Charlie Kaufman's SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK gets some top talent!!

Published at:  Jan 11, 2007 7:51:39 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with some promising news for us Charlie Kaufman fans out there. He's sinking into the director's chair for the first time with his script SYNECDOCHE, NEW YORK, about a theater director who decides to put on a play in a gigantic warehouse with an immaculate recreation of a city in New York for its stage.

So far, Philip Seymour Hoffman is in talks to play the theater director, Catherine Keener is in talks to play his first wife, Michelle Williams for his second wife, Samantha Morton as his "sometimes lover," and Tilda Swinton for Keener's best friend and mentor to her and Hoffman's daughter.

New Kaufman is always of interest and that is now compounded with the fact that he's directing his own material for the first time. Spike Jonze is producing. The cast is great, Kaufman is great, so that means the movie will be great, right? Let's hope so!!!

    Tilda Swinton is Hoffman's daughter?

    by wondermutt

Only in a Charlie Kaufman film would this make sense.

    Brilliant Cast!

    by klaus herzog

Sounds excellent. Keener (one of my favourite actresses) and Swinton are Kaufman veterans and Hoffman will no doubt be a great Kaufman hero. Can'T wait for this and will see it opening day. Being John Malkovich is probably my favourite movie of all time, with "Adaptation" not far behind. Shame Jonze isn't directing though.

    Swinton

    by supertoyslast

I don't think she's Hoffman's daughter. It reads to me as "Swinton plays the mentor to Keener's and Hoffman's daughter". Presumably the daughter is not yet cast.

More Kaufman means more great, and I'm looking forward to seeing if he can direct as well as he writes.

    by klaus herzog

Seriously, he knocked this one out of the park. He is a good actor in general, which people tend to forget because he starred in so many shitty Bruckheimer turds. Guess GHOST RIDER won't improve his reputation either.
But for every CON AIR, I give you LEAVING LAS VEGAS, for every NATIONAL TREASURE, there is WILD AT HEART.

Hmm...have faith in Kaufman to do something interesting, but the skeleton of the thing sounds really familiar, as in, it sounds like a thinly re-made Fellini's "8 1/2." We'll see.
