Joss Whedon To Join Harold Ramis & J.J. Abrams In THE OFFICE Director’s Chair?? Plus?? A Glimpse Of BUFFY 8.2!!

Published at:  Jan 09, 2007 7:56:03 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

We all know the great Harold Ramis (“Caddyshack,” “Groundhog Day”) directed “The Office’s” knee-slapper of an hourlong Christmas episode.

Way back on Halloween, Newsday reported (and TV Guide confirmed) that J.J. Abrams (“Mission: Impossible III”) would direct a February episode of the sitcom.

Now comes word that a third feature director, Joss Whedon, may be directing an episode set to air next month as well. Monday, a blog called Televisionary.com got wind of this. The Whedonesque website picked up the item. Whedon himself posted beneath the item early this morning, and denied nothing.

In other Whedon news, comicscontinuum.com recently posted the supercool cover for the second issue of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” the new Whedon-authored funnybook that will follow Ms. Summers' “8th-season” adventures. Find it here.

what is the point of these guest directors?

    by toe jam

one of the distinctive things about "the office" is its minimalist style. it's shot like a mockumentary, so there's hardly any room for directors to get artistic. must be a vanity thing, especially for these guys, each of whom hasn't had a notable project in a long while.

in actual fact, when pound sand was trying to get gotta eat going he really inspired me and proved that despite some complaining and nonbelievers, you can actually create your own catchphrase mania.thus, I tried so hard with "dorothy's taint" but it caught fire so fast is just burned itself out, like all the greats before it: too silver, too soon, nipples on, flames on, lucas raped my...ALL TO HELL WITH IT! Did you just compare Serenity to George Lucas's Star Wars trilogy? If your referring to the old one sure, I can see that with his deep character development, maybe your not aware that there is a small little series called Firefly that has already established most of these characters a bit, quite well in fact. Now if your comparing it to the new trilogy, you show your ignorance. Now run along now.... go on...shoo....

    guest directors

    by trader groucho 2

The Office, while minimalist, is the hot "It" show right now. Jobs even grabbed a clip to show off new hardware at MacWorld this week. And you know these directors want an opportunity to work with and develop relationships with the actors, esp. Steve Carrel and Rainn Wilson. It's how the industry works. Relationships.

    No Office:The Musical

    by inwosuxred

Sorry Joss, you can't "turn the medium on its head" or use silly little gimmicks for the Office. No point in any of these people being there, because the format is rigid and nobody will top Feig or any of the other regular directors and nobody will make it their own. More stunt casting and less stunt directing, please. At least bring back Tim Meadows. Although one of these guest directors will probably get a directing emmy for "lowering themselves" because why reward hard work when you can reward some asshole for jumping on a fast moving bandwagon and contributing as little as possible?

The reason Herc uses television notation for this is because other editors haven't realized yet that this is a comic book. Otherwise it would go into AICN comic section. I'm sorry but that column is a clusterfuck of New Line proportions.

    by oisin5199

the guy claims to be a Joss fan, but fundamentally DOESN'T get the man's work. I couldn't think of a worse fit for Galactica. If Joss wanted to do a show like Galactica, don't you think he would have done it when he had his own show in a spaceship? He already did fantastic work on a show that was its own thing. If there's anything Joss 'shoulda done' it's XMen 3. But no, Fox wanted to rush the damn thing out to satisfy their petty thing with Singer. Anyway, I can see why any director would want to take a crack at directing the Office. I don't think Joss would be trying to turn anything on its head, but just have fun directing good comedic actors in great scenes with great dialogue. Besides, it's like directing a good stage play. And damn, I can't wait for this new Buffy comic series, plus Joss' run on Runaways, and the next Serenity comic, and the rest of the final Astonishing X-Men arc, for that matter. All this comicy goodness almost makes up for the absence of Whedon tv.

    by bloo

you could actually make a "flashback" office work since most of it is "flashback" anyways like real reality shows are. You see something happen and you hear someone talking about why they did it or what not. I would laugh if on the Abrams show Dwight was tied up to a chair thanks to Jim or something adn Jim and Dwight and the camera crew tell us how that happened. I think it would work better on this type of show then anyother Abrams show

    The Immortal

    by jackbristow

Checked out the preview pages of Buffy 8.1, and there's a great bit about this (if you remember, in one of the last Angel episodes, Angel and Spike go to Rome to seek out Buffy, who is supposedly dating "The Immortal.") Buffy states that there are two other Slayers acting as Buffy decoys in order to protect her, one of which is partying very publicly in Rome with the Immortal. I guess it worked out that SMG couldn't appear in that Rome episode.

    by nabster

The US version of the Office is simply fantastic. Well the second and third season have been awesome when it has come into its own. I actually thought the Firefly movie was pretty enjoyable, not a sci fi classic or anything. On the other and I though the Firefloy show was over-rated, Joss Whedons writing just is not my cup of tea, I don't find excessive cheeky sarcasm intelligent writing. He just seems to be a one trick pony writer in that respect, but I will still watch the Office as its one of the few good sitcoms around. And JJ gets a lot of free points for Lost, sorry that show is fantastico!

The idea that a credible and very established director would be "jumping" onto this success train is just silly. But that's really cute that you think The Office (american edition) would really "make" Joss' career. *silly rabbit*
