BillyHitchcock calls HOT FUZZ - 'the best movie experience of his life!'

hey folks Harry here... this time it is with billyhitchcock of bristol - a bit of a hometown boy that had one helluva good time with HOT fuZZ and the holy shit funny trifecta of edgar, simon and nick. This is more his movie than it is most of ours - let's see a Bristol fanboy lose his fucking mind. Here ya go...

Hey Harry, I know you've already had a few reviews for Hot Fuzz, but i also know that you're totally hyped about this movie and are a sucker for a divine movie experience. Yesterday was mine. I'm surprised you guy's haven't had more about this really because the Hot Fuzz boys have been touring the UK for the last week doing signings, screenings and Q&A's and yesterday was the final leg, the homecoming if you will, in Bristol. I, as well as a lot of people, have been looking forward to this movie for a long time and it suddenly crept up on me a couple of weeks ago when my girlfriend who works at HMV said "you do know they're signing in the bristol store don't you?" Shit! I'm there! Then i found out they were handing out tickets to a screening and Q&A to the first 20 people in the queue. So early yesterday morning i'm standing outside the store in a totally dead mall with two very cool welsh dudes talking about one of the guys' extreme Evil Dead obsession :-) I'm third. Ticket secured! Shortly after two others show up so we think, ok here come's the rush. Two hours later, still 5 of us! Where is everybody? Surely the chance to meet pegg and frost and see the film with them would draw rabid films geeks from all over the region. Especially the home region of the star and director. So we get the tickets, and at about 12 the queue properly starts to build. Everyone takes turns to go eat and stuff, many spaced and shaun discussions take place and many jaffa cakes are eaten! As you can tell from my excitement this kind of thing doesn't happen over here very often, especially outside of london. American film geeks don't realise how lucky they are with fests and cons and screenings and Q&A's. This was my first one, with the only real big cult film stars we have and it was awesome. 7 hours fly by and we're herded in to the store like lepers, the huge, and totally unnecessary security guards talk to us like shit, and chavs point and say 'who?' when we tell them who's coming. I think i had 10 seconds with simon and nick, enough time to shake hands, get simon to write TFU on my one sheet and to have nick call me a nerd :-) totally worth it, and they looked genuinely happy to be there. but the security, cunts. (oops, £2 for the swearbox) So me and the welsh dudes drive over to the cinema, get in the queue where we meet Adam and Jenny from earlier (very nice people, who gave me a lift home), and i start to get well psyched about the next two hours. Minor Spoilers Ahead: Ok, as far as my review goes, i'm as biased as they come. i love these guys and everything they do, so it's gonna be no surprise that i fucking loved it. Even a day later i still think it's better than Shaun! And no matter how much i love zombies, this one was more consistently funny, had a shit load of cool action, and even better gore and deaths than SOTD. The acting was as you would expect from such a top notch cast, top class. And the fine line between playing it straight and homage was perfect. The references, even when blatant, are not forced or shoe horned in. They fit in perfectly with the tone of the movie. And wait til you see old people with guns, fucking hilarious! So to the Q&A. Although a little short, at about half an hour, simon and nick were on top form. After having apologised beforehand to the bristol crowd for his accent, nick got a round of applause afterwards, as he pretty much nailed it. although some city fans took offence at his rovers shirt in the movie ;-) simon talked alot about the action involved, the use of all the guns, and when he had to do stunts that broke his double's collar bone! some rather naive geek asked about spaced 3. a definate no-no, but escaped with a laugh from the guys and a box of jaffa cakes for his efforts. simon's answer on this is well documented, probably not, but never say never. as this was the home crowd, a lot of extras and smaller part actors were in the audience and some of the 'hoodies' from the film got a little curtain call. the movie has been on the front page of the local Wells paper for a year apparently and simon apologised for wrecking the place, doing 'in 7 weeks what the romans couldn't do in 500 years' :-) as for what's next, there's no plans for another immediate pegg, wright, frost team up, although simon and nick are writing together and simon and edgar are again as well. edgar is currently putting together his grindhouse trailer, starring simon and nick obviously, which i personally cannot wait for!!! anyway, that's it. the best movie experience of my life. billyhitchcock

"the best movie experience of my life"? WTF???

    by Motoko Kusanagi

Yeah, right. Then I guess you didn't see LORD OF THE RINGS or STAR WARS or BLADE RUNNER or BIG LEBOWSKI or [whatever] yet, right? Otherwise it's hard to believe that this little movie made you a better experience than those mentioned above.

