Cool News
Goodbye, Cohens, Coopers, Atwoods, Bait Shop, Ironist, Kid Chino & Little Miss Vixen!! The Last OC Ever!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
I am – Hercules!!
And I am not a big fan of the soaps! Never could be bothered with “Dallas” or “Dynasty.” Bored to tears by “Desperate Housewives.” Ditto “90210.” “Melrose Place” corralled into its cast some of the most beautiful women ever birthed, but the words – the words coming out of the hot girls’ mouths were so stale and clichéd and idiotic I could not stand to watch more than five minutes at a time.

But “The OC,”
which airs its final episode tonight? I loved. Loved from day one, when Luke slugged Ryan Atwood and called him “bitch.” Never stopped loving it through four relentlessly disparaged seasons. For me, there was never an episode devoid of entertainment value. And some episodes sent me into bawling fits, so strongly did I come to identify with these characters and their romantic travails. Series mastermind Josh Schwartz is one talented dude. He has two pilots in the hopper for next autumn and I hope they both get picked up.

Chief among “The OC's”
thespianic virtues we hail Adam Brody as indie-loving comic-book ubernerd Seth Cohen. Seth was always way more “Freaks & Geeks” than “One Tree Hill,” and Brody can get laughs out of the phone book. And I came to love the haughty object of his affection, Summer Roberts (Rachel Bilson), just as aggressively.

And yes, I came to love the grown-ups: Seth’s parents, the big-hearted Sandy and Kirsten Cohen, and scheming neighbors Jimmy and Julie Cooper. And I came to love a litany of characters who paraded in and out of the Cohens’ lives. Summer and Fightin’ Ryan first and foremost, but also Anna Stern, Luke Ward, Theresa Diaz, Hayley Nichol, lesbianic Alex Kelly, Lindsay Gardner, Taylor Townsend, Kaitlin Cooper, Winchester of Brown, Princess Sparkle and Captain Oats.
I even liked Kevin Volchok, Caleb Nichol and Oliver Trask. Mostly because his name is almost Boliver Trask. You heard me!
The club where all the underage kids hung out was called The Bait Shop!!
This show also gave us Chrismukkah, which kicks Festivus hinder.
Tonight’s finale is said to be set six months in the future. I love that. I think all series finales should jump ahead in time. Let us know how everything turned out, “American Graffiti”-style.
I think my two favorite characters, Seth and Summer, are marrying.
I’m wrong a lot.

Tape “Grey’s Anatomy.” TiVo “CSI.” Watch “The OC.”
9 p.m. Thursday. Fox.

