Ain't It Cool News (

A Face From Space

I am – Hercules!! Spoilers ahead, so don’t highlight the invisotext if you don’t want to know: IGN reasonably theorizes that Summer Glau, she of “Firefly” and “Serenity” fame, will play a terminator, if not the terminator, in Fox’s “The Sarah Connor Chronicles.” Glau’s role is apparently being kept a secret because the audience (and presumably the Connors) will not at first know she’s a killer robot from the future. The proposed series, apparently set betwixt “Terminator 2” and “Terminator 3,” stars 33-year-old Lena Headey (“The Brothers Grimm,” “300”) as Sarah and 19-year-old Thomas Dekker (“Heroes”) as son John. Learn the reasoning behind IGN’s theory here.

    That's fucking lame.

    by kintar0

"Hey, Battlestar Galactica is really fucking popular, right? I got a great idea: let's just rip it off. And we'll cast that chick from Serenity so all those obsessive Joss Whedon fans'll watch it!" Suck. The Terminator is supposed to be intimidating.

    If she is THE Terminator,

    by loonigrrl

If she is THE Terminator, this show is doomed. I liked her in Firefly, but seriously, there's just no comparing her to Arnold and Robert Patrick.

I want to see a remake of Westworld. That would be kickass ( if done right)..And for that matter screw BSG and Firefly. Lets see a remake of the show they stole their best beats from, Space: Above and Beyond.

    Was there any hope anyway?

    by Son of Batman

C'mon, was there anyway in hell this show was going to be good? Any indication so far? Maybe we'll get to see her slow-turn, spin kick, zero weight/velocity Buffy karate "skills" like in Serenity. And doesn't having a Terminator show up in John and Sarah's lives in the timeline prior to the events of T2 dilute the effect of John seeing a Terminator for the first time, something he's only ever heard stories about? And Sarah's shock at being confronted by another identical Terminator, who instead of trying to kill her says "Come with me if you want to live?" Seems like AvP to me. Or does this take place between T2 and T3?

    by bobbyjoe

Naw, couldn't bring myself to watch that Fox show about hostage negotiators just because it starred Gina Torres, and I won't be watching this latest entry in the milked-dry Terminator franchise just because it has Summer Glau. I choose my soon-to-be-quickly-cancelled Fox shows starring former Firefly stars very carefully, and this year, I'm going with Nathan Fillion in "Drive," cause it's got some other interesting folks in it and Tim Minear besides.

Close... but no cigar (Pilot Spoilers)

    by AdvilTablet

Glau plays the second terminator, much like how the T-1000 was programmed in T2 & t3. She's sent (via John Connor) from the future to protect him and his mother in the past from a new Terminator (Not the Arnold model.) The bugger of the script is that in the last act, the Connors w/ Glau Terminator in tow for protection, jump into a time machine built inside a bank vault. I don't want to go into details... Anyway, time machine takes the Connors from 1998 to 2007. It made me go Huh? Several times. but alas, some good action scenes in the script and should allow Glau some ass-kicking scenes.

  • Feb. 10, 2007, 12:13 a.m. CST

    Arnie wasn't a T-1000...

    by kintar0

Robert Patrick was. Arnie's model was the T-800, and Kristanna Loken's was a T-X. Did the writer refer to Arnold's model as "T-1000" in the script you read or is that your mistake?

  • Feb. 10, 2007, 1:06 a.m. CST

    I love Glau.........

    by Jimmy Jazz

but the idea of a five foot nothing ex-ballerina as a combat ready killer robot is too stupid for words. River Tam as a pre programmed kung fu death machine in Serenity was already stretching my credulity to the breaking point. But it was Whedon, so I let it slide. But this is ludicrous. Not to mention the industrial strength retconning they are going to have to do to fit the movies' contnuity. What the hell is the point of this? Am I the only one who thinks that this whole concept is unecessary and idiotic?

  • Feb. 10, 2007, 1:39 a.m. CST

    Not a Terminator. She'd play A human.

    by The.Founder.

