Is true!
Look! A press release!
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NBC RENEWS HIT SERIES ‘THE OFFICE,’ ‘MY NAME IS EARL,’
‘HEROES’ AND ‘LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT’ FOR FULL SEASON OF EPISODES IN 2007-08
BURBANK – January 17, 2007 – NBC has ordered early full-season pickups for the 2007-08 season for four hit series -- the comedies "The Office" and "My Name Is Earl," and dramas "Heroes" and "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, " it was announced today by Kevin Reilly, President, NBC Entertainment.
"These four series represent some of the best of what we consider to be the 'NBC brand' of quality shows," said Reilly. "It is a pleasure to give them an early renewal to develop more stories for next year since we know they will remain both critical and commercial successes for a long time to come."
"The Office" is delivering a 4.2 rating, 11 share in 18-49 and 8.7 million viewers through the first 16 weeks of the 2006-07 season and has matched or built on its 18-49 lead-in from "The Office" with every original telecast this season. "The Office" has improved the Thursday 8:30-9 half-hour for NBC this season by 20 percent versus year-ago averages in 18-49. "The Office" is network television's most upscale comedy, delivering primetime's #1 concentration of adults 18-49 living in homes with $100,000-plus incomes.
From Reveille and NBC Universal Television Studio comes the Emmy Award-winning "The Office" (Thursdays, 8:30-9 p.m. ET), a documentary-style look into the sometimes poignant foolishness that plagues the world of 9-to-5, based on the award-winning BBC hit. "The Office" delves into the lives of the workers at Dunder Mifflin paper supply company in
Scranton, Pennsylvania. Regional manager Michael Scott (Golden Globe winner and Emmy nominee Steve Carell, "The 40-Year-Old Virgin") is a single, middle-aged man who is the boastful tour guide for the documentary.
Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer, "Slither") is the friendly office receptionist who bears the brunt of Michael's routines. The bright spots in Pam's day are her conversations with Jim Halpert (John Krasinski, "Jarhead," "Kinsey"), a likable sales rep. Jim shares his working space with Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson, "Six Feet Under"), the arrogant assistant to the regional manager. Ryan Howard (B.J. Novak, "Punk'd") is a young, smart temp who quickly figures out the real office politics.
Also starring are Melora Hardin ("Monk") as Jan Levinson, David Denman ("When A Stranger Calls") as Roy, Leslie David Baker ("Malcolm in the Middle") as Stanley Hudson, Brian Baumgartner ("Arrested Development") as Kevin Malone, Kate Flannery ("The Heir Apparent") as Meredith Palmer, Angela Kinsey ("Tripping Forward") as Angela Martin, Oscar Nuñez
("Halfway Home") as Oscar Martinez, Phyllis Smith "Arrested Development") as Phyllis Lapin, Mindy Kaling ("The 40-Year-Old Virgin") as Kelly Kapour and Paul Lieberstein (writer, "King of the Hill") as Toby.
"The Office" is executive-produced by Ben Silverman, Greg Daniels, who developed the series for American audiences, Ricky Gervais, Stephen Merchant and Howard Klein.
"My Names Is Earl" is averaging a 4.0 rating, 11 share in 18-49 and 9.5 million viewers through the opening 16 weeks of the 2006-07 television season. "Earl" has improved the Thursday 8-8:30 p.m. half-hour for NBC this season by 38 percent versus year-ago results in 18-49.
In "My Name Is Earl" (Thursdays, 8-8:30 p.m. ET), Earl (Jason Lee, "Almost Famous") has taken one too many wrong turns on the highway of life. However, a twist of fate turns his life into a tailspin of life-renewing events when after winning a small lottery, Earl has an epiphany and is determined to transform his good fortune into a life-changing event as he sets out to right all the wrongs from his past.
In its inaugural season last year, the show received the People's Choice Award, two Television Critics Awards, a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series and Emmys for executive producers Greg Garcia and Marc Buckland for writing and directing, respectively.
Joining Earl along his quest to cleanse his karma are his hapless brother Randy (Ethan Suplee, "Cold Mountain") and the very sexy Catalina (Nadine Velazquez, "The Bold and the Beautiful"). Even Darnell (Eddie Steeples, "Torque"), the owner of the Crab Shack where Earl drinks beer, offers his support. But it's Earl's ex-wife Joy (Jaime Pressly, "Not
Another Teen Movie") who won't help him unless there's something in it for her. Created and written by Garcia ("Yes, Dear"), "My Name Is Earl" is executive-produced by Garcia, Buckland ("Medical Investigation," "Ed") and Bobby Bowman ("Yes, Dear"). The series is produced by Amigos de Garcia and Twentieth Century Fox Television.
