RE-ANIMATOR Reunion!! A Glowing Review For Tonight’s MASTERS OF HORROR!!

Published at:  Jan 20, 2007 7:58:02 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

More than two decades after “Re-Animator,” writer-director Stuart Gordon, screenwriter Dennis Paoli and actor Jeffrey Combs are apparently still cranking out the coolness. Here’s “subpardaemon”:

you may want to post it, it's up to your discretion. Keep up the great work!

masters of horror: the black cat (d: stuart gordon, sp: stuart gordon & dennis paoli)

while stuart gordon's body of work has been largely hit-and-miss, this episode by him definitely delivers. in all, it may even be his best work yet -- low-key yet haunting, slow-paced yet tight as a drum, with a surprisingly confident mix of chills and art-house sensibilities.

despite the commonly held belief, poe was much more a master of macabre than a pioneer of horror (which one of poe's avid admirers, lovecraft was a true pioneer of), and gordon's low-key approach here fits this macabre like a glove.

from the subtle use of colors (dull, grayish tones with the exception of sharp red tints for blood and red wine and green for the titular cat's glowing eyes), through the aptly twisted screenplay by paoli and gordon (based on, of course, poe's original story), outstanding acting (a much-welcome reunion with classic gordon star jeffrey combs, who turns in a convincing, haunting performance as poe; the other actors are just as great in their supporting roles) and the period music, this episode is definitely a highlight of this much-criticized anthology series, and just as well a playful tribute to a man whose body of work laid the foundations for much of today's suspense, macabre and, well, horror.

while last year's lovecraft adaption was decent yet missing the mark of greatness, this season's outing by gordon shows that there is indeed potential both in the series and gordon himself. (give the man a decent budget and no pressure and let him handle the case of charles dexter ward next season (if there is one); this episode just proved that he is up to the task of filming a lovecraft adaptation as a period piece.)

although this season got off to a slow start (ah, the abomination that is pro-life; however, family was a riot), the recent episodes (valerie on the stairs, the screwfly solution, right to die) made me change my mind which was about to write off this series for good. there is still life in it, even if it is more like... undead.

12:30 a.m. (Early) Sunday. Showtime.

Best moment in the series: Julia Anderson's gorgeous natural cans in the hot tub scene in 'Right To Die'.

    I AGREE!

    by vwantsrevenge

It was very good, and one of the best, if not THE BEST, episode of the series this year. I love Jeffrey Combs and want to see him more, but this ep was solid from the music, to the acting, to the directing, the gore and the end. See it!

    It was ok

    by dynamixro

Combs can be a really good actor if you give him the right part. I liked how the episode incorporated some of Poe's most atmospheric horror stories but I think that it tried to fit in too much in just one hour. The result was still pretty good. It's nice to see something else than gratuitous T&A and gore. "We All Scream For Ice Cream" tried the same but it just didn't do it for me. The last two episodes seem interesting as well.

    SUBTLE use of colours...?

    by brendon

That is by no means a SUBTLE use of colours. For a subtle use of colours look at... er...

Well, Brazil, of course. Reservoir Dogs. Garfield.

    Yes, Garfiled.

Just NOT this ep. of Masters of Horror.

Too close to a "Tales From the Crypt" vibe for me

    by carmillavondoom

I love horror as much as or more than anybody, but the 'humor' and
    HEAVY-handed political allegories
on this series have made it a must-NOT see for me. Gave it way,
way too many chances. Still waiting for a REAL horror series.

I am amazed. A tight story,

    by immortal_fish

I am amazed. A tight story, lacking overt humor, pop-culture, and leftist political bias. It was only what it was, with homages aplenty to Poe's work, despite this being an interpretation of his source material. Combs was nearly unrecognizable and I hadn't a clue that the team behind Re-Animator engineered this episode. THIS is how MoH should be. Color me more than impressed!

    SHOWTIME presents

    by bannedontherun

A bunch of directors, some of whom once made a half-decent movie. Was it "Pirhanas" or "Gremlins" that makes Joe Dante a master of horror?

Joe Dante was more a Master of Police Squad! (In Color)

    by 2for2true

His episode was probably the best of the fantastic six. Too bad he felt the need to go into schlockly horror. He shoulda gone to see Johnny the shoeshine boy for advice on his career. Ditto Charley Pride.

So far I've been 100% disappointed in the "masters"

    by trazadone

What should've been a slam dunk idea has turned into a pretty disappointing product. Granted I've only seen the first season, but nothing I saw warranted the "master" title. Also, I'm completely disgusted that this series is being released on DVD once episode at a time rather than a complete season set. That would be like selling each episode of The Twilight Zone separately. What a way to ream fans. Thank God for Netflix and my ability to copy DVDs.

    Try reading a book

    by saint6

you might like it. Skip these Masters of Horror, almost all of which have been boring. I recently picked up Horror's Classic Masters written by Kurt Michael, thanks in part to Frank Bascombe's review and reviews on horrorweb and horror-world. Good stuff.

Thanks for the reading recommendation, I think I'm going to pick it up today.I agree with you, MOH has been boring. Every episode that I've seen could be cut down to 30 minutes.

Someone popped an HD letterboxed rip of it to the newsgroups a while back. Supposedly from cable, etc. It is just crazy as I remembered...and twice as creepy. haha.

I wanted Poe's girl to die so badly

    by sit and watch

so I wouldn't have to see her cough up blood again. It really is a fucked up show. I love it. I wouldn't say that it is a great show and reccomend it to everyone I know, but I sure do appreciate it. Whether it is a good episode or not, it is interesting to see what these talents do with an hour of tv.

Nice to see someone else on AICN interested in reading books. I was really disappointed in the first episode of MOH, Incident on and off a Mountain Road. The original short story by Joe R Lansdale is in his collection called Writers of the Purple Rage, and it kicks ass. The MOH episode was 95% watered down and 5% sensationalist carnage.