punch grey's in the face, and watch oc
-
ah, lesbianic alex: just one of the many excellent reasons to watch the OC. it sucks ass that the show is ending, but at least it's going out while it's still one of the funniest and cleverest shows on tv. sadly, this talkback will now fill up with OC haters claiming they don't know how anyone could watch this show. they are all invited to suck my big fat one.
-
Fuckin' show.
-
This show has finally hit it's stride. Oddly enough, this means that the OC goes out on top. It goes out with a lot more potential left in the tank, and with the show firing on all cylinders. Yes people; this show is the TV equivalent of...BARRY SANDERS.
Nevertheless, a mighty HUZZAH to the OC, and may everyone live happily ever after. These characters deserve as much.
-
the rest were just...meh
-
Amen.
-
The only soap I've ever watched on a regular basis. If only season 2 and 3 were a little stronger. I think the slide began with the decision to make the main characters high schoolers for ANOTHER year. Come on, what are they, 30 by now? Gonna miss Sandy, Kirsten, and Julie Cooper-Nichol-Cooper-Roberts-Atwood-Bullit? I think Julie gets married tonight, not Seth and Summer!
-
Along with the killer timeslot accelerated the show's demise, IMO. If the former doesn't happen, then at least they would have had a chance to get in a full 4th season.
-
the end
-
From what I've gathered from my die-hard fanatic friends, the plot is totally secondary to the utter importance of "Which song will they play to end the show on?"
Good riddance. -
...I'm all yours you nerd from another world you!!!!
-
...that's cause she was the worst part of the show. Season 1 was wonderful, season 2 was great, season 3 was meh, but season 4 has been just as good as season 1 and I'm going to miss it. If it had ended after season 3 I wouldn't have.
And Mischa has given me yet one more reason to dislike her...
"When asked if she was surprised that the show had been axed she told Fox News, "No. They killed me off." When asked if she had been one of the main reasons that fans tuned into the show, she added, "That's what I think they discovered." "
Season 4 was so much better without her and her stupid drama (it's a soap so there is suppose to be drama, but she was just boring to watch...even as a lesbian she was lame.). The addition of Taylor Townsend also went a long way to making season 4 great.
OC you will be missed. Mischa I’m glad they killed your character.
-
Excuse me, I'm still laughing uncontrollably over the cage fighting. Will try to contribute more to this talk back later . . .
-
What about that ridiculous one-dimensional Dean character from season 3, and the episode where Ryan, of course, punches him out. That's the episode where I knew it had gone too far.
-
I really wished another crappy network would pick it up.
-
I started watching this show on and on for years but this season was the best for me due to Seth and Ryan and Summer and Taylor. It's a shame they're going off the air, but I hope they hook up on one of Schartz's pilots. I think Veronica Mars is leaving too. It just feels that way over on the CW.
-
i call bullshit on all those little dicktards who claim that the OC somehow went downhill after season 1. season 1 was great, but season 1 also had Oliver. yes, parts of seasons 2 and 3 were sometimes a little flat, but nothing in the OC's 4 season run was ever as irritating as the whole Oliver storyline. if you stopped liking the OC after season 1, the problem wasn't the show: it was the fact that you're quite probably a tool.
-
That would rock Lane's Mom!
-
bye.
-
I wish with the return to form of this season, that the CW would have tried to pick this up. Of course it's probably too expensive and some cast cuts would have hurt it (probably would have lost most of the "adults" which were my favorite characters). The previews make it look like Julie somehow ends up with The Bullitt tonight, and that Summer and Seth go on a break, but maybe there'll be some suprises. And for all you haters, you're probably missing the second best thing on TV right now (after BSG) by not tuning into that "other teen drama" Friday Night Lights.
-
None of your posts make any sense whatsoever. And your name is two of the most overplayed and overhyped comic book characters in the history of comic books. That is all.
-
I can't tell where the self-deprecation ends and the hidden truth begins...
-
I DO NOT believe that Herc stopped watching Gilmore Girls! The reason? Because, as much as he championed this show, and as disappointed as he (and we all were) about ASP's leaving, I just don't believe that he could resist taking a peek at how Rosenthal is running the show. And to be honest, yeah, the first few episodes (maybe even beyond that) were shaky (the dialogue didn't snap as much, the peripheral characters were all but forgotten, and it was all bogged down in the crap ASP left Rosenthal to work with), but the SHOW HAS IMPROVED GREATLY! Rosenthal has eliminated two of the show's biggest problems (Lorelai/Christopher's relationship and the insufferable April--who, by the way, was brought on by the Palladinos)and has brought the townspeople back into the show. The past two episodes were better than almost ANYTHING in season 6, and I hope it continues its gradual incline toward a satisfying series finale. Anyway, it just kind of irked me that Herc claimed that the show was done for him, when I just don't believe it. GG still deserves a talkback. So there!

