Drop A Hit, Follow The Link, And Let Your Mind Flow ACROSS THE UNIVERSE!!

Published at:  Feb 03, 2007 2:24:16 AM CST

You know why I enjoy having my buddy Flmlvr as a friend so much?

Because sometimes, it’s important to know what 14-year-old girls are excited about in the world of film, and no one is more in touch with the taste of 14-year-old girls than Flmlvr.

Not even Herc.

Tonight, I got an e-mail from Flmlvr that contained a link to a trailer that I’ve been waiting to see for a while now. I think Julie Taymor’s a heck of a filmmaker and an interesting visual artist in general. I’m not sure what I expected from her take on the Beatles catalog...

... but it wasn’t this.

It’s a little bit HAIR. It’s a little bit MOULIN ROUGE. It looks beautiful. But those songs carry such an emotional punch on their own that Taymor’s got to hope that she can contextualize them in a whole new way. Can we hear these songs again for the very first time? Can she make them feel fresh?

Time will tell, but for now, enjoy your first look at ACROSS THE UNIVERSE.

    by welbrick

i look forward to taymor's movies, but am inevitably disapointed. the deck is stacked especially high against her here; trying to create a cinematic vision that deserves the beatles' catalogue is a nearly insurmountable task. i can't deny that she's got balls in trying. though.

I just finished watching "Let It Be" on YouTube,....

    by lhombresiniestro

and remembered why I loved the Beatles so much....and now I'm subjected to this? His name's JUDE? HOW CLEVER!!! At least Maxwell wouldn't have been so obvious. And if they followed that song's storyline, it'd be a pretty badass movie. Usually, I'm not the bitchy whiny person on this board, but come the fuck on. It's "Sgt. Peppers" with a big budget and cuter actors.

    by industrykiller!

I dunno. It seems like it could go down the road of sap preeeeetty easily. It looks like it may have been better without actually being a musical. I'll definitely see it, Taymor is certainly an artist through and through and even if she fails it will be a beautiful failure.

Taymour is 1 of the most interesting directors working

    by chief redcock

Titus is a personal fave of mine, and I enjoyed Frida too (though it needed a bit more of Taymour's visual style). I'm sure this will be excellent... Taymour thrives on visual overload and spectacle, but she also knows how to take it to a very real place, and she has a great sense of character development. No question in my mind, this will be great.

    Across the Universe

    by bdt

I am sure this is NOT news to most Beatles fans, but Across the Universe is a reference to the Beatles' TM experience. Recently got a glimpse into this world again as David Lynch is talking a lot about TM with his new book and touring with his movie, Inland Empire.

    lame beatles covers...

    by jccalhoun

Wow, the covers of the songs in this trailer are as lame as the ones in those damn Target commercials. I think the idea of using one band's catalog as the soundtrack for a film is interesting, but either use the actual song (which the actual Beatles probably wouldn't allow) or cover the songs in such a way that they don't sound like overwrought Muzak. I am not looking forward to seeing the trailer for this movie appear on tv a million times.

Michael Jackson gets even richer! Or, at least,

    by creasybear

he recoups some of the dough spent on recent legal fees. I think I heard that Jackson bought the rights to the Beatles songs, so doesn't he get the profits? And also from the new Target ads. "Let your money earn money" indeed.

    by henrydalton

Keep the second, and that's be best trailer I've seen this year so far.

Seriously, that first half almost kills it. Awful Moulin Rouge rip-off starting line, generic 'college romance' montage. But from the halfway point onwards... I had to watch that again, it was like I suddenly switched to watching a much, much more interesting film. Looking forward to this one now.

Best Beatles sone ever. Why? close your eyes and listen to the Coda...It sounds like early Black Sabbath. The Beatles accidentally stumbled into Heavy Metal. Also, Taymor's 'Titus' was amazing but 'Freda'(I think) was dog shit. This looks amazing and corny. Hippies ruin everything. Thank you.

    Trailers Never Tell

    by ptf-b

I'm a huge Beatles fan. Just had my first kid. Named her Eleanor. Jude would have been the boy's name. Don't clown on people naming children (or characters) in this way. I'll beat your ass. Anyway, as a huge, critical Beatles fan, I think the combo of Taymor and Beatles looks quite interesting, although the lead actor wouldn't have been my first choice (too pretty). Trailers never do films justice anymore, so I'll wait to see it in its entirety. If it works, it will be one sweet flick. If it is too cheesy or sappy, I'll probably hate it. The visuals look awesome, though. Having enjoyed all of Taymor's previous work, I have hope that she'll keep it dark enough to be good. Titus was nasy, baby. But this is PG-13, so who knows.

    Man, those were the days.
This whole Beatles thing has been done before, Wes Anderson has already done the whole British invasion thing and the plot looks like something I've seen about 100 times so why should I give a darn? The trailer's second half looked interesting but if it's only there to pad a lame story then who cares.

of white, middleclass suburbanites who drop out and become hippies. How original and ingenious. Throw in a teenybopper romance subplot and you have a veritible clichefest. Taymor may be a visual wizard, but all the pretty pictures and pretty people can't change the fact that this is looks like a hackneyed cartoon of a story.

...with images of World War II instead of Vietnam. Then they'd really have something original. In other words, youngsters, it's been tried before, not just that lame Bee Gees/Frampton slopfest (which damaged their careers, not advanced them).

P.S. How much you want to bet "She's Leaving Home" will accompany the scene preceding that empty apartment? If there's a Michelle, Julia, Martha, or Eleanor Rigby in this movie, I'll have to choke back the acid reflux.

It's great to see that man getting some solid acting work. You know, besides fucking 'Blueberry'. This week I scored a copy of the pilot to his new FX series at work. The pilot I saw was called "Low Life", which I think has since been renamed "The Riches". It stars he and Minnie Driver (who I've never cared for, but is phenomenal as a cough syrup addict in this) as the parents of a morally blank family of gypsies. So long as they don't do a pre-broadcast overhaul, it is the most promising pilot I've seen in years.

As people have commented earlier, the first half is kind of subtle, plying you with beatles hits you know, lulling you into a sense that you know what's going on and then smashing you across the face with the beauty that is the last few seconds of the trailer as the world comes apart. Fucking awesome.
