Great stuff. I am way past there.
-
sigh...what morons will write when they're scrambling to try to get first and haven't even glimpsed the article...
-
THIS SHIT IS COOL.... Bet all of these will be better than Rob Zombie's Halloween!!!! That douchebag
-
how many morons, not here, but in the theatres are going to think these are real movies...
-
They were condensed down to half the time and only the best parts.
-
isn't that true of 50% of the FEATURES you see in theaters as well? ;o)
-
Love the Wilhelm at the end of the Load Bearing Stud trailer.
-
When you can just make flicks in the style of really bad 70's movies, call it a "homage" and people will applaud you for being ironic and kitchy? Good idea...a decade ago with From Dusk Till Dawn. Then 5 more hours of it with Kill Bill...ok, we get the point . Any time you guys are ready to start making real movies...Wait, Rose McGowan's in it? With a gun for a leg? Ignore that last rant.
You have an UNSUPPORTED DATABASE TYPE error on the bottom of your page, you might want to check your .php files. Maybe settings.php.

He'd suck his own mother's dick on film to be mentioned in the same breath as RR & QT.Fucking hack.

Something is either good or it isn't. Homage or 100% original. Something being good is a matter of opinion. Everybody has different opinions. We all will never agree. I don't know what I'm saying. Oh yeah. I like Tarantino movies. I like Rodriguez movies. I love the thought of Rose McGowan having a gun for a leg. I'm looking forward to Grindhouse. Hail baby!

Check out the marquee sign the Death Proof car blasts through. I can't think of two better movies to destroy.

Fuck yeah. This could've come out yesterday and it wouldn't be soon enough. Are the last few clips missing sound, or is that just on my end?

Maiden of Death, that's pretty badass. Love the shot at the end with her playing guitar.

INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, PULP FICTION PREQUEL (VEGA BROS.), BEVERLY HILLS COP 4 (TRUE ROMANCE STYLE), SON OF SCARFACE (TONY'S WIFE REAPPEARS KNOCKED UP).
OOOPS MY BAD, ITS ALL BULLSHIT. NEVER WILL HAPPEN.
MAIDEN OF DEATH WON. LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING RODRIGUEZ'S FEATURE. -
Is it loud where you are? Keep waiting, asshole.

"Load Bearing Stud" like, right now. QT, come over my house. We'll make you cookies.

Maiden of Death is definately the best there. That was the closest to looking professional. I also enjoyed Dead Noon and Cannibal Hookers from Hollywood, but Maiden of Death was by far the best.
-
Pretty good but not very old-time grindhousey.

From the name I never would have thought I'd want to see that more than either of the Grindhouse bill - its already got a better guitar slicing a vehicle in half scene than WILD ZERO, and 0% zombies, so I'm sold.

and watch the rest of these bitches. Best AICN joint in a very long time! Thanks all . . .

Nice to see that Tarantino is finally totally up front about his foot fetish. Like 10 minutes starring Uma's flappers in Kill Bill wasn't enough.
-
I like it very much. And "Mister Muerte" is note perfect! They all made me larf. Nice jorb!

Damn you Michael Bay
-
I liked blood brothers(the voice over was quality) and Mr Muerte the best. The flutes in Emmamuelle were nice.Maiden of Death was quite fuuny. The rock monkey in the coffin was a nice touch in Dr Frankenstein.Neighbour deadly neighbour gets a note for the main actor having a J Arthur over the corpse, thats dedication.Load bearing stud is a good title and was a good laugh.Devils Dick had a severed head shooting mystic beams, thats always good. The lesbians about to kiss transforming into vampires at the beginning of SF 666 was innovative.Black Mantis was ok.Thorr= "Ho's need love too woman" Amen...........Good luck and well done to everybodys efforts, all good fun........Grindhouse looks like a good laugh,I'd like to see that when it reaches.Americans have Grindhouse, heres our version....http://tinyurl.com/38oh7d.

