Whither Pullo & Vorenus?? Learn How HBO Ends ROME!!
SPOILER ALERT !!
I am – Hercules!!
Octavian and Antony, with all the hugging! Can this new alliance last?
March 25 brings the final episode of “Rome” ever, and HBO was good enough to forward details of that episode and the three preceding. (I note that Mere Smith, who spent a lot of time over at “Angel,” authors the penultimate installment.) All is cloaked in invisotext for those who wish not the spoilage.

Servilia's (Lindsay Duncan) incessant cries for justice drive Atia (Polly Walker) to distraction, and result in an unfortunate public denouement. Meanwhile, Octavian (Simon Woods), Mark Antony (James Purefoy) and Lepidus (Ronan Vibert) agree to divvy up Rome's territories, sharing a common treasury. The coalition is immediately tested when Mark Antony fails to report a substantial bribe. At the Collegium, Eirene (Chiara Mastalli) insists that Pullo (Ray Stevenson) punish Gaia (Zuleikha Robinson) for insubordination, but the slave turns the flogging to her advantage. Levi (Nigel Lindsay) urges a reluctant Timon (Lee Boardman) to help him kill Herod (Rene Zagger), who has arrived from Judea with a secret agenda. While the newly freed Posca (Nick Woodeson) takes a bride, Octavian turns a more public wedding into a political statement of unity.
Written by Scott Black; directed by John Maybury.
Episode #20: "A Necessary Fiction"

HBO2 playdates: March 11 (1:00 a.m.), 13 (10:00 p.m.) and 20 (9:00 p.m.)
Octavian proclaims a new era of virtue in Rome, issuing a stern mandate that proves impossible for his family and subordinates to obey. A shipment of gold is mysteriously hijacked while en route to the Roman treasury, casting suspicion everywhere and sending Vorenus (Kevin McKidd) on a mission to learn who betrayed whom. In the wake of personal tragedy, Pullo focuses his grief and fury on Memmio (Daniel Cerqueira), Omnipor (Rocky Marshali) and their henchmen. After courting an "appropriate" bride named Livia (Alice Henley), Octavian turns his attentions to more important matters, issuing an ultimatum that he knows Mark Antony can't refuse.
Written by Todd Ellis Kessler; directed by Carl Franklin.
Episode #21: "Deus Impeditio Esuritori Nullus (No God Can Stop a Hungry Man)"
Debut date: SUNDAY, MARCH 18 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
Other HBO playdates: March 19 (9:00 p.m.), 21 (11:00 p.m.), 22 (2:00 a.m.), 23 (10:00 p.m.), 24 (midnight) and 25 (8:00 p.m.)
HBO2 playdates: March 18 (1:00 a.m.), 20 (10:00 p.m.) and 27 (9:00 p.m.)
Rome is facing a dire shortage of grain, forcing Octavian to barter with Mark Antony to get new shipments from Egypt. But instead of agreeing to Octavian's price - money and territory - Mark Antony flatly turns him down, pointing towards an inevitable conflict between the two former allies and, perhaps, Vorenus and Pullo. As a last resort, Octavian sends Atia and Octavia to Alexandria, knowing their reception will most likely be a chilly one. At the Collegium, where Pullo is rationing out grain to increasingly restless Romans, Gaia saves her master from a caged animal's wrath, but can't save herself. After fleeing a deteriorating situation in Egypt, Posca gives Octavian the ammunition he needs to turn the people against Mark Antony, setting in motion the wheels of war.
Written by Mere Smith; directed by Steve Shill.
Episode #22: "De Patre Vostro (About Your Father)" (season finale)
Debut date: SUNDAY, MARCH 25 (9:00-10:00 p.m.)
Other HBO playdates: March 26 (8:45 p.m.), 28 (11:00 p.m.), 29 (2:05 a.m.), 30 (9:45 p.m.) and 31 (9:45 p.m.)
HBO2 playdates: March 25 (1:00 a.m.) and 27 (10:00 p.m.)
In the aftermath of the battle of Actium, Mark Antony returns to Alexandria, settling into a world of numbing debauchery with Cleopatra (Lyndsey Marshal). Meanwhile, Octavian turns to Pullo to try to convince Vorenus to give up Cleopatra's palace in lieu of a fiery siege. Vorenus refuses, but Cleopatra seems all-too-willing to dupe Mark Antony in order save her life, if not her honor. With Octavian's army at the palace steps, Vorenus flees with Caesarian, Cleopatra's imperious son and Caesar's supposed heir. As Vorenus exits the city with the boy, Pullo is ordered by Octavian to track them down. Their journeys lead Vorenus and Pullo back to Rome for an emotional reunion at the Collegium - just as Octavian's triumph is being held amidst bittersweet pomp and circumstance.
Written by Bruno Heller; directed by John Maybury.
9 p.m. Sunday. HBO.

