Quint has read the script for Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN remake!!!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with my thoughts on Rob Zombie's HALLOWEEN remake script. Let's get the background out of the way first. I liked the first 10 minutes of HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, but it went downhill after that, turning into a boring exercise in style over substance. However, Zombie won me back with DEVIL'S REJECTS. I can point to some dialog that didn't work, but overall the tone he captured, the characters he gave us and superb casting of horror icons really won me over. To this day, I think REJECTS made good on the promise he was making about CORPSES being a return to hard edged '70s exploitation. I am a gonzo huge fan of John Carpenter's original HALLOWEEN. It wouldn't be an exaggeration to say I've seen that movie 50 times from start to finish. I'm very protective of it, but at the same time I recognize how shitty the sequels got. The only film I really hold up on a pedestal is the original, though I love HALLOWEEN II and get a bizarre kick out of the Michael Myers-less 3... but that could be due to my idol worship of Tom Atkins. So, I wasn't the biggest fan of the idea of remaking HALLOWEEN, but having loved the '70s feel of REJECTS and seeing that Zombie seemed to hold HALLOWEEN as dearly as I did, I thought I'd give him a chance. I'm not automatically against a remake if there's someone really interesting involved, like when Carpenter remade THE THING. He had an interesting vision and made an incredible film. Hell, I even really liked the ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 remake that came out a couple years ago. So it was that I cracked open the script. And so it is that I'm writing this now, absolutely befuddled. I'm hoping the script I read (a long script, at 125 pages) is a very, very, very early draft. Even if it is, there are some very fundamental things wrong with it. The script starts out with a home movie of the Myers family, which freezes on a gap-toothed young Michael Myers grinning for the camera. The title HALLOWEEN is placed here. From this point on, we're treated to over 40 pages of the Young Michael Myers Chronicles. In these adventures, bullies pick on him, his stripper mom's redneck boyfriend (to be played by William Forsythe) calls him a faggot and keeps talking about fucking his mom in front of him and the 10 year old Myers masturbates to Polaroids of various animals he's killed while listening to them die on playback from his trusty tape recorder. Look. This is a remake, so of course I was expecting some things to change. I would have been kind of pissed if it was just a retread, but what I really find myself disappointed with is the lack of understanding Zombie is showing on why Michael Myers works. In the original film, Myers was bigger than a serial killer or a psychopath. He was evil. Unemotional. Uncaring. He was the boogeyman. Hence the ending line. His character was never even referred to in the script as Michael, but as The Shape. When you explain away Michael, giving him modern day serial killer hellish upbringing, you take away his power. He no longer represents a myth bigger than a person, he doesn't represent death incarnate. He's just an average psycho in a mask. There's nothing special to him anymore. I was hoping that Zombie, as a professed fan of Carpenter's film, would understand that and it's my biggest disappointment in the script that Zombie doesn't seem to. There was even a point, around the time 10 year old Myers is in Loomis' care and chatting it up while coloring paper masks, that I thought I might have a fake script. But the script is filled with new characters that Zombie has cast, like Big Joe Grizzly (Ken Foree) and Ronnie White (Forsythe) and Nole Kluggs (Lew Temple), that there's not a real possibility that I got a fake. So, the hope is still there that it's a very early draft and the reason that hope is there is thus: A) There seem to be about 2 typos per page and B) A cast character, Ismael Cruz (Danny Trejo), is not in the script I read. Every other character who has been cast is in it and there are a ton of roles I can see Trejo in. So, let's get back to the script a bit. There are two ideas in the new script that I really like. Despite Michael's rough childhood, he always showed affection towards the baby, nicknamed "Boo." Followers of the Halloween series will know why that is important and if you don't know, I'd advise you to stop reading. I'm not going to ruin new, specific beats, but I am going to talk about this as a fan of the mythos of the series. Of course, "Boo" is baby Laurie. If it was up to me, I'd show Myers as an emotionless kid, always kind of blank, but a glimmer pops up whenever he sees the baby. I like the idea of him drawn to her and that giving him a reason for seeking her out later. I also quite like the idea of spending some time with Dr. Loomis trying to get through to Michael. Ideally, it'd be a good place to explore Loomis as a character. He shouldn't be having conversations with Myers, he should be slowly realizing what he doesn't want to. If Michael's pure evil, without having a reason to be evil (no verbally abusive father figure or mean bullies), it flies in the face of everything Dr. Loomis believes in as a psychiatrist. That is where Loomis' obsession with Myers comes from. That's fascinating to me. Here, Dr. Loomis falls into the background. This is all Michael Myers all the time, which is another mistake. Zombie forgoes Myers being a quiet shell, with dead eyes, from the moment Loomis sees him. We see his mood swings, he chats away and colors in different pieces of paper to make masks that we find out later, when we meet the adult Michael Myers, that he uses them to represent his mood, including when he needs to take a shit. In Michael Myers' mind, he goes, "It's about time I put on the 'I gotta take a shit' mask so I can express myself." We meet adult Michael Myers on page 48 and here's another shocker. There's a reason Tyler Mane was cast. Michael Myers is described in the script as being 6'10" and 280lbs. Again, that strikes me as being untrue to the original character. Making him a hulk of a being kind of puts him into the Jason or Leatherface realm, no? As an adult, Michael Myers feels like an amalgam of the Myers we know and Leatherface from the CHAINSAW remakes. He's big and he chases people down. Gone is the sure and steady, calm and unemotional Myers. Laurie Strode isn't introduced until page 69 and the final moments of Myers stalking Haddonfield don't really happen until the last 20/25 pages. And yes, it does feel rushed. And yes, adult Michael Myers, with the mask, does speak. Ugg... And yes, they try to show Myers' "human" side in the last act. Double Ugg... The good news is just from a pure exploitation angle, Zombie included lots of gore and a ridiculous amount of nudity. It's going to really weird me out if Hanna R. Hall (the first Jenny in Forrest Gump) reveals as much as the script requires Judith Myers to reveal. And the 10 year old Myers groping her before stabbing her is also going to freak me out a tad. Sheri Moon's character is always wearing something skimpy in the script and Danielle Harris' Annie (a great move casting Harris, by the way) gets very exposed. Actually, pretty much every female in the script except for Laurie Strode, will get naked. Great. I just wish he'd make that a different movie, take the mask out of it, change the names and not draw the comparisons. I can see Malcolm McDowell (another great bit of casting) being excellent in the role of Dr. Loomis and I can see him making some of the weak dialog work just out of sheer charisma and talent, but compared to the Donald Pleasance Loomis, I'm afraid he's going to fall short. This Loomis, as written, is too weak and when he goes a little mental trying to talk people into the threat of Myers he just comes off as annoying. The script has a very high body count, ample nudity and a solid cast. But I firmly believe Zombie completely missed the boat on Myers and is making a big mistake with the story. The script really feels like he just wants to make Halloween... but super-badass hardcore and fuckin' extreme, without a thought to the character work that went into the original. The dialog is distractingly bad at times. He does keep Lynda's overuse of the word totally, but then he adds in Annie and Lynda always calling each other "bitch" every time they see each other. "Hey bitches!" If I can get my hands on a the shooting draft I will. I wanted this to work, but the script I read is a real disappointment. Hopefully there are some big changes from the draft I read. And I mean big. You can play around with a lot of things... setting, style, camera movement and certain characters, but to mess with Michael Myers as a movie monster is unforgivable. -Quint

*GASP!* Rob Zombie has no brains?!

    by thenewpulper

This must be fake. It can't be real. Because The Devils Rejects was such a fine film... I mean, all the great moments like where the guy hurts the other guy, laughs, then hurts someone else. Then they all die at the end to a song that's played for too long and then the credits roll, leaving essentially anyone with remnants of a soul completely unsatisfied for having nothing to relate to. He's trying to make it "ultra fuckin' badass"? Really? With no comprehension of what made the original so great? This can't be true! What the fuck did you expect from a guy named Rob Fucking Zombie? I mean, seriously...

