This year's Disney video releases (("masterpieces"))

Published at:  Mar 02, 1999 11:11:41 AM CST

Glen here...

...with some news about forthcoming Disney video release for this year. This information is sent
in by UNICORN, who apparently used its horn to carfully type the following information.

Here's some of what Unicorn had to say:

Unicorn wrote:

Seems like the plan is to release one major video every month,
just about all of them "masterpieces" ((Glen Note: the term "masterpiece" is, of course,
subjective..))

And, in the process,
to release the last few of the unreleased masterpieces in time
for the giant year-2000 "Millenium Collection" HREF="http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=2966">((CLICK HERE for Coaxial's
previous coverage of The Millennium Collection))

The only non-"masterpiece" I
see on the list so far is Pixar's "A Bug's Life".

BE AWARE: The info is still somewhat fluid, some changes may be made to the following list.

All of the titles listed below are VHS ((Glen Note: when we find out about DVDs, well mention
their release dates as well)):

Jan. 5, 1999 The Rescuers (post-recall re-release 3/23)

Feb. 2, 1999 Mulan (i.e. in stores now)

Mar. 9, 1999 101 Dalmations

Apr. 20, 1999 A Bug's Life

May. 25 1999 The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad

Summer? 1999 The Rescuers Down Under

Sep. 1999 Saludos Amigos (Masterpiece #6)

Oct. 1999 The Great Mouse Detective

Nov. 1999 Make Mine Music (Masterpiece #8)

Dec. 1999 Aladdin

The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad, Disney's 11th
animated masterpiece, tells the story of Ichabod Crane
in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, and the animated version
of the wild ride of Mr. Toad from The Wind in the Willows.
It will be the first time that the complete film has been
released on video, as well as the first video release for
two other masterpieces: Saludos Amigos and Make Mine
Music
.

the masters VERY carefully to avoid any Rescuers-type
problems which could lead to a costly (both in dollars
AND in publicity) recall such as Rescuers sufferred.

((Glen Note: does this mean some poor stooges somewhere are watching every movie,
frame-by-frame??? Good god...))

Also, if you enjoy collecting Disney movies, consider
"The Ultimate Guide To
Collecting Disney's Animated Masterpieces", which is at:

. Some of this info
is mirrored there, but not with as much detail...

Now, maybe I'm just a bit uninformed but, what is with the recall. Is it more porn thrown in for a few frames at a time?

"A Bugs Life" **IS** but "Great Mouse Detective" isn't

    by mckracken

"A Bug's Life" **WAS** a masterpiece. The only non-"masterpiece" I see on the list so far is Disney's "The Great Mouse Detective".

    Overlooked masterpieces

    by pope buck 1

I especially am looking forward to "Make Mine Music" and "Saludos Amigos" -- I only have crappy homemade copies off of the Disney Channel for these. I consider these two, plus "The Three Caballeros" and "Melody Time," to really be overlooked classics. They were treated as throwaways by the studio, and indeed they are wildly uneven in quality (being essentially collections of short subjects, with different creative teams for each one). But there is some STARTLINGLY BEAUTIFUL stuff on these, the artistic equal of anything in "Fantasia" or "Pinocchio." Witness the "Aquarela do Brasil" sequence in "Saludos," or "Baia" in "Three Caballeros." Stunning. Also, some of it (such as the whole "You Belong to My Heart" sequence from "3C") ranks among the trippiest psychedelia in Disney history, right up there with "Pink Elephants On Parade." While "Fantasia" became notorious during its '60s re-release as an ideal "trip movie," it was a wonder "Three Caballeros" isn't ranked right up there beside it. Makes you wonder if the Disney animators found time for some peyote rituals during their famous tour south of the border.

    Amigos/Music

    by robinp

Hmmmmmmmm, can't say I'd actually call either of these masterpieces. Like that other instant forgettable "So Dear To My Heart", maybe they'd benefit from having some porn slipped in.
Come on, it'd give us all something to talk about !!!!