Oh, and first.
-
Regular TV sucks. Gonna have to wait for Rome to get on DVD.
-
Come on.
-
OK, so I've just caught up with the first five, and WTF? They replaced Pirkis! I might have been able to get past that, but this new guy couldn't be more wooden if they'd carved him from a Giant Sequoia. This could rank of one of the worst decisions the show has ever made. For shame.
Oh, and THIRTEEN. -
For fuck's sake, the two seasons of this show will have covered about 20 years worth of events, yet the domestic stuff will have progressed as if its been not even a fourth of that. And only character - Octavian - will have shown hardly any signs of aging. Milch's idea of having a show about Roman beat cops (which eventually became Deadwood) would have been a far better show. There are some fun things about this show, but all in all it will likely be considered a disappointment, especially when matched up with the Big Three (The Wire, The Sopranos, Deadwood).

...oh my goodness, no. Look, I have a lot of fun watching Rome. Loved the first kid who played Octavian, love James Purefoy as Antony. I've always thought of it as the bastard child of I Claudius and Caligula, torn between its parents. And yeah, seeing Vorenus' kids age...hmmm...not at all while the show zooms from Caesar crossing the Rubicon to the end of the second triumvirate is endearing maybe, but only in that "the monkey thinks he's a person" sort of way. But in terms of real quality it doesn't approach The Wire by ten miles, Deadwood by eight or The Sopranos, even including the last couple years, by five. Bet it's better than either the surfing detective or the sexy vampires show are going to be, though.
-
I wonder how they will portray Livia?
-
why bother with the invisotext? anyone whose read shakespeare (or a history text) knows how that one ends.
-
...take note BSG, Deadwood, Lost, the writers have actually KNOWN how this story ends from the beginning. No filler in this one ;o)
I'll miss this too, and will be looking forward to another awesome HBO boxset.
If they end up filming another season they couldn't use the Pullo and Vorenus characters again, unless they do a Blackadder and Baldrick on us. God Forbid.
-
I know its expensive to make, but has it been a flop this season? Is HBO just cutting and running? Any knowledge would be appriciated. Oh and, THIRTEEN!!!!!
-
...I do enjoy this show. However, damn the gods for I do not have HBO. I must honor season two via DVD.I'm glad to see the show get some AICN lovin'.THIRTEEN!!!
-
Good to see you. I believe the decision to end "ROME" came as early as the ANNOUNCEMENT of the second season. Strangely enough, no one really knows why. One could speculate that it has to do with the rather large ratings drop between seasons (why does this happen to the best shows?). Yet, due to the rather early announcement of the show's final season, it's the massive production costs (and the tight-ass BBC) that appear to be the most likely culprit. It's a shame.
-
with all kinds of debauchary and doublecrossing and dueling. C'mon, Caligula is PERFECT for a season three or four on a network that pushes the limits like HBO
-
Hows the temp in the east half of the state? Colder than Moriarty's soul in this section of Missouri
-
Actually, DC/NoVA here. We've been freezing our asses off. But the temps look like they'll get a little milder later this week.
-
easy to mix them up since there are probably like half a million copies on the resurection ship Knowles 1 (a "heavy" cruiser no doubt. Prez Baltar/Darth Sidious is the St Louis poster I mistook you for (i think) ...damn Baltars, can't keep em straight...
-
We seem to share similar taste in shows lol. The BBC is always cheap as it is the license payers money they are spending. Still a shame as there are so many good stories they could tell. This baby could have run and run. Maybe the DVD sales might make them re-visit Rome later for a series of one-offs.
-
Between Weeds, Dexter, and my favorite lesbian soap opera (just tell Bette that you still love her, Tina!) Showtime is winning me over when faced with a future of HBO sans Deadwood, Rome, and Extras.
-
the wire and sopranos are also both ending this year right? hbo better get some shit in production.
on the other hand showtime shows are yet to win me over. weeds is funny, but just not for me.
Dexter started off well, but seemed to drag a bit. i was surprised how they stretched out a 280 page novel for a 12 hour season. I just finished the second novel and have no clue how they are gonna pull that shit off. -
to getting that optioned "Song of Ice and Fire" series going. George RR Martin is the bomb.
-
Greatest show ever!
-
George RR Martin IS the bomb. Here's hoping he can end the series in a more satisfying way than Stephen King's Dark Tower.
-
If Rome has proven one thing, it's that they can do the swords/sandals epic stories with real pinache and grit, and that lends further weight to the optioning of ASOIAF. It's amazing that GRRM himself said over a year ago that - due to Rome - HBO was the only network he could ever envisage doing his books justice. Now let's hope that they make some inspired casting and do not shy away from the awesome scope of the novels, this could be the most complex and brilliant television show ever made if done right. Anyway, as for Rome's second season, for whatever reason it was cancelled, it sort of foretold doom for this season. There have been a few false starts in my opinion. You had the wrap-up of Caesar's death and fallout between Antony and Octavian, only for there to be a weird time jump to show a battle and resolution between them, only for there to be another time jump without taking care of such events as the war between Brutus and Antony/Octavian? Too much for one season, they shouldn't have started immediately after Caesar's death if they wanted to cover a lot of ground.
-
Is coming back for a fifth and final season.
-
Rome is ending because of the huge budget

