SWEEPS DAY 22!! J.J. Abrams Directed Tonight’s Episode Of THE OFFICE!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
I am – Hercules!!
Herc loved last week’s vampire-centric “Office,” directed by Joss Whedon. So that’s weird. When did Herc start liking Whedon’s work?
But what will Herc make of this week’s “Office,” directed by J.J. Abrams?
Wellsir, Herc thinks J.J. Abrams a TV god. Abrmas wrote and produced the “Felicity” pilot. He wrote and directed the “Alias” pilot. He co-wrote and directed the “Lost” pilot.
And, if the fates align, Abrams will be permitted to shepherd the greatest “Star Trek” story ever told. Something akin, perhaps, to Chris Claremont’s spectacular “Star Trek: Debt of Honor”
!
Here’s how TV Guide describes tonight’s episode, “Cocktails”:
Michael and Jan attend a party at a Dunder Mifflin bigwig's home, where they finally go public with their heretofore hushed romance. While at the party, Jim meets Karen's ex. And the rest of the office dwellers are also in a partying mood, as they head out for a boozy happy hour.
The promos, with Michael’s straightjacket, look hilarious.
Would Herc be happier if Abrams spent the week writing a “Lost” episode instead of directing an “Office” episode? Yes, Herc would! “The Office” is plenty funny without Abrams’ help. But the two “Lost” episodes Abrams wrote with Damon Lindelof defined the greatness of “Lost.”
Will Herc skip tonight’s “The Office” in protest? No, Herc will not skip tonight’s “The Office” in protest! And you’d best not either!
8:30 p.m. Thursday. NBC.

...that this show is not on on a mainstream channel in primetime in the UK - I never get around to watching it.
-
So I guess the episode will have a great setup followed by nothing worth watching?
-
tell him to get away from our office
-
Every night I fall asleep to a playlist of all three seasons. I hope Carrell can stick around for just one more season before he rockets to superstardom.
-
And where's the Michael Mann episode filmed inside a pair of 8 million dollar beachfront condos? Where's the David Lynch episode where Steve Carrel has dream about Jon Stewart talking backwards? I'm sure they'll be HUGE on iTunes...
-
hahaha you are out of your deluded little mind, bud.
Bob C. Cock you are meant to be dead, dude? anyway, JJ is a massive fan of the UK office so I don't blame him for doing a US one, It must be a dream project for him. I for one can't wait to see it! -
Andy is absent...did he get kicked off the show?
-
Andy is in anger management and should be back soon
-
Though I would enjoy it if they actually played it when the POTUS entered a room. Maybe on 24.
-
Only to answer them nanonseconds afterward? Probably not. Nevertheless, good stuff Herc. Last week's Office was PRICELESS. This one should keep the streak going.
-
or was it something else?
-
Yes, Herc would! Can't wait for tonight's ep. Dwight is a PRIME candidate for Room 23.
-
Not that Scrubs would need them, but (if you have ever read one of my posts in another The Office talkback you can stop reading now) The Office sucks in every version: The UK-version, the US-version and the German version named Stromberg.
-
'Would an idiot do that?"
And if they would, I do NOT do that thing.
http://www.cafepress.com/colbert08hq -
Whedon did last week's episode.
-
Next season the writers have Jim set up an elaborate prank to make Dwight think hes living the same day over and over. Jim should get everyone in the office involved except Andy and Michael so they think Dwight has gone crazy. That would be hilarious.
-
Worst episode ever last night...nuff said.
-
the bat set up from last week. Good luck. By the way, JJ, I totally agree - last night's Lost was the worst of all time. I never imagined "The Others" could be so freaking boring. Shit or get off the pot my man. Either move their story forward, or quit wasting our time.
-
honestly, I never would have guessed Whedon was behind the camera last week. This show is kinda director-proof.
-
Yes he does. Is Billy looking forward to tonights Office? All signs point to yes.
-
Cue flashbacks to the distant past, in exotic locales like Phuket.....but wait there's more! Let's introduce a good dose of mysticism, fortune telling, or miraculous cures sound good. And then finally end the episode with a large words "The Office" emblazoned on the screen for dramatic effect.....I'm not a jaded Lost fan...
-
Shrewd move sis! I mean, The Office.
-
This guy!! Hm. Not so effective in print. Last week's episode was great, a return to form after the lackluster wedding episode. This is the only show left on television I actually get excited to watch every week.
