BULLSHIT!! KIDNAPPED!! JASON OF STAR COMMAND!! Herc’s Season-Box DVD Vault!!

Published at:  Feb 20, 2007 3:03:56 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

For a laugh-out-loud funny series, the mighty and mighty disarming “Bullshit!” has an awful lot on its mind. Far less partisan than Michael Moore’s work, it gleefully attacks thinking both liberal (recycling, reparations) and conservative (gay-bashing, organized religion) with equal aplomb. It’s won Writer Guild awards (Penn & Teller serve as two of its six writers as well as its hosts) and has been nominated for Emmys, and its second-season episode on recycling makes me nuts every time I think about it.

One of the show’s virtues is its transparency. Notes Penn Jillette during the fourth-season episode “Reparations,” “Man, we are so glad we found John McWorter, an African-American, to make these points - because we’re just too fuckin’ white to say some of this stuff! We’re even too white to say ‘black’ comfortably.” To underscore Gillette’s discomfort, two scowling black men wearing postal uniforms and toting bags of hate-mail arrive on stage to stare at him. “So we’re saying ‘African-American’ no matter how many syllables it adds to the show!”

The “Reparations” episode deals with the “black reparations movement” seeking recompense for slavery, as well as Indian casinos and Japanese-American internment camps. We also meet a strange black man, H.K. Edgerton, who looks like something out of a “Chappelle’s Show” sketch as he marches around downtown Asheville, N.C., in a rebel uniform ferrying a massive Confederate flag. Edgerton says he’s doing this to force the U.S. government into paying reparations to the South for warring with it 145 years ago - but we’re ultimately left with the impression Edgerton’s mostly just trying to meet girls.

The “Prostitution” episode starts by telling us sex-for-hire is perfectly legal in many parts of the world, and until 1910 was legal also in most parts of the United States. A biblical scholar and theologian in a green pullover informs us the Christian church owned its own brothels and supported a legal system of prostitution until the Reformation of the 16th century. A visit to the not-seedy Wild Horse Resort & Spa outside Reno, Nev., demonstrates that legitimizing the trade almost certainly makes life a lot easier on everybody, especially the girls. Legalization dramatically reduces or eliminates violence, rape, exploitation, and even human rights violations. Disease too; monthly physicals at the ranch have never turned up a single case of HIV, at least according to the doc overseeing the check-ups. This episode is unusually fun for two reasons: a) loads of female nudity and b) Penn repeatedly making hilarious sport of the episode’s director.

“The Boy Scouts” episode looks at how the organization – when it isn’t teaching knot-tying or tent-pitching – has been discriminating against atheists and homosexuals since the early 1980s, allegedly due to the latent influence of the Mormon church. When a producer posing as an preteen asks if his status as an atheist would prohibit him from joining the scouting ranks, a BSA rep wrote back with this:

“The Boy Scouts maintains that no member can grow into the best kind of citizen without recognizing an obligation to God.”

Man! I, a former Scout myself, am now a substandard citizen because I harbor doubts about the existence of a supreme being? The rep couldn’t have written “God or gods” out of a little love for Titus Pullo or those stressed-out polytheists over on the Galactica?? It turns out the BSA’s new policies may be particularly unsavory because the organization has long been supported by taxpayer dollars. (Happily, we’re told the Girl Scouts eschew such discriminatory practices.)

$22.49 gets you ten season-four half-hour chunks of “Bullshit,” which also tackle Ground Zero, the death penalty, cryptozoology, pet love, manners, numbers and abstinence. It is much recommended.

    by slder78

they had an ep about second hand smoke not being dangerous. Which pissed me off to no end. I had a loved one who never smoked a day in his life with no family history of cancer ever who died of lung cancer and all we could trace it to was that he worked in an office for over a decade where they allowed smoking until it was finally banned. I lost all respect for those two and I call Bullshit on them and their show.

And what's with the indignation about the Boy Scouts? That like saying, "In order to be a Christian I have to believe in Christ? Screw that!" So the scouts want to be like the Klan, least their not hiding under a white hood.