brian101, I totally agree with you regarding Herc/GGs.
by excaliburffolkes
You know he's still tuning in every Tuesday night. Herc just doesn't want to admit that the show this year has been better than the last two Palladino led seasons. You're correct about the Lorelai/Christopher thing too; thank goodness it's over. Now they just need to jettison the Lorelai/Luke thing as well, since it has become every bit as big a problem. Luke has become too much of a lapdog to be taken seriusly anymore. Lorelai needs a fresh start with a brand new guy.
-
are the same people who idolize the characters on Laguna Beach and Paris Hilton. In other words, people whose viewing habits should not be counted since they are sheep whose opinions are formed by what someone else tells them to think. In all seriousness (thanks to Grey's Anatomy I am no longer comfortable saying "seriously"), last season was a melodramtic mess, largely due to Marissa. I could not stand her little sister last year and wondered why she didn't bug me this year. Then it hit me: last season most of Caitlin's scenes were either with Marissa or the equally annoying Johnny (whose death made me laugh because his life was going fine but in just a few short months after meeting Marissa he loses his girlfriend after she cheats on him, gets hit by a car and loses his spot on a pro-surfing tour, his dream, and ends up dying after falling off a cliff - And Marissa was, at least indirectly, responsible for all those things happening to him).
-
That's all fine and dandy Herc, but what do we do about Scrubs and 30 Rock? Being Canadian, I have an alternate plan: Watch Grey's at 7:00, at 9:00 tape CSI and watch Scrubs & 30 Rock (or the other way around), and watch The OC on Saturday.
-
...as we obviously are.
Yeah, the season was rocky to begin with, but it's holding its own. I think Rosenthal will end it nicely (at least, I hope so--there's talks of a 7th season, but hopefully, it's just talk). -
up your where-the-sun-don't-shine cram hole.
-
And a Chrismukkah for the...I got nothin. What rhymes with Chrismukkah?
-
is nothing more than an insidious ploy to keep pretty white people down! TV NEEDS MO' WHITE PEOPLE!
-
Yeah, Excalibur...they need to do on GG what they also need to do on The Office: Forget about the two main love stories (Luke/Lorelia & Jim/Pam). These characters were a lot better as friends without all the weird tension.
-
I meant to say earlier that GG might get an 8th season, not 7th.
-
The mom on this is crazy hot but I still couldn't be bothered to watch a whole damn episode.
-
And "The Office". Record "Grey's..." Or just watch it next week when they repeat it. (Unless you have the same luck as me, where any episode you miss of ANY series will never be repeated, ever). Stop watching "CSI" altogether, Record "Scrubs" and "30 Rock" on tuner 2. WAtch "The O.C." on OTA tuner. Don't bother with "Smallville", as it is a repeat. After "The O.C.", watch "Grey's...", "Scrubs" and "30 Rock", (sans commercials) and be all caught up before 10:30 CST.
-
Funny there's a cover of an old Legion comic. Cohen mentioned the Legion in one of the early OC episodes. Love that comic. Been collecting for years. New animated series is pretty cool.
-
The whole time. Mischa Barton and her shitty acting, whiny, needy, drunk Marissa. Without her there would have been no Oliver.
-
she had nowhere to go but the afterlife. After so many poor choices about relationships and Ryan's unwavering loyalty, even her going back to him wouldn't work out, so the character had to leave the show.
-
it was great character development, but they had to ruin it by turning the girlfriend into a psycho bitch overnight.
-
ha, good one. i liked marissa - especially when she was in her trailer wearing the panties - but i agree that they'd pretty much exhausted the possibilities for her character. if she's stayed on the show, she'd probably be developing psychic powers by now.
-
Second Trey was terrible. That was the downfall of season 2. I agree that Season 4 has returned to form. But the damage was done by Marissa's increasing annoyance and sweet baby Johnny in Season 3.
It does leave more room for reality television, yay. I hope a yak wrestles a woman for keys to a Dodge Intrepid soon. -
To awful television. 90210 for today's vapid youth scene.
-
damn you canada and ctv for not showing it today!!!!
but CTV instead of showing it at 7pm as it should've decided to air it on its broadband network.
how to describe the finale: PERFECT -
Just a suggestion. You want implausibility -- Meredith surviving for a half-hour underwater, and you know she's gonna survive, right?
-
FNL is by far the best show on network TV. But instead we get OC and Studio 60 coverage. Fing A.
-
If NBC would have given it a solid commitment out of the gate. Many more people would be watching it. Instead they dicked around, and the show will most likely be cancelled. So, why talk about that show, when Herc has clearly LOVED THE OC FROM WELL-BEYOND THE AIRING OF THE PILOT! Go look it up yourself. Herc was hyped about this show from around March of 2003.
That aside, a fitting end to a great show. The Cohen's and the Cooper's got heavily ever after. That rules. -
And the ending had a Six Feet Under "Everybody's Waiting" feel to it. Without everyone dying, of course. 92 episodes it ran, and it'll be on SoapNet with One Tree Hill when syndication comes a callin'.