    DISNEY calls them "masterpieces"

    by lamberts

The titles Unicorn is talking about are what *Disney* calls "Animated Masterpieces"...part of their marketing plan, no doubt. They used to be called "classics", and at other times the word "Masterpieces" was used more loosely (including the aformentioned "So Dear To My Heart" - which I've *never* seen or heard of until I began collecting Disneys for my son; also Mary Poppins has been called a "masterpiece" from time-to-time and is part of the "Masterpiece Collection" series...marked at the top of the spine by a particular logo. But the 36 animated features supposed to be in the Millenium Collection are the ones that _DISNEY_ officially call their "masterpieces". And, whatever you think of them, "The Great Mouse Detective" and "Oliver & Company" are included in that set...right in there with "Snow White" and "The Lion King"!! While Pixar's computer-animated "Toy Story" and "A Bug's Life" as well as other-style animations like "James & The Giant Peach" and "Nightmare Before Christmas" are not "masterpieces" any more than mixed live-action/animation films like "MP", "Bedknobs & Broomsticks", and "Pete's Dragon" are NOT among the 36! EVEN if they're part of the home-video series called "The Masterpiece Collection". Just ask Disney!! DAVE

    More on "Masterpieces"

    by lamberts

Just checked out the site Glen posted with Unicorn's list. It lists ALL 36 titles in the official Masterpiece set. Unicorn mentioned that Saludos Amigos is #6 and Make Mine Music is #8. But she left out that 101 Dalmations is #17, Mulan is #36, Rescuers is #23, Rescuers Down Under is #29, Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad is #11, Great Mouse Detective is #26, and Aladdin is #31. Go to the web site mentioned and see what others are on the list. The checklist one is GREAT! DAVE

    Aladdin in '99...

    by essemtee

...hey, they couldn't let that one slip by without re-releasing it with a redesigned video box cover and the word 'Masterpiece' above the title! (It's a 'Classic' at the moment!) It'll be out in December, so it'll make the perfect gift under the tree... except for those who already own it!! And it really doesn't need to be Digitally Remastered, it's fine as it is! I missed out on buying Beauty and The Beast on video the first time, will I have to wait til 2001 to purchase it again? It wasn't considered a 'Masterpiece' either! Just a 'Classic!'

    Where's the DVD

    by yellerdog

Look at this BS. Were these movies all originally full-screen? I don't believe so. Bound to be a decent ratio among them. I wouldn't mind having some Disney animation on DVD, but with their attitude of "release it now, wait a decade, release it again," I can state, with full confidence, screw Disney, they're not the only company out there. I think I'll go buy the "Kimba: The White Lion" DVD... heh.

    everything's a masterpiece!

    by zooty

i'm a lifelong fan of animation, good and bad, disney among many. and i've invested in laserdiscs of the disney animation that matters to me...helpful when my daughter wore out her first two tape copies of Little Mermaid. the only bootleg video i ever paid money for (star wars came in as a favor back in 1977) was Fantasia. but i've become increasingly annoyed at seeing everything disney puts out being hailed (by disney) as a masterpiece. i was always under the impression that an artist might produce a lifetime of good work, but only one masterpiece. the mouse's hype machine has rendered the word meaningless, even when it might be describing something that truly deserves it.