"Heroes" is the #1 new series of the season in adults 18-49, total viewers and other key categories and, through 16 weeks of the season, is tied for the #3 ranking among all shows in 18-49. "Heroes" is NBC's highest-rated first-year drama in 18-49 in 12 years, since "ER" debuted in Fall 1994. Through January 7, "Heroes" was averaging a 6.8 rating, 16 share in adults 18-49 and 15.3 million viewers overall.
From creator-executive producer Tim Kring (NBC's "Crossing Jordan") comes "Heroes" (Mondays, 9-10 p.m. ET) – recently named the winner of the People's Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama – is an epic drama that chronicles the lives of ordinary people who discover they possess extraordinary abilities – and a destiny to save the world.
They include a genetics professor (Sendhil Ramamurthy, "Blind Guy Driving") in India who is led by his father's disappearance to uncover a secret theory – that there are people with super powers living among us. Also featured are a young dreamer (Milo Ventimiglia, "Gilmore Girls") tries to convince his politician brother (Adrian Pasdar, "Judging Amy") that he can fly. A high school cheerleader (Hayden Panettiere, "Ice Princess") learns that she is totally indestructible while trying to relate to her father (Jack Coleman, "Dynasty") who has a keen interest in people with special abilities. A Las Vegas single mother (Ali Larter, "Final Destination") struggles to make ends meet to support her young son (Noah Gray-Cabey, "My Wife & Kids") and discovers that her mirror image has a secret.
In addition, a fugitive from justice (Leonard Roberts, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") continues to baffle uthorities. A gifted artist (Santiago Cabrera, "Empire"), whose drug addiction is destroying his life and relationship with his girlfriend (Tawny Cypress, "Third Watch"), can paint the future. A down-on-his-luck Los Angeles beat cop (Greg Grunberg, "Alias") can hear people's thoughts, which puts him on the trail of an elusive serial killer. In Japan, a young man (Masi Oka, NBC's "Scrubs") develops a way to stop time through sheer will power.
Joining Kring as executive producer are Dennis Hammer (NBC's "Crossing Jordan") and Allan Arkush (NBC's "Crossing Jordan"). The drama is produced by NBC Universal Television Studio.
"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" (Tuesdays, 10-11 p.m. ET) is averaging a 4.3 rating, 12 share in adults 18-49 and 12.9 million viewers overall through the first 16 weeks of the 2006-07 television season, making it NBC's #2 drama in total viewers. "SVU" remains in control of the Tuesday 10 p.m. hour, where an original episode hasn't lost the time
period to regular competition in adults 18-49 in more than two and a half years. "SVU's" 18-49 margin of victory this season is nearly 50 percent.
"Law & Order" Special Victims Unit" is a hard-hitting and emotional series from NBC's "Law & Order" brand that chronicles the life and crimes of the Special Victims Unit of the New York Police Department, the elite squad of detectives who investigate sexually based crimes. Created by Emmy Award-winning producer Dick Wolf, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" is now in its eighth season.
The drama follows Detective Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni), a seasoned veteran of the unit who has seen it all, and his partner, Detective Olivia Benson (Emmy and Golden Globe winner Mariska Hargitay), whose difficult past – a child of rape – prompted her career move to the unit.
Captain Donald Cragen (Dann Florek) oversees the unit with his tough but supportive approach to the team's complex cases. Detective John Munch, (Richard Belzer, "Homicide: Life on the Street") brings his acerbic wit and street-honed investigative skills to the team. His partner, Detective Odafin "Fin" Tutuola (Ice-T), adds his unique sense of humor and investigative experience, making him a formidable match for Munch. Assistant District Attorney Casey Novak (Diane Neal) brings closure to the intense investigations with her legal expertise. Forensic psychiatrist, George Huang (B.D. Wong) often provides significant clues that lead to the resolution of a case, and Medical Examiner Melinda Warner (Tamara Tunie), uncovers more forensic evidence.
"Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" is a Wolf Films production in association with NBC Universal Television Studio. Wolf, is creator and executive producer, Neal Baer (NBC's "ER", "China Beach"), Ted Kotcheff ("Fun with Dick and Jane," "Weekend at Bernie's") and Peter Jankowski are executive producers.