Just like in the First movie. Someone sent back to protect John or Sarah for a time.No way could she be a Female terminator. that barley worked in the third film, as in AT ALL. they should be going back to the roots of what made the first movie work. I could see her playing the part of John's daughter or some such, jumping back to train with him, or Learn all she can From Sarah herself, since her daddy would've been killed when she was young. Just a Guess......not Like I know anything,,,,,,.....nope...not a thing.

    This is sooooo confusing

    by UMAGA

We all know T3 sucked huge ass, but if this show is counting T3 as canon then there should be no Terminators at all. On the otherhand if what AdvilTablet says is tree and they go from 98 to 07 then T3 didn't happen and that very good, but also means JD didn't happen in 1997 like in T2. Crossing my fingers that we will continue to hear about T-800s, CyberDyne and old design HKs rther than T-850s, CRS, and fucking T-Xs.

    T3 was fine

    by optimus122

It was just a little too similar to T2 but it did push the story foward and had some good action. The only thing I didn't like was the continuation of making the terminator into a less then totally fierce killing machine ( show me the hand , the elton john glasses etc ).

So Sarah had John when she was 14?

    by Drath

I guees there have been more rediculous age varations for parents and children in the movies. Connery being on six years older than Ford when he played Indiana Jones's dad. And Angela Lansbery was only a year older than the guy playing her son in the Manchurian Candidate. But still, would it have really killed them to get Linda Hamilton?

  • Feb. 10, 2007, 8:41 a.m. CST

    I bet they're discounting T3

    by performingmonkey

According to T3 it was only a few years after the events of T2 that Sarah Connor got cancer but she hung on as long as she could to make sure Judgement Day didn't happen on August 29th 1997. So to stay in Terminator canon (look at me using the word 'canon', I am officially an idiot) this has to be set pre-that date and it's highly doubtful they'll have Sarah with cancer in the series so I say they're just gonna throw T3 out the window. It's gonna be the alternative storyline to T3.

    by Col. Tigh-Fighter

A lot of hate out there. I know it wasn t perfect, but I thought it had loads of good stuff. I think the crain chase and crash is one of the great effects set pieces, and I think the ending is genuinly moving. I had know idea that the end would be so strong. <p> If done right, Glau could be great. Colour me interested!

    by vee8

T3 wasn't bad, just pointless. The story ended neatly and perfectly with T2. There was no need for T3, entertaining though it was. there is even less need for a series, and I agree, without the big guy it will fall flat on it's face.

So now she's a secret spy robot? Maybe they work together and things are awkward? Like every time Sarah Connor has a deadline the Terminator interfaces with her computer erases her work. Damn you Terminator! I stayed up all night on that report. That report would have changed the future.

    by Leto III

If they know what's good for the show, they'll keep T3's premise of Sarah Connor developing cancer, as it gives both the actress and character something halfway meaty to chew on as an arc, and I doubt that Lena Headey would've signed onto a show like this unless she was promised the chance to do some genuine emo-acting. 'Twould be great if they still retained T3 as the final end-point, and not create an alt-universe TV scenario (à la PLANET OF THE APES).

    Terrible idea...

    by I Hope You Die

Terminator 2 is one of a few films to feature a strong female character kicking ass who isn't completely unbelievable. Serenity is on the far, far opposite end of that scale.

  • Feb. 10, 2007, 1:58 p.m. CST

    by The_Deathticle

God, this whole TV series concept is horseshit from the get-go. As someone mentioned above, the series ended neatly with T2. Miles Dyson's work and all artifacts from the future were destroyed. T3 wasn't the suckfest that I was expecting, mainly due to some nice action setpieces, but story-wise it was far more contrived than T2. At least Cameron's story for T2 was plausible and worked. It skirts dangerously close to paradox here and there, but that's pretty much an inherent quality of time-travel stories. T3, on the other hand, really screws up the timeline and totally strains story credibility. Not to mention, it rehashes the whole killer/protector terminator conflict from T2 instead of going in a new direction. It was plausible that Skynet sent two terminators to different times to improve its odds of killing John. It's even plausible that John sent the reprogrammed Arnie after the T-1000. But now, for the same thing to be happening in a TV series set between T2 and T3... THEN it happens again when T3 comes around..... Rubbish. Too many damn trips back to that dried up well. A series set in the scorched Earth of the machine dominated future, with an adult John Connor leading the fight against Skynet, terminators, and the other killing machines.... THAT'S what we want to see if there has to be another Terminator story. Why don't the studios get this?