"...the exact same experience, almost like a grindhouse ride."
By now I can't even smirk about this anymore, as it sounds like mockery. Grindhouse will not be shown as a double-feature anywhere outside the USA. For the rest of the world it'll be Planet Terror first as an individual movie, then Death Proof half a year later individually. The German publishers at least have agreed to release special double-feature screennigs (once Death Proof premiers) including the fake trailers, which will not be shown during the regular screenings.
It is to be expected that there will also be separate DVDs for each movie and a special limited double-feature DVD box containing both movies later on.
Thanks for ripping the rest of us off and laughing in our faces with every interview, mentioning how cool this double-feature stuff is. -
Actually - Tarantino and Rodriguez really don't have control over what foreign distributors do. That's why bad dubs take place, why films get re-edited in different countries. Once the rights to a territory are sold - often times during the production of a film - those independent distributors can basically do with the film as they please - including not releasing it at all. When I talked to Robert about it - he told me that he isn't sure how they'd do that - as the way the films are put together - The opening titles are onscreen at the same time at the head of the picture. And there's other things they do as well.
-
STOP THE MADNESS! Dutch distributor A-film is known for there excellent dvd releases and cinema distribution but is now going to make there first big mistake by releasing Grindhouse as 2 seperate movies. Was printed in the newspaper this week. Let's just hope its a marketing stunt.
-
Really nice. They made plenty, thats for damn sure. I wish you guys would post who directed them.

Grindhouse look to it. And "Maiden of Death" looked amazing. But it looked like someone had some major cash to make something look that good. "Dead Noon" looked like they ripped some special effects from StarWars Episode III for those hell/lava scenes and stole some ideas from Ghost Rider. I still wanna see how it came out.
-
here it is,
http://tinyurl.com/2jppcl -
...I do admit I'm looking forward to this in the same way I used to secretly cheer when I heard Loose Shoes was going to be on HBO late on a Friday or Saturday night when I was a kid.
-
...to be a Grindhouse movie. It looks like a music video that was repurposed into a Grindhouse trailer. Still, that's some stiff competition.
-
...needs to be made into a feature film NOW!!!
-
And Maiden of Death is the slickest, but that doesn't necessarily mean the best. Actually, it IS the best, but slickness and best don't always go together. It's just in THIS case it did, but sometimes it doesn't. Did that make sense? I'm rambling. But Birds of Prey takes second place, after Maiden. Birds is pretty funny.
-
Mega Bitch Meltdown made me laugh, Dead Noon had potential, Blood Brothers was well done...
I would rather see any of these made into features over 85% of the theatrical releases shoved down our throats.
If Tarrantino and Rodriguez were truly interested in promoting indie films and helping filmmakers like themselves they would start a company that would release feature films by people like this. Now that would be cool! -
Everyone's posting their films before Mr Rodriguez has had a chance to sit down and watch them?!
Our double-bill - SLASH HIVE (aka SIX DEATHS IN A WASP'S EYE) and TRANNIBAL FLESH FEAST won't be posted on youtube until we know whether El Mariachi has seen them and decided whether he wants them for GRINDHOUSE 101.....
Cautious I know, but there you are!
Well done and Good Luck to all the other entrants by the way: there's a lot of really great trailers on here!!!!.... -
That PSA was great!
To anyone else: Why do people bother putting a space in the url links they post? Its a no-brainer why you'd do it with e-mail addresses, but its not like urls get spammed from random bots! -

forced into weight loss programs...all this week on Town Talk!
That's what a "previous" title in the Miami one made me think of. -
and I'm no Peter Sellers. My epic "Harlem Hustlers Versus the Nazi Zombies" will never get made. Much like Jerry Lewis' "Day the Clown Cried," I'm sure it will become the stuff of myth and legend.I had a whole cycle of "Harlem Hustlers" ideas for them to battle Werewolves from Mars and such. And, yes, it would have OBVIOUSLY been not shot in Harlem, to achieve true b-movie city-double authenticity. But, I love these trailers. "Emmanuelle: Prisoner of Frankenstein" is the one I am surprised never actually got made back in the 70s.
-
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has taken the time to check out the "Neighbor" trailer and especially to Harry for naming it among your "faves." I can't tell you how much that means to me.
I would be remiss, however, if I didn't say that you all should really check out the "Althea Jones" trailer as well. I know the sound is shitty in places, but Dave did a damn fine job of helming that one and I'm very proud of him and his work. Thanks! -M.A. -
Pretty scary. I liked Bitch Bus '74 as well.