  • Jan. 11, 2007, 11:04 p.m. CST

Remake aka yet another crappy sequel

    by OhioBobcat

Today's films are completely ruining the images of these classic horror icons. (See: Hannibal Rising, TCM: The Beginning) And even though this seems to be the audiences biggest complaint, filmmaker refuse to listen. Thank God nothing ever came of the pre-burning Freddy flick!

    Michael Speaking...

    by TheDarkShape

Is not something I'm adamently against (though I know a lot of people are). One of the original H20 ideas was for him to say, "Laurie..." just before she takes a swing with the ax. That, I think, would've been creepy. I'm more worried about the mood swing masks.

    I fucking new it.

I hate this already. I'm to angry to even write a response. if this script rings true it is the biggest insult to the BEST horror film ever. Fuck you Rob Zombie. FUCK YOU!!

let rob do what he wants to do

    by drownbilly

didn't rob zombie say that he wanted to reimagine "hallowen" and not remake it. we can bitch all we want about his new ideas, but nothing will be changed. the original "halloween" fans will make up a small percentage of people who go see rob zombies "halloween" let us original "halloween" fans have the good one and let the teenybopping horror crowd now have rob zombies "halloween" that from the get go wasn't going to even come close to the greatness level as the original

    by nopix

This can't be the script quint, it just can't. Zombie has said he really respects and loves the ORIGINAL Halloween. And fuck yes of course Myers is supposed to be evil incarnate. I just can't believe it..fuck i can't even form sentences anymore.

    Who gives a fuck?

    by Angry Mean Panda

Would we rather another movie where Busta Rhymes beats up Michael Myers with kung fu? You really want that again? If Zombie walked into the theater and took a massive shit on the screen, it would still be better than that last abomination. And frankly, I'd rather a remake that brings something different to the table than a fucking retread.

  • Jan. 11, 2007, 11:30 p.m. CST

And what is with this new trend?

    by nopix

Thomas Harris did the same thing with his Hannibal character. They give him excuses and make him human. This is insanity.

This sounds like a lot of trouble...

    by DanielKurland

and I doubt so much could drastically be changed by the final product. Of course, most people seeing this probably aren't aware of the intricacies of Meyers, and the movie, and will be satisfied with this.

I hope this changes a lot

    by Pr_Frink

I had a fear when they said Zombie was going to do it because it seemed like he did genuinely love the character but would try to add the Zombie style to it and then completly miss what it is that makes Myers truly terrifying. Still lots of time to change it though.

Rob Zombie, I hope you suffer a long, searing bout of terminal colon cancer the day you wrap this film, so that the last things you hear will be millions of people cheering your pain-wracked death because of this movie. You just didn't listen, and so it's time to pay the piper.

  • Jan. 11, 2007, 11:49 p.m. CST

I'm a bit conflicted on this

    by RevSick

While I have to agree with Quint on the things that he has issue with, I too feel that going that in-depth into Michael's upbringing completly misses the point, I know some people around the production and everything I've heard is that it's going to be great. Now, one thing I feel the need to bring up is the Dawn of the Dead remake, alot of people like it, and I was not a huge fan of it as a remake, as a stand alone zombie film it was alright, but as Dawn of the Dead it sucked, I think this is what we are probably going to get here, as a serial killer movie it's probably going to be pretty good, as Halloween, not so good, assuming this is anything close to a final draft.

I don't want to see the nurture version of Michael Myers, I want to see the NATURE version of Michael Myers. The bad seed... the born evil. That's what makes him the boogyman. Plus, why does everything that is bad have to be so damn BIG now? Giant football sized Predators, and now a Michael Myers that can bench press a truck. I think people are missing the point here.

  • Jan. 11, 2007, 11:58 p.m. CST

Most of these companies missed the point long ago....

    by RevSick

I mean c'mon, they wouldn't hire Zombie just to do another sequel, but you pitch it as a prequel and it sells, that's the problem with Hollywood. Right now Prequels sell so everyone and their brothers are doing them, I suppose one could blame George Lucas for that but it's a bit different when the original you put out is the second half of a larger idea, these invented prequels to what where supposed to be stand alone films never work.

    I knew this would suck

    by andrew coleman

I don't care what others do but I am boycotting this. I am sick of remakes. I also hate that every bad guy in movies needs a seriously long back story. Myers was a cool bad guy because he was straight up an evil unstoppable zombie. Hear nothing will make sense they just had to make him a wimp who gets beat up and blah blah blah. Screw remakes and this movie that's my stand point other people can do as they wish. I know remakes do well because people don't know any better but this seriously needs to stop. I hope Halloween remake bombs hard at the BO like really hard so they don't try this again... Wait a second didn't the Psycho remake bomb really hard? Yet they did this anyway? Oh God there is no hope! Also Rob Zombie is a sell out and my caring for his movies has gone to 0.

    I'm upset, need to ramble

    by SebastianHaff

Since I was 14 years old, Rob Zombie has been, in my eyes, as cool as it gets. He's up there with Shaft, with Stallone, even George Romero. I've always dug his music and adore both of his films. He's one of the very, very few celebrities I got nervous about meeting, and not just because of how beautiful his wife looked. So it hurts me to do it, but I have to call bullshit. Michael Myers does not run. Michael Myers does not talk. Michael Myers is not your typical "I got picked on so now I kill people" serial killers. He just isn't. Remake or not, if your going to change something as crucial as Myers, why still call it Halloween? I like that it at least appears as if Zombie's gonna make it trashy and 70's exploitation style (though the original certainly wasn't, but it's a fun take on the subject), somebody just needs to tell him that Michael Myers is off fucking limits. Reimagine the hell out of the story all you want, but leave Mike alone, Zombie! I've defended you for too many years for you to cinematically sodomize me now! Don't you dare fuck this up. But uh, good luck with the shoot!

    TOO SOON! review this script

    by KCMOSHer

I think it's too early to judge where this is headed. One thing Zombie will have here more than any other project he's attempted is studio interference. This isn't an idea of his he wants to launch, this is a -valuable franchise- that the owners obviously want to re-launch and take far beyond Rob's take on things. The script Quint reviews here feels like a Zombie script...which is why I don't think it's what will wind up on screen. It may have gotten him hired, but I think there will be a lot of 'make it more like the original' notes passed along during production, assuming they haven't already during re-writes. If anything, my worry here is too much studio interference. Tons of nudity? Involving youngsters? Yeah, I'm not seeing that. Gore and violence (TORTURE PORN!) I can see coming from the studios of today, but they're totally reeling in the sexual content when -attached- to the violence. Even Saw III's nude scene shocked the hell out of me, despite having very little violence to it (sure, she's being murdered, but not with a axe or anything). So yeah...let's wait till they're on the set and shooting to judge what we're going to see. Before then, it's far too soon to panic.