  • Feb. 10, 2007, 2:26 p.m. CST

T2 was an Arnie ego boost nothing more.

    by EvilWizardGlick

Arnold needed to redeem his character, bring it back from the robotic darkside and walk with the angels. Chuck Norris wanted something similar with the character Bruce Lee killed. Norris wanted a movie where the guy lives and does good. <p> They all get that fucking good guy hero thing going and want to remake their earlier works. But in the end it is only mental ego masturbation of the hollywood crowd mentality.

But little girls can't be terminators!

    by HellKing

I like women that can kick ass but Summer Glau? At least pick someone that looks like they can kick butt. I reserve judgement for now until I see it. Another thing... What's the point of the terminators all looking the same like Arnold. If Skynet had any intelligence, it would make them look different so they would be true infiltrators like they were design for in the first place.

  • Feb. 10, 2007, 3:13 p.m. CST

    Terminator "Canon"

    by Style_92

Only works if you consider only the first one canon. Even then, the pre-destination paradoxes make it iffy. add the second one, things get headache inducing. (Reese in the first one: "I went through immediatly after the terminator, then it was smashed. It's just him and me. ...and the other 2 terminators but that's not for another 13 years, so don't worry about it.") T3 makes things Migraine inducing, and trying to work in T2:3D is very dangerous, because then you're courting an aneurism. So a new series, set vaguely after the first movie and vaguely before the third, couldn't really fuck it up more than it is.

    Pros and cons of T3

    by performingmonkey

Let's face it, T3 was penned by fanboys, with half the talent of Cameron, who just wanted to setup T4 as the future war movie that supposedly 'everyone' wants to see (when will people realise that it's sometimes best when we either just see a glimpse of something - a la Cameron's future visions - or nothing at all. Look at Hannibal Rising, no-one needs to see shit that's just hinted at when we all know how the story ends up.) Also, Jonathan Mostow was NEVER going to pull something amazing out of the bag, and it really would have taken a truly AMAZING director to drag parts of this script out of the shit. Serious mistakes they made - toning down the violence level from T1/T2, having Ahnold as the protector again (we were promised he would turn evil, and he did but not properly and only for like 2 minutes of the movie with no lasting damage to anyone, he should have been blowing shit up, he even blew shit up in T2 and he was good all the way through!), Nick Stahl and Clare Danes doesn't bode well for the future of the human race, the invention of the exploding battery thing inside Ahnold's model, the ultra tech of the T-X (the T-1000 was far creepier), the CHEESEFEST that was the Skynet-taking-over scene (they think so little of the audience, trying to convince us of the whole 'y/n' thing to decide humanity's fate, and Skynet seems like just another cheesy program and not this ultimate supervirus thing that's setup in T1/T2, the T-X's control of vehicles (tell me again how she can physically steer a car remotely?). Things they got right - the humour (there needed to be a lot of humour because no-one was going to take this second sequel deadly serious), the ending (you all know it, it's very cool), the chase scene, the cemetery scene (hell, Dr. Silverman even shows up...), the backstory of Sarah's cancer, although John becoming some kind of generic 'drifter' is definitely something they should have dealt with better.