Harry, I don't blame Tarantino or Rodriguez for the separate screenings of the movies. I've been looking for English statements, but didn't find any. Plenty of it in German (and surely other languages as well). Like here:
http://www.movie-infos.net/horror.php?do=view&newsid=15063
"Nach Information der Weinstein Company starten die Filme "Planet Terror" und "Death Proof" auf Wunsch aller beteiligten Kreativen und Produzenten international, das heißt überall außerhalb der USA, zeitversetzt."
"According to the Weinstein Company, the movies "Planet Terror" and "Death Proof" will be released delayed internationally, meaning everywhere outside the USA, at the request of all involved creative parties and producers."
An official statement, including one by Tarantino and Rodriguez, was promised for early January. Nothing came so far.
So no, it was not the foreign distributors who decided to split Grindhouse. The order came from Weinstein. -
...Dead Noon and Maiden of Death. They look pretty kick-ass.
-
the only kung fu trailer? I thought there would be hundreds of chop socky trailers....
-
Come on! check out the Virgin of Prey! I know Harry didn't list it as one of his favs, but honestly, I think it's better than some of those. We worked really hard on it and I really think you'll get a kick out of it!

What happened to Die Gook Die? Fucking Brilliant!
-
hobo with a shotgun looks lagit! Is he a real hobo? I like the bum fights reference. i liked it when some of those old 70's films throw on a good social commentary.
-
I made "Blood Brothers" on a whim and now I actually get to be on AICN! I won't blame you if you don't like it. I had to be my own cast and crew!
I also agree that "Maiden of Death" is probably one of the best ones here. It is definitely pro and puts mine to shame. However, all of my favorites are the ones that are more low-budget because it really captures the grindhouse spirit which wasn't very slick at all. I love all the little 70s details in them.
I really enjoy watching these and I can't believe mine is even on here! Thanks to all three people who said they liked it :) -
Big thanks to Harry from the creators, cast and crew of Virign of Prey! What an honor to be included in this list!
-
Kickass trailer!..Blood Brothers would win the Shinya Tsukamoto creepiest trailer contest for sure!
-
I kinda liked Blood Brothers. Of course it's after 4:20 so I'm suffering from a momentary lapse of fuck all.
-
The guy doing Himmler was great. My fiancee is German so I'm sure she'll just love this. Watching Beerfest with her was freakin funny.

I could have sworn i just saw Hiro from Heroes in the Maiden of Death trailer.

It's gonna be a great time!
-
with disappoinment as I realize there aren't one hour and twenty minutes more of "Hobo With A Shotgun!" to look forward to...
-
Quentin, okay, I'm going to give you Grindhouse. It does look fun and what not. But after the Kill Bill movies and now this, PLEASE return to storytelling! You've done your homage to 70s genre flicks. Kill Bill v2 had moments of character and storytelling, but overall both movies were just blah. Self indulgient directing and writing that basically just said, "I like these old crappy kung-fu 70s crap movies." So with Grindhouse, which is the ultimate self indulgient trip (I'm not denying it MAY be fun), PLEASE Quentin, let it be the last. At least for awhile. Get back to what you did with RD and Pulp Fiction. Character depth. Storytelling. Excellence. Don't rely on dated genres. We know you love the 70s. We know you loved those crappy indies. A lot of us do. We don't need to see a rehash of them. You're a talented director. You were the Scorsese of our generation. Now it just looks like you're a video store employee that studios, for some odd reason, gave you millions to indulge yourself. Just miss you trying something ORIGINAL.
-
this is the one my friend and I made for the contest
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GYodO1adxdE -
Hobo with a shotgun was funny. The Women is Tank looked authentic in a 70's kind of way, lovelyyyyyyy.Orionsangels= I had the same problem,It worked when I refreshed the page.Sith Witch= nice one, they have kept me alive(but scared, very scared) =>,Donald Pleasence was class,They could remake those for todays youth but they would probably replace his voice with M.Mcdowall and say Death got the hood from the leathery skin of drowned children and wears different shades of brown to denote his mood(I'm keeping an open mind Honest).