    Various Replies

    by lamberts

RE: "Beauty and the Beast"...the Ultimate List web site says that one will be back in *theatres* this spring, possibly as late as the summer. If it follows the same path Little Mermaid took, then a rerelease of the video will probably be in Jan or Feb 2000, eh? RE: "DVD's"...A Bug's Life (*not* one of the 36 cartoon-only masterpieces) is going to be out on DVD at the same time the VHS is released, per my local Disney store. So why is Disney holding off on DVD's of the 36? Can Unicorn or anyone else tell us that? Disney Store can't! I'd hate to have to buy them all at once in The Millenium Collection if I had a DVD player (looking into getting one soon); $1000 is a bit much to swallow in one gulp!! Maybe Diz will put out the collection and _then_ ship separate DVD's of them? RE: "Everything's A Masterpiece"...I can see where you're coming from. But to make a point: all the "masterpieces" on the listing of "THE 36" are CARTOON animations done with pencil-and-ink (and on recent titles some computer assistance but a classic look). But just because a Disney cartoon film is released in theatres doesn't make it a "masterpiece"; A Goofy Movie is NOT on the list of Masterpieces, nor is Ducktales: Treasure of the Lost Lamp, nor will the new Doug! movie be. It seems Disney bestows the designation of masterpiece onto films that are A) running 1st in theatres B)are cartoon animation C) & based on time-honored myths (Hercules, Sword in the Stone), poems (Mulan), folktales (Snow White, Beauty & The Beast), or children's books (101 Dalmations, Winnie the Pooh, Dumbo); even can be taken from plays (Peter Pan) or not-so-kids-books (Oliver & Company (based on Dickens) and Hunchback of Notre Dame). The web site w/the Ultimate List run by Jason O'Brien (good job, Jason!) shows that Diz has designated 4 new additions to the Masterpiece list to hit theatres between now and 2002: "Tarzan", "Fantasia 2000", "Kingdom of the Sun", and "Atlantis". So why isn't the AICN-mentioned Diz film "Treasure Planet" on this list? I can understand Toy Story 2 not being on the list, since TS & ABL isn't, and I can understand the Lady & Tramp direct-to-video sequel "Scamps Adventure" not being on the list. But why not "Treasure Planet"? Why not "Dinosaurs"? I guess the only answer lies deep within Disneys marketing department....

    The Ranger betrays his ignorance

    by stewdog

Disney is enforcing a monopoly on children's animated movies? I must say they're doing a piss-poor job of it. Have you seen Anastasia? Antz? Rugrats? Prince of Egypt? Have you even heard of them? As for 'you don't have a choice' I'm willing to bet that you choose not to buy any Disney movies at all!

    DISNEY MASTERPIECES

    by straycat

It sucks that all these movies are being re-re-released with all new THX sound, and cleaned up images and all this stuff. I for one have almost a complete collection except for the jewels that are being released this year for the first time and I'm not going to start my collection over again.
Disney obviously wants to make money out of VHS before CD technology like DVD wipes VHS out.
And I think Disney refers to their "masterpieces" as films that were primarily made by animation cels and good old hand drawing and painting.

    Disney Studio Collection

    by maniacalmichael

Did anyone else get the "Disney Studio Collection" offered last November by the Disney Stores? It consisted of three videos, "The Walt Disney Story"; "Frank & Ollie", a documentary about two of the nine old men; & the complete version of "The Reluctant Dragon". It was presented with no fanfare, supported only by those little cardboard placards by the registers. Asking any of the store's employees what films were included brought only blank stares & only the Disney Store catalog gave the titles of the films. It wasn't a bad buy for $30!

    Disney's DVDs

    by lamberts

So far, Disney's DVD issues seem to be their live-action fare for the most part, with Mary Poppins and Tron and the forthcoming A Bug's Life being the most "animated" issues, other than the direct-to-video "Beauty & the Beast: An Enchanted Christmas". The other DVD's include the Glenn Close version of 101 Dalmations, the forthcoming Mighty Joe Young (yanked right off the tip of someone's tongue!) , Flubber, the forthcoming 1998 version of Parent Trap, The Santa Clause, and Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas (also "animated", I must admit). No word at all if the "Big 36" will be put out on DVD anytime soon, but a quick call today to Walt Disney Home Video got me the info that in mid-May is the time they will finalize their list of scheduled home releases for the 2nd half of the year, VHS *and* DVD!

    Forgot a DVD!

    by lamberts

While mentioning the Disney DVD's in my last post I forgot to put down "Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey". According to DVDEXPRESS.COM, these are ALL the titles Disney has or is about to release on DVD. On a separate note, going back to the post "Roll Up! Roll Up!", I have to agree that Disney is *excellent* at manipulating the market and the consumers. A way to point this up: has anyone but me noticed that the VHS re-release of the animated 101 Dalmations will be for 101 days only? That's just 3

In order for satire to be effective, it has to have an element of truth to it. If you don't like Disney movies, that's your choice, but spouting bald-faced lies under the guise of (weak) humor is no way to discredit a company. Besides, I do have a sense of humor. Have you heard this one? Three bad comedians walk into a bar, and one of them says...
