It's "Amok Time" For STAR TREK Remastered This Weekend, And This Is What It Looks Like!!
Merrick here...
...with two images from this weekend's STAR TREK remastered. The episode is "Amok Time" - it's the one in which an oversexed Spock gets horny and beats up his friends. When I was a kid, I didn't really get it. Now...I do.
Both of these are establishing shots from Vulcan (Spock's homeworld). Traditionally, we show an "original -vs-remastered" shot comparison. Interestingly, there really aren't any accurate comparisons for the new, reamstered pictures - all establishing shots in the original episode were confined to the immediate arena in which Spock is forced to take on Kirk in a hormonally charged, politically motivated smackdown.
The original establishing shots looked something like this:

The remastering significantly broadens the scope of this sequence. Here's a shot from "Amok Time" showing Kirk, Spock, and McCoy crossing a land bridge to get to the arena:

And, here's an aerial view of the arena itself. No longer a strange outcropping in the middle of nowhere, it's perched precariously on a mountain top. A city can now be seen in the distance: it's Shi'Khar (where Spock grew up). We first saw this in the STAR TREK ANIMATED SERIES episode "Yesteryear" back in 1973.

Notice how the aesthetic now evokes the general vibe set for Vulcan in STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK?
TREK III

Apparently, some consideration was actually given to adjusting the image tint/background "sky" in this episode. It's blood read in the original series, but was presented as copper/golden in THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK and subsequent TREK series.
Alas, the sheer amount of effects required to do this proved prohibitive: too many angles featured the sky (an on-set backdrop when the episode was filmed), and conforming its appearance would have required more FX manipulation than we see in many feature films.
In the end, the team's decision not to pursue this stays truer to the original episode...a compromise I can certainly live with.

1st?
-
A crowd has gathered, Vulcan and Human.
-
I haven't been impressed with it so far, but this re-do looks outstanding.
-
The fact that they did consider the impact of what some updates would do to the episode is cool.
-
I live in LA, checking all the listings, nada. G4 and SciFi are showing zip.
-
find it on the TV.....
-
but they've been mysteriously pulled! I was going to buy and download that awesome "Doomsday Machine," but oh well. guess I'll have to wait for the DVDs.
-
I love that score they play when Kirk and Spock are going at it!
-
It also showed that Spock could kick Kirk's a$$ anytime he wanted to.
-
These episodes are getting better every week.
-
These are only being shown by local affiliates that own the rights to the shows. They will not be shown on stations like G4 or SciFi. Cincinnati airs they early Sunday morning (1:35 AM)

Do you think they will edit out the scene with Nimoy lounging in the background when he should be deep in the plak tow? Fuck you, Strabo.
-
One of the few things Voyager did right was make Tuvok a black Vulcan. It would be nice while remastering these eps to do the same and colorize some of the extras to reflect a Vulcan society as diverse as ours. This is a good start, but Star Trek's biggest appeal was not the effects, but the social agenda it helped advance. Remastering these eps to reflect a more diverse background would be true to Roddenberry's vision. That being said, there are probably union issues that make this impossible.
-
In L.A. they're showing on NBC at midnight on Sundays in standard and high def.
-
Whether Comcast, DirecTV. Whatever, they all have a search feature. Type Star. First four letters will do and it'll find wherever Star Trek is airing. It's not that hard people.
-
They just keep getting better and better.
-
http://www.you tube.com/watch?v=3uxTpyCdriY This is really funny!
-
Let's revise old movies and TV shows and make them more PC, that's a super idea. Roddenberry was alive back then you know. If that was his vision, then there would be Vulcan brothers in the episode.
-
Has there been a definitive statement about a future DVD or HDDVD set? I haven't been able to catch most of these remastered episodes but the pictures posted on AICN look amazing.
-
Good God! Are we now at the point where we are going to PC everything to death? I admit that minorities were often overlooked in television and movies in the 60s, but how does adding black Vulcans into "Amok Time" make the show 'better'? Also, would you be saying the same thing about caucasians if Star Trek had a predominantely black cast originally? No offense, but I seriously doubt it. And what about hispanics? Or asians? We STILL haven't seen asian Vulcans. Why do you ignore this under-represented group in your complaint?
-
I forget, besides this and Dad, are there any other ToS eps with Vulcans?
-
I bet you didn't complain when they put Black Vulcan in the Superfriends. Zing!
-
In the sense that a new generation watching the show for the first time can see their race represented. Especially a race known for thinking logically, it seems to suggest that only white complexions have the ability to do so. It doesn't hurt the show, and actually improves it for young minds.
-
... appear in HD? Wish I could see them. (The lame-ass FOX station where I live broadcasts FOX network shows in HD, but not local or syndicated shows.)
-
...wasn't there an Asian Vulcan chick in Search for Spock? No? I KNOW I saw an Asian Vulcan woman in some Trek iteration or another. (And yes, the only reason I can remember even this much about it was because she was hot!)
-
As Spock and Kirk.
-
Kristi Ally who played the femal vulcun in Star Trek 3 does look oddly asian for a Kansasan (not that Kansas doesn't have it's share of asians, I'm just saying)...that may be who you are thinking of
-
guy banging a gong(?) (how stereotypical) in the movie I think.
-
In Star Trek 5, on that Planet of Galactic Peace. It was definately the worst of any Star Trek ever made.
-
Apparently, XBOX live scored an exclusive deal to provide downloadable Star Trek episodes, which is why the eps from all the series disappeared from iTunes. Hopefully that is just a short term thing.
-
You mean y'all missed the gold-shirted brutha who beamed over with Kirk and Scotty to the USS Constellation last week in "DOOMSDAY MACHINE"? Sure, he had zero lines, but still...
-
all of them?
-
Really looking forward to seeing these – EVENTUALLY. When are they coming to DVD, Blue Ray or HD/DVD???
-
these new shots lack personality. With that angle of Spock, Bones and Kirk walking they shoulda rotoscoped them into a new background at least instead of dropping them all together for that long, long, long shot.
-
As FSJTmac noted, she was actually in STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER and was Romulan, not Vulcan. Here's a picture I found on the web, so you can see if this is who you're thinking of.And by the way, you're not alone in remembering her as the "Hot Vulcan." Back when the movie first premiered and she came onscreen, I felt all warm myself and thought "Oh there's NO WAY Kirk is not getting a piece of THAT before this movie ends!"http://tinyurl.com/2egl8b
-
they said they were just going to clean it up a little... this looks like entirely new shots are being inserted... I've liked most of the episodes so far, but this looks like they're taking too many liberties...