The naysayers/negative nancies in this thread are a...
by beastmanseventy
Source of endless amusement.
MetalWater keeps going on about how they all suck for their lack of polish, unprofessional feel and rough edges... I guess he totally missed the point of this contest. It's called GRINDHOUSE, as in GRINDING THEM OUT. It's not called "Polish it up real nice and be professional about it-House".
Maiden Of Death is awesome, but it's like, 90's action flick awesome. It is not Grindhouse at all and it lacks the beautiful slipshod amateur feeling that makes the other ones so much goddamn fun.
Moto, Kill Bill's characters are just as deep as those found in Pulp Fiction if not more so, you were just distracted by the cool stuff. If you don't like colorful action scenes and awesome music, you don't like film. Besides, there's no such thing as a crappy kung fu movie.
Glad to see someone liked my trailer (Run Charlie Run). I had no idea the competition would be so awesome though.
But anyways, yeah. I just wanted to say that this thread has been a good example of both the cool enthusiasm for underground cinema that is supposed to define message boards like this, and the stupid, numbskulled negativity and naysayery that DOES define message boards like this. And now I'll probably never comment in another Talkback thread ever again, just that, since my movie was featured in this article, I felt the responsibility to speak up.
Check out some of my other movies if you liked Run Charlie Run: http://youtube.com/profile?user=GilbertSmit h (Remove the space before the last H). -
Come on the best one here is " Too DEAD to DIE" so what if am the holy man in it. We had so much fun shooting this. Good luck to everyone. See you all at the Grindhouse. God bless you all..

Come on the best one here is " Too DEAD to DIE" so what if am the holy man in it. We had so much fun shooting this. Good luck to everyone. See you all at the Grindhouse. God bless you all..

