Cameron Crowe's Film is given the green light
Here's where Cameron Crowe's latest seems to be. We'll probably be hearing more in the trades soon.
The light is green! All staffers were back at work on February 22nd as was
hoped for. The script is trimmed slightly for length, but is no less great
than previous. Acting deals are still in the works. Shooting begins April
26th.

...let's change the subject! What are the most anticipated films of 99, because this looks to be like a very memorable year. Episode I, d'uh. Eyes Wide Shut, a film that would be high above all the rest in any other year. Austin Powers 2. Magnolia. The Blair Witch Project. Matrix. End of Days, although that could easily be stupid. The World is Not Enough, because I read on Cinescape that the newest Bond is going to lose the machine gun and get back the PPK!(this is a very good thing!) Are there any others? Flame me all you want for the ones I forgot, because I'm trying to get a list together of all the really big movies (big in quality, not budget and marketing) that are coming out this year, and I would also like Harry to create a section of this site for reader feedback on some of these films. You have to admit, we are all going to have a lot of shit to say after all these movies, like the new Lucas and Kubrick films, come out!

Sorry to be totally irrelevant, but I hate it when Harry throws good talkbacks into Last Week's Cool News just so we can get non-news like this. I guess this is news, but it doesnt really inspire discussion. I thought the talkback on Jan DeBont was getting good, but now that its in Last Week's Cool News, nobody adds to it anymore. Tsk tsk... and I put all that effort into explaining why DeBont is a hack.

Does anyone know if the part of the high school kid in this movie has been cast yet? If nobody has yet, does anyone know where the auditions are?

looking forward to the ones L'auteur mentioned, and a few others
by spike lee
L'auteur picked some films of 99, that are worthy of discussion, and this does look like a good year starting Memorial Day. I'm looking forward to Spike Lee's Summer of Sam, of course. And Harmony Korine's Julian, I don't know much about this film, but his novel and Gummo were so original. Yes, I enjoyed Gummo. The Andy Kaufman bio pick will be as interesting as he was, lets hope anyway.

...it batman, L'Auter and LaneMyers agreeing on something...I guess that means the end of the world is around the corner. Can't add any more to the upcoming movies in '99 that hasn't already been mentioned except the new Croenberg movie whose name I can't remember right now.
-
Existenz is the name of the new Cronenberg movie. Anyway you guys forgot The Matrix, The Mummy, Entrapment, Mystery Men, Random Hearts, The Haunting of Hill House, The Green Mile, Mission: Impossible 2 and the most important movie of all and the best of film of 1999 - SILENCE - DOGMA !!!!!
-
Sorry, Matrix was already on the list. Here's my prediction of the best films of 1999. (remember, this could change anytime)
01. Dogma
02. Eyes Wide Shut
03. Episode 1
04. The Talented Mr. Ripley
05. The Green Mile
06. Magnolia
07. Austin Powers 2
08. The Haunting of House Hill
09. The Matrix
10. Existenz

The films that I myself am most looking foward to have to be Dogma, Episode 1, Talented Mr. Ripley (though I do wonder what role cate Blanchett could possibly be playing), Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Summer of Sam, Mystery Men, and Ghost Dog (which is the new film by Jim Jarmusch), but the one I am most looking foward to at the moment is Fight Club. If this film reaches its potenial it could be the next Clockwork Orange. If you don't believe me read the book, but don't read the summary on the back of it, the publishers were idiots and wrote the major plot twist there.

Also looking forward to JOE GOULD'S SECRET, BRINGING OUT THE DEAD (didn't like Schrader's script, but, then again, it is Marty, and I'm one of the few who adored KUNDUN,) MAGNOLIA, LOST SOULS (Janusz Kaminski's directorial debut with really good buzz,) LAZARUS AND THE HURRICANE (Denzel plays the legendary boxer Hurricane Carter who was wrongly imprisoned on a trumped up murder charge,) EXISTENZ (hoping that Cronenberg can bounce back from the chilly CRASH,) and, just to rile L'Auteur and LaneMeyers, THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE (directed by some hack.) I noticed that GHOST DOG made someone's list above; I've read it, and, well..... it's Jarmusch (and I mean that in a good way.) As for JULIEN, count me among the non-believers in regards to Harmony Korine's "ability." I used to wonder if there was maybe something I wasn't getting about Mr. Korine until I met him. I know this is a harsh thing to say, but the guy is an idiot. Furthermore, he's shooting JULIEN under the Dogme '95 rules, which is a real sticking point since Lars Von Trier, one of the guiding spirits of the agreement, can't stand him. Last I heard, Harmony was trying to secure the post-production facilities that are set aside for all Dogme' 95 participants at the same time Lars was planning to be there. Point blank: if Von Trier is there, Harmony WILL NOT be. I don't care if Herzog is a fan of Korine, I can't stand him. It should come as no surprise that one as his main benefactors is Cary Woods, who is also a production partner of Devlin and Emmerich. Now there's someone who knows talent!

In addition to the other films listed above, I am looking forward to:
-
As talented a director/writer as Cameron Crowe is, do you think that it's possible for him to get an oscar nominated(and hopefully this time oscar winning) performance out of Brad Pitt?
-
Nobody has mentioned this one, though I realize it was actually released last year, but I'm really looking forward to finally seeing The Idiots, Lars Von Trier's new film. It's supposed to be released in Atlanta sometime in March, but I'll believe it when I'm in the theatre. Also the South Park movie could go either way, really funny or really stupid. Bofinger's Big Thing is also another one that could go either way. Also how about Gladiator and Joan of Arc? The photos look great. The 13th Warrior had a great looking trailer, though I know virtually nothing else about it. How bout some news Harry!!
Of course like everyone else I can't wait for Phantom Menace, EWS, eXistenZ, Magnolia, The Green Mile, Blair Witch Project, The Mummy, Dogma, Summer of Sam, Princess Monoke, Iron Giant, Austin 2, and Arnofsky's movie. -
My arthritis kicked in and sent the last post, GB.
All films mentioned prior sound great. However, I want to see Million (or Billion) Dollar Hotel. Bono wrote the screenplay. Wenders directs. Mel Gibson possibly shaves head for role. Jimmy Smits has part. Just want to see how it fares.
As for Brad Pitt, I think he is trying to get on the list of actors who don't sell out. Fight Club, Crowe project. Trying to prove he isn't another pretty face. Kudos.
