New York Comic-Con featuring Stephen King, Eli Roth and... Quint?

Published at:  Feb 21, 2007 8:42:03 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a little note. In two days I'm jumping on a plane to New York City. Provided Chicago O'Hare doesn't fuck me over, I will be attending the New York Comic-Con for a day and a half, Friday afternoon through Sunday morning.

Saturday is a big, busy day. Early on in the day is a panel with Stephen King, Jae Lee, Joe Quesada, Peter David, Robin Furth, Ralph Macchio (I don't think it's the karate kid) and Richard Isanove all about the Dark Tower comic book at Marvel.

I've got the fear, butterflies in my tummy, because right after the panel I have a 1:1 sit down interview with Stephen King. I'd be lying if I said he was anything less than an idol of mine and the fact that I get to spend 15 plus minutes talking nothing but Dark Tower with the man has me both giddy and terrified. You better believe JJ Abrams is coming up, although I'm sure he'll be bombarded at the panel beforehand.

To add on to the fear, Lionsgate has asked me to moderate their Hostel II panel from 5pm-6pm and I have not one little clue what the hell to say to the 2000 people expected to be in the room. I think I'll let the real talent on the panel with me do most of the talking. That's a good strategy, methinks. Eli Roth, Roger Bart and Heather Mattarazzo will be there and Lionsgate promises some exclusive Hostel II footage.

So, hope to see some of you folks there. I'm in and out so quickly (I won't be on the ground 48 hours) I won't have much time, but if you see me around the Con feel free to say hi. Have pity on a fat geek and don't jeer too loudly at the Hostel II panel!

If you want more info on the New York Comic Con, their website is right here!!!

    by randall flagg

I used to agree with the Jackman-as-Roland crowd, but the more I look at him the more I think he's just too young. I'm thinking an unknown for Roland would be the best way to go (unless they can find the guy who played old John Connor at the beginning of T2) And Aisha Tyler or Sophie Okonedo as Susannah.

    Questions for Dark Tower fans...

    by beastie

I've never read the Dark Tower series. I'm not a huge fan of Stephen King. I tend to like his ideas more than his writing. Anyway, not being a big fan of Stephen King, is there a chance that I will enjoy these books? It's quite the time investment if I'm not going to like them. Also, are the comics remakes of the books or different tales within the Dark Tower universe? If I've never read the books, will the comics make sense to me?

Great actor but I have a feeling I would be imagining Black Adder's fop if he got the role. Plus, too British (not that that is necessarily a bad thing). Roland should have an American West accent. Borg has spoken.

    The Macchio answer

    by carmillavondoom

They aren't the same guy. The Macchio at Marvel has been around there so long, he worked on the original Transformers comic back in 1984 if I'm not mistaken. Robert Kirkman actually jokes about the name similarity in the introduction to the Marvel Zombies hardback.

    Hugh Laurie would be perfect...

    by jollysleeve

...and I said as much in the other thread. He's even got the perfect height (Long Tall and Ugly). Remember Roland throughout the books is never described as a Lou Ferrigno type. In fact, he's practically a wisp of a man (most obviously in Drawing of the Three), so really, Laurie could simply bulk up just a little (in case he has to have a shirtless scene) and he'd be perfect. Laurie also has the benefit of (which I personally feel is mandatory) whenever you look at his face, you can tell there is always something going on behind those eyes. Roland is no dumb jock, is what I'm saying. Check out the youtube clip of Hugh Laurie's House casting session with the dark stubble and dark rings under his eyes....... And no, I'm not saying it's practical or easy to cast him when he's already committed to House. (In the last thread, someone brought up such arguments against various actors. Basically things that only slick bottom-line Hollywood producers would care about.) I'm just saying he'd make a great Roland. We're merely talking about who would be the best actor for the role, not who is "feasible." Or who would demand too high a salary, or who is already "committed" to another studio, or whatever.

    by rev_skarekroe

...I'm not a big Stephen King fan. I'd read a few of his novels and short stories before starting the Dark Tower series, but I have to say it's the best thing he's ever done. Sometimes his style still gets on my nerves, but unlike (say) "The Stand" I never wish the books would just hurry up and end.