They're all too fucking good. I can't pick a favorite. But Too Dead To Die is definitely one of the best.
-
You're ridin' SHOTGUN!
-
Yes, his fondness for female feet. It's called FEET FUCKERS. It's all filmed at low angles. I say go for it. As long as the HO's have pedicured feet. Why not?
-
I'll pay money to watch that movie, seriously. HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN!!!
-
I'd pay money to watch any one of these. Any single one of these trailers is 100x as exciting as anything playing in theaters right now.
-
Hobo with a Shotgun is the best by far!
-
Black Mantis is pretty pwn too!
-
If it weren't for the BumFights reference, I would have sworn that this was an actual vintage grindhouse flick. I almost puked when I saw the part with the teeth.
-
WAY too flashy. To me it looks like a B-Movie rather than a grindhouse flick. It looks like a lot of fun, just not dirty, sleazy grindhouse fun; more anime, DBZ, Fast & The Furious kind of fun.
I really enjoyed Heathen High School Splatter Fest Part 666. The part with the dude who looks like Bane is fucking terrifying. -
Has my vote.
-
I had to cut the scene involving an American soldier being force-fed his own severed penis. Just wasn't enough daylight left to shoot it.
-
Maiden of Death does indeed look awesome. I am all about hot chicks with guitars. But in no way does it look like a Grindhouse style trailer. If the stipulation for this contest is to make it look like a seventies era Grindhouse film then it shouldn't win. The other film makers probably could put out work as impressive as Maiden but this wasn't a "put out the best quality, sleek trailer you can" type of contest. It was to look like a Grindhouse style film.
-
Wow, you summed up my thoughts EXACTLY in your "The naysayers/negative nancies in this thread are a..." post. Well said, man, well said! Fat_Lady_Killer, you too.
-
thank you fat lady killer you are so right...the crew that shot "Too Dead To Die" is real good. oh trust me, they shot all over town. look at all the set ups. they did not shoot this in one day or night. few weeks is more like it. i have seen some stuff from this crew and it is real good quality. these kids are up and comers.
-
You wrote, "Moto, Kill Bill's characters are just as deep as those found in Pulp Fiction if not more so, you were just distracted by the cool stuff. If you don't like colorful action scenes and awesome music, you don't like film. Besides, there's no such thing as a crappy kung fu movie." Okay, I am pretty sure you're kidding about the no crappy kung-fu movies. I LOVE kung-fu movies, and sorry, there ARE a lot of crappy ones. Tons of them. And the thing about "I don't like film" if I don't enjoy colorful action sequences and "awesome music"? Well, that just doesn't make any sense. As far as the whole Kill Bill characters' depth compared to Pulp. I agree with you. There were moments of great character and storytelling, as I had said. The problem with those movies was those bright spots were completely overshadowed by Quentin trying to be "cool". Kung-Fu gore, 70s schtick, etc., mostly in the first film, really took away from the character depth. The difference between Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction/RD, at least in my eyes, was that the story in Pulp and RD was really a driving force to show us the characters. There's the depth. With Kill Bill, the characters were there to showcase the homage to kung-fu theater and 70s era pop culture. I'm not saying Kill Bill wasn't fun to watch. I'm saying I wish Quentin would go back to storytelling... and characters. Kill Bill, Kill Bill 2, and Grindhouse are all about an homage to the flicks Quentin grew up with. Fun? Sure. But up to par with the storytelling of RD and Pulp? No. Shit, Quentin's scripts for those two still showcased his inspiration of the 70s and pop culture, but WITHOUT showboating it and going over-the-top like he did with the more recent. Again, I'm not saying these newer flicks aren't fun. I just want to see the Quentin that shook up the film industry. I want to see the type of scripts he became famous for. True Romance, Natural Born Killers, RD, Pulp Fiction. Edgy shit. Original stories. Not homages. It's getting old.
-
for me, it's between these three
what an awesome and fun competition, they should make this an annual thing, even some of the worst ones are still worth one viewing -
Right fuckin' now! So sayeth Hobo With a Shotgun!
-
Beastmanseventy, you rock! Exactly the point. The purpose of this unusual contest was for people to go out and make something crazy and fun, and have fun while doing it. For all that want something that is steeped in cinematic technicalities, go check out the Sundance channel. There I'm sure you will get a chance to "talk shop" and exchange all of the big film vocabulary and know how you acquired in film school. Your knowledge of "cinema" must also include the word excuses, excuses why you never made a trailer yourself. Kudos to all that did and entered, you all did a fantastic job, great to see people just picking up a camera and running with it.
-
Str8 up hilarious, sick, twisted.. I could go on! Great job whoever made those things! My favs were: Black Mantis, Hobo With a Shotgun, Cannibal Hookers from Hollywood, Mega Bitch Meltdown, The Virgin of Prey, Neighbor Deadly Neighbor, and Thorr Sex Detective. I enjoyed them all except the one about Jesus which wasn't funny to me but oh well. Thanks for bringing these pieces to our attention Harry. I'll be rewatching these for awhile!

Um, is Carts up by mistake? There is no way that lame thing is one of their trailers.Hobo with a Shotgun though? Pretty nice. The title alone would buy my ticket

Really, anyone can make a slick, professional looking movie. What's hard is to make a movie that's energetic or funny or exciting or dangerous or scary. Mainstream film can't do it like they used to, even independent film can't really cut it anymore. These trailers are the most effective trailers I've seen in a decade.
-
I love this stuff!
My Top 3 have to be Maiden of Death, Hobo w/a shotgun, and the double feature including FOOT FIEND. -
I'm just sayin though.
-
That new one added, Cong Of The Dead, is one of my favorites. Ironically, I was THIS CLOSE to making the exact same thing as his Viet Kong.
-
Lot of good trailers posted here. Some are interesting, some are almost to polished for a Grindhouse competition. The DEAD NOON trailer rocks though! Looks like they had a few dollars to spend on effects. Still, that's my pick to win the competition

Hey Harry,
I think it is really cool that you are showing the trailers for this contest on your site. I visit your site often but have never posted anything. I am posting now so I can put up the link to the grindhouse trailer that my class did. I hope you like it.