  • Jan. 12, 2007, 12:09 a.m. CST

    P.S. Danielle Harris Naked

    by KCMOSHer

Don't get your hopes up. She's in her 20's and drop-dead gorgeous...if she wanted to do nudity, she could have been working for quite awhile now, instead of the meager pickings she's had since she's grown up. Expect the nudity to be cut, or extensive body double usage.

    ...Stil upset

    by SebastianHaff

I know this isn't that big a deal. It's just a movie. But Hollywood needs to quit this humanizing serial killers bullshit. It's not fuckin' scary! Every goddamn month you've got another director going on and on in Fangoria about how "this isn't just a Friday the 13th clone, MY killer is more human, so it's really tragic in a sense..." Uhh, tragic? What's so scary about somebody getting picked on and becoming a psycho? That makes me think said killer is a little bitch for not being to take a little hazing. Get over it. Is that what you've done, Zombie? Have you made Michael Myers a BITCH? So now the Boogeyman is just that little douche bag from high school that played D & D in the library at lunch? I hated that dumbass little poindexter, and if he's what you've made Myers become, I fart in your general direction.

As far as a backstory goes...

    by Zeke25:17

...the novelization for the original 1978 film came up with a dilly: waaayyy back in medieval times, some poor deformed kid named Enda (really) had a crush on the local beautiful maiden, who spurned him for the local handsome prince-to-be. So (of course) during the wedding ceremony when everyone starts dancing in a circle, Enda slices the young marrieds with his handy blade, causing much grief among all the other partygoers who pretty much tear him to pieces. He is then buried in an unholy place (kinda like the Necronomicon) and cursed to "relive his foul deed every thousand years". Or something. And that's how little Micheal Myers became...THE BOOGEYMAN. Okay, I admit, it sounds hokey. But I gotta say it beats the shit out of what's in this script so far. Just retitle the movie, rename the characters, and say that it was INSPIRED by Halloween. Honestly: why remake what was already perfectly done the first time?

I also heard Rob u'll be shooting it in 78mm then downgrading it to 8mm and then everyone will re-record their dialogue before removing it again and finally releasing it as a silent movie, save for a 100% Rob Zombie soundtrack. Oh and I especially liked the moment in the script where at the end Myers grabs his cock shoves it in Laurie's ear - finally killing her as her HEAD EXPLODES IN 3D! Then then COMES all over the screen shouting: "I'm a gonna kill you all, ya hear me dudes, I'm a gonna kill yeez alllll!!!!" Sounds like one classy remake to me.

Rob Zombie can't direct, can't write and has no cool ideas in his nappy head. He is going to ruin Halloween and what it stands for. I knew that he was going to go this way because it's so tired. And I'm sorry his wife is a horrible actress. Why you say? If you were directing a movie. Would you put her in it?? The answer is NO!! Now ask your self the same question about Rob Zombie. The guy has done two movies that are terrible. Why do you think that he could pull off probably the one of the best movies of all time??? He can't and he won't. This movie is going to be a trainwreck. I just don't understand why studios just don't give Carpenter and Dean Cundy a shit load of money and creative controle. I know the old geizer has a kickass Halloween script in the trunk of his car.

I can see into the future... Ready?

    by Kasch

Mark my words. Hell, write them down. Because this is EXACTLY what's going to happen: 1) Zombie will make his over-the-top sleaze version. 2) Test screenings will be completely disasterous. 3) Dimension will take it and retool it into another "Black Christmas." End of the Halloween franchise. Bye-bye.

    I'm pretty conflicted...

    by Sledge Hammer

On one hand it's a totally different take on the concept, which I think is actually a good thing, because you can't out-Halloween the original Halloween, so your only chance to make a 'remake' that has it's own reason for being is for it to carve out it's own path. But on the other hand, the path it's seemingly chosen seems very lacking in originality and appears to have utterly missed the point of the original film, it's strongest aspects and what it was ultimately all about. I'll wait and see and judge then, but right now still curious, but far from excited. And I like Zombie as a director.

    I was hopeful before this

    by Franklin T Marmoset

I also thought Devils Rejects was pretty good, and I'd hoped Zombie had enough respect for seventies horrors that he could do something interesting with this remake. He's taking a different tack, which is a good thing, but this explaining of every damn thing is a very bad idea for a horror.<p>The dark is scary because of what you can't see, and painstakingly explaining WHY it's dark takes away the fear. I can't help but thinking that an in-depth backstory (hate that word, sick in my mouth) will neuter this character, especially when you're throwing in a grab-bag of serial killer cliches.<p>On a positive note, it's nice to see Joe Hallenbeck's daughter is getting work.

This doesn't bode well for Halloween fans

Maybe remaking Halloween is Rob Zombie's Moby Dick. Good intentions can only go so far without a decent script. After seeing the new Chainsaw film, I am weary of too much backstory and exposition. However as an artist myself, I have to respect Zombie's decisions. The man has been trusted with a timeless, classic horror film. I know that every fan, would remake the film differently. With this being said, it doesn't mean everybody is gonna dig his specific vision. However, Rob Zombie is being entrusted with a very profitable franchise. This film restarts that. If it's a hit, there will be much more money to mine from Michael Meyers. I anticipate the studio being very controlling about certain aspects of the film. With that being said, I assure the fans, the script will be polished.

The villains of "Devils Rejects" were portrayed as heroes, while their innocent victims had no feelings and the cop trying to stop them was showen to be a bad guy. Now michael meyers is going to be shown to be a hero? No hes silent, he's possessed by the devil, hes pure catatonic evil. Theres no WHY to him hes just evil!

Is it true Myers tap-dances through the killing spree?

    by Azazyel

I'm worried. As a massive fan, I think the Halloween franchise does need a reboot or or just to RIP. However, it seems clear that Zombie (who I have enjoyed so far) is going humanize Myers. The key thing about him is 'Why?' - he stands pretty much alone in being motiveless in the 1st movie. I think Quint has it right when he says "make that a different movie, take the mask out of it, change the names and not draw the comparisons". Still, I'm willing to wait and see. A bold attempt now is better than another Halloween Resurrection...

    Michael Myers

    by Black Satin 2

I agree. This story should be about how Dr. Loomis came to the slow but terrifying realization that Myers is not only outworldly, but is then capable of getting out whenever he wants to. In the original, he organizies the insane asylum to go outside in the rain. Who's to say he hasn't done other things easily enough? 'Who taught him to drive?' Lots of ideas come up on that. To have him show up as a hulking monster just ruins it if they go in that direction.

    This does not bode well...

    by JimmyLoneWolf

My position on Rob Zombie is that I like The Devil's Rejects and even had a good time with House of 1000 Corpses (although much of that film felt like straight-to-dvd hackery, there were some scattered moments of flickering brilliance throughout). I also enjoyed Zombie's self-deprecating dvd commentary in which he admits to being "not very careful" in his editing. However, despite the HUGE surprise of TDR, I still had the nagging feeling that Zombie had "gotten lucky" with the sequel. I then checked out Zombie's hosting gig on TCM Underground and was a bit underwhelmed with the job he did introducing films like Faster, Pussycat, Kill! Kill! and The Honeymoon Killers. His speaking style was monotone and unenthusiastic, and it was all-too-obvious that he was reading from cue cards. Tarantino he is not. And it sucks, because its obvious that Zombie is an all-around good guy and DOES have a genuine love for exploitation horror. Unfortunately, as we are painfully finding out, his passion far outweighs his talent and innovation. It breaks my heart to say this, but the "next big thing" is turning out to be as vacant and hollow as The Shape itself. If he turns Halloween into a winner (and I hope to God he delivers on that great poster), I will gladly eat my words. But for now, I'm worried. Say it isn't so Rob!!!