  • Feb. 10, 2007, 8:46 p.m. CST

    Well said, Deathticle and performingmonkey...

    by DarthCorleone

I agree with most of what those guys said, so take note, studio grunts who are scanning this talkback. My favorite aspects of T3 were the crane chase and the restroom fight, but two good action set pieces do not a good movie make. I also liked the T-800's new penchant for human psychoanalysis. And, yes, the ending was good. Hell, with all the grungy postapocalyptic stuff that has been getting decent ratings lately, you'd think it'd be obvious which direction they should take. It seems to me that's much more obvious material for a television series than a fourth movie, if that is the intended eventual home of that storyline. Too late now, I guess. Oh, and the thing that bothered me most about T3? That stupid scene where John Connor actually mistakes the new T800 for the one he knew in the previous movie - asking him why he didn't remember "hasta la vista, baby." John Connor is not an idiot. He saw his boyhood friend incinerated in molten metal. This line was obviously intended to clarify the situation for viewers who don't know how to pay attention. I guess putting yet another machine in the timeline for this Sarah Connor television show could have made him forget that Terminators could look like Arnold. Whatever...they might as well just throw out the mythos entirely and make this television series its own thing. Otherwise, it's not resembling plausible.

would be the "basic instinct route",where the terminator with advanced human psychology programs would try to seduce its target and then kill it in the sack-maybe it could have metallic teeth on its vagina? lol. Sexism aside, what would be the point in Skynet creating "female" terminators, when it would take more effort to do so, and broadly speaking be less intimidating? thats why T3 sucked. otherwise it could have been really really cool instead of just ok. There was something a bit off about watching arnie sadistically slapping this bint around.

    Just so long as...

...they use (judiciously) the classic mournful/bombastic Terminator music theme in this series--then I will at least give it a chance.

T2 was great and T3 was solid

    by Rupee88

T2 is one of the best action/sci-fi films ever. T3 was solidly entertaining...far from a masterpiece, but kinda cool

    T3 talkback

    by Rupee88

BTW, I remember the talkback for T3 on here was one of the most uniformly positive ones ever. Search for it if you don't believe me. It was a crowd pleaser film even though parts of it were absurd.

    People can change their minds

    by UMAGA

I know for a fact that I wasn't the only one who soured on T3 after the hype died down.

If there were a terminator that the Connors...

    by DarthCorleone

...didn't realize was a terminator - and it's a terminator that was sent to kill John, that's fairly ludicrous. A terminator wouldn't waste time with subterfuge beyond the superficial disguises to blend in. Once the terminator is within 10 feet of John, it should be going for the deathblow. Now, if Summer plays a Terminator sent to protect them (or just someone from the future sent to protect them), that would make marginally more sense to stay undercover (but not much, given that Sarah and John would have no reason to disbelieve based on their earlier experiences).

Maybe ibstead of only going forward to 2007...

    by fanboy71

They should go all the way to where (when) the human race is defeated, and stored in KY jelly so the machines can use their body heat as energy. Since we all KNOW that the Matrix is just a continuation of the Terminator series. Then they could run into Neo, Trinity, and the crew. I am tuning in to see how it plays out, and I like the idea of Glau as an infiltrator unit. Who says Terminators have to be big and muscular... the machines inside are doing all the work, not the muscles. And... Nathan Fillion as Hal Jordan would kick ass!

Whoever thinks T3 is better than T2...

    by PwnedByStallone

is remarkably stupid. That said T3 was ok just pointless and edging self parody as stated earlier. But the neding was interesting and the crane sequence was shockingly decent. It's just the idea of a female Terminator, who's less sophisticated than the T-1000 even is a fucking cheesy and idiotic. But the real reason I have to dislike it is that it undoes everything T2 did so well. T2 message was "there is no fate but we make for ourselves." T3 said our fate was pretty much out of our hands. It took a dump all over what Cameron had envisioned for the franchise.

@Son of Batman: Ben Browder is nice on paper . . .

    by SkidMarkedUndies

but not so appealing on set. He burns bridges where ever he goes. Give him long enough and he'll be trapped on an island with nowhere to turn to. 15 years ago, it would be a photo finish between Kurt Russell and Dennis Quaid, with Bruce Greenwood coming in a close third.

Cameron is used to having his work shat upon

    by CTU Mole

Alien3...everything in Aliens was pointless and was destroyed. T3...resistance is futile, the war happens anyway. I'm looking forward to Titanic: The Revenge where Zombie Jack comes alive to stalk and kill Rose.