Heroes FTW.

ENOUGH ALREADY. LAMEST. SHOW. ON. TELEVISION.
-
this is nothing more than a minor pet peeve of mine, but phyllis smith and brian baumgartner were each in ONE episode of arrested development each in tiny parts. there's no need to act like they were the stars of the show. they perfectly hold their own on the office and need no previous "cred" to be legit. hereos and earl are both also amazing
-
Didn't think Jim's new flame Karen (Rashida Jones) would stick around. She's a hottie though, damn shame. Guess it's back to Ross & Rachel- er, Jim and Pam.
-
dammit! karma's a bitch, ain't it andy?
-
Because it really is a great show. I hope that Alec Baldwin's Golden Globe win sealed the deal for a second season. And someone put an end to Studio 60 already. Sorkin could learn a thing or two from 30 Rock.
-
Meh, had to type it ;)
Captboulder, i'm with you in hope so - i find myself actually liking it more than i originally expected to, and the ironic part being that it was promoed like hell as the really big show to expect prior to its release, switching so fast and so early to being on the bubble. The last few episodes were really good IMO, and i believe that by a second season it may reach very high.
Additionally, Heroes and Earl totally rule... -
10th is the new first...
-
I think S60 will be canceled. As much as it pains me to say this (being the huge Sorkin fan that I am)... it's just not a very good TV show.

-
is that nobody is going to find a sketch writer having trouble with a joke that rivetting....well most people anyway...they have this dramatic music play because the joke "just isn't right goddamn it" and it is hard to get to caught up..they take it all a bit too seriously....30 rock similar premise much better show.
-
w00t!!
-
now frakkin' renew BSG for s04. and trow in s05 as well. and a movie. and caprica. and a col. tigh spin-off sitcom.
-
What no Criminal Intent? D'onofrio is the best actor on tv right now. Matter of fact the best character actor in modern film.
Is he leaving and they are ditching the show? -
Does a double post give me the precious 18th post or it it the cursed 17th?
-
The cast is superb and incredibly talented. But let's face it - the show is not... funny!
Tina, please bring back Paul Simms ("Newsradio") out of retirement or wherever he is to help you with this show.
All the ingredients are there. The show begs to be funny. I want it to be so funny so badly. There's just something missing. I don't know what is. I think you skip some steps in establishing and fleshing out the characters. Sometimes the show has the feel of the fourth season of a series and that's not a good thing in this case.
-
Actually I'm not at all. Heroes is NBC's biggest hit this season, while office has blown up recently as well. SVU always delivers solidly for the net, as does Earl.
-
...need to go away. So does CSI. They've run out of ways to kill people without a "ripped from the headlines" angle. How many more effed -up ways to mess with DNA evidence can these shows revisit before even the die-hard viewers switch it off?
"The Wire" is much better fare. I hope it gets as many seasons as L&O and its clones recieved. -
I could see everyone of them being renewed. Give me something meaningful like a new season of BSG or Veronica Mars. Especially, Veronica Mars.