-
why do you keep posting in the talkback? Well, I'm off to go to the comic book store and talk about how comics are childish and only for nerds, then it's off to a sports bar where I can talk about how much I hate sports and how much beer tastes bad.
-
...anyone who's actually watched the show still claims to hate The Office. I was cool toward the first season because much of it felt so much like a straight retread of the British series (and for folks who hadn't seen that show, I bet it was great), but once it went its own way it got very entertaining very quickly. If you're saying you hate it, just do me a favor and watch it once. If you still hate it, that's cool. But I'm going to ask you why because I'm genuinely curious.
-
I love me some Office Thursday. I look forward to it all week. Who has two thumbs and loves 'em some Office Thursday?? THIS GUY!!!
-
wasn't signed on past the episode where he totally freaked out. by the time they announced him as a lead character, the sweeps episodes had already been filmed.
-
A Groundhog's Day episode fucking with Dwight is actually a really good idea. They are getting more elaborate with their Dwight pranks, and instead of having difficulty suspending disbelief (like one would expect with last week's vampire ep.), I'm finding it to be increasingly hilarious.
-
It'll take three years,$81 million, Andy will get recast six times, but it'll be worth it.
-
More... hazing...
-
I really like The Office, but bringing in these "stunt directors" is just pointless, can you really tell the difference between them and the other "nameless" directors that are usually on the show? No, they have a format (a good one i think) that is followed no matter who is behind the camera. They're wasting their money on these guys, the usual directors do just as good work for less pay i'm sure.....
-
Has actually been fine with me, because now I sorta miss him, whereas I was previously just starting to get a bit tired of him. If that makes sense. And I agree on the diminished returns of having these guest directors...the formula is pretty set, and there's not a whole lot more these guys bring to the table. The only time last week I actually 'saw' Whedon's touch was his framing on the one-er, the in-and-out of Michael and Ryan in the car, with Ryan in the rearview mirror. But otherwise, it felt like pretty much every other episode.
-
is Roy going into a violent rampage at the bar. I laughed my ass off even though its probably supposed to be upsetting.
-
What the hell is with F? This is America, say fuck right or move to Iran. Oh, and F chinese buffets.
-
Wonderful. Glad to see the Toby/Pam stuff is making it past the cutting room floor this week. Maybe because Lieberstein wrote it.
-
This show is so, so wonderful. The characters are perfectly defined, and yeah, I agree, you really can't see a major difference between directors. Maybe a slight one, but nothing significant.
-
So awesome!
-
Hope no one minds my "play by play" going on here.
-
has happened twice now and is so awful, but funny.
-
That was sheer Office perfection.
-
Everything worked. Could have used more Ryan though, but what can you do. And that final scene with Roy could be interpeted both dramatic and humorous.
-
Looks to be a good episode.
-
That spider egg line and water ring visual gag clinched it.
-
WIG that John Krasinski had on tonight. He must have had to cut his hair for the movie he's in with George Clooney.
I wonder how the Roy/Jim fight is gonna play out. I hope Jim doesn't puss out like before. -
By far. It has been slowly declining all season. I almost stopped watching. This pretty much redeemed the whole thing. They need to bring back JJ for every episode or something, because this was great. I know he probably didn't write it, but whatever.
-
on 30 Rock, Rachel Dratch keeps appearing as random characters. I know she got fucked over for her role, but it just seems awkward to keep seeing her. Funny show though.
-
Big Time. "I run a small business making fake ID's out of the trunk of my car ..." I love that a real guy - Creed Gratton - plays a character named Creed Gratton, and that half of Creed's "interview flashbacks" are real crazy shit he's done while being a burnout hippie roadie for the Who.
-
acceleration from calm to total rage is the fact the minute Roy threw the beer mug, his brother (without knowing what was going on) just started busting shit up.
-
Because it wasn't.
-
... was hilarious. Even funnier than Dwight inexplicably appraising his boss' boss' boss' boss' house. Which is saying something.
-
Lots of great ideas that have earned him millions, but he can't quite finish anything off for true greatness.
Pity. -
Damn, a great Office, Scrubs and 30 Rock. Sure, maybe 30 Rock benefits from going last, but still very enjoyable. And my god, Dwight in that rocking chair was fucking hilarious. "Is this oak?"
-
A great night for the NBC comedies, though I haven't watched Earl yet. I've gotta say too that that stuff with Roy was so heated. I honestly thought he was going to fuck or cunt with that. Great stuff though. And I think sweeps ends next wednesday, so does that mean new episodes will stop and we'll have to wait to see the Roy/Jim resolution.
