someone should get a restraining order keeping him away from any more Marvel projects (Heck, it should have been done based on the casting for Daredevil alone - Bennifer II was a terrible idea).
-
Mark Steven Johnson is the new Paul W.S.Anderson.It takes a certain level of non-talent to take action that,by all means,SHOULD be exciting and make you wish you were home watching your toe nails grow.I fear for Preacher.
-
Problem I have with Ghost Rider is the bad guy. I thought Black Heart was generic as hell and something we'd seen a thousand times before on any made for DVD movie. I haven't read any of the Ghost Rider comics but hopefully theres much better villains for future Ghost Rider movies.
-
And I really don't appreciate being called "retarded". We prefer mental deficient individuals, thank you.
-
always fun to make light of retarded people eh moriarty?
-
...if you all weren't so much fun to make fun of, then we wouldn't have to do it.
-
Is he really still onboard for Preacher...Fuck...Fuck
-
Zing!
-
... and he is well and truly OUT. Two dogshit movies from 2 different comic book characters is more than most guys get a crack at. If he fucks up Preacher in similar style... GEEK VENGEANCE WILL BE SWIFT AND MERCILESS.
-
Sure... DD letting a guy die didn't have anything to do with him being on the verge of a nervous breakdown. It certainly didn't set-up his eventual redemption when he didn't kill Fisk.
Granted, the whole "DD at his lowest possible point" was a mess in the theatrical version. -
Preacher would work better as an HBO or showtime mini-series by some unknown director than by this dufus.
-
We're talking about a comic where a religious nut bag humps a giant woman made of meat. If this man who completely misunderstood the dark characters of Daredevil and Ghost Rider (two of Marvels darkest) thinks he has a shot in hell in grasping the complexities and tone of Preacher he's way wrong.

"a true noble hero would do the same thing as daredevil
by purityofessence
I don't see anything particularly Nobel or Heroic about said actions. Punisher isn't what I would call a true and noble hero.
-
just saying, maybe it's not cool to make fun of people that can't really defend themselves...maybe there should be a sacred cow (like your mom, only less sacred)...there i did it, i resorted to a mom joke
-
I don't know what that really means, it just sounded funny.
-
I CAN SEE YOU ARE PASSIONATE AND LOVE THE CHARACTERS THAT YOU PICK TO, TO TURN THEM INTO FILMS, BUT SERIOUSLY, YOU ARE JUST LIKE ED WOOD, GUY HAD A PASSION FOR MOVIES BUT NO TALENT WHATSOEVER, SO YES, PEOPLE WILL TURN ON YOU FOR MAKING CHANGES TO CHARACTERS YOU CLAIM TO LOVE JUST SO THE STUDIO CAN SELL HAPPY MEALS AND TOYS.. AND NOT ONLY THAT, BUT MAN, YOU REALLY DONT KNOW HOW TO SHOOT AN ACTION SEQUENCE, THEREFORE MAKING THE SUPERHERO LOOK LESS EXCITING AND LAME... PLEASE, PLEASE DO SOMETHING ELSE, I HEAR MUSIC VIDEO DIRECTORS DO GOOD MONEY, WHY DONT YOU TRY YOUR HANDS AT THAT? OH, AND YOUR LICENSE TO SHOW UP AT ANY COMIC BOOK CONVENTION HAS BEEN REVOKED, AND IF YOU KNOW WHATS GOOD FOR YOU, THEN YOU SHOULD STAY AWAY FROM THEM.. AND NO, IM NOT TALKING ABOUT DOING SOMETHING VIOLENT TO THE GUY, BUT IF I SEE HIM ON A PANEL, I WILL MAKE HIM CRY!!!!!
-
The directors cut of Daredevil is a very good movie and any cut of Ghost Riders has to suck nads! I think he deserves another chance.
http://tinyurl.com/pv8do -
I don't even like Preacher, but MSJ does not seem a good fit for the material.
-
DD a serious film. It was ridiculous abuse of that character and its themes - it was a teenage angst film. Now Ghost Rider, he made a campfest and it was enjoyable. There is no way this guy can adapt Preacher.
-
DAREDEVIL had its problems, but they were NOT Johnson's fault. The blame lies with Fox, just like Ratner and X3. As for GHOST RIDER, you must all realise that no matter who made the film... we were NEVER going to get the Ghost Rider film we wanted - just like DAREDEVIL, the studio had other ideas. I know Johnson is incredibly passionate about comics from hearing him talk, so... with a production house like HBO behind him, letting him write WHATEVER HE WANTS TO, I know he'll knock PREACHER out of the park. Plus, you have to bear in mind that he won't be writing and directing every episode of the series.
-
I hope it lives and dies as a poorly made pilot that never sees the light of day. Unless MSJ plays arse face, I don't want him anywhere near the series.