30 Rock IS funny, and getting funnier as everyone gels.

Hopefully it will be back next year.

something off my body. perferably something sticky and hot.
oh, and am i the only person that thinks these flash ads are just appaling?
especially the ace of cakes one, because, lets face it, if i can't the whole thing, then it's not a fucking cake. it's a woodshop project that's been frosted. ace of cakes? no my friend, more like the ace of douchebaggery.
i need some juice. my blood sugar is a little low. -
...that for some inexplicable reason I can't quite turn away from. It's rarely funny, the characters aren't particularly developed beyond being deliberately 'quirky', and the episodes have all the weight of a feather and all the originality of a studio whore for hire, but I still watch it. I'm really not sure why. And if I never saw another episode I honestly wouldn't give a rats ass, but yet here I am, continuing to watch the damn thing.
-
Tomorrow, would be nice....
-
What does everyone think of 'The Knights of Prosperity'?
-
(...as a previous poster said.) This was just the big "we're renewing our really successful shows" press release. They're holding off on everything else, and naturally that includes the two shows that are struggling most in the ratings. The spring ratings will make or break both of those series. I'd say Studio 60 has a decent shot thanks to it's upscale audience (which advertisers like) and the fact that it's ratings go up substantially when you look at Neilsen's viewed-within-a-week-of-air-time statistic (measures DVR and Tivo). Friday Night Lights is sketchier. I can't really see it improving in the ratings, especially since the actual high school football season is over, if that matters.
-
They're all very successful shows. It would be foolish for them to announce whether Studio 60 is renewed or it not at this point, as they not too long ago announced it'd be getting a full season. They'll need to look at upcoming ratings. Unfortunately, I also feel it will not get a second season, which is a damn shame, because although people may have had problems with it originally, the last episodes have been wonderful. Particularly the last one, and this will hopefully continue. The problem is getting back viewers that have already decided that they hated it. It IS the number one Tivo'd show though. Here's hoping.
-
The Office successfully filled the hole in me that was left when Arrested Development was cancelled. Intelligent and laugh-out-loud funny. Earl is great too, this season it almost seems like it's experimenting with its format. Heroes is like crack, It's my favorite TV show on currently. SVU.....never seen an entire episode. I can't even tell all those clones apart. Oh well. Hopefully Studio 60 will get renewed, it was improving. And Scrubs, but I think they're ending the show after this year? Anybody know?
-
Zach Braff's contract is up this year and he's pretty much said he's leaving. Donald Faison (Turk) mentioned the possibility of doing it without him, which I wouldn't be totally opposed to, except that structurally I don't know how it would work. It probably depends on whether or not 30 Rock also comes back, because they especially won't bother trying to keep it if it doesn't have a partner for the hour.
-
The Office too! Yay!
-
The creator of Scrubs said there will be a seventh season and he thinks he'll get Braff to do it.
He also said he won't do it without Braff.
-
slightly interesting that it gets high ratings, because that demographic sure is a minority.
-
Now that I think about it, I think the problem with 30 Rock is that there is just absolutely no conflict on the show. It's too smooth and without any edges.
When you think of shows like Newsradio and Larry Sanders, there was a tremendous amount of conflict between the characters. That seems to be a necessary ingredient for sitcoms.
The only time 30 Rock started to get its footing was with the Dennis character and they didn't keep that story going.
-
fromhttp://tinyurl.com/3atu9v NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly....He credited the success of several shows for the network's rebound this fall, most notably workplace satire "The Office," blue-collar comedy "My Name Is Earl," crime drama "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and freshman serial thriller "Heroes."
Reilly said all four would be renewed for next season. And he vowed to "stick with quality" freshman programs that have struggled to find an audience, including football drama "Friday Night Lights," "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" and "30 Rock."
And while NBC has a deal with real estate tycoon Donald Trump to renew his reality series "The Apprentice" again next season, Reilly said that show's return depends on its ratings performance this year, which has so far been disappointing. -
don't know how the space got in there above...
-
YES, I AM !!! AND WHAT OF IT???
-
The UK version, the US version and the German version named "Stromberg".
I hate God for killing my kittie today, but please let there be a new Season of Scrubs! -