Cicero and Pullo = 2nd best scene in the series to date
by fluffyunbound
I wondered how they would handle this, and they did a fucking great job. "Your name will live forever." "My name? Meh. I thought you meant ME."
-
"THIRTEEN!"
-
Vivian Thomas and put on Cinamax.
Until then I am just not interested in a series about lesbians.
Go ahead, give him the scripts and tell him he can change no more than 25% of it. It will improve the show immeasurably. -
There were two seperate battles going on at Phillipi and Brutus and Cassius commited suicide. I wish they'd at least stick to the easy stuff.
-
Wow, this show is awesome. I couldn't believe the FX tonite. Great scenes. I love the characters and actors. It's so interesting. It'll sure be sad when it's over. Milius has to write more stuff for TV.
-
Two things came to mind on tonight's episode--first, the spx budget is definitely up from season 1 episode 1. Back then, the very first battle scene had the camera stuck tight on a half dozen sword yielding soldiers; tonight through the miracle of cgi we saw thousands; very LOTR-like. Second, we lost another great character--David Bamber's Cicero. In a show where they're dropping like flies, it's the greatest acting loss since Ciarán Hinds' Julius Caesar. But hey, can't stop historical fact.
-
Holy crap, what will I watch before Battle Star Galactica.
-
i wanna enjoy the show... and 206 was the best yet. i was just thinking with it being nearly half over the season was not looking great. one of my biggest gripes was the glossing over of the battles in season 1, so it was a real treat to see one here. this was Brutus' finest moment in the entire series, and it was fitting seeing him go down like Caesar! very tragic. Cicero died for nothing since his dispatch did not make it to Brutus, in a excellent scene. Pullo and Vorenus were both in top form. Pullos wife was sweet with some great scenes. i still dont get what they are doing with Timon... it just seems a waste. Octavia and Agrippa... dunno. i think Agrippa is a miscast... he does not carry the role well at all. i would think someone in his role would be somewhat more commanding... and less "omg love! what do i do?"
-
Classy end to Cicero and Brutus. Long live the Rupublic!! As for classic scenes, how about when Octavion tells Marc-Anthony and Atia that he has borrowed 3 mil cistersii(sp) and Marc-Anthony gives the slap down. Great acting all round there!
-
But man that scene with Pullo executing Ciccero (no clue how to spell his name, forgive me) was amazing
-
I assume fire and barbarians would be involved.
-
This season of Rome has been much better than the first.
But whats the point in investing in these shows if theyre just gonna cancel them. Ill never forgive them for cancelling Deadwood.
Id cancel HBO but need it for Boxing