You can get lung cancer from things other than cigarette smoke. Your uncle could have lived his whole life in a bubble and still gotten lung cancer. Also, the problem with the Scouts isn't that they are discriminatory, it's that they get government (or, if you prefer, our) money.

To be fair to Penn Jillette, he's subsequently admitted he made a mistake with the second hand smoke episode. It happens, and at least he's had the balls to own up to it. It would be a shame to miss out on such a good show because of one bad experience.

Jason of Star Command was cheesy goodness!

    by tylermo

I concur. No write up for Jason of Star Command? Admittedly, it was pretty bad. Probably not when I was 7 or 8 years old, but... I just bought Space Academy recently, and still need Ark II, the animated Flash Gordon, and a few others. Don't let these cheesy classics go out of print before you buy them. It'll be murder on ebay for those shows, even though a few people want them. Back to Jason, Academy, etc. The special effects were surprisingly good(the ship effects in particular). As far as the acting, stories, etc., they're pretty bad. The old Battlestar was probably top of the heap for sci-fi in the late 70's, Buck Rogers would still get an emmy compared to these Sat morning shows, Galactica 1980(better special effects, and maybe acting), but still pretty bad. That said, if you love these old shows like I do, just go out and buy them. Let this company know we want more.

    by tylermo

All three of those would be great to have. I bought the 67-70 Spidey set, and it was cheesy greatness. Wish they would release the 60's-70's FF, among other marvel classics. And, where's Thundarr the Barbarian? ("Lords of light!" and "Demon Dogs!") Of course, the list of unavailable shows is endless. hehe

    by sledge hammer

Yeah there was only six eps aired in season 2, I don't know if they made more than that which never saw the light of day though. Regardless, you're right Big Jim, the fact that they didn't include these episodes along with the 18 from season one into a 'complete series' set is stupidly perplexing, especially as the powers that be likely don't see much (marketing) point in releasing a dvd set of just six or so episodes. And the fans that spent their hard earned get screwed yet again...

    More filmation talk

    by tylermo

Ark II vehicle used in Damnation Alley? Can't remember for sure. But, that old vehicle was pretty decent for Filmation. James Doohan was in Jason. As for the monkey, that was Ark II. Although, he made one appearance in Space Academy(having just read the dvd notes). I'm no expert on these, since I was so young at the time they were out. It's true that Isis and Shazam were probably the best ones. Let's not completely shat all over everything F-mation did. The Star Trek animated series(with a few exceptions) was pretty decent for its time. And, the Flash Gordon animated wasn't too bad, except for the cutesy dragon sidekick. uughh. It's a tough call regarding Filmation vs. Sid and Marty Kroft, but I have to say Sid and Marty's shows were lower on the rung. Let's face it, Filmation even had Fat Albert. Even when it comes to live action vs. live action...Sid and Marty come out on the bottom.

    Gay does not = pedo

    by itchywolf

slder78, you are a moron. Just because someone is gay does not mean they are any more likely to be a pedophile then a straight person. A fact they pointed out in that episode of bullshit. You stop watching a show just because YOU thought that they got ONE thing wrong? Wow, how's it feel to be such a huge bigot, asshole? At least Penn has the ability to admit when he might be wrong, where you just decide to say that gays in the boy scouts would be pedo's to make up for your previous stupidity. Thanks tho, try harder next time, or keep your bigotry to yourself instead. I also laugh at your inability to watch something just because you don't have showtime. I don't have showtime and I watch bullshit! all the time, for free. Gotta love the internet, and having a clue doesn't hurt either. GOOGLE MOTHER F*CKER, DO YOU USE IT? Glath can get you started. That's all I'm gonna say, and that's way more then you deserve.

Damn itchywolf, tell us how you really feel. Having a look at slder78's posts, I don't see any reference to gay at all. So unless he changed it after his initial post, you seem to be the one making the gay=pedo connection.

P&T's Bullshit is one of the best things on TV and certainly the best thing on Showtime since 'Dead like me' went away. I thought they were a little off base with second hand smoke, but it is not the incredible danger that the anti-smoking zealots would have you believe. The science backs up that it is bad, not *BAD*.