    Skimn and Beastie...

    by somerichs

Skimn, that's some funny shit...Beastie, the first book is just ok (there, I said it), 2,3, and 4 will absolutely own you and you'll likely not get a lot of sleep while reading them (unless you're a fairly fast reader and have plenty of time during the day to read), while 5, 6 and 7 could go either way for you, though by that point you'll probably have no choice but to read them just to see how they end...also, DT may serve as your "gateway drug" into the world of SK. If you didn't already know, he manages to tie a lot of his other novels into the DT universe, though thise tie-ins don't always pay off as well as they could/should have. I for one loved his book "Insomnia" and there are some serious tie-ins to that (though unfortunately that's one of the ones that didn't have as good a payoff as it should have). "Go, then. There are other worlds than these..."

    Flip63Hole and Somerichs

    by beastie

His style of writing, just doesn't suit me. I've read, by King, The Shining, The Stand, It, Pet Semetary, Skeleton Crew, Cell, and probably a few others. I'm not saying that he is a bad writer, just not for me, most of the time. I am interested in The Dark Tower series because everyone, here, seems to think that it's amazing. Somerichs, I tend not to judge book series on the first book. If that were true, I would consider Sandman to be mediocre. So, If I don't like the first book, I'll give the second a try, anyway.

    by rupee88

I recently read "It" (well, listened to the audiobook) and it just reminded me how magnificent Stephen King's talent is. I'm not even a fan of the horror genre, but he is just brilliant with his understanding of the human condition and so many other things. There's a reason why he is such a giant in his field.

    Do ya kennit?

    by jumping windows

Sorry, I can't imagine Hugh Laurie using the "poorly-implemented, ill-conceived afterthought of a language" dubbed the Mid-World dialect. All of a sudden between Books IV and V, Roland remembered he talked like a northeastern hillbilly, using phrases and slangs that sounded more forced than prison ass-rape. "Say thankya", "Do it please ya", "Come, Commala" "Cum in ma tamale". Talk about take you out of the story. There was no reason to change the tone of the characters as much as he did by using this stupid device. But besides, Hugh Laurie exudes too much intelligence to be Roland. Roland is a blunt instrument with a keen intuition. He is not smart. Although he has the rugged look and the detached demeanor, Hugh is not the right actor. Viggo has already played a subtle killing machine (Tom Stall) and a heroic wanderer (Aragorn). He is also the right age. There is absolutely no one more suited to this role than Viggo Mortensen. Land him, James Franco as Eddie Dean,Naomie Harris as Susannah, and some creepy English fuck as Walter (Ralph Fiennes?), and this MINISERIES will kick ever-loving ass. HBO won't do it, cuz they don't have the funds. Big babies laying off people left and right. It can't be a TV movie. It might work cinematically, but they'll need a PJ license to cut four hour movies apiece. Yeah, shit will have to be cut out, but Harry Potter hasn't suffered from cutting the house-elf preservation society subplot. The Dark Tower books are my favorite books of all time, and even those shiteaters called V, VI and VII are still ten times better than those mindless James Patterson novels that are always topping the charts.

    by headsakimbo

Clancy Brown is Roland for me, he may not quite look right but I think he would just be able to play the part. He`s about the right age, height and could certainly do the voice, although I do quite like the idea of Hugh Laurie.
Also - Gina Torres as Susannah Dean, Rik Mayall as Dandelo, Tiffany Mulheron as Susan Delgado, Christopher Lloyd as Father Callahan, Billy West as the voice of Blaine, David Hewlett as the man in black, David Hyde Pierce as the pusher and maybe Tyler Maine as Tick Tock man.