Ok these trailers are so sick, this contest was an amazing idea, you can tell alot of people took it to heart to try and bring back a nearly faded genre and its gets me pumped for Grindhouse. My faveorite trailer has to be "HOBO WITH A SHOTGUN" while I was scrolling through the list and got to that one i had to watch it a few times befor i could move on. way to go guys hope its the winner.
-
maybe I'm biased, but that trailer has the hottest women.
-
Are you serious? Well that really sucks and takes the fun out of it. Hoping the UK show them together with the trailers. I was looking forward to seeing my first double feature :(

some of these are ok.
i might post one for myself.
grindhouse is going to be amazing though -
Maiden of Death looks awesome. props, yo! ;P

All of the trailer are great. i want to know something tho. the people who made these trailers how long did take and where did you shoot it? and what did you shoot on ? how much $$ was spent if any to do your trailer? thanks

We shot ours in one day (11AM-6PM) out in the sticks where family lives. We had one camera and shot on DV. We spent all of maybe $200 and that's including the tapes, the gallon of blood, a fake severed head, sheets of plexi and the most expensive thing - the food to feed people! Now ours is no way expensive looking (which is kinda the point right?) and I think Maiden of Death's end titles were about five times more expensive than our trailer, but it was fun and everyone had a blast doing it.

In regards to theholyman's inquiries:
We shot "Isle Of The Flesheaters over 3 days, in Orlando, Fl and the Florida Keys. The majority of money went to making costumes, and gas for travel. Kept it under $200. We shot with the Sony HDR-FX1. -

we shot for a day and half with time for two days of editing. the music took a week and a half. we spent a few hundred dollars mostly feeding the actors and buying a few props. it was shot hd. -
right on.. i do not know for sure, but we shot maybe over 3 weeks . and shot all over L.A..we had a good size cast and crew all worked for free.iam pretty sure we spent NO $$ at all maybe 50 dollers and thas it. the car shots where about less then 25 feet from Paramount pictuers.

All in, I'd say Birds of Prey totaled around $400. Half of that went to the studio space rental (nothing's free in LA). My friend who did the make-up effects on my other short offered her services and she went to a Vietnamese Butcher shop the morning of the shoot and bought guts galore. Too bad much of that detail is lost in the YouTube compression. The jaw effect was using a jaw from a plastic skull purchased on ebay. We shot on my DVX100b and the shoot took place a week before the deadline and lasted about 5 hours. All the effects work (color & grain) was done using After Effects. All in all it was great fun, and I'm thinking about shooting some more small scenes and putting this out as a semi-regular webisode series. Thanks to all who watched and much respect to the other filmmakers who have contributed!

I did mine all for nothin but what I already had. Didn't seem worth it to put money in.
-
I really enjoyed everey last one but I loved FOOT FIEND" & "HEATHEN HIGH SCHOOL SPLATTER FEST PART 666
and Cong Of The Dead!! Can't wait for Grindhouse is April! -
that is a real good trailer.. love the music. so did you shoot in L.A. ? if you payed for studio space. talk to me next time and i will get it for you for free. and yes you sould make it webisode series. the two actors are good.it looks like you had alot of fun doing it.... good luck
-
I spent zero dollars and shot it in about two hours at a public park.
The guy coming out of the water with the knife was a swamp cleaner we met there. We put a chinaman hat on him and stuck him in the movie. Making movies is not as hard as people make it out to be. -
just wanted to thank Harry and everyone else who checked out our little trailer. We did it with basically nothing, just money to buy the tapes and food for our actor. Dave, the guy who played hobo, is not too well off and this is the first time hes ever had a camera pointed at him and ive been reading all your comments to him and this has really brightened up his life. Thanks guys. And before this thread goes off into oblivion i just wanted to say good luck to everyone and its been super fun. Thanks again.
Hobo with Shotgun! -
If this doesn't get him some acting work I'll be surprised. Hope his circumstances improve.

