SWEEPS DAY EIGHT!! New OFFICE!! OC!! SILVERMAN!!

Published at:  Feb 08, 2007 3:15:17 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

A little quick plugging for three of my favorite Thursday-night stories, all of which are new because of this “sweeps” thing everybody keeps talking about.

1) “The Office” continues the saga of Phyllis’ nuptials. Note that “Lost” creator J.J. Abrams and “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” creator Joss Whedon are supposed to have directed February episodes, and there are only three Thursdays left in February. 8:30 p.m. Thursday. NBC.

2) “The OC” is down to its last three episodes ever. If I’m not mistaken, tonight brings a big earthquake, next Thursday brings the earthquake’s aftermath, and the Thursday after that – set six months later - brings maybe the lawful joining of comic-book geek Seth Cohen and comely girlfriend Summer Roberts? 9 p.m. Thursday. Fox.

3) Comedy Central is airing its hilarious second episode of “The Sarah Silverman Program,” which guest stars Zach Galifianakis as a troubled homeless man. This is the one with the queefing. This is the best live-action sitcom transmitting new episodes right now, I shit you not. 10:30 p.m. Thursday. Comedy Central.

Season Sets Under $20!!

    Silverman numbing effect

    by enigmatypus

Is it just me or is this show aimed at people who almost can't handle this kind of humor? Perhaps it's for people that could never speak like this amongst their friends. I like to think that I'm quite open to comedy... I loved Arrested Development, I love the Office, and I also love the lower brow shock stuff (when done right). I also happen to be a pretty big Sarah Silverman fan. So why is it that I feel like this show is too hollow? It's the shit-humor without the wit to back it up. Again, maybe as a person who might need more from a show than jokes he can make with his friends at any time, I may not be the intended target, but I sure was hoping to be.

sarah is annoying on her show, but still hilarious

it's strange how she's still endearing whereas if one of my friends was like that i'd punch them in the dick.

I still don't get the hype around Sarah, a average looking bird who has a potty mouth. I have seen the show and thought it tried far too hard to be low brow and had little point to it.

Best Live Action Sitcom after one episode?

I mean it was 15,000 times funnier than Jesus is Magic but I think that might be a little grandios.

    first episodes suck

    by scratcher

You know how sitcoms usually take awhile to settle in and find the correct forumula? Like Seinfeld, for instance? Sarah is great, and the first episode was hilarious in parts (in jail, for instance, or what she learned about black women), but uneven. I think the main problem so far is that she overshadows the rest of the cast. And maybe that she's being forced to play dumb, which doesn't really fit her image.

    Sorry, I hate Silverman's program....

    by eppdude

She's like an over-grown 7-year-old on the show. It's like she should be on medication. I really do not understand the appeal.
And to say this show is better than The Office is just plain lunacy. In fact, all of NBC's Thursday night lineup is funnier than Silverman's show.

    Not ALL first episodes suck...

    by danielkurland

Arrested Development's pilot was the same quality of all the rest, and doesn't have any glaring differences (besides the attic stairs) that make people groan when watching a pilot on TV. Like in Seinfeld how they were at that pirate-like diner. Also, I suppose it makes sense to have Phyllis' wedding episode right after her bachelor party one, but it seems a little rushed for the Office, I don't know, like they couldn't think of any other ideas.

    by geekzapoppin

But it's pretty damned funny. It's the most I've laughed out loud at the television in a long time. I still think it has room to improve, but it's off to a helluva start. Ms. Silverman definitely brings teh funny.

    by kusoyaro

I love Sarah Silverman and was looking forward to the show, but I downloaded the free episode that was on XBox Live, and it was just terrible. It was like a kid's show, but with random, out-of-the-blue crude references (which I don't mind at all if done right). Bring back Arrested Development :(

Fuck the OC. And fuck the actual southern california county that the show is based upon. I hate that shit-hole of a place. Am I the only one who is happy that the OC is leaving the airwaves so it can make room for a quality show that FOX will drop after 6 episodes so it can air more American Idol specials?

Why not? Herc proclaimed that about 30 Rock every time he posted something about it. Which its still not true so long as The Office is currently airing. Not to demean 30 Rock because I do think its gotten better and was never terrible or plain not funny but it has a ways to go to be considered in the same league as The Office.

    by heckles

Serious, that naked hick and what's-his-nuts show is funnier than this piece. Surely Silverman's agent has a slew of scripts needing an "abrasive, smart-ass sidekick friend to the leading female role" she can read and eventually make the movie worse because she's in it. We're talking about someone kicked off SNL during one of its worst seasons. When does Siobhan Fallon get a show? At least she was on SNL during a good season.

I think 30 Rock is one of the funniest shows to come around in a while, I love the Office, and love even more that they let the cast settle in and take it in a different direction. That said, I loved the Sarah Silverman whacked out on cough syrup sequence last week, and Zack is comedy gold.

    Scrubs!!

    by darth_nader

Seriously, after the last couple of weeks we need to start getting Scrubs back into the talkbacks. Scrubs is definitely turning in a new direction, and is getting better by the week. JD's girlfriend's first news made me say holy crap, then the final act kicked it up a notch. If this does end up being the last season (which I hope not!), it's ending strong. Story arcs are much better thought out, and the drama isn't as schmaltzy as it was before. Also the constant in references on the show are paying off for long time viewers ("I got Turk!").

No way is she the most fuckable woman on Thursday night. She is extremely fuckable, of course. Sarah is extremely hot to me. But you are putting her up against Jaime Pressly, Nadine Velasquez, that chick that plays Karen, the chick that plays Kelly, Sarah Chalke, the chick that plays Carla, and the chick that plays Pam.

Depending on taste, Silverman beats a few of these ladies, but no way she beats em all.