-
Nevermind, I just checked, and next week is listed as a repeat the one right before the Scranton branch closes. That sucks.
-
not that I'm complaining, I like its style, but I think these "guest director" stints are really much ado about nothing.
-
LOL. Which one of you assholes won the "Write a Line for Dwight" contest?
-
You of course mean Stamford.
-
Now Ramis, Whedon or Abrams WRITING an episode? That would be cool and actually different.
-
Holy shit that was a funny episode. "Yeah, suck it! I read the paper!"
-
That was an amazingly well directed episode. It was finally back to looking like a documentary like it was supposed to.
-
two best shows on TV right now. it would be nice to have a 30 rock talkback, but I don't know if the show's caught on with enough folks yet. just like the office, it started out a bit awkward, but quickly became funny after getting its sea legs around the 3rd of 4th episode. and somehow tina fey gets hotter with each episode.
-
"I want to take it out behind the middle school and get it pregnant!" this line will make entertainment weekly's "sound bits" section next week. mark my words.
-
where the TRUTH about Pam and Jim is finally revealed to Roy, but the Truth about anything on Lost remains as elusive as that fucking smoke monster. BTW i was ok with Lost this week, especially when Jack called out Zeke whe Zeke asked, "what kind of people do you think we are?" And Jack say, "Uh the kind of people who steal kids, kidnap pregnant hot chicks, and hang the lead singer from an Oasis cover band from a tree." Yeah I know it's not a cover band...TRIBUTE band. What? The band's made up? The Gallegher's should sue.
-
Let's not forget good directors also work with ACTORS. So while it's a good thing that the show is visually consistent, these guest directors can get unique line readings or improvisations from their actors, and select the best takes for their episodes. And the guys they've gotten are huge fans of the show, so they're probably working for peanuts.
-
When Roy's brother just casually walked up to the bar and started busting shite up with Roy I peed just a little from laughing so hard. That's where it went from being kind of dramatic to flat-out hilarious.
-
I can watch Saw type shit all day and not blink an eye, but when Roy instantly transitioned into total rage I was taken aback for a minute. It definitely seemed more genuinely dangerous than 90% of the crap that passes for "thrillers" these days. I think a lot of that might have been Pam's reaction shot work. Two and a half seasons of half the show being reaction shots has really got these actors primed.
-
...need to have their own show called "Nerdy Girl Tickle Fight". I doubt I'd watch anything else. Ever.
-
With the celeb guest directors and/or writers? I think last nights had a LITTLE bit of different angles/framing. But otherwise, I haven't noticed anything different/better/worse in ANY of these shows; Gervais, Abrams, Whedon. I think this is a good thing...the show is great for a reason, so you have to keep the main formula intact. OF course, the Indian party ep. where the Indian chick cast member wrote and/or directed was unique, but that wasn't all that great an ep, IMO.
-
It was too much for me this time. Wify was kinda into Michael though...weird. Michael could have had double duty.
-
and play in his own for awhile. How about concentrating on making the next Star Trek movie NOT SUCK!Fuck Lost.
-
I think what was so jarring about Roy's outburst is how 'real' it was. That kind of thing would translate easily to domestic violence. Also, has anyone noticed how much Roy looks like Galen from BSG? Am I crazy?
Last night's Scrubs was weak too. If not for Eliot popping out of the moving box, it would have been a waste. -
but really, isn't this guy spreading himself a little thin?
-
But at the end when Michael and Jan were having that painfully hilarious conversation in the car, and then at the end Dwight pops his head into frame - brilliant! Yeah, Dwight was over the top in this episode, but the other stuff was so heavy (for a sitcom) -- Jan is just totally fucked up, and the angle that every time Michael has ever been a moron in front of her it's just been getting her hotter to abuse herself by being with him is both funny and cringe-worthy like only the Office can be. And I agree that when Roy snapped like that, it was disturbing (especially after mousey little Pam had been saying "I'm going to be assertive" all episode). It's disturbing because it's so real: Roy is basically a nice guy, but so simple he's always about two seconds from losing it. Of course, they had to keep it from being too heavy by bringing in the comic relief of Roy's brother being so mad about the jetskis he was immediately ready to trash the bar. But it was a good episode, both more funny and more sophisticated than any other sitcom on. And don't tell me you're not a little scared for Jim after hearing Roy's last line of the episode.
