Things are hopping on Baz Luhrmann's AUSTRALIA!

Published at:  Jan 26, 2007 1:31:18 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... I don't have a lot of love for 20th Century Fox and their output of late, but even a carbunkle like me has to admit things seem to be looking, at least, interesting in the House of Rothman. The once dreary concept of a sequel to FANTASTIC FOUR - seems to at least have a silvery glimmer of a reason to be hopeful. Then there's the awe and wonder that will one day be unleashed like the Kraken upon cinema screens... yes, James Cameron's AVATAR.

However, one of the most exciting prospects is... another Baz Luhrmann film. It's a shame that his ALEXANDER has joined the famed "where'd it go" bird, the DoDo. But when he was talking about that film - he was talking of an "EPIC TRILOGY" that he was wanting to embark upon.

Here - he's telling an epic story that follows, "an English aristocrat (Kidman) who inherits a sprawling ranch and reluctantly pacts with a cattle driver (Jackman) to protect her new property from a takeover plot. As the pair drive 2,000 head of cattle over unforgiving landscape, they experience the bombing of Darwin by Japanese forces." - according to The Hollywood Reporter

The film is set to star Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman as a pair - plotting to save her vast estate - and David Wenham is playing the "moderate bad guy" that wants her land. Of course, I'm betting all that amounts to a hill of beans once the Japanese begin bombing away - which should make for one helluva third act.

BUT - think about this... this won't be like Baz's previous films - he's wanting to strike out in a new cinematic journey. Gone will be the red curtain cinema we love. Personally - I'm incredibly excited by this new direction for Baz and his cinematic ambitions.

Like the movie outline. Kidman and Jackman? Okay. I'll watch Luhrman make an 'epic' trilogy. His 'Red Curtain' stuff was great. I wanna see Australia as a love letter to his homeland through kicking koala and taking didgereedoos.

I'm just glad Russell Crowe dropped out.

Hugh Jackman is a much better leading man. I just hope this isn't at all like the cheesy "Thorn Birds." Gotta say, love me some David Wenham, so it's all good.

    No more red curtain?

    by fryman86

While there is certaintly nothing wrong with trying something new, Baz's previous films all had some element to them, be it old english with modern visuals and actions, or turn of the century musical with contemporary song lyrics, that made you think, "I should check this out to see what it's up too..." Now, while Baz has certaintly gained my respect and I will pay his work attention, I'm wondering why there isn't really a "hook" this time around...

If I want to see Hugh-san and Wenham again, I'd rather see the next "Van Helsing". Come on, I'd rather see more of Friar Carl.
