SWEEPS DAY 22!! J.J. Abrams Directed Tonight’s Episode Of THE OFFICE!!

Published at:  Feb 22, 2007 2:04:39 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Herc loved last week’s vampire-centric “Office,” directed by Joss Whedon. So that’s weird. When did Herc start liking Whedon’s work?

But what will Herc make of this week’s “Office,” directed by J.J. Abrams?

Wellsir, Herc thinks J.J. Abrams a TV god. Abrmas wrote and produced the “Felicity” pilot. He wrote and directed the “Alias” pilot. He co-wrote and directed the “Lost” pilot.

And, if the fates align, Abrams will be permitted to shepherd the greatest “Star Trek” story ever told. Something akin, perhaps, to Chris Claremont’s spectacular “Star Trek: Debt of Honor”!

Here’s how TV Guide describes tonight’s episode, “Cocktails”:

Michael and Jan attend a party at a Dunder Mifflin bigwig's home, where they finally go public with their heretofore hushed romance. While at the party, Jim meets Karen's ex. And the rest of the office dwellers are also in a partying mood, as they head out for a boozy happy hour.

The promos, with Michael’s straightjacket, look hilarious.

Would Herc be happier if Abrams spent the week writing a “Lost” episode instead of directing an “Office” episode? Yes, Herc would! “The Office” is plenty funny without Abrams’ help. But the two “Lost” episodes Abrams wrote with Damon Lindelof defined the greatness of “Lost.”

Will Herc skip tonight’s “The Office” in protest? No, Herc will not skip tonight’s “The Office” in protest! And you’d best not either!

8:30 p.m. Thursday. NBC.

What a waste of directors and money

    by juliusseizure

I really like The Office, but bringing in these "stunt directors" is just pointless, can you really tell the difference between them and the other "nameless" directors that are usually on the show? No, they have a format (a good one i think) that is followed no matter who is behind the camera. They're wasting their money on these guys, the usual directors do just as good work for less pay i'm sure.....

    Being without Andy...

    by catvutt

Has actually been fine with me, because now I sorta miss him, whereas I was previously just starting to get a bit tired of him. If that makes sense. And I agree on the diminished returns of having these guest directors...the formula is pretty set, and there's not a whole lot more these guys bring to the table. The only time last week I actually 'saw' Whedon's touch was his framing on the one-er, the in-and-out of Michael and Ryan in the car, with Ryan in the rearview mirror. But otherwise, it felt like pretty much every other episode.

    Directors Don't Just Point Cameras

    by topaz4206

Let's not forget good directors also work with ACTORS. So while it's a good thing that the show is visually consistent, these guest directors can get unique line readings or improvisations from their actors, and select the best takes for their episodes. And the guys they've gotten are huge fans of the show, so they're probably working for peanuts.

    by fluffyunbound

I can watch Saw type shit all day and not blink an eye, but when Roy instantly transitioned into total rage I was taken aback for a minute. It definitely seemed more genuinely dangerous than 90% of the crap that passes for "thrillers" these days. I think a lot of that might have been Pam's reaction shot work. Two and a half seasons of half the show being reaction shots has really got these actors primed.

With the celeb guest directors and/or writers? I think last nights had a LITTLE bit of different angles/framing. But otherwise, I haven't noticed anything different/better/worse in ANY of these shows; Gervais, Abrams, Whedon. I think this is a good thing...the show is great for a reason, so you have to keep the main formula intact. OF course, the Indian party ep. where the Indian chick cast member wrote and/or directed was unique, but that wasn't all that great an ep, IMO.

I think what was so jarring about Roy's outburst is how 'real' it was. That kind of thing would translate easily to domestic violence. Also, has anyone noticed how much Roy looks like Galen from BSG? Am I crazy?
Last night's Scrubs was weak too. If not for Eliot popping out of the moving box, it would have been a waste.

This was probably the writing, not the directing:

But at the end when Michael and Jan were having that painfully hilarious conversation in the car, and then at the end Dwight pops his head into frame - brilliant! Yeah, Dwight was over the top in this episode, but the other stuff was so heavy (for a sitcom) -- Jan is just totally fucked up, and the angle that every time Michael has ever been a moron in front of her it's just been getting her hotter to abuse herself by being with him is both funny and cringe-worthy like only the Office can be. And I agree that when Roy snapped like that, it was disturbing (especially after mousey little Pam had been saying "I'm going to be assertive" all episode). It's disturbing because it's so real: Roy is basically a nice guy, but so simple he's always about two seconds from losing it. Of course, they had to keep it from being too heavy by bringing in the comic relief of Roy's brother being so mad about the jetskis he was immediately ready to trash the bar. But it was a good episode, both more funny and more sophisticated than any other sitcom on. And don't tell me you're not a little scared for Jim after hearing Roy's last line of the episode.