-
Jim doesn't like to talk about himself much. We didn't find out Jim was a High School basketball star until they played basketball... so maybe we won't find out he's a 12th degree black belt in jujitsu until he has to put Roy on his ass. Wouldn't THAT just be frickin hilarious. But I'm betting that Jim gets his ass kicked, during which, he confesses his love for/to Pam, and that just endears him to Pam even more, and they finally get together.
-
Yes, the Roy trick is the fact that the writers have made Roy seem like an okay guy this past season. He just was self-centered and took Pam for granted. Him being so upset and trying to change made you not be so quick to root for Jim. Then, when you've been thinking he's not so bad, BAM, he goes all psycho. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to laugh or be afraid, but I really didn't expect it. The only thing is, I don't know if it fit with his character. But I remember the one time we saw angry Roy was when he thought "Halpert" was getting too cozy with Pam. I guess Pam's natural mousy personality kept her from ever seeing him go ballistic like that. But that violent outburst was kinda scary. I'm looking for Roy to show up at the office, go after Jim, and then have Dwight go kung-fu on his ass to save the day.
-
Jan ALREADY liked him and now he buddied around with the CFO...
-
might've been one of the most disturbing things I've seen, and I don't know if I necessarily agree with it as a direction for the show. I like the idea of Roy not being the cliche asshole future-wifebeater and just your typical sports-loving, beer-drinking lug. It made the whole Jim/Pam/Roy thing more subtle and grayer. Maybe after Jim gets smacked around by Roy it'll cool him off of Pam for a long while, which can only be a good thing.
-
He's not just "your typical sports-loving, beer-drinking lug". He's always treated Pam like crap, his outburst was the pinnacle of that. That said, I think they need to work something into the story where Pam needs to dress up as a librarian every episode. That would fix everything. :)
-
..who wakes up in the middle of the night to find Dwight rocking in the middle of your room. Lots of years of therapy to follow......
-
rather than potentially punchy. I mean, we all know (or were raised by) guys that forget holidays and birthdays and sat around all day drinking beer. The outburst was dangerously close to the kinda guy that smacks a woman around... which kind of takes the comedy out of the question, and loses all sympathy for the character of Roy. Good acting job by Denham, though. Can't wait to see him in The Nines.
-
I should've noted that Roy was probably a little drunk at the time. And Roy was always a kind of jerk, but not THAT kind of jerk. At least, from what we've seen. And even Pam looked shocked over what he did.
-
No, that was not supposed to be Jon Stewart. It was supposed to be one of the producers who was courting Josh.
-
We should be glad JJ has nothing to do with the next episode, but because if he did then Jim Roy and Pam wouldn't be in it at all, and intsead we'd see what Andy's been doing this whole time and the pay off for that last line wouldn't come until the episode AFTER that and then it would be kind of anticlimactic like Roy coming in to work saying he was drunk and we wouldn't know for sure if he's going to kill Jim or not for the rest of the season....just saying.
-
any guy would have acted the same way minus the bar smashing stuff.... plus she told him that it happened Before the wedding, in his head that could have been the reason she called off the wedding ... so yeah pam's a bitch
-
Big shocker there.
-
Funny fucking episode! Steve Carell's Michael is so hopelessly clueless, he wins points just by being so obtuse and yet so endearingly persistent. I haven't watched many episodes of The Office because so much of its humour is "cringe-inducing." You know, where the funny comes from someone else's sheer idiocy, or a huge social faux-pas, embarrassment, etc. But last night's ep and last week's were funny as hell. And I quit watching the Gervais version of The Office for the same reason; it's just too hard to watch without squirming in my seat at the unbelievable stupidity and awkwardness brought about by the character's behavior. (Although I can tolerate Extras better, it still irritates me for the same reasons) And yes, I LOVE 30 Rock! It's got some of the funniest lines, characters and damn good actors. (Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin: who knew they'd be so damn good together?) Thursday nights are funny again on NBC...
-
NO? then you are an idiot.
-
if they were in an office every once in a while.
-
that they've been having a lot of episodes out of the office, and he feels the show is stronger when they are in the office. Think, Phyllis' wedding, Ryan and Michael at Ryan's college, the bar and cocktail party. It does make sense.
-
But they trashed the bar before the big upset feeling over the jetskis, no? I assumed they were upset at the end because they had to spend the jetski money on the damage they did to the bar. This wouldn't make sense if the dude trashed the bar because he was mad about the jetskis, as you say, right? Its backward.
-
And true fans of the Shrute should check out www.myspace.com/raptorquest and watch the sixth video blog on the site. Rainn Wilson gives a truly geeky monologue on ninjas and raptors towards the end of it. Gold.