  • Feb. 10, 2007, 9:48 a.m. CST

I saw it last Monday at the Gala screenings...

    by Dr_Zoidberg

and even without a Q&A Hot Fuzz is just so fucking funny it's hard to believe. I was in pain the day after because my cheeks (on face) were still strained. It's a solid, proper 2 hour comedy. Yes, it's uneven but not in a bad way, the film is just so varied. And I would not DARE talk about the last section, because it surprised me in the way it was done. I don't know what Americans will think of this, but it's so ridiculously over the top its bound to make some of you laugh. The audience I was with were hysterical. I'm going to see it again on Valentines Day when it opens. HERE COME THE FUZZ!!!!!!!!!

  • Feb. 10, 2007, 10:05 a.m. CST

    re: Motoko

since you seem to lack the empathy to understand why BillyHitchcock said what he said - here ya go.

BillyHitchcock lives in Bristol - the area that HOT FUZZ was shot and takes place. In addition - he is a SPACED fan - a brilliant television show that the creative team behind this film had two seasons of - before taking off for the larger screen. In addition - he's never attended a film with talent, a director or anything other than - a regular movie screening... much less one with his personal cult heroes.

Film experiences are much more than just the film in question. Like - watching ALIENS in a theater is great... but watching ALIENS in a theater while receiving your first Blow Job ever and with the Cast and crew speaking afterwards... well, that'd be a better film experience than just seeing the movie.

SO cut BillyHitchcock some slack - he had a great time with what is reportedly a great fun film - do not begrudge him his high, it's one that we should all hope for... either with this film or some future film. that feeling of walking out of a theater with the sensation - THAT WAS THE BEST FILM EVER... it's rare, but priceless.

    psyched about this movie

    by misnomer

comes out here in the UK in a week or so. I think what some americans may not understand is that the cast of this movie, and all the cameos are from really great comic talent. Bill Bailey - a fantastic and renowned comedian in the UK, Freeman from the office, the actress from peepshow-a comedy that wipes the floor with anything gervais could come up with....its just a great great cast of britains best comedians who are rarely seen working together. thats the kind of novelty the brits will enjoy that the american audience might miss. its our movie equivalent of saturday night live really.

And no, I have't seen it. But unless it's on par with, say, The Godfather (if The Godfather was a British comedy) it can't help but be a monumental disappointment. Not after the roughly 327 glowing reviews posted in the last week. Seriously...enough. We get it.

I'm a huge Spaced fan.I'm a huge Shaun fan.I don't feel the need to go into why but I am.I have not seen this film.I want to.Very much. But something is amiss here...............AICN has access to the production and LO AND BEHOLD it's a must see!I try to think back when this site had no agenda but it's difficult,I thinkthe LOTR was the point of blowjobbing.Maybe I'm wrong,hell...this site has very little in the way of COOL news apart from how good a friend Harry is of mexican directors and ignores the most heated talkback points (X3 and Transformers).Somethings rotten in Denmark..........or rather....HAS BEEN....much like the site....why do I come her?Hope.Hope.But now...........oh,the horror. The horror.Just not reliable in any way.

    Wait a second.

    by CoursinLarry

There are actually people on this planet who think Hot Fuzz won't kick ass? Didn't these guys (Pegg, Wright, and Frost) earn everybody's undying respect with Shaun of the Dead? That movie was so carefully planned out, so much love and thought was put into it. There's no way Hot Fuzz will be anything less than spectacular. I mean, for crying out loud, at the very least look what else we have to choose from these days. Norbit?!? Epic Movie?!?!? Fuckin' Ghost Rider?!?!? I for one know that the film world is better place for having these guys in it.

