AVATAR!! MORK!!MARY HARTMAN!! MARY HARTMAN!! Herc’s Season-Box DVD Vault!!

Published at:  Jan 29, 2007 1:43:24 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Though Nickelodeon only started transmitting Avatar: The Last Airbender less than two years ago, M. Night Shyamalan has already announced that he is mounting a series of three live-action movies based on the highly-rated franchise.

Though animated in Korea, it’s actually an American production originating in Burbank, Calif. AICN’s own Moriarty says of the new set streeting today:

… this show is smartly designed, and it’s written smart. There’s no talking down to an audience, at least not in the episodes I saw. … I was able to pick up with the first episode of season two and not feel like I was really missing anything. … the closest thing I’ve ever seen to Miyazaki on television. … It’s not an expensive show, but it’s so smartly stylized that the inexpensive animation never comes across as a negative. The show definitely has a sense of humor, but it also has some thrilling action scenes that are not just place-holders. There’s a sense that the show really is progressing, that these characters are growing. It’s all heading somewhere, and isn’t just some stagnant meandering repetition of a basic formula. None of the five episodes I saw struck me as being the same story, and that’s rare enough with this sort of program.

Read Moriarty’s entire review of the set here.

Hopeless Pictures, also streeting today, is a zippy semi-improvisational 9-episode animated sitcom from the Independent Film Channel. It's about Mel Wax, the head of an independent film studio. Multi-episode arcs deal with an attempted hostile takeover, an out-of-control overseas production, and the collapse of Wax’s marriage. It stars Michael McKean, Jennifer Coolidge and Bob Balaban - three actors who have appeared in all of Christopher Guest’s fauz-documentaries – with support from Jonathan Katz (playing a professional therapist), Lisa Kudrow, Buck Henry, Martin Mull, Jerry Stiller, Anne Meara, John Michael Higgins, Paul Dooley, Emmy Laybourne, David L. Lander, Nora Ephron, Rob Reiner, Paul Weitz andPaul Reubens.

You can buy Walker: Texas Ranger: The Complete Second Season, strap your DVD remote on a giant lever, and pretend you’re Conan O’Brien as you call up random scenes.

This completely awful martial-arts actioner was co-created by Paul Haggis, who wrote on tons of awful TV (“The Love Boat,” “Diff’rent Strokes,” “Who’s The Boss,” “Michael Hayes,” “Family Law”) for the first 50 years of his life, then went on to write two Oscar-winning scripts (“Million Dollar Baby” and “Crash”), as well as “Casino Royale,” “Flags of Our Fathers” and “Letters From Iwo Jima.”

    Fernwood 2 Night

    by geekzapoppin

I doubt we'll ever see FERNWOOD on DVD for the same reason we'll never see WKRP: music rights. Both shows were pure genius and both liberally used commercial music since home video wasn't even around when they were produced. The fact that very few people really remember either one (though more remember WKRP than FERNWOOD) means that the chances of seeing either are slim to none.

    WKRP

    by legokenobi

i bought a bootleg set of WKRP discs from a guy online a few months ago -- all 90+ episodes, all original music, no commercials. granted, they look just like what they are -- dubbed from vhs tapes made in the 70s & 80s, but for $20 it was well worth the money. they will never release them on DVD because the licensing of the music would cost a fortune, so bootlegs are the only way to get that sweet WKRP fix.

...would have been J. Jonah Jameson with Robert Guillome (sic) at his side as Joe "Robbie" Robertson. I always liked the idea of Telly Savallas as The Kingpin, but in the time that such a cast would have been possible (early to mid 90s), the CGI would not have been good enough to make him look 500 lbs realistically. But then again, Nikki Cox would have made a fine Mary Jane Watson back then.

I'm surprised at how little press Avatar gets on this site. If this cartoon was made 20 years ago M. Night Shamalayn making the series into a movie would be the biggest thing since Peter Jackson and LotR. Fellow adult geeks: I recommend you check this show out. Watch a few episodes from the first and second seasons. The show has a more intricate story line and character development than 24 and Lost put together. It puts other "top adult" shows to shame.