Didn't watch any of season4, but I watched this one...
by danielkurland
I watched the first three seasons and knew the characters and situations well enough to be interested to see how things ended. An enjoyable enough finale, although the whole "baby is coming NOW" thing may have been a bit much. Apparently this last season was good stuff. That's a shame. Schwartz shouldn't have gotten so arrogant with the popularity of this show and gone into autopilot through mid-season 2 to 3, and things could have actually remained consistently good.
-
I never watched an episode. Didn't you have to be a teenager to like that show? Or early 20s at the most? The Professor is more advanced in his years, I'm afraid.
-
You're kidding right? Ryan vs Dawson isn't even a contest. By the time Ryan was finished pummeling Dawson AND Pacey they'd still be wondering how they lost Katie Holmes to the high preist of Ragnar of Geonosia, or whatever planet Cruise is supposed to be the messiah from.
-
And Pacey could out pussy Seth in a nerdy guy with hot girlfriend geek off. OC High School ain't got nothing on Capeside! BTW-slder78, I take it you hadn't seen Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back where James Van Der Beek tells the pie fucker from the American Pie series that, "You wouldn't last a day in the 'creek" Sorry, if I got you all confused with my joke.
-
Pray for it.
-
I genuinely liked all of the characters Marissa, and even Oliver included. Great ending though. If a finaly chokes you up a bit, it has done it's job. Fuck all the sexless geeks who come on here to badmouth a show they never watched. Pathetic rejects.
-
But i didn't watch it last night so who knows. In defense of Grey's, I rarely watch it but i caught it last night and thought it was pretty well done. Meredith survived because she was hypothermic cuz the water was fuckin freezing, so it wasn't that implausible- people have lived for a long time and been brought back when drowned in freezing water. That being said I won't be watching it next week or anything, but it wasn't bad. I actually thought the Dawsons Creek finale was pretty well done- I had watched it when i was in HS for the first couple seasons then lost interest and tuned in just to see how they wrapped evreything up 4 years later. It was pretty satisfying, all things considered.
-
Because NBC didn't support it well enough, then F it? Nice stance. OC is just another 90201 clone. WTF is Herc doing covering this stuff? It should be covered by 17 magazine. Herc, do yourself a favor and catch FNL. Someone needs to drum up support for the best drama on TV.
-
Blasphemy! I tell you. BLASPHEMY!
We need some non-white tv show love up in dis here BEEOTCH! -
He was the heart and soul of the O.C. He should have held down Marissa and let Trey finish what he strted on the beach.
-
is the best show on TV and will get a 2nd season I guarandamntee it!
-
The first season is the best, but they did too much too soon. The second season was good, peaking with "The Rainy Day Woman" (probably one of the best on the series). The third season was, unfortunately, terrible. You liked Volchok, Herc? Really? I didn't, I thought he was a one-dimensional, cliched character. I think that Josh Schwartz and Allen Heinberg were the heart and soul of the show. That's why Seth was so into comics, because of Heinberg. What I think happened was that Schwartz scaled back his involvement after season one and left it entirely for season three. Heinberg was the reason that season two was able to hold ground and when Heinberg left in season three, well, it was headed to the end. Something to take notice of is the change in the style of the show. Schwartz had pitched it originally as a comedy like Freaks and Geeks or Undeclared, but Fox told him that both those shows had been cancelled, so he came back and said it was a show about rich kids in Orange County. If you watch this season, it stopped being such a soap opera and became much more of a comedy show. As for Mischa Barton... She's the one you're most likely to see on Cinemax at two a.m. in three years. Ben McKenzie has already proved his acting chops, as has Rachel Bilson in The Last Kiss, and I have a good feeling about Adam Brody in "in The Land of Women". But Barton? The second season premiere where she says, "You want to know what my problem is?" and then starts screaming? That SHATTERED the unintentional comedy scale.
-
Pretty obvious that hercules is a girl and the name was chosen to be the most masculine she could think of.
-
That shite shouldn't have been on tv in the first place.
-
You knew where it was going, but still loved every minute of it. Without Caleb, the first half of Season 2 with Lindsy would have been unwatchable.
-
Good end to the series. They wrapped things up nicely. They even found a way to include Marissa in a way that, for the first time, made me feel bad that the character died. All in all, one of the better series finales I have seen.
-
The link between the o.c. and buffy is undoubtedly clear. The gritty real looking Trey who we do not ever see after the pilot is the friend of Zander's who gets turned into a vampire in the first buffy episode. Awesome synergy. And what would be wrong with Herc being a girl?
-
"The gritty real looking Trey who we do not ever see after the pilot"...shows up in the Thanksgiving episode in the first season.
-
Just something wrong with a girl pretending to be a dude.
-
The last scene where Ryan the architect sees the disenfranchised kid that was just like him at one time was touching and a great way to end the series.