Ok, what do you all think of this. I've had a great time with this whole experience and it seems everyone else has too. So my first question would be... WHY STOP? I've gone ahead and registered grindhouseorama.com. Seeing as how most of these trailers were done on a shoestring budget and fairly quickly, why not do this all again next year? This year's trailers belong to the SXSW contest and far be it from me to undercut that, but I'd like to build an online film fest to go live sometime next year, where we can do this all over again! Format wouldn't have to be much different than this. One massive barrage of sex, drugs, violence, and rock 'n roll. Thoughts???
-
I think that would be awesome, but I'd want content all year round. Maybe break it into trailers, shorts, etc. that are all grindhouse related and have the annual awards? Also, I've talked to some others and like the Birds of Prey creators, a lot of peole have put interest into doing webisodes of these crazy characters. I think that's awesome too. It's great to get the creativity going among people.

Heathen, Being the Birds of Prey creator, I'll second and third that motion, haha. How about making more of a portal site then for all things grindhouse revival? I've got some web & graphics design chops and I do like your idea of constant content. I guess I was trying not to bite off more than I could chew, but I'm up for the challenge! Anyone who would like to lend a hand would be most welcome, too. This could be good...

from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grindhouse:
"Exploitation films is a loosely defined term to describe a genre of films that typically sacrifice the traditional notions of artistic merit for a more sensationalistic display, often featuring excessive sex, violence, and gore. Such films have existed since the earliest days of moviemaking, but they were popularized in the 1970s with the general relaxing of cinematic taboos in the U.S. and Europe."
"grindhouse is an American term for a theater that mainly showed exploitation films, or is an often misused term to describe the genre of films that played in such theatres (which are actually "exploitation films"). Grind-houses were known for non-stop, triple-bill programs of B movies, usually consisting of a double feature where two films are shown back to back. Many of these inner-city theatres formerly featured burlesque shows which featured "bump and grind" dancing, leading to the term "grind-house." Beginning in the late 1960s and especially during the 1970s, the subject matter of exploitation films shown in these theaters often included explicit sex, violence, bizarre or perverse plot points, and other taboo content."
So... in saying Maiden doesn't have the "Grindhouse feel", do you mean "it doesn't share the spirit or themes", or do you mean "it doesn't have awful camerawork/lighting/acting/editing/everything or a lame film-scratch filter"? -
I'll buy a ticket/DVD if this ever becomes a feature.
-
Maiden of death does not have the grindhouse feel because it looks like the movie was shot infront of a green screen. Part of the beauty of some of the old grindhouse films was that they were made for nothing and had to be filmed on the street. Maiden of Death has the look of a modern day music video. The trailer looks great but its got no soul.
-
It sounds great, but I know what you mean about biting off more than you can chew. I'm a graphic designer, but mainly in print. One of my side projects that started in the AICN Comics section is reviewing comics ( myspace.com/cogsmooches ) and that's hard enough, but I'd love to help out in any way I could. Keep me posted.
rodney, chillax my friend. I'm sure you won't have trouble finding work if your trailer is Maiden of Death. It's good. No need to get panties in bunches. ; ) -
...did you not see Rose McGowan launching a rocket with her machine gun leg and rolling out of the way of an exploding car? Pretty 70s!
-
You really need to throw together a one sheet for Hobo w/a Shotgun.
I'd have that shit framed and mount it next to my Nuns with Guns one sheet in the living room.
Make it happen man! You already have a hell of a fanbase here. -
Heres the poster we made for Hobo With a Shotgun, i hope you like.

great job ...where did you shoot it and how long did it take and how much $$$ ?

