The CW: No Final Arc For VERONICA MARS!!

Published at:  Jan 20, 2007 10:17:00 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

“Veronica Mars” returns with new episodes on Tuesday, but following February sweeps will disappear again for eight weeks, to be replaced by the reality series "Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll."

When “Mars” returns with its final five episodes, there apparently will be no final multiepisode story-arc to end its first season on the CW. From USA Today:

Veronica Mars, which now airs in [the Pussycat Dolls] spot, will take a breather then return for five non-serialized episodes — a first for that series — to finish out the season.

To anticipate the question, there is not yet word on whether “Mars” will get a fourth season. The CW, like all the other broadcast networks, announces its fall slate in mid-May.

In other CW news announced at the netlet’s Television Critics Association presentation:

* “7th Heaven” does not look likely to be renewed for another season.

* Unlike fellow UPN immigrant “Mars,” “Everybody Hates Chris” just got a 22-episode order for next season.

* “Hidden Palms,” the new series from “Dawson’s Creek” mastermind Kevin Williamson, may get bumped from midseason to summer.

* “America’s Top Model” returns on Feb. 28.

* The netlet is developing a beauty-contest reality series and a family drama that would be set and filmed in South Africa.

Give me a solid scripted show anyday and VM is one of the best we have. This better stay. The CW need not turn into UPN 2. Urban reality shows for all!

    This season has sucked...

    by johnnyangel

Shows usually don't make the transition from the high school years to the college years successfully, and Veronica Mars has been no exception. The sadness and poignancy of being an outcast in high school is impossible to recreate in college because no one knows or cares who you are in college. High school is forced on us all. College is a voluntary experience. High school is about physical and emotional maturation. College is about getting a grip on the future. High school is a small enclosed social vacuum, a darwinian experiment, college is a huge sprawling labyrinth with many doors and passages and countless opportunities. The angst of high school does not translate to the angst of college which is a separate angst of extreme mental struggle and exhaustion. Even the great BtVS did not make the cut to college. The Buffy college years sucked like a vampire with the only good stuff being outside the college experience, ie the neutered Spike, etc. IMHO, Buffy did not hit her stride again until she dropped out of college and was relegated to a lower class existence at the hamburger place. Now that was poignant. So, I think Veronica should do the same, drop out of college and work cases part time while supporting herself as a stripper.

    by danielkurland

I DON'T want it renewed. I love this show a huge amount, but if Thomas has decided to go in this non-arc direction, and he's stated that season four will be ALL standalones, then maybe I don't want it on the air. The show was great because of those huge payoffs at the end of the season, and I feel that with relatively "unimportant" episodes maing up a season, the quality will drop, like an Alias Season 4 type thing, which I do not want to happen. This is so disappointing especially since Thomas had stated that Mac and Wallace would be be the main people in the third arc this season. It's a sad thing that so many people's artistic visions need to be compromised for ratings. I suppose if anyone could make singular stories work, it'd be Thomas, but what's the fucking point now? You can only watch so many episodes about a musician getting his guitar stolen, an unfaithful spouse, the team cheerleader being framed by the homecoming queen until you stop caring. I need more huge reveals, that's why I gave this show a chance.

Honestly, after reading this, I'm not AS pessimistic towards the standalone idea, and a 4th season of pure standalones may not happen, depending on how these final five are received. Also, in retrospect, Angel season 5 was more or less all standalones, and they worked really well, so you never know....Most interesting tidbit: Michael Cera, if he didn't have scheduling conflicts would have played the "Moe" character, and therefore been one of the rapists!

The fact that the show is being bumped for another edition of some reality show nightmare, (honestly, I wasn't aware of the first incarnation's existence) really tells you all you need to know about the future of things at the CW. I love VM, but honestly...I'm with DK's original reaction. Maybe it should just die rather than be compromised and ultimately just cancelled anyway. The whole thing just makes me ill.

Only the ending of Angel season 5 had a true arc, and at that point they knew they were being cancelled, so they could do what they wanted. Sure, the first few are linked by the concept of Spike wanting to be corporeal/figuring out what to do with Wolfram and Hart, but come on, random necromancer, submarine vampires, Life of the Party....80 percent standalone here.

    by annoyyou

The subsequent two seasons of this show have demonstrated quite painfully that the great first season was an aberration. Cancel it already, CW -- Bell has been phoning in her performance since the beginning of S2, and the stupid storylines have shown that Thomas is bored with it. Let it die.

as you say, the initial one (5.1 to 5.4: figuring out W&H, spike's disappearances) and the illiyra one (5.14-5.22). i grant you that 5.5 to 5.13 were largely standalones but, by my admittedly bizarro maths, 9 standalones in a 21 ep season falls somewhere short of 'entirely'.