Rule 1......never show how the charecter came to be. You lose the whole mystic. Ok, im not a diehard halloween fan although i do like the first two films. I like the fact that he was a slow thoughtful killer, you could see his mind thinking all the time, very controlled and calculating. A direct oppersite to Voorhees....which is whats great about michael, he was different. It seems like this remake is changing that and thats gonna turn him into a generic slasher charecter. They should of kept the film begining when he is shut in hospital as a child and finish when he escapes and drives off. Who knows, the film could be good...after all the script doesnt mean anything, films change so much when editing them anyway. As far as John Carpenter goes, he hasnt made much that is good anyway apart from The Thing. He really isnt that good a director. Fingers crossed people.

There, I said it. I agree with Quint here. The only thing that could really mess up Halloween is making Myers human. Zombie's got such a horror boner for psychopaths, that the thought of the character being something more sinister doesen't even enter his mind.

A backstory and lots of gore. Sounds like the Black Christmas remake. Or was it Black X-Maz? I agree with most of the people here. Black Christmas, TCM, The Hitcher...they give backstory to the killers, and they're not scary anymore. I was reading an interview with the music video hack who's directing the hitcher remake, and he was bragging about how he added some personal touches to the script that will explain the character of the hitcher. It was the same thing with leatherface. He doesn't have a nose, and he was bullied at school. Now Michael was bullied as a kid. And I doubt the script will change that much. Zombie said that this will be both a remake and a prequel.

    Micheal Myers as evil incarnate...

    by Spazwankle

The issue I always had with the original Halloweens, was that there was no reason why he was so unstoppable. Myers was after all, just a mental patient. I never bought the pure evil stuff and just seemed like an excuse to have him keep coming back. Love the original and hate bad back story, but I always thought there should be a better reason why Micheal Myers was unstoppable apart from a bad childhood.

    Chainsaw Remake Good....

    by Mr. Profit

Because it was really like a TCM 5 but only called a remake to make money and remove the stigma the bad sequels created (Even though I like TCM 2 and 3 and I also think 3 was ALREADY a remake of 1.) They fucked it up when they tried to get fancy this year and make "The Beginning" which basically is a huge NO NO with these types of movies. Leatherface born in a factory and taunted for having a fug face? Come on. We've been here with Freddy Kreuger and the whole "Son of a hundred maniacs!" routine. I don't want to see Mikey Myers whacking off to pictures of animals, because the scene where he kills the dog is forever ruined :) Again, you don't explain too much of what makes a killer tick. It makes it less scary. When will directors get this through their heads? A straight ahead remake with good acting and a quicker pace and deadlier but not too over the top kills would have been better. It would have erased the shitty sequels that came after part 4 (Which itself was the Halloween series version of a remake.) They should have given Zombie the job to remake Friday the 13th and gave this to Liebsman. I hated TCM The Beginning only because of it being predictable when I realized there would be no survivors. (And also a 6'4 280 pound killer with a chainsaw would be VERY noticible by anyone if he's hiding in their back seat.) But as far as direction, action, 70's look and feel, and kills it delivered. Leatherface hooking the bitch out of the car was the best part. I'm sure Liebsman would have made a good Halloween. Zombie and the gore porn titty shit is better suited for Crystal Lake. Make Jason the savage who jerks off to pictures of rabbits... It would explain why he hates it when people have sex in the woods.

But Holloween remake, oh-hum, not to particular, but, this story Zombie has would be great for a twinking to make it an origonal story to / by it's self. We don't really need this remake. At all. The origonal was fine.<p> For Holloween III - Season of the Witch minus Myers - I liked that in a sick / twisted cheese sort of way. had some balls to show all the kids dying and ending on such a downer / non stop note. Remake that! That will piss people off - not the remake but the fact all the kids die.

  • Jan. 12, 2007, 11:01 a.m. CST

Sounds interesting but they should just call it

    by Nabster

something else. With all the changes they are making why does it need be a remake. Zombie should just try and create his own horror icon, because as far as I am concerned this guys is not Mike Meyers. Like Quint says explaining, and rationalizing his insanity humanizes him, and takes away from his almost supernatural evilness. Still sounds like it will be a fun horror flick, just wish it was called something else.

I think I just threw up a little in my mouth

    by KingKirby

I'm absolutely stunned at how horrendous this sounds. As others have said above, this completely loses any of the original story. We don't know the reason he's a killer; we don't know how he keeps going after being stabbed and shot...he just does! How did he escape from the Sanitarium and let all the crazies go? I don't know and that scares me! Michael is an ordinary man, thin, wraith-like, whose spirit has been taken over by a ghoul. He can't be killed because he's possessed. He's not a 7 foot tall, 300 pound pervert/monster; he's maybe 6'2, 180. He does not run, he slowly stalks! Think back to Laurie in HALLOWEEN II running to get inside Haddonfield Memorial with The Shape, calmly, methodically walking after her. He's coming to get you, Laurie! Run! THAT is scary! It is fear of the unknown that we respond to. Giving him a Texas Chainsaw white trash background is not right. The whole point of HALLOWEEN is that it is our everyday world that suddenly is out of alignment because of this NON SPEAKING mask wearing creature of the shadows. He is a ghostly pale face emerging from the shadows without us knowing WHO he is or WHAT he wants or WHY is doing what he's doing. This is even worse than that that cinematic abortion TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE: THE BEGINNING; more misguided than NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD 3D; more painful than a razor blade supository. This is stupid and I will certainly tell my friends to NOT pay to see this travesty and to boycott everything Mr Zombie (if that IS his real name) does in the future.

...of the big 3 slasher icons. I just never found him scary. I dunno, maybe it's that the Halloween movies are just zombie films with only one zombie... and zombies just plain aren't scary. I wish Zombie was remaking Friday the 13th instead, though. There's a property ripe for re-imagining.

That, or he becomes an AICN TBer.

    same with Hanibal Lecter

    by dopepope

The latest book brought his evil status down somewhat by revealing certain factors that were supposed to have derived this evil in the first place. Fact is, people enjoy not knowing these things, wanting our villians to just be evil-personified without explanation. Both Myers and Lecter were like that. If this wasn't attached to the HALLOWEEN we know and love, perhaps we'd all be interested in another Rob Zombie film. And I don't doubt Zombie's love for the movie and genre. But he could be fumbling this one by screwing with a movie icon.

    First off...

    by Cellar Door

Carpenter didn't remake 'The Thing'; his version is true to original story. I've got the book and outside of the change in time (Campbell wrote it in the 50's I think), it's pretty much an exact adaptation. The earlier B&W white films are nothing like the novel. Also...gotta admit...I'm not surprised with this "reimagined" take. The original actually expected you to either think or use your own (gasp) imagination to fill in the back story; if it was even necessary. Now, film-makers think if they don't explain EVERYTHING, then the audience will be drooling and poking themselves in the eye with forks as they try to follow along for even 5 minutes. If this script is even remotely accurate than consider another truly amazing horror legacy belittled and exploited. Talking, huge, de-mystified Myers is the huge suck. And if a re-tread is the only way to go and they suck then for the love of g-string panties don't even bother with a remake!!