  • Feb. 10, 2007, 2:22 p.m. CST

Ok maybe I derserve the flamiing here

    by AllPowerfulWizardOfOz

I did not realize this was the same guys who did Shaun Of The Dead which I enjoyed. I read into it thinking that this was a rip in the vein of SOTD without realizing it was the same people lol who made SOTD. So fuck me for not researching more. Again with all the bullshit reviews that come into AICN sometimes it gets so annoying that we all assume it's a plant or a farce.

    by Motoko Kusanagi

I guess there's at least one guy on this planet who thinks HOT FUZZ won't kick ass. He also has no undying respect for Pegg, Wright, and Frost just because of this little movie called SHAUN O.T. DEAD which was ok but nothing more.
"There's no way Hot Fuzz will be anything less than spectacular." Erm, well---nah, forget it.

    Hot Fuzz Review

    by barnaby jones

I saw HF last Monday, i sent a review in, but it wasn't posted by Harry, which is fair enough, my writing skills are pretty limited, anyway here it is - Rocky Balboa, The Fountain, Blood Diamond, The Illusionist and now Hot Fuzz, we've never had it so good ! Anyhow being lucky enough to attend a Gala Screening ( whatever the hell that means !? ) of the highly anticipated follow up to Shaun Of The Dead last night I thought I’d chip in with some. Can I start by saying what a fantastic kick off to 2007 we've had here in the U.K, with the likes of thoughts. Now if I’m being honest I was more than a little concerned as to how the gang ( Pegg/Frost/Wright ) would fare following up their oh so successful zom-com, second movies can be so hard to get right, I had images of fans dressing up in cloaks and carring out mass burnings much like Pegg's character in Spaced after seeing The Phantom Menace, however my lack of faith was disturbing as Hot Fuzz is an absolute blast, and as far as I’m concerned its the the best work they've done to date. It works on much the same the level that SOTD did, gently lampooning the gangs chosen subject, this time out the buddy cop and action blockbuster genres. It's this that really sets these guys apart, because they never go for the cheap laugh or crass joke at other movies expense, their affection and enthusiasm for the films they pay homage to ( Lethal Weapon, Bad Boy's and Point Break to name but a few ) is poured out onto the screen. As with SOTD, there’s a large ensemble cast ( in fact probably bigger ) here, and to Pegg and Wright's credit every character gets to shine, from old boys like, Jim Broadbent, Stuart Wilson and Edward Woodward to smaller characters such as Bill Bailey's amusing dual role to Alice Lowe's slutty female officer. A special mention has to go to Paddy Considine who's fast becoming a national treasure, his delivery here as a fellow officer who constantly opposes Pegg's new boy in town ( you know the type ) is so downright perfect he almost steals the film and then there's Timothy Dalton, okay so he’s still the vile panto baddie you're used to seeing, only here seems to be having so much fun you can't help but love to hate him, wait till you see his final scenes, it's flat out the funniest pay off you'll see all year. That’s not to say Pegg and Frost get lost amongst all these great performances, they are still still very much centre stage and they deliver exactly what you expect from them, pure gold. Ignore the tag line's 'Moderate Violence' claim this movie is gory as hell, not to mention the final third's huge set pieces to rival any Hollywood blockbuster. Action junkies are going to lap up the sly nods to all their favorites in these latter scenes, Hot Fuzz is by far the gangs most accomplished and polished flick to date. If I had any complaints, and I mean MINOR complaints, I’d say at 2 hours it was a little long and perhaps a touch slow at getting started, also I missed one of the old Spaced alumni, Jessica Stevenson, it would have been nice to see her in at least a cameo, but that’s just me being fussy, have no doubt Hot Fuzz is a success on every level and totally unmissable.
