Combo Disc!! Combo Player!! BABEL!! BEERFEST!! CLERKS!! Herc’s HDTV Cellar!!
SPOILER ALERT !!

CES La Vie! It was a big week for HD with the arrival of the International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. And people are perhaps beginning to awaken to the idea that neither of the new HD disc formats may necessarily be Betamax. The Associated Press’ Gary Gentile commented on the continuing HD-DVD/Blu-Ray format rivalry:
Analysts and executives thought that by this year's show, there would be a clear winner, especially after Sony in November released its Playstation 3 video game console, which comes standard with a Blu-ray disc drive. Instead, both sides have hunkered down for what could be a long fight, and some are even conceding that both formats may be here to stay.
"In an optimal world you would have one format," Kevin Tsujihara, president of the Warner Bros. home entertainment group, said this week. "But there are many industries where multiple formats have existed and flourished." Tsujihara noted that in video gaming, three incompatible formats - Playstation, the Microsoft XBox and consoles from Nintendo, including the recently released Wii - have existed for years.
Trouble With LG’s Blu-ray/HD-DVD Combo Player? LG is set to introduce on Feb. 4 the BH100, an $1,199 machine designed to play both Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs. But there’s word that the new device will not play HD-DVD’s HDi (aka iHD) interactive content. So I’d continue to give consideration to just taking your $1,200 and buying an HD-DVD player, a Blu-ray player, and an A/B switch.
Warner Intros Blu-Ray/HD-DVD Combo Discs Another way to resolve the format war? Warner Bros. says it will introduce in the latter half of the year an HD disc that will play in both HD-DVD and Blu-ray machines and will not cost “materially” more than a regular disc. It’s called a “Total Hi-Def” (THD) and you can read more about it at engadgethd.com.

Moriarty Says HD-DVD Wins AICN editor Drew “Moriarty” McWeeny says HD-DVD has won the format wars because Blu-ray is not pursuing pornography. This is particularly telling because I think Moriarty says he has no use for porn.
HD Pic of the Week!!

Here’s some of what this site’s headgeek, Harry Knowles, had to say about “Clerks II,”
which arrives on HD-DVD today:
… What [writer-director Kevin Smith] has slyly done in his own ass-to-mouth, donkey show kinda way -- has crafted his own modern mid-thirties geek retelling of AMERICAN GRAFFITTI. This film is a turning point movie. Set on that day where your old life and your new life are set to split -- and it scares friends, one's self ...
Then there's Rosario Dawson -- this actress is amazing. She has a wanton sexuality about her that flies off the screen. She's able to project sex, womanhood and one of the guys all at once. Rosario plays "Becky" the manager of MOOBY'S and Dante's gal pal. The most sublimely beautiful moment in the history of Kevin Smith films takes place with her and Dante on the roof of the Mooby's - Rosario teaching him to dance - by having Jay & Silent Bob boom-boxing "ABC 123". This song is... pure innocent joy. When Michael was black and the age he wanted and still wants to be. The scene that erupts from this was beautiful. Simply beautiful. …
CLERKS II is fucking funny. It also counts. It isn't an empty bag of laughs, there's a lot of soul here. …

No more Black Jack!

should get an Oscar nomination for Best Picture. not saying it should win over Babel, but it was made so well, it really deserves something. I'm all about rewarding innovative semi-failures, and obviously innovative mostly successes, but what about films that are simply perfect versions of an established genre? this was a perfect version of about 3 genres.hopefully it gets a nom for screenwriting at least. so fucking good. not since shawshank have I seen a movie so well put together that I honestly can't understand anyone not liking them. at all.
-
it should have read. bad grammar, Wonka.
-
Give it another 12 months and it will be a non-issue, just like the whole DVD+R DVD-R format. I'll wait until then to buy.
-
the format first had shit like "van helsing." that kind of worries me, because i have an hd dvd player, but not blu-ray.

There Joone, founder of the company Digital Playground and director of extremely popular HD porn movies, declared that his company would from next week on be publishing movies on HD DVD on a regular basis.
This is a U-turn for Joone, who at last year had declared his support for the Blu-ray Disc format. Asked about his change of attitude the director responded that he had in fact wanted to publish his movies on Blu-ray Disc, but that all Blu-ray Disc copying facilities in the United States had REFUSED to cooperate. The companies had unanimously declared that Sony had threatened to WITHDRAW their Blu-ray licenses should they stoop to making HD copies of pornographic films.
As a consequence Digital Playground now intends to release HD DVD products at a rapid rate: Thus between now and the first week of February the company, with Island Fever 3, Pirates, Teen America and Island Fever 4. Thereafter up to the end of the year the company will aim to release four HD-DVD titles a month. Each disc will probably cost 5 US dollars more than its DVD counterpart.
Worst mistake for Sony. -
People won't give up DVDs for another 5 years, after which the infrastructure will be in place to download HD movies at your convenience.
-
That about sums up my feelings. Call me when one format wins, and it's priced equal to what DVDs are nowadays...
-
Eventually, we'll see DVD players that can play all existing formats. So the format that will 'win' will be the cheaper one.
-
Put this format in the "why didn't they do this in the first place" catagory. Poor PS3. All Blu-Ray and nowhere else to go.
-
Simply because the average consumer has no desire to spend more than $100 on a player, and $15 on a disk. Nothing of value, unlike the rise of DVD, which promised a slicker format, better image and sound and close to VHS sell thru cost. What does HD DVD formats get you? Better image? The average movie viewer , even those with a nice screen, aren't shoping for a better image. Regular DVD is pretty good most of the time.
-
And I think the difference between HD DVD and regular DVD is the same as the difference between DVD and VHS, it's just fantastic. That being said, looks like all the cool movies are coming out for Blue Ray. Stupid BR! And there is no news forthcoming about which way NewLine will take, so I can't watch the LoTR trilogy in HD. DAMNIT! That's really all I want for Christmas this year is the extended versions in HD DVD.
-
he is from the future. and he has a new kid. congrats again.

Porn may have decided the VHS and Beta war, but now we've got this little thing called teh internets. Back in the 80s you could either get porn on film reels, go to a nasty porn theater or get porn on VHS. Those were your options. No wonder VHS won back then, but now it is a completely different scenario. Blu-Ray is about to have an ONSLAUGHT of exclusive titles coming from Sony, Disney, MGM, Fox and Lions Gate as you have seen above. The only major studio exclusive to HD-DVD is Universal. This is why Blu-Ray will win.
-
Some Blu-Ray movies max out at 50 gigabytes. My current Blu-Ray Disc collection(20 films) would be somewhere around a terabyte. Who has that kind of hard disk space? And also haven't you realized how long it would take to download 50 gigabytes? Downloadable HD movies are a long way off until we can have 200 terabyte hard disks and 1 gigabyte per minute download speeds.

Porn would've been the deciding factor if DVDs were the only format that people acould acquire it from. There's a good article that came out this week in Newsweek basically stating porn DVD sales have slumped for a few years and now more of the porn companies, like Vivad are just using Dvds to promote there websites.