We are the writer/directors of the Maiden of Death trailer. We’re not professional filmmakers, but like many of you, aspire to be. We didn’t ask to be written up on AICN. So it’s quite an honor. Once it was here, we planned on staying out of the discussions completely, letting the work speak for itself. However, it’s gotten to a point where people are presumed to be speaking as us. This is a different story. We feel it necessary now to clear the air.
Rumor control. Here are the facts: $1400 painfully spent. Most of it travel expense to fly three friends in to help out, one of which was the main actress. Shot over two, very long, grueling days. Guerilla style. No permits, no permission. Found locations, whatever could be used. No equipment rental. Locked edit in the three days following shoot. Rest of post in less than five days. Three days straight with two hours of sleep to finish on time. Worked up until we had to ship FedEx on the 10th of February (which we actually missed and had to send it via a courier service at a tune of $200).
It wasn’t “done way before the contest” and we didn’t have “a lot of money.” To be called “soulless” feels like an attack not just on us but also on all of our friends who helped out. Like this labor of love is less legitimate than anybody else’s. It’d be a lie to say we’re not bothered by it. Everyone gave up their free time, which we imagine is the same for everybody else involved in this competition. It was just as low budget and guerilla as anything else. Just two guys who got together and made something on a whim. We entered the competition for the same reasons everyone else did; we wanted to have a laugh doing something fun with family and friends and hopefully get it into some sort of screening.
Whether or not it is “grindhouse”, we feel, is an argument in semantics. However, we can honestly say that movies like “Heavy Metal”, “The Wraith”, and anime like “FLCL”, along with classics of the genre like “Female Convict Scorpion Jailhouse 41”, “Coffy”, and old chop-socky flicks were our sources of inspiration.
That's it.
P.S. Sorry about the length of this post.
-
should have an event featuring all of the grindhouse contest trailers...we could even vote for our own top 10!
-
I think Maiden Of Death is fucking awesome, and it's got plenty of heart, it just doesn't feel trashy or scuzzy. That's the one thing keeping it from being the clear cut winner.
-
move along, creeps.
-
It's pretty easy to shit all over people's ambitions, isn't it? What did you do with the last couple weeks of your life that's so special? I don't think anyone here owes you anything more than a "Get Fucked" for your aimless negativity.
-
TANK is the only one that comes close to looking like an authentic grindhouse exploitation flick. the rest just look like cheesy b horror films or backyard balderdash. plus it has the best looking girl

"Cannibal Hookers From Hollywood" was made with owing lots of favors, borrowing some equipment and renting out some stuff, with total cost coming in around 400 bucks. I think I spent more money on buying food for those helping me out! We shot the whole thing guerilla style in 2 nights with a total of 10 hours to shoot. It was kind of crazy because we were filming off busy Hollywood streets and we had real Johns rolling up to set trying to pick up our actresses, my friends. We also had hide the equipment every time a cop rolled by. Luckily we shot everything on a Panasonic DVX-100, so it was easy to look "inconspicuous." We quickly digitized, VO'd and edited the trailer in a little more than a day. So the total commitment to making "Cannibal Hookers From Hollywood" come to life was around 3 or 4 days. The hardest part of the whole thing was finding a time to get everyone together. I got lucky though, I have awesome friends who did it because we all love film and thought "Cannibal Hookers from Hollywood" was a bad ass title.
-
That sounds awesome! A annual contest to show some really awesome and & fun shit you made on the low-budge. I'm down. It would also be a great place to publicize any trailer you turn into a full feature. We're turning "Cannibal Hookers From Hollywood" into a full feature length film this summer and would love to post some clips and maybe even a "director's cut" of the trailer.

...is the new "Billy Jack" for the 21st Century. If y'all ever make this into a flick, make sure to record a new version of "One Tin Soldier" while you're at it!
-
Oh man, opening credits playing over Hobo walking the rails with a garbage bag slung over his shoulder to One Tin Soldier... That is a cinematic boner and a half.

Why is this not on there ???
Who's running the show ?