...and Halloween is a very fine line. I would have liked to see Zombie's take on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, or SEQUELS to Friday the 13th... or even a Day of the Dead remake (and by that I mean a similar story and theme to the original, not a personal take on Xombies)... but he's just not the guy I want trying to improve Halloween with steroids and suspense-killing expositional backstory. Even Robert Rodgriguez... who has a very different style... would have been a better choice than this. Ratner. I would rather see Ratner do a Halloween remake than Zombie.

Do we get a backstory on his mom being sexually abused

    by Doctor_Sin

by Uncle Henry at a family get-together when she was 14? And how the guy she married was actually beaten by his Vet dad, which led to a lifetime of abusing others and alcoholism? Do we also get a flashback about the porno shoot she did when she was 18 and how her redneck husband forced her into it by drugging her? Will we get to see Mr. Myers and some drinking buddies rape and kill a local Korean hooker? This is all IMPORTANT backstory to this film. We will need another prequel. Maybe a Michael Myers Family Portrait sort of thing, where we see the Puritan Ezekial Myers founding a village with his wife (and cousin), Goody Myers - and how their son is bred as pure evil due to witchcraft and incest. Periodically, we need a Gypsy fortune-teller popping up to cackle about "Legacies of Evil" and shit. Then, another prequel could be set in the post-Ice Age, when Mike Myer's ancestor fucks a jackal and births a deformed beast that is shunned by the tribe. Said beast could then rape a cavewoman and their son could grow up shoving mastodon tusks up his ass.

I have an idea for a movie....

    by SebastianHaff

Somebody should make a movie about a happy go lucky, all around decent kid. His family isn't rich, or even all that well off, but they're a close knit bunch and love each other to death. This little boy's got a good attitude towards life and he tries his hardest, even when he fails. As a teenager he's reasonably popular, well liked, has a good time with high school, and looks forward to the future. He's just an average, all American heterosexual adolescent male. Until one day he goes batshit fucking crazy and starts blowing people away with a sawed off double barrel pistol girp shotgun. He forces his girlfriend to spread her legs whil he fucks her with the barrel, climaxing with a shotgun blast to her crotch. THAT would be surprising. Anymore, whenever I see a kid get made fun of in a horror movie, I instantly (A. Kknow he's the killer, and (B. Am not afraid of the pansy douche bag. ENOUGH HUMANIZING!!! Why do all movie monsters have to be fragile pussies now??

HALLOWEEN is a classic of modern horror. If you have as much love and respect for the genre,HALLOWEEN,and John Carpenter as you claim to you will NOT give M.Myers this lame-ass,half-baked,over expositional backstory.Sure,Carpenter gave you his blessing to make your own version, but any semblance of honor and respect you may possess shoul tell you it's wrong to piss all over the basic concept.THE HORROR OF HALLOWEEN COMES FROM THE UNKNOWN/UNSEEN.Trying to validate or explain Myers takes him from being the faceless Boogeyman of legend to being just another prick with a knife and a sad story.Do what you want with the rest of the story.More power to ya.Keeping Myers himself as faithful to the original as possible is the best thing you could do for your movie. As a matter of fact being true to the source material is about the most ORIGINAL thing someone doing a remake COULD do these days.

Or is it pretty much that he fled the loony bin with just the one? It seems like his schizophrenic mask-dependency/fetish would dictate he would feel "naked", isolated, or fragile without his bagful of masks. Loomis did a shitty job in turning that kid around. At least prescribe him a "Smily Happy Mask".

    by sammicurr

Rob has made a post on his Myspace forum. Which tells me he's nervous. What should he expect. He said not to listen to "someone you don't even know" opinion. If making Michael speak, or making him 6'10 is in the's not a opinion. It's a fact. Right? Not to mention his casting decision. I't like he's trying to show us how cool he is bt only hiring genre actors. Seeing Danielle Harris, Ken Foree etc will only take me out of the movie. Whatever, I guess I'll have to wait until Aug (or whenever, since it looks like they are going to move the release date again.)

WOW!! That sounds like a turd of a script and I am 100% in agreement with everything you said Quint about why Michael Myers works the way he does. Right on! Making him that big is a huge mistake since size shouldn't convey the terror, it's all in the face or mask and body language. Seems like Zombie missed the simple elements all together. What a shame since he's such a horror fan.

  • Jan. 12, 2007, 6:28 p.m. CST

After reading almost all of this talkback

I came to a conclusion. Remakes, no matter how good they are, will always be flawed. You have an original film to compare it to. The remake doesn't stand a chance. The whole film industry is suffering due to a lack of original scripts. If Zombie said hey, I'm gonna make a movie largely inspired by Halloween, I think that would fly better. Betting on horses that have won races in the past, seems to be a solid bussiness plan. At the end of the day, Rob Zombie will get a paycheck to remake one of his favorite films as a kid. Who wouldn't want to do that?

    Shut up wolvenom...

    by JimmyLoneWolf

Here's what wolvenom said earlier: "that was the ultimate definitive version OF WHAT IS "THE THING" whatever crap your talking about that came before carpenter's THE THING should be abolished.......". First of all, the short story these films are based on is called Who Goes There, not "What is The Thing?" Second, its one thing to prefer Carpenter's REMAKE (oooh I called it a remake because it is one, what are you gonna do, tough guy?) to the original (I like it better myself), but saying Howard Hawks' The Thing from Another World is "crap" that should be "abolished"? Let me take a wild guess here: you liked the Dawn of the Dead remake better than the original didn't you? In fact, you thought the original was "crap" and had "bad effects, bad acting, and was boring" didn't you? Well kiss my ass, loser. You are not a real film fan. If you were, you wouldn't post such ignorant bullshit. People like you are the reason remakes make so much money (and consequently, are made in place of original films that could actually move the horror genre FORWARD). Newsflash: Carpenter's The Thing came out in 1982, 25 friggin years ago, and its STILL being used to justify remakes! Oh wait, its not a remake because the original film was in black and white and had no gore, therefore it doesn't exist. Now, if only YOU didn't exist...

I have a crappy memory, but I think..

    by Jme

..when the Zombie HALLOWEEN was announced, there were ample warnings that the new film would be a "re-imagining" and have little to do with the original. Remaking horror movies is a very risky business. Unfortunately, passionate and educated fans don't control the box office, 'John Q. Public' does. I loved HALLOWEEN, but personaly I have always been fonder of THE THING and IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS. I'm not sure if I'll like the new movie, but I loved the misanthropy, chaos, and anti-social attitude of Zombie's other two movies. I gotta look on the bright side, ya know...otherwise I'll end up never liking anything. EVER. AGAIN.

    by Gwai Lo

Honestly you need to stop acting like it's the end of the world because Rob Zombie is making a remake and it's not going to be exactly like the original. Judge it when it comes out and remember the 1978 movie will still exist no matter how good or bad it is. There is more justification for this kind of bitching when the director is some no name music video director, but when he has already proven himself with an excellent horror movie (Devil's Rejects) then give him the benefit of the doubt until he gives us a film to prove otherwise.