unless they made it all about "The Todd". Now that guy could hold his own show. As could Elizabeth "I'm going to put my bike in your trunk" Banks.
-
of great writing, and an amazing cast. Alec Baldwin is the funniest human (not that winning the Golden Globe for best actor in a comedy series means anything, but it's obvious), Tracy Morgan plays a crazy celeb like it's typecasting, and Fey is the perfect sitcom heroine - she serves as a logical center in the world of insanity that is network television. Like Jason Bateman in Arrested. Have you watched the show?? I've been watching the Office, Scrubs and Earl since they began, and I look forward to 30 Rock more than all of them.
-
No doubt 30 Rock is funny and getting better with each passing episode. Quirky characters aside, Alec Baldwin is a master of dialogue, punctuation and character. Cast is gellin' like Magellan and writing keeps getting better and better.
Every episode has a "huh? moment - but most shows have 100 of them. So they're ahead of the curve.
They gave shite-storm Joey a second chance - so SAVE 30 ROCK!
-
Focusing less on sketch comedy, and more on relationship comedy. I think this is pretty much what most people wanted to hear, how the characters and relationships will be the focus, and it was pretty evident things were headed that direction by the last episodes. I just hope that NBC actually airs the final 4 episodes once The Black Donnellys takes over, and doesn't do some lame thing like having them only available online.
-
and it's pretty funny that for Kevin and Phyllis' previous work credits, they list "Arrested Development", where they just sat in board meetings and didn't even say anything. I suppose it IS accurate, they were in the show. But pretty much just doing extra-work.
-
both need to be picked up! Somebody make it happen!
-
Sorry, too much geeking there.
Glad to see THE OFFICE and EARL getting picked up again as well. I honestly wouldn't miss STUDIO 60, 30 ROCK or FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, though.
-
both suck. There, I said it. Mean Girls was overrated, SNL only got better after Fey left. Don't get me wrong, I'd still throw it to her like nobody's business, but methinks if she looked like Garofalo, she would be seen as a poor man's Garofalo, and that's not a fate I would wish upon anyone. And Studio 60 is just boring. You've got the single most underrated comedien on there, you have to make an effort to be as uninteresting as you are. Well done, Sorkin. Maybe you should get back on the crack.
-
"Do I have two ears and a heart"? Although 30 Rock is silly and featherweight, it still has plenty of stuff that is hilarious. Kenneth is a fucking riot as well. I hope they keep the whole block of four shows for next year.
-
Sure, it's more than the average, but not more than the average college educated couple earn. It's really not that much in 2007 USA dollars. We (wife and I) earn well past than and are really only middle class, if that.
-
I totally thought of that like two seconds after you left.
-
...and he's going to have a very interesting super power. Still a shame that our favorite 9th Doctor (from *Doctor Who* for the unwashed masses) was not cast for the role of The Joker in the upcoming Batman sequel...
-
Add me to the list of 30 Rock IS funny. I really wanted to hate it too, but I just can't. I can hate scrubs though. Scrubs is just terrible, but if it is doing okay on Comedy Central and other syndication outlets it probably will find a way back, because new episodes are practically profitable before they air. I wish it would go away and get replaced by something I like. Two straight hours of sitcoms I like on a real network is something I never expected would happen, but NBC is very close. Even though the Office isn't syndicated yet, I noticed the DVDs were selling out over Christmas and they had trouble keeping them in stock around here, it is also a popular download show, so that show is money in the bank too. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE DOCTOR WHO ON HEROS! NBC is so good now, I can almost forgive them for airing Friends.

As for Tina Fey, I loved Mean Girls, didn't think she was great at all on snl, and studio 60 took a few weeks to warm up to me, but now I look forward to it each week as much as earl and office. Office, this season has been kind of dull, I don't know, I guess maybe the whole storyline thing is kind of a drag. Still funny, but a step down from last season. Oh and Knights of Prosperity, I definitely dig it, It's got that same kind of goofiness as 30 Rock. Isn't it great to live in an age when all these non-laugh track sitcoms are popping up. Only 3 years ago Arrested Development showed up, if it were to premeire now, it'd probably have a better chance.

I wanted to hate 30 Rock too, because she ruined SNL...

but it's hilarious, especially of course because of Alec Baldwin. It's a great cast in general though, and here's hoping it'll come back for a few more years at least. Oh, and Knights of Prosperity is entertaining as well, but I think it needs to gel more. I'm really glad that the big black guy is in it though, his voice is so bad-ass.
