Tonight!! Bill Helps Dave Celebrate A Quarter Century in Late Night!!

Published at:  Feb 01, 2007 1:09:50 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Bill Murray and David Letterman appear together with surprising infrequency. Since Letterman’s show debuted on CBS 13 years ago, Murray has guested only five times, most recently in 2004.

Having said this, we are obliged to point out that Murray does appear in some of the most important installments, notably the first episode of NBC’s “Late Night With David Letterman” in 1982 and the first episode of CBS’ “The Late Show With David Letterman” in 1993.

From a CBS press release:

On Feb. 1, 1982, David Letterman hit the stage of "Late Night with David Letterman" and that night, single-handedly changed the face of late night television forever. Now, 25 years later, Letterman continues to set the standard in late night. With 4,506 broadcasts, 14,772 guest appearances, 14 Emmy Awards and 89 Emmy nominations to his credit, Letterman and his late night programs, "Late Night with David Letterman" and the LATE SHOW with DAVID LETTERMAN, are ranked among the best and most innovative television programs in the history of broadcasting. Other than the late Johnny Carson, who hosted "The Tonight Show" for 30 years, no other late night host comes near Letterman in longevity, critical praise and award recognition.

After spending 11 1/2 years at "Late Night with David Letterman," Letterman moved his show to the CBS Television Network on Aug. 30, 1993 and instantly created an immensely successful late night franchise for the Network. Now in its 14th season on CBS, the LATE SHOW continues to shine: the CBS late night broadcast alone has been honored with nine Emmy Awards, 54 Emmy nominations and countless other accolades and critical acclaim for its original and inventive comedy, newsmaking guests and cutting-edge musical performances.

What does the always well-prepared Murray have up his sleeve tonight? From someone who caught last week’s taping:

He comes out in a tux with a top hat and a bottle of champagne... then he enlists Dave's help to try and procure Super Bowl tickets...

    Not Accurate

    by bungion boy

He has been on more than 5 times and the most recenet time was not 2004. He was on in 2005 to promote Broken Flowers. Add that to the two times he was on in 2004 to promote Garfield and The Life Aquatic, plus the premiere episode, the first CBS episode, that's 5 right there. I know he's been on more than that. Pretty sure he came on to promote Rushmore. I'm an avid Late Show viewer and I've seen him on at least a few more times. Can't wait to see it tomorrow.

...he took with Dave was hysterical. Bill hired some fake family to come on the show with him, and then they all put on Santa hats and posed in this weird human pyramid for Bill's Xmas card picture. Biff took the pic, and man, I'd kill for a copy.

    Holy shit -- 13 YEARS??

    by theseeker7

Damn. I can't believe it's been that long. I still remember watching that very first CBS show like it was, yep, yesterday. Bill coming out on stage all out of breath, saying he'd gone to "the other place" by mistake. GREAT fucking entrance (& who forget Paul Newman standing up from within the audience and asking the now classic line, "Where the hell are the singing cats?" as he does his cool little point-and-shoot gesture at the fans). Fuck, I still even recall pretty clearly the 2nd show where Dave went back to the tape and went over all the ways in which he felt he fucked up in the 1st one. LOL But this is fantastic. Dave has always been and WILL always be king, and Bill Murray is nothing less than a GOD amongst men. Happy Anniversary Dave, can't wait to see this.

i wasn't aware it was so infrequent. I know whenever Letterman has re-runs the murray guest appearances get replayed. Anyone remember when he showed up wearing a clown outfit?

    by rosielarose

is beyond me. That show has THE lowest comedy denominator of anything on broadcast television - save anything with "The Blue Collar..." in the title. Leno is a hack. Long live Dave.

I liked Dave in his NBC days; now he acts like an overpaid pissant. Yes, Dave, we get it..you hate George W. Bush. You and the rest of Hollywood and half the free world. Try to be entertaining once in a while.

    by kinghenryviii

Kinda bummed about that. Bill is the funniest fucker out there, minus the Garfeild movies ..... whince and shiver at that move, BUT, Quick Change will always hold a place in my heart as comic gold. "Blufftuni, blufftuni" "They left on a blufftuni". Even though Murry didn't say those lines, they crack me up.

    by zarles

He was hacking up a lung for the better part of last week, so I think he took a few days off. I'm glad he's back for this one, though. Aside from some basketball player, Bill is his only guest. Should be good.

Oh my god that's right, I'd totally forgotten about that until you just said it. Murray's appearance literally from the gutter after the Oscars was fucking golden. I remember that now. Oh yea and while I'm at it -- Leno is unwatchable dreck, he is hands down the worst interviewer of all time, and yep "QUICK CHANGE" is one of the most underrated comedies of the last 20 years. "What kind of clown are you?" "The sad kind.".... "Is that our plane?" "No, if it was OUR plane it would be exploding right now."

Always felt for him since I saw The Late Shift on HBO. Probably just before I stayed up late to watch a Shannon Tweed movie where she plays some sort of psychotherapist that has some sort of practice involving fucking her patients. Ahh, '90s HBO.

    Or what about the time...

    by zarles

...he was on right around when Tom Cruise went apeshit on Oprah's couch? Bill made an appearance on Dave, stood on one of the chairs next to Dave's desk, and announced that he, too, was in love with Katie Holmes. Dave's attempt to talk him down and to explain that that's just not how it works was priceless. Anyone that insists Bill's not funny anymore now that he doesn't fall down or whatever is a fucking idiot. The man's gotta be pushing 60, and he's damn near in his prime. I've been watching his movies since I was a pre-teen, for chrissakes...

I remember the very first shows, which means I'm old as fuck. Remember all the classic bits? Toast on a stick... the giant doorknob (It's just plain big!)... the Fugitive Guy... smashing stuff... crushing stuff... blowing stuff up... elevator races. Dear god, that was my childhood. Mortality is a bitch!