    You know...

    by fanboy71

Jim doesn't like to talk about himself much. We didn't find out Jim was a High School basketball star until they played basketball... so maybe we won't find out he's a 12th degree black belt in jujitsu until he has to put Roy on his ass. Wouldn't THAT just be frickin hilarious. But I'm betting that Jim gets his ass kicked, during which, he confesses his love for/to Pam, and that just endears him to Pam even more, and they finally get together.

    The Roy trick

    by bizarrojerry

Yes, the Roy trick is the fact that the writers have made Roy seem like an okay guy this past season. He just was self-centered and took Pam for granted. Him being so upset and trying to change made you not be so quick to root for Jim. Then, when you've been thinking he's not so bad, BAM, he goes all psycho. I wasn't sure if I was supposed to laugh or be afraid, but I really didn't expect it. The only thing is, I don't know if it fit with his character. But I remember the one time we saw angry Roy was when he thought "Halpert" was getting too cozy with Pam. I guess Pam's natural mousy personality kept her from ever seeing him go ballistic like that. But that violent outburst was kinda scary. I'm looking for Roy to show up at the office, go after Jim, and then have Dwight go kung-fu on his ass to save the day.

    Roy's outburst

    by therevengeofbayouwilly

might've been one of the most disturbing things I've seen, and I don't know if I necessarily agree with it as a direction for the show. I like the idea of Roy not being the cliche asshole future-wifebeater and just your typical sports-loving, beer-drinking lug. It made the whole Jim/Pam/Roy thing more subtle and grayer. Maybe after Jim gets smacked around by Roy it'll cool him off of Pam for a long while, which can only be a good thing.

But Roy's always been a big jerk.

    by zarles

He's not just "your typical sports-loving, beer-drinking lug". He's always treated Pam like crap, his outburst was the pinnacle of that. That said, I think they need to work something into the story where Pam needs to dress up as a librarian every episode. That would fix everything. :)

I always thought he was more thoughtless

    by therevengeofbayouwilly

rather than potentially punchy. I mean, we all know (or were raised by) guys that forget holidays and birthdays and sat around all day drinking beer. The outburst was dangerously close to the kinda guy that smacks a woman around... which kind of takes the comedy out of the question, and loses all sympathy for the character of Roy. Good acting job by Denham, though. Can't wait to see him in The Nines.

    one other Roy thing

    by bizarrojerry

I should've noted that Roy was probably a little drunk at the time. And Roy was always a kind of jerk, but not THAT kind of jerk. At least, from what we've seen. And even Pam looked shocked over what he did.

Was that supposed to be Jon Stewart on 30 Rock?...

    by defunct gamer

No, that was not supposed to be Jon Stewart. It was supposed to be one of the producers who was courting Josh.

    by drath

We should be glad JJ has nothing to do with the next episode, but because if he did then Jim Roy and Pam wouldn't be in it at all, and intsead we'd see what Andy's been doing this whole time and the pay off for that last line wouldn't come until the episode AFTER that and then it would be kind of anticlimactic like Roy coming in to work saying he was drunk and we wouldn't know for sure if he's going to kill Jim or not for the rest of the season....just saying.

    "You're acting weird..."

    by zardoz

Funny fucking episode! Steve Carell's Michael is so hopelessly clueless, he wins points just by being so obtuse and yet so endearingly persistent. I haven't watched many episodes of The Office because so much of its humour is "cringe-inducing." You know, where the funny comes from someone else's sheer idiocy, or a huge social faux-pas, embarrassment, etc. But last night's ep and last week's were funny as hell. And I quit watching the Gervais version of The Office for the same reason; it's just too hard to watch without squirming in my seat at the unbelievable stupidity and awkwardness brought about by the character's behavior. (Although I can tolerate Extras better, it still irritates me for the same reasons) And yes, I LOVE 30 Rock! It's got some of the funniest lines, characters and damn good actors. (Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin: who knew they'd be so damn good together?) Thursday nights are funny again on NBC...

that they've been having a lot of episodes out of the office, and he feels the show is stronger when they are in the office. Think, Phyllis' wedding, Ryan and Michael at Ryan's college, the bar and cocktail party. It does make sense.

But they trashed the bar before the big upset feeling over the jetskis, no? I assumed they were upset at the end because they had to spend the jetski money on the damage they did to the bar. This wouldn't make sense if the dude trashed the bar because he was mad about the jetskis, as you say, right? Its backward.