They are two entirely different fucking movies.....CARPENTER'S THE THING IS THE THING! its not thing from another world... now cape fear with deniro might be a remake because its basically the same movie, or psycho's remake with vaughn because it also is basically the same movie....... BUT CARPENTER's THING IS THE ULTIMATE DEFINATIVE VERSION!..... to call it a remake is to degrade and insult its awesomeness. Lastly, all remakes blow goats because they are remakes, but REIMAGININGS OR NEW IDEAS INSPIRED BY OLD CRAP like the thing rule. THE THING IS NOT A REMAKE IT IS INSPIRED BY crap from the past

    by shoe1985

Yes, we have the original, but since the beginning everything I have heard sounds like Rob is shitting on the series as a whole. It is his movie, but there are certain things you need to make sure don't go to far away from the original. Michael doesn't talk at all. His backstory is the same old thing that every killer has it seems. Oh no I got picked on, better go on a killing spree. He is evil, plain and simple. Not knowing why is much creepier. Now this draft makes the movie out to be a gory movie, the first Halloween had little to no blood, and it was scary. It is like Rob is going all out trailer trash wise. Got the slutty mom, check, slutty sister who will probably have a fling with her dad, check, got the kid that wants his sister, check. Yep incest all the way around. Thanks for ruining a classic.

    Carpenter's The Thing

    by shoe1985

Carpenter's version was a remake, but it was using the short story as was the original movie. So it was a remake, but not really. It took a story and did a movie on it. Yes there was a movie that did it, but not as well, and was really different.

  • Jan. 12, 2007, 10:03 p.m. CST

    by Gwai Lo

Don't get me wrong, the original Halloween is one of my favorite movies of all time. I rank the Thing even higher and even a remake of that (although it fills me with trepidation) wouldn't change that for me. I think some of these ideas sound bad, I don't particularly want to find out too much about Myers' motivations either and agree that he's scarier when he's just some unexplainable killing machine. The original Halloween was subtle and suspenseful and that doesn't seem like Zombie's style. I'm not sure what I would get out of a slicked up straight remake of the original, so anything different is more appealing to me. If I want repetitions of the original I can watch part 2 (which was actually good), or parts 4-8, which get progressively worse. Just wait and see when the movie comes out if it such an affront to the original, I can still see it being a good horror film if not a traditional Halloween movie. And you can read all that stuff into the original if you want to, Michael's mom was out on a date when he killed his sister, the slutty sister was killed by Michael post sex, and that seemed to be the motivation for Michael killing his sister at least. In fact, most of the people that get offed in the movie are having sex or getting around to it. Laurie is a virgin and she survives. I am not guaranteeing the movie will be good, I am just saying that it is really a bit of a stretch to judge it at this point because a script review doesn't live up to your impossible expectations.

  • Jan. 12, 2007, 10:08 p.m. CST

Oh yeah and re: The Thing

    by Gwai Lo

The Thing is both a remake of The Thing From Another World and an adaptation of the short story "Who Goes There". Howard Hawks is one of Carpenter's favorite directors (He also paid homage to him with Assault on Precinct 13) but Carpenter had a different interpretation of the story. They are both good films but The Thing is basically my all time favorite horror film.

Judge Dredds Dirty Undies - Good remakes

    by MrD

Or reimaginings or whatever you want to call them: 70s Invasion of the Body Snatchers, JC's The Thing, Cronenberg's The Fly, Scorsese's Cape Fear, 80s The Blob, Clooney's Ocean's 11, last year's The Hills Have Eyes. I would even add things like PJ's King Kong and the new Dawn of the Dead which, even though not as good as the originals, are still good films. I'm not sure how you'd consider different adaptations of classic works, such as Hamlet, Romeo and Juliet, Dracula, Frankenstein, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, War of the Worlds, etc, or films that are loosely inspired by another, such as DePalma's Scarface. Of course, some can quibble over which of these remakes are remakes, and which are adaptations; in this case I arbitrarily defer to popularity - more people know The Thing From Another World than Who Goes There, so I consider JC's The Thing a remake, even though it is closer to the source material. OTOH, Little Shop of Horrors was clearly an adaptation of the Broadway show, so I don't count that as a remake of the original film.

  • Jan. 13, 2007, 1:19 p.m. CST

    by reflecto

The minute I heard he was doing this I knew it would be a disaster. Rob Zombie has NEVER made a good film. He talks a good game about '70s horror and exploitation film and he hires character actors like Foree or Moseley or Trejo who we all love, and then people give him a lot of free fucking passes! 1000 Corpses was the worst film I have ever seen, and Devil's Rejects was a tired pastiche of a bunch of much better films done in the most bloated, overwrought way (he even played "Freebird") with the worst dialogue of his "career." To Rob Zombie, "gritty and real" only means "white trash trailer park creeps" and "hard-talkin' '70s character actors." It's pathetic. I don't understand why genre fans, who know better, keep apologizing for "Rob" when they know this to be true.

    Here's what I would've done....

    by Doctor_Sin

Show some Michael Myers childhood, but he's in a distressingly 'normal' lower- middle-class environment. His dad suffers from a self-defeating sense of failure in everything. His mom is an alcoholic, prone to violence. Something happens (not known) and the mother dies. The father is arrested, but protests his innocence. Is he guilty or not? Mike ends up in a foster home, whose parents send him to a religious-based school. Something happens at school that causes him to become expelled and worry his family. His nature is handled old-school "Omen" style. is he evil? Is it something supernatural? Are the evil happenings coincidence? Somehow contrast the foster parents' "Our family is cursed with failure" belief with Loomis' "The boy is pure evil" theory. Mike is a pawn in this conflict. Mike's sis gets savagely butchered on Halloween. Parents think Mike did it. Everyone thinks 'weird and crazy' Mike did it. He gets institutionalized. He has a history of short-term escapes. Some violent deaths (incl. his step-parents) occur during his escapes (always around Halloween), but no one can prove anything - it all appears coincidence. Loomis is more and more intrigued by Myers, who never speaks but his actions 'speak' for him. Massive break-out at the loony bin. Lots of dangerous people are out there. Manhunt begins. As crazies are rounded up, the bodies pile up. Who is the killer? We all know it's Mike. Loomis knows it's Mike. Loomis discovers Mike's natural father died in prison - because other prisoners hated him with no explanation. It was a vicious killing - Loomis thinks more out of fear than aggression. Important - NO RETCON - Laurie is not related to Mike. But it is hinted that she may be younger sister to Mike's sister's boyfriend. Halloween comes. Mike's hometown has been peaceful in the ensuing years. Older folks scare younger kids with Halloween 'bogeyman' stories. All nuts rounded up but Mike. Loomis is obsessed with him, knowing violence is imminent. Laurie is stalked. The nightmare begins. End.

Adult Mike is NEVER seen without his mask. It is explained by Loomis that "there is no humanity beneath that facade, that pretense of reality" or something else kind of ominous. Mike has never been unmasked partly because Loomis is afraid of what he'll find beneath it.

Whether you were being an ass or not, it was a fair point that often gets raised whenever a remake rears its ugly head. The truth is that MOST don't work, but there's enough that do to justify giving them a chance (especially when the original isn't all that great or very dated). And this doesn't count all the classic films that are remakes or/inspired by/sharing the source of foreign or silent/obscure films.