-
So HBO will sign on and buy it and then give it to the people who did Carnivale and Rome. A Preacher that's a faithful adaptation of the comic with the depth and production values of either of those two series would be great. Maybe HBO is smart enough to let someone else handle it.
-
There is no way HBO will allow it to be anywhere close to the original material. Now, people were up in arms over Ratner and X-men 3 and our fears were were right about it being servicable but cold and bland. You can't blame everyone else for the common factor in Daredevil and Ghost Rider, it's MSJ at the center. He's the worse panderer. He talks the fan-boy talk and as someone else mentioned like Ed Wood has a passion for wanting to make movies. Yet it comes across more as a passion for butter. Some can defend him by saying a stuck clock is right twice a day, like Pete Jackson and LOTR, but I doubt he has ability to man-up and make something happen. Maybe TV is the right place for him, since cinematic action scenes are beyond his scope. As long as Preacher is full of talking two and three shots I think it'll be fine like an episode of Brothers and Sisters.
-
little nicky coppola is getting more a faggety fag, movie by movie. totally differant thing: the swedish (real life) ghost rider is much more fun and tougher, too.
not a single chopper poppers dude would dare to ride that fast in a traffic (jam)... -
but not for Preacher. And MSJ is terrible for it. I could only hope they would put it in someone elses hands after the pilot. It could only work as a series, but I would just rather it not be fucked with. Especially by the guy who made DD and GR, they both SUCKED. Who's this guy going to get for the Allfather? MICHAEL CLARKE DUNCAN?
-
I don't like being a PC asswipe but it just ain't right.
-
and to mr. nick in a cage: pretty cocksucking latinas won't save your shit.
-
It doesn't need to be handled by this hack. And for you MSJ defenders, please look beyond his fanboy spin contol.
The emperor has no friggin clothes! -
That's right - it was that action-packed yet serious study of the hero called..."Simon Burch". God, I would take my own life if I'd written that piece of shit (or any of the pieces of shit he's written since).
-
The entire script, almost the entire cast (Foggy and Elektra-maybe excepted), the cinematography, the design, the soundtrack. I believe the director has final say on most of that stuff.
-
He would only kill someone if he had completely lost his way, and that is neither the theme of the first film, nor should it be the focus of the first film. In short, it is retarded.
-
"There is no way HBO will allow it to be anywhere close to the original material." I can't really agree with that at all. HBO doesn't shy away from sensitive material (in fact they seem to search for it), and they certainly don't spare any expense when it comes to their shows (see CARNIVALE or ROME for proof of this). In fact, I've heard that they specifically WANTED the series to remain extremely faithful to the graphic novels. A lot of people hated DAREDEVIL, but I’m in the small minority that loved it - the script was actually solid and the elements that didn't work were due more to the small budget than to poor direction. Yes, the director approves everything - so technically all the blame falls on his shoulders, but Johnson didn't have a huge budget to play around with - he couldn't hire Hans Zimmer to score the film, he couldn't afford ILM to do the visual effects. I actually think the sound design of the film was phenomenal. All I'm saying is - the guy has pissed off fans twice over now, but I'm still willing to give him a chance with PREACHER because this time he has a giant sandbox to play in. If he fails, I'll join in with everyone else in the hatred, but if he succeeds... that would be great.
-
Was the guy retarded before the movie started?
-
Cripes. Doesn't the DD theatrical vs. director cut OBVIATE anything at all to the lot of you where MSJ's skills are concerned?Lookit. Bottom line, DD theatrical cut BAAD! DD director cut GOOOD! This is sentiment the world over. Any questions? If you saw theatrical GR and wondered... Hrm... Perhaps not exactly what you wanted? Then perhaps the director cut will be! Can't help but suspect this myself after DD director cut!My hopes are that HBO let's this guy have full control. History begs it.
-
...when talking about those with learning difficulties went out with the phrases "Chinky" and "Nig-nog".
-
Don't think so. While an improvement, it still had most of the same problems as the theatrical cut and never quite made it to average. I'm sick of average.
-
I enjoyed Ghost Rider I loathed DD and still do.Problems..
1]Ben Afleck as DD.
2]Black King Pin...he's not a pimp.
3]Bullseye..who could of been cool.Instead he was a BAFOON.
4]Lame music and not a full score.
5]Elektra should of been in red with black hair even if it was JG.
MSJ shouldnt be able to have anything to do with Preacher. -
...sod off. First he fucked up DAREDEVIL, then GHOST RIDER. Now he can go fuck himself.
-
the retard comment is really offensive to those of us who have to live and take care of family members who have a form of retardation, like my mother does with her twin brother who has Down Syndrome. And don't try to explain it away - you were taking a cheap shot at a person with a mental handicap, and there's no excuse for that. Fuck off.
