Rowan Atkinson as

Published at:  Mar 03, 1999 2:42:32 PM CST

Glen here...

..trying to bring some clarity to the recent torrent of "Rowan Atkinson is the new Doctor Who!"
rumors. This information was released yesterday - but some people seem to be jumping to the
wrong conclusion about Rowan Atkinson having been cast as Doctor Who.

To make a long story short, and contrary to numerous assertions and misunderstandings, Rowan
Atkinson (Blackadder, Mr. Bean ) HAS NOT been cast as the title character in a
new series / film permutation of the Doctor Who franchise.

Instead, Atkinson will appear as The Doctor opposite Julia Sawalha (Absolutely
Fabulous
) as his assistant, and Jonathan Pryce (Brazil, Something Wicked This
Way Comes
, Tomorrow Never Dies) as The Master in a three-part storyline to be
featured on an upcoming U.K Comic Relief special (no relation to the American version).

This three part story - which may find The Doctor fending off Daleks (and possibly joined by
other Doctors) - will air as part of U.K.'s Red Nose Day Comic Relief on March 12. The airing
times for the individual segments seems to be around 8pm, 8:30pm, and 9:35pm.

These times are
approximate (and variable) due to working around the fund-raising "charity" telethon of which this
Doctor Who adventure is part.

More information regarding U.K.'s Comic Relief can be found at HREF="http://www.rednoseday.beeb.com">www.rednoseday.beeb.com, or HREF="http://www.comicrelief.org.uk">www.comicrelief.org.uk.

SPECIAL THANKS to Corey Klemow for his informative post on the Doctor Who
newsgroup, the numerous Coaxial readers who took the time to forward me various bits of
information about this project, and to Lee Whiteside for distilling the info into a concise and
well-researched form - and sending it on for my consideration.

    could be quite watchable....?

    by orac_uk

The Radio Times has a promotional shot of Rowan in full costume (looking very similar to McGann!) infront of a Dalek, and I have to admit...it looks pretty good!
It's a very stylish photo suprisingly enough. Anyway, it will be fun to see the surviving Dr's and the Daleks on British TV again!

    Jesus, Lane

Lane, the whole point of this article is that Rowan has NOT, I repeat, NOT been cast as Dr. Who. What, are you in such a hurry to rant that you don't even bother to read the posts anymore?

I want another serious Doctor (well, not *that* serious-- the lighter elements of the show were always fun)... so I'm glad this is "merely" a rumor. That way LaneMyers won't have to get a life for just a little while longer...

    *sigh* Lane

    by swcrusader

I do believe you're an american Lane, and one who pretty much personifies the bad traits of said country. Dr Who is a cultural phenomenon, and not having grown up with it in a commonwealth country like I did, then you have no cultural context within to place. I've been reading your posts over the last few weeks, and noticed a singular lack of intelligent comment in them all. This post annoyed me because I love Dr Who and miss it dearly. It embodied everything you could do with a sci-fi series, in a way americans could never do. It's VERY british. The main character has no romantic trysts, never uses a gun (there are a few exceptions) and has a whimsical sense of humor. And may I remind you that Star Trek, considered the top sci-fi program ever made in the USA ran for just a few scant seasons - even ST:TNG only ran for 7 seasons. Dr Who ran continuously for 25 years. Yes it was humorous, but also serious, disturbing and it had a message. Thankfully I don't know you in person lane, but I hazard a guess that your half-formed opinions are held with the fanaticism of someone who has nothing else in life to hold on to.

    Uh...

I'm an American. And I love Dr. Who, for essentially the reasons you suggested.

Bad taste ain't a universal American affliction...nor is it one solely confined to the U S of A.

Although, I've got to agree with some of what Lane said, though not with the spirit of his remarks...Doctor Who *is* a comedy, or more accurately, a humorous drama. At least, it is when it's at its best...when it manages to use its humor to lower your guard just before it hits you between the eyes with something downright amazing.

    :-) No offence intended!

    by swcrusader

There was no offence intended to the americans who DO like Dr Who, and actually none to people who don't like it - just to those who say it's stupid. Dr Who is part of a great pantheon of Science Fiction series from the UK that I love and miss, "Blakes 7", "The Tomorrow People" and others included. Like most British sci-fi it suffered from a lack of funding..... But for americans who can look beyond hilarious SFX and love the show I say good on you!