Am I the only one who's completely sick of the direction the horror genre has gone? There hasn't been a compelling, original, suspense horror film since Blair Witch. It's all become a furthering of the slasher genre, which has always been blatant Jesus lovefests. I mean, who dies in these films? Those who have premarital sex, sexually active girls, those who do drugs, rational science types who refuse to believe in the irrational, black people, etc. If it hasn't happened already, soon you'll see flaming gay characters get the axe (literally) along with women who had abortions, and people who voted to Kerry and Nader. And Gibson's horror flick already went after the Jews. And finally, there can only be one Texas Chain Saw, and it already came out 30 years ago. I'm sorry all these other filmmakers couldn't preemptively rip off the film earlier, but such is life. They need to fuckin' deal with it already.

    by darthbinks1220

The source material that is the '78 film was sublime. A competant remake would further the focus of Carpenter's masterpiece. Zombie is 'fleshing out' a completely different film. I agree with Quint. Lose the Shatner mask, and don't call it 'Halloween'. It's sad. McDowall could've played an outstanding Loomis. He'll never even get the chance w/ this drivel. This director's path is not inspired. He's catering to the lowest-common denominator. Memo to Mr. Zombie..... Halloween 101: Loomis is central. The Shape lies omniously on the fringes. Splatterfests have no place here.

    by Doctor_Sin

Binks, let's make a younger Loomis (in our scenario) the psychiatrist for Mike's natural mom (in my plot). That gives Loomis an obsession with the whole Myers family. We could learn about Mike through Loomis' digging and obsessive investigating. Mike become the shadowy realm at the fringes of reality. Is Loomis just crazily obsessed or is Mike more than he seems?

Dr._Sin: Your ideas are fresh and still Halloween.

    by darthbinks1220

The Carpenter original always had an unexplained vagueness. That's partially why it's so creepy. Any screenwriter walks a tightrope in uncovering some of the mystery. Still, at least your premises don't alter the central concept. On a side note, I bought the Halloween: 25 Years of Terror DVD recently. Zombie was featured prominently. Rob spoke about why the original worked while the sequels sputtered artistically. He really seemed to know his Halloween. That's what makes Quint's report so surprising. I hope we're all wrong about this remake. I genuinely want to see a film that does some justice to the original.

    by darthbinks1220

On the Halloween: 25 Years of Terror DVD, Zombie comes across knowledgable and respectful toward Carpenter's masterwork. If you watch the You Tube snippet, the musician/director arrogantly belittles the '78 classic as dated and unrealistic. He knocks Pleasance's warnings of Myers as superficial. The former rockstar believes Michael is the focus, and the audience needs to learn firsthand how the boogeyman came to be. Guess Quint's script is genuine. Ugh! Michael Myers and Purposeful Ambiguity

    by Felix Buckman

I’m de-lurking after several years -- years, mind you -- to chime in here. Just as ‘Godzilla’ was an expression of fear about nuclear war in the wake of WWII, ‘Halloween’ was an expression of fear of the then-newly-entrenched suburbanism that grew out of the Baby Boom. Both became iconic because they captured those fears so thoroughly. After thirty years of middle-class expansion and flight away from urban areas, people found themselves away from the crowded, yet familiar, enclaves of the cities -- away from Chinatown, Little Italy, the old Irish neighborhood. Their neighbors weren’t people they saw every day in the hallway or on the stoop. They hid behind well-draped windows across green moats of manicured lawn. ‘Halloween’’s power to frighten came from one simple assertion: That kid next door? The one who looks like every other kid? The one you vaguely know lives there but you don’t really know him or his family? Well, that kid snapped last night... and he killed his own sister. He’s capable of anything. He could’ve been any kid. Even yours. The Shape’s mask reenforces this assertion -- it’s blank and devoid of color, allowing you, the viewer, to assign any face to that space. His build? Wholly average. Average, as in, he could be any guy. Not a bodybuilder. Not a former professional wrestler. The kid next door. Giving him a voice literally gives him a voice figuratively, thus rendering this critical ambiguity even more impotent. Zombie’s approach is to eviscerate the very power of the ‘Halloween’ premise just as effectively, and I am not employing hyperbole here, as turning ‘Halloween’ into a musical, set in Oklahoma, with Nathan Lane as Loomis. Zombie, indeed.

Scary, not scary, how about a different spin?

I could care less what did or didn't make Myers scary in the original. The annoying thing about this script (and the idiotic comments about it) is why bother doing a 'reimagining' of a good film and muck it down in horror cliche? What about that pesky imagination part? Halloween is a great project for Zombie because the name is recognizable and it should make money regardless of how shitty it is. It's no surprise that a total fraud of an artist like Zombie is making a total fraud of a movie.

...Putting aside this obsession Hollywood has for remakes, and the fact that more and more talkbackers are getting silently resigned to it rather then boycotting each of these lazy, inept attempts at filmaking, why the fuck are we even discussing this shit? Halloween is a classic horror film that works today as much as it did on release, and in no way needs a remake. No matter what Rob shitbrains Zombie says, its all an exercise in making money on the back of the origionals success. Burn in hell Hollywood.

    by TheLastAngryMan

...As i remember saying back in a earlier talkback about the Wickerman remake (Hollywood has no shame), Quint, Carpenters The Thing film is not a remake. to remake movies like 'Silent Night, Deadly Night', 'My Bloody Valentine', 'Prom Night' and others. I hate the word "reimagining"

    by reflecto

It's always a pretentious term for "we're shamelessly taking the name and/or concept and raping it." There is a way to do a decent remake of "Halloween," I know that now after seeing what Zombie is NOT doing. But his fanbase can't just say, "oh put in the original movie if you want to." It's not about that. This isn't like Rob Zombie is taking away a few actors and a few ideas, he's mutilating the entire core concept of the Shape, that he is a blank slate of evil, that he is silent and sleek, that there is no concrete explanation, that he came from normal roots and is stalking "normal" suburbia. Turning this into another "look, I cast Ken Foree and Bill Moseley, love me you guys, love me!" Redneck Psychotic Hootenanny is fucking retarded. Not every movie can be a warmed-over rehash of "The Hills Have Eyes" and "Last House On The Left," Rob. Not every movie SHOULD be "Last House On The Left."

    by Mattapooh

Also, the idea of a Hellraiser remake makes me physically sick. That movie is one of the most original, interesting and disturbing films of all time. Judging by how badly the Halloween "reimagining" is coming off in the hands of a self-proclaimed fan of the original (which may be true, but he obviously has no understanding of why it was good to begin with), Hellraiser hasn't got any semblance of a chance.

The sequels were screwed up enough, then H2O selectively ignored some of the sequels. As for Ressurrection, I don't know what the hell they were thinking. I especially don't know why Curtis bothered coming back at all. Especially considerig the lame-ass way they killed her off.

I think that's why so many are angry about this early script of Zombies - if this remake sucks, then the Halloween franchise is pretty much guaranteed to always suck. <br> <br> My favorite thing to come out of H2O was Conan interviewing somebody from it and saying he'd be angry if there wasn't water all over the place.

Zombie is a credit to his name

    by VoxMillennium

For only a braindead person would come up with a script like this. I think that a backstory to Michael Myers is feasable, but you would have to be very dilligent in the approach as indeed less is more and particularly in this case explaining him away with 3rd rate cheap psychology is the worst way to treat him. I would make a movie about his past, but without explaining the evil. For example I would show his birth without any of the usual trimmings of a rainy night with a thunderstorm going in. I would show his birth (on Halloween night of course) as an event where the mother nearly dies and when finally he's born, he doesn't cry like normal babies but simply breathes and when the nurse first picks him up talking baby talk with a smile on her face, the baby suddenly opens its eyes that are revealed to be coal black and looks at her. Camera switches between his eyes and hers and her smile freezes and is replaced by a look of deep fear and she quickly puts him back in his crib. End of birth scene. In this way you tell a backstory without taking a way the mythic qualities of the character that made him so great in the first place.