-
Seriously, what's the big fucking deal? It's a guy who's skull goes on fire, what did you expect? It's a fucking laugh and I think that they did it tongue in cheek was brilliant.
-
That's what Ghost Rider made opening weekend. Broke the record for the holiday weekend. And it's the biggest movie in the world. You think Johnson gives a big fat shit what you think? If he was making a movie for the few hundred people hanging out here on the boards that would be different, but he went on and made a huge fucking movie and set up a new franchise out of a character that the public has never heard of before. You have to give him props for that.

Deet Dee Dee! -
"So...the same guy who turned the operatic saga of Daredevil into a film which when viewed on mute looks like a male prostitute turf war was already given one second chance with comic book film adaptation, he then took the modern day Faust which had all the elements to match T2 in hardcore action and turned it into a pointless children's film (The fact that parents feel fine taking their little children to see this movie speaks volumes about the sheer lack of understanding Mark Steven Johnson has for the subject matter) and now after making a film about the devils bounty hunter which pulled it's punches in every conceivable way he'll be working on Preacher...good plan."
-
...and you will have fun, and be genuinely pleased with the very few moments that are excellent ("Sterilize this.") Expect anything more, be disappointed.Sam Elliot brought his gravitas with him, and had a good "This movie may suck, but I don't" vibe. Nick Cage did his best to make this fun, and succeeded a few times. Peter Fonda and the Blackheart were absolutely laughable--"under the top villains" with no presence at all, and no menace about them. Eva Mendez seemed to mostly be posing, flipping her hair. She was better in other films, but so was everyone else here. The Second Chances theme of the film was probably the most genuinely felt aspect, expressed sincerely by the actors, who are no doubt praying that they will have another chance to make any other movie. It did not help this film to have trailers for Spiderman 3 and 300 immediately preceed it. Those raised the bar high, but this movie was all about Doing the Limbo: let's but Cage and Elliot in a movie, and then See HOW LOW CAN YOU GO....
-
Maybe it was because the critics set me up to hate it, but I actually had a good time and saw it twice now.
-
So I'm supposed to a give a shit that he made money. By that same logic I should go gaga over pieces of shit like Epic Movie and Failure to Launch. Oh wait those are comedies and I'm supposed to apeshit whenever a comic book movie is made. Sorry bud, but this is gotta be the umpteenth comic property being made. They aint exactly rare enough to give a pass. Also, why should I respect directors setting up shitty franchises? It just influences more garbage to be made. PS Mark Steven Johnson SHOULD care about what goes on in these talkbacks because he CLAIMS to care about what the fans think. That's his whole "shtick" isn't it?
-
Seriously, aren't we all sick to death of these drawn-out origin stories in our comic book flicks? If I see one more superhero movie where the main character doesn't reveal themselves until after the first hour, I'm gonna boycott this genre all together. MSJ is the hackiest hack that ever hacked.
Preacher, an incredible work of art, belongs in the hands of Walter Hill. I guarantee he'd do it for a fraction of the cost of MSJ, and he's got the experience and visual panche to knock this sumbitch out of the park.
I swear I'll never forgive MSJ for the colossal soft taco crap he took on Daredevil. Time for someone to "Incredible Hulk"-reboot that concept, ASAP. -
...The comics are already scripted to perfection - there's nothing you need to change, although no doubt there will be changes as there always is, but hopefully for the better. This guy has to be REALLY gifted to screw up Preacher.
-
...and #1 around the world. Again. Say what you want about MSJ, but his movies are fucking hits. He took a totally unknown character and turned it into a record breaking movie. Hellboy didn't do that. Neither did Constantine. Or Punisher. Or League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Or V for Vendetta. Or...
-
If Johnson doesn't care if people bitch about it, he doesn't care if you try and defend people bitching about it. Instead of trying to discount other opinons of the movie why not just express your own? Personally I don't think a box office success makes a good movie though
-
...that was fuckin hilarious. actually, this whole topic and talkback has been a hoot, starting with the "i-hate-myself-for-laughing" statement about the retarded cat enjoying ghost rider. thanks guys. thanks.
-
"Shut the fuck up and get me a latte. I'm rewriting the Saint of Killers as a black woman in leather pants."
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! omg for some reason that made me laugh like a motherfucker. kudos -
This was a case of not having any prehistory with the character. I knew almost nothing about GR going in, and just wanted something to watch. I liked the effects. I enjoyed the humour. And Sam Elliot is one of those guys who could sit at a bar telling jokes through an entire picture and it would be worth the price of admission.
-
"...who turned the operatic saga of Daredevil into a film which when viewed on mute looks like a male prostitute turf war..." HAHAHAHAHH!!!!