    Angel Season 5

    by shan

I think the season was deliberately not as tightly tied together as Season 4 but it was clearly setting up the major figures who were going to be the members of the Black Thorn all through it, like the Arch Duke and Izzy for example. I'm guessing the notice of the cancellation forced them to accelerate the last half of the season.

Maybe a good comparison could be the X-Files, a lot of the episodes you could follow with just knowing Mulder's the believer and Scully was the sceptic but small bits of information that really turned out to be big in the overall scheme of things appeared in a lot of the episodes, largely self contained or not. I thought Angel Season 5 was like that a bit.

    Indifferent over a S4

    by the selecter

I'd watch it if there was a S4, but at the same time, I wouldn't be too busted up if it didn't come back. I like the show, but the constant shuffling of the cast and changing themes takes away from it for me. Whether that's the fault of the network or Rob Thomas is irrelevant. I'd rather watch a show that is consistent and knows what it wants to be and where it wants to go, rather than always trying to gain some sort of footing it will never achieve (given the tastes of the TV mass audience that -will- watch crap like the Dolls show and American Idol).

I've loved this show since episode one and already this season has slipped a bit. What with every male character becoming kind of a pussy. Weevil a freaking janitor?, Logan has been a whiny bitch all season so far (how about that breakup seen. EMOTE MUCH)..etc... Now to take away the coolest part of the show, the season long mysteries just doesn't seem right. Id prefer they wrap a few things up with the final eps and let it die gracefully. Ive only written maybe 3 talkbacks ever but I thought this warranted one. Hopefully this is my chance to say goodbye to one of my personnel favorite shows of all time.

Rumour has it VM is not long for CW

    by itchy

HBO is in serious talks to bring it over there. Kirsten Bell stays, but most of the ancillary characters go. In the first new arc, she moves out of Daddy's house and in with a new bisexual, nymphomaniac roomate played by either Michelle Trachtenberg or Sarah Michelle Gellar. Veronica desides the detective racket is silly, and takes a job as a stripper to make ends meet, and hooks on the side for extra cash. She is brought back into the detective game to find out which one of the 65 guys whe double dipped at a bachelor party knocked her up.

Best. Series. Ever. (After my idea for a re-re-imagining of BSG starring Laser Cats)

    by dance4days

I think season five of Angel is a great example of how a good fourth season of Veronica Mars could be. A bunch of more-or-less standalone episodes that, in the end, turn out to be more connected than they seemed at first. Veronica Mars could easily follow this sort of template and be a great, entertaining season. Maybe a bunch of seemingly unrelated crimes that turn out to be done my an underground crime ring or something. You get the payoff of a big reveal at the end of the season, but you don't get confused if you come into the middle of the season.

Last year between the cancellation of Everwood, Invasion, and killing off Tony, Michelle, Palmer and Edgar I almost did away with TV altogether. Sorry to all the VM fans. I don't watch it, but I feel your pain.

    That's selling out right there

They're fundamentally altering the show FOR THE WORSE in order to get ratings. That's selling out.

I'd rather see the show end on a high note (which it won't, thanks to this ridiculously lame 5 standalone ep ending that season 3 will have.

Oh, and fuck all those who say "I'll take Veronica Mars anyway I can get it". Fuck that, the veronica mars you're going to "get" next year is going to be a vegetable version of it's former self. Sure, it'll look the same, but what we loved about it will be gone.

Now that I'm finally caught up on this show

    by _maltheus_

I had only just got into this show. I fucking hate Hollywood. How could shows like VM and BSG be on the bubble??? Rome's going. Deadwood's gone. Sopranos...well just as well I suppose. Lost turns awful. What the hell else is left? Thank god for Heroes and Dexter, I'll need something to watch.
I guess I never really had time to stop and analyze this show as I've watched it straight through (couple eps a night) with no real breaks. Season 3 is a bit of a let down, but it's still entertaining and I think there's still hope for it yet. But I've never known a show to abandon the arc format and not suck. There is simply no such thing. And if the creator is behind that decision, then I'd say that he's pulling a Milch on his own show.
Angel S5 might have had a lot of standalones, but people didn't love it for those eps as much as they did for the end arc. Illyria and Wesley made that season what it was.
Still I hope they keep the show on for at least one more season. And enough with the freakin' roofies and rape already. Get a decent storyline for Weevil or leave him off the show. Or not. Maybe it is best they cancel it, I just don't want to be without anything to watch. It's bad enough out there.