People are confusing "different" with "good."

    by HotblackDesiato

Just because Zombie's version is different doesn't automatically make it good. He can re-imagine and change all that he wants. I, personally, do not care. Halloween is my favorite horror film of all-time, but I love remakes and am fine with this being done. BUT I want it done right. Different isn't automatically good. These ideas, while just being essentially a blueprint, are still stupid, immature and make this sound like Devil's Rejects 1.5: The Haddonfield Clan. At the beginning of Carpenter's film Michael's parents didn't look like white trash to me. Why not explore a normal child in a good family with a good life, and watch something go horribly inexplicably wrong with him?? THAT'S scary. Explaining it away like this is lazy, rote and just plain dumb. This sounds like the sort of script you can whip up after lunch and finish before dinner. Basic color-by-numbers crap, and another phoney Rob Zombie white trash sleazefest. The guy tries so fucking hard that all he ends up with is white noise. What a douche.

In spite of franchise purists’ expectations, Zombie has made HALLOWEEN his own..." And Tim Burton made Planet of the Apes his own as well. Thanks for not liking something crappy

It gives me faith that at least some at AICN can still distinguish between crap and craptastic.

Even if this is the shooting draft

    by hktelemacher

Scripts are sometimes hard to get a handle on - good ones can sometimes read poorly and bad ones can seem pretty good. With dialogue like Zombie's it takes somebody like William Forsythe or a Ken Foree to give it any kind of life or vitality. If I had read the DEVIL'S REJECTS script, all of Wydell's lines would have sounded and seemed just as cliched as they really were but a guy like Forsythe comes in and makes you forget all that. Say what you will, I think Zombie has a leg up on both casting and cutting. He seems to have a fantastic rapport with his actors and peppers his movies with really cool performances, even if it does sometimes seem like nostalgic genre stunt casting. And if you look at REJECTS, two of the coolest musical montages I've seen (especially in a horror movie) - the Peckinpah-esque "Midnight Rider" title sequence and the great "To Be Treated" bounty hunters descend on Charlie's sequence - were both culled from individual scenes that, as far as the deleted scenes on the DVD show, were just rambling, stagnant bullshit not originally conceived as montage. Based on one script review from the always hypercriticial-unless-Peter-Jackson-shot-it Quint, I'm still giving Zombie the benefit of the doubt that the flick will work as a Rob Zombie movie, which is what I'm most excited about. I could care less about how faithful it is the classic original and the crappy, made up as they went along mythology of the franchise. I want to see Zombie's take on a slasher film, and maybe the ultimate slasher film at that. Since this was announced I was kind of hoping he would piss all over the source material as long as it WORKS. And based on a script review of an unknown draft and the fact that the cast is strong and Zombie's surge in ability and sensibility between his first two movies - I'm still optimistic.

    Fangoria's review...

    by Yogsoggoth

Since when did Fangoria start doing script reviews? Seems to me Zombie called in a favor or offered them some special coverage to help stop the bad press. Anywho, Fangoria just confirmed that Quint was reviewing that actual script and I guess this movie will, in fact, suck balls. Is anyone surprised?

Bloody Disgusting is saying this has been delayed for rewrites and that Lidy Booth is Laurie Strode.

    Luv That Zombie !

    by darkmetal

I like the fact that Rob Zombie is remaking Halloween. The review lets me believe that it will be a prequel. I don't think I would have put Sheri Moon in this one and let total unknowns assume the roles. The reviewer Quint didn't like some things about the script but Rob Zombie always has had a different outlook on things. I would wait and see the movie before I made a decision on whether it's good or bad. With two successful films under his belt I bet this movie is bizarre and will be a hit !

Halloween: 25 Years of Terror DVD

    by MissionMan8

I loved the home movie footage of a young Michael Myers with his back to us, waving the camera away at the beginning of the documentary. When I caught that, I thought the remake should definitely begin the same way. We should never get a clear view of Michael's face. Figurately, his face should always be masked even when he's not wearing one.

    Myers speaks...

According to FANGORIA's article Myers speaks only a single word of dialog. So let me guess...since Laurie's childhood nickname is "Boo" we can expect him to utter that word when he encounters her towards the end in some corny-ass attempt at an 'OH SHIT...'moment.Don't worry if you miss the line though it'll be the same word the audience will be yelling at the screen.Just a prediction.

You really think the same audience that made Stomp The Yard # 1 last weekend will boo Zombie's HALLOWEEN?

I think Zombie confused Michael Myers with Jason

    by RavenRules

Sure, it had brief moments of topless nudity, but Halloween was never about being a sleazy exploitation flick. If Zombie wanted to make another sleazy horror movie, he should've picked a series that pretty much soaks in sleaze and loves it: "Friday the 13th". The 'Lifetime made for TV' backstory Rob gave Michael would've fit Jason much better, also. The thing that *MADE* Michael Myers evil is: he had pretty much the perfect childhood, loving parents, and one day he just snapped and killed his sister. He was pure evil, with no reason. Now Rob is just turning him into another sympathetic wimp of a serial killer. Hell, he might as well just call him "Mikey".

    This makes me sad...

    by incomplete0128

I can only hope that it will get better. I hate that he made it more into a joke than waht it could have been. It could have been an amazing movie if thought out properly! Casting Daniel Harris was a god move, but come on, you would have to find a genius to be able to pull of Dr. Loomis the way Donald Pleasance did! I will probably see it, but only bc I am a HUGE fan of the original and bc Michael Myers is my hero, but I doubt it will do much justice to John Capenter's original!

    Horrible beyond Whore-able...

    by laurieannielindaforever

Just read this "early draft script"...horrible, horrible....did i mention this script is fucking HORRIBLE... yeah, yeah...i "get it" that things have changed from it and all of that...but this is still a "blue print" of things to come..and the essence of what is in this no talent shit of a script takes it to the unfathomable realms of GARBAGE... i really tried to keep an "open mind"...seeing that there was no stopping this train wreck of stupidity from happening...but the dialogue, the whole "White Trash" abusive family, stripper Mom thing and the incestual innuendo in the script is so sad...and just more than that it's just dumb and bad.... and it seems that every male in the script comes complete with the Long Hair, trailer trash look...and the girls dialogue is an insult the essence of the original three from the Classic Halloween....this realm being "re-imagined" but another sign of the oncoming of the Apocolypse to me..a world where nothing is Sacred anymore....this isn't a's an "UN-Imagining"...i thank the gods that i'm not alone in my opinion that this "film" is just completely and utterly an insult to the one and only original Halloween....i shudder to think this will be a huge success...and parts of the trailer made me burst out laughing...the "loomis" line "the eyes of a pscyhopath"...made me chortle in how utterly stupid it sounded and in sheer awe of disgust....sigh...

    Read the script also...

    by screamster101

I'm sorry, but I like it. It has a totally different view. That's what I like about it. It's not the same shit. I think this will be good.

    Quint, you are an idiot.

    by MonsterVision101

In the original script of Halloween, Michael Myers was written into the script as "The Shape". Rob Zombie is doing everything he can to try to take it back to the original script. For you to just read a script, and start writing about something you have no knowledge in shows your ignorance. I suggest you do a little research on Myers, or possibly even watch the Halloween 25 Years DVD to get some education on the character that is Michael Myers, aka.."THE SHAPE". Anybody that slanders this film, and talks badly about Rob Zombie doesn't know jack about any type of horror genre. They also probably thought Quentin Tarantino, and Rodriguez were stupid, and 'unrealistic' when they wrote GRINDHOUSE. For those people, I also suggest they actually look up into what a grindhouse is. The Biggest, and Smartest Horror Fan Ever.. Joe Rob Riggs.