Not to be Politically Incorrect, but re: Black Vulcans
by triumph poops!
Not to seem politically incorrect, but to toss out a concept for debate that maybe a long time, die-hard TREK fan can answer, did Roddenberry -- that is, AS he was originally making TOS in the Sixties and at a time when he WAS clearly in control of the show -- actually see the Vulcans as being that diverse racially? Now before someone points to Tim Russ on VOYAGER, keep in mind Tuvok was a non-Roddenberry character created post-Roddenberry death. So stating the obvious, he had NO say over the introduction of Tuvok into the mix.The reason I bring this up -- well, besides the fact that Winky Man started this topic with his post -- is the original show itself. When you look at TOS, Roddenberry clearly WAS in control of things (ie. who would be cast) and it isn't as if Roddenberry wasn't socially conscious. Hell, that was one of the underlying (and at times heavy-handed) themes to the entire show. And let's face it -- regarding this notion of political correctness of casting Blacks on the show -- he DID put Nicelle Nicholas front and center on the friggin' bridge as a core character, a TV first... and in THE ULTIMATE COMPUTER, the episode where a super computer plugged into the ship goes totally screwy, guest star William Marshall who played Dr. Daystrom was Black... and in THE GALILEO SEVEN, where the Shuttlecraft gets stuck on a planet, Don Marshall -- yes, Black -- played Lt. Boma, the guy who keeps getting in Spock's face. And in other episodes you clearly see Black actors strolling through the hallways as crew.My point is, it isn't like Roddenberry was blind to the idea of casting Black actors as they were making the show. He was DOING IT.So what I'm wondering here -- and I'm just tossing this out on the heels of KidZ asking about the "Hot Asian Vulcan" -- maybe that's why episodes like AMOK TIME were originally cast as they were. Perhaps Roddenberry saw the Vulcans/Romulans as being more representative of an Asiatic race, ethnically speaking...which I have to say when I was a kid growing up and first watching the show (not to be politically incorrect again) is exactly what I thought the Vulcans/Romulans were supposed to be symbolic of.Then again, in a post-Original Series but pre-Tuvok timeframe, I'm totally blanking on NEXT GEN, which Roddenberry was clearly alive for. I can't remember if he introduced any Black Vulcans then who preceeded Tuvok, which might make this whole argument moot. So like I said, maybe a diehard TREK fan fluent in TREK history can settle the whole ethnicity question and what Roddenberry REALLY envisioned the Vulcans to be...
-
I don't think anyone can seriously argue that Roddenberry wasn't for racial equality. What I think many fans don't realize is that he had a HUGE fight on his hands with the studio powers that be regarding Uhura. More than likely, he didn't risk rocking the boat as far as 'extras' went so that he could have better footing when it came to fighting for his principle cast.
-
The first "black" Vulcan appeared on screen in Star Trek V (the birthing scene), not Voyager.
It's been close to 2 decades now. This is the most fucked up and ridiculous of "debates."
It's a done deal. So let it go, for god's sake. -
He liked the sistas'.
-
When I first caught a glimpse of Tuvok I also wondered if I had ever seen any black Vulcans. Nope. But as the series went on, I found that it didn't matter much. I thought Tuvok was an underused character that got to shine in one episode where something happened and the actor playing him was able to emote a lot more. Great episode of Voyager in my opinion. Sadly, the rest of the series wasn't up to par but then again, I was never much into Trek. I'd rather be a Jedi kicking Sith ass with my lightsaber than a doomed red-shirt ensign in Starfleet.
-
Generally speaking I'd second your notion, Doc Strange. Overall I'd rather be out and about swinging a lightsaber......Well, unless you get to be Kirk. Because let's face it, Kirk IS the best thing about TREK and a total bad ass. You'd have your own ship and could go where you want, you're Captain and top dog so everyone's at your beck and call, you're in prime shape and never lose a fight, and best of all it's a scientific fact that you will absolutely, positively, no questions asked score with any woman you meet in the galaxy. So I agree, I'd rather be a Jedi than an ordinary red shirt...but being Kirk would be pretty fucking awesome too!
