Watch The SCRUBS Musical Tonight!!

Published at:  Jan 18, 2007 4:14:47 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

A note from my longtime pal, Kevin Biegel, once a prolific AICN contributor and now a staff writer for NBC’s “Scrubs”:

Herc,

Would it be too big a hassle to run a reminder that this Thursday is the Scrubs musical? I wouldn't bug you except it's really damn good and it's already getting some really nice press. See?

Four star review from David Bianculli …

And then there's this real nice one.

Here's some predictions:

Number of talk backs that reference the Buffy The Vampire Slayer musical: 26

Number of talk backs that reference the Buffy The Vampire Slayer musical in a manner akin to "OMG, it was sooooo much better than the Scrubs' musical": 26

Number of talk backs that refer to the Scrubs' musical as "way too gay": 12

Number of talk backs that refer to me as "way too gay": 26

Number of talk backs that refer to the Scrubs' musical as a nice nod to classic Gilbert and Sullivan / Rogers and Hammerstein / Les Mis big Broadway-style musical theater and not another RENT-style musical riff: 0

Number of people who think I'm a snob for typing that last one: everyone in the universe

Oh and if you wanna have some funny inside shit for fans, write that Sam Lloyd, who plays Ted the Lawyer, decided that he would dance in the big choreographed numbers like he didn't know why he was dancing and he couldn't stop himself. He looks pretty funny in the background of most scenes.

Now i sleep!
Peace,
Kevin
Thursday Night, 9:00 PM, NBC, after The Office

I know … I should go,
But I follow you like a man possessed.
There's a traitor here beneath my breast,
And it hurts me more than you've ever guessed.
If my heart could beat it would break my chest.
But I can see you're unimpressed.
So leave me be,

And let me rest in peace! Let me get some sleep!
Let me take my love and bury it in a hole six foot deep!
I can lay my body down but I can't find my sweet release!
Let me rest in peace!
Why won't you let me rest in peace??

It's been re-edited to take out anything that might be construed as negative due to talkback reaction. And any negative talkbacks have been replaced with over-the-top Scrubs love-fest ones. I guess he's a mate, so it makes sense to do a quick censor job for him. There was probably no need. Like I said in the other post that had it's talkback deleted - we love Scrubs.

Apparently if you don't proclaim absolute love for this episode you get deleted. And the extent of my own deleted post, I dared say something along the lines of "Meh, it's just another 'quirky musical ep', might be fun, might not, either way I'll wait and watch it when I watch the rest of this season, on dvd". Clearly deletion was totally warranted. What a joke.

Stop with the conspiracy theories, people. I've seen such insulting, negative comments about movies and shows the AICNers love that I can't see them removing a post cuz it says "I hate Scrubs." There was another Scrubs talkback here with a lot of negative comments.

You know, Herc's "pal" Kevin is way to gay, just like half of the Scrubs musical! Honestly, the gall of the man, pretending to understand the direction these talkbacks will take...

    by sledge hammer

The story is exactly the same as it was, with the same intro, same end and same amazon hotlinks and pics, but whatever. And you know what, if I'd been acting like a dick and my post got deleted, fair play, I wouldn't complain, but I wasn't, I just wasn't uber-praiseful, despite being a Scrubs fan (I wasn't rallying against it either, I was just, I guess you could say, somewhat underwhelmed), and yet I still got deleted, and that's just plain low. I'm not losing any sleep over it, I just think it's kinda pathetic to rig public/fan response like that so it's clearly weighted to the side that is desired. But hey, again, not my site, so, whatever.

    The copy was modified...

    by thebigdogg

The bit about all of the songs in the Buffy musical being the same. And something else that could have been construed as negative towards Buffy that would have riled Buffy fans up. That was my point - it was clear very quickly that it would have the crazed Whedon fans (something I still can't quite understand) up in arms. Personally, I didn't see the need. Scrubs is immensely popular (and with good reason) and poking the ants nest that are Whedon fans could have been quite entertaining. All that aside - as I had said in the deleted talkback, musical episodes are so done that they had far outlived their usefulness long before there even was a Buffy. I guess the Chicago Hope one was pretty good way back when. I do love Scrubs but I fear this will go into the same bin as the 'sitcom' episode.

Look at Southpark, the movie is way funnier than the show, and the songs are the best part. If any show could hit a home run with a musical episode, it's Scrubs.

    by kelvington

Instead of comparing it to Buffy, which is drama, we should compare it to South Park, which was typically much better than this. If you think of this as just any other show, it was much better than anything we see on any other network. But since we expect so much more from Scrubs it was sort of a let down. Les Mis it's not, they tried, but it wasn't nearly as good as many of the South Park songs. Plus the ADR was lousy.

I thought the song writing was very well tied-in to the overall arc of the show's characters. Sometimes the characters on Scrubs seem so much like real people with real problems. It's very strange for a show that is completely unreal.

It is true that the Scrubs episodes kind of blur together and sometimes seem kind of like the same episode over-and-over à la Law & Order, but the truth is some shows work very well that way.

    by buffywrestling

The song and dance number that was a nod to Grease had me giggling. Probably a little unfair to compare it to OMWF though. BtVS had a pretty huge reveal that Buffy was not in a hell dimension and in heaven at peace which moved the season forward - not to mention THE kiss between Spuffy. Scrubs was a nice self contained eppy that had a basis of reality; it was a singing aneurysm, not a spell!

It was because of the woman's anevrism. Notice how they would only sing when she was around. Bill Lawrence, the show's creator, said that they did a little research and found a case of a woman that heard music because of an anevrism. But of course they over did for the sake of entertainment, since it is a comedy. I for one really liked it and I apreciate the fact that they went all out for this one by hiring professional musical writers. The lyrics and the choreography were amazing and didn't feel out of place at all. And "Guy Love" should definitely be released as a single. :)

Except for the fact it was musical, this was structured very similar to a normal Scrubs episode. To those who said it didn't add anything, not true. First off Elliot has a house now, and where is JD going to end up now that she kicked him out? Also, Carla and Turk have a nanny now. Granted the songs took longer than normal dialog, but some things did happen. Also, Scrubs has taken a page from Seinfeld and is increasing the self-referential items. Just off the top of my head, of course Carla is Dominican, but they went over alot of her backstory in the song. Also, the janitor's solo went back to the very first episode when JD said there was a penny in the door track. Pinch off a clue!

What really kills me is how much music they crammed in...I think I counted NINE songs in a 22 minute episode. Way more ambitious than I would have ever expected. And I totally agree that they should realease some or all of the songs on iTunes.