-
what will be the reaction when they eventually start messing around with the background of other classics, like T J Hooker or BJ and the Bear?
-
Also you are correct about Roddenberry pushing for racial equality. With Uhura, Sulu, Geordi La Forge, Worf and others (I mean at the height of the Cold War he has the nerve to cast the Russian Chekov), GR laid out a vision of what the human race should be.
-
Good report, nice photos, looking forward to seeing the episodes if & when they're shown here in the UK. But is there actually such a word as "enbiggen" ? Isn't it properly "enlarge" ?
-
Enbiggen is a perfectly comulent word. After all, it is in the motto of Springfield is "A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man."
-
the on jm carrey sang in Cable Guy
-
WHEN DOES IT COME ON AND ON WHAT CHANNEL?
-
It's syndicated, so when it comes on and what channel depends on your market.
-
It is a well documented fact that both NBC and Desilu encouraged racial diversity in their shows in the 1960s. In Desilu VP Herb Solow and Robert Justman's book they even reprint a letter sent to Roddenberry from the president of NBC encouraging him to cast more African American actors. The myth that NBC and Desilu didn't like Uhura or any of the other minorities cast in Star Trek grew from stories that Roddenberry told on the convention circuit in the 70's. Back then he blamed the network and the studio for everything from ring arround the collar to original sin; and he always built himself up to be shining white (no pun intended) knight of Star Trek. Back then, as it is today, producers/exec producers have the final say when it comes to casting.
-
The original series was responsible for the very first interracial kiss ever shown on television, between Uhura and Kirk in the episode, "Plato's Stepchildren."
-
"Here" being St. George, Ut. He was headed up north to give a speech.
-
I once replaced the Battlegrounds music from World of Warcraft with the Spock/Kirk duel music.
-
battle theme music to my ears. Classic stuff.
-
the idea of "colorizing" old Star Trek episodes to be more "politically correct" is simply asinine and quite frankly, RACIST. Quit trying to whitewash history and leave old TV shows alone! You PC morons have ALREADY destroyed the old Tom and Jerry and Warner Brother cartoons and half the college mascots in the country with your self-righteous stupidity! I swear... political correctness will destroy our society faster than any terrorist ever could!
-
Originally, after Kirk "dies", Spock porks his lifeless body as a further show of superiority. This was deemed too controversial for the time, but I hear it's back now.
-
so THATS what it was based on..
-
...he ain't appearing in no star trek again till they CGI those saddlebags out from under his peepers. And he's given a CGI booty like Kirks. Kisses!!
-
Frances Nuyen as ELAAN OF TROYIUS ...very exotic and sexy.
-
Well my local channel 49 ( 13 on cable ) decided to switch CSI with Star Trek again for just this week so I recorded the wrong show and didn't get to see it! God this channel's programing manager must be brain dead!
-
Hi Does anyone know when / If the remastered versions will get shown in the UK if so when and where ??
-
It's as simple as that.
-
Seriously, man. Vulcans are not black or white, they are green. All Vulcans were green until the makeup artists on TOS got lazy, and then subsequent series forgot about it entirely.
-
The episode shown in Cincinnati had some editing done in order to get more ad time. Is this being done in all markets or is it up to the individual station?
-
Am I the only one that loved Alan Dean Foster's take on Trek?
-
So far everything has been tastefully done. I was worried they'd f*$k it up ala the "Star Wars" DVDs. The "Doomsday Machine" was especially good.
-
Why do I imagine Banky standing up and asking "What's a Nubian?"
Seriously though leave it to Microsoft and their fucking XBox live to mess up a good thing and keep iTunes customers from getting their $2 remastered Trek episodes.
