Savior Of The Universe!! King Of The Impossible!! FLASH GORDON To SciFi!!

Published at:  Jan 07, 2007 2:08:40 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

We’ve been hearing about a new “Flash Gordon” series for SciFi, but I think we held off from posting on it because details were sorely lacking.

And I guess they’re still lacking. SciFi still hasn’t even hired showrunners to create the series bible, according to a new post on geekmonthly.com.

Read more of Flash’s history here.

“Soap” and “All in the Family” for $11 per season? “NewsRadio” for $15 per season? “Seinfeld” for $18 per season? “Rescue Me” for $18.25 per season?

    Yack - Agreed

    by playhouse

Not that I have anything to do with the production of the show. So my agreement is rather moot. That said, yes, Flash Gordon deserves to be the flashy (no pun intended), high class B-grade movie serial/action-adventure yarn we've all been craving. (Definitely with the art deco design, like RobinP was pointing out.) A tone not quite as campy as the '80s movie. More akin to Indiana Jones, where the serious themes are blanketed in a lightweight, fun atmosphere. They can resurrect Buck Rogers for a more serious sci-fi adventure (and one that's not as dark as BSG). Flash Gordon was always meant to be a raucous good time.

    by demosthenes2

I don't understand attributing BSG's dwindling ratings to its darkness. 24 is dark as hell and a massive hit. The only reason I can think of is that people are turned off by the notion of something called Battlestar Galactica on the SciFi Channel. Of course the ratings going down; well perhaps fans of the craptacular Stargate franchise don't want anything smart. In fact I wouldn't be caught dead watching anything else on the network, so it may not exactly appeal to most of the network's fanbase as it's not simpleminded escapism.

Maybe it will be different since Flash is a football player and not a rocket scientist (like Crichton was, literally). Then again, Crichton was like a really smart football player. I've seen scifi advertise this, but just the title. I'm wondering how lame it could be. And Zombie, Children of Men has had many talkbacks for reviews and stuff. Have you missed them? I'm looking forward to seeing it, still. And the Fountain still seems to provoke a strong emotional reaction for you. Just hearing the word 'fountaint' and you start vomiting out your 'I Heart Rachel Weisz' bullshit. It owns you, admit it. And I got the gorgeous graphic novel for Christmas. The Fountain is still the most brilliant film I've seen in a long, long time. I'm sorry you've been left behind and your fragile psyche can't handle it - that's why you kick and scream like a child at the mere mention of its name. You're worse than Kai was with the word 'Serenity' last year.

Was pretty good in concept, weak in execution, with a scene or two that worked masterfully well, but an ending that left too many holes unresolved. It would have been hailed as a masterpiece about thirty years ago. Today, it's a pretty well executed Twilight Zone episode.

    good point monster2...

    by dragon-lord

What I am saying is that CHILDREN OF MEN actually doesn't say anything new in science fiction or movies for that matter. So many major plot points in the movie are just put out there with no real world justification and we as the audience are supposed to just buy it as part of the setup. For example, the whole racial intolerance/segregation of peoples issue in CoM is just patently absurd to us today, isn't it? Thirty years ago, movies like CoM (and even the pretentious drivel called CRASH) might have been saying something relevant, interesting, worth talking about. But today? Come now. Only someone like Haggis would think that anything in CRASH was relevant in the real world. Similarly, I bought the "we've gone infertile" premise (though we needed to know why by the end, ahem) as the central premise of the movie. But all the rest of it was trumped up for dramatic purposes...because honestly...we wouldn't really be behaving this way would we? If this were REALLY to happen, the US would launch a biogenetic "Manhattan Project" to solve it, through cloning, artificial insemination, human/animal husbandry, genetic manipulation/therapy, etc. But this movie was designed as a wonderful "small" film, with the simple goal of getting the new Eve to safety. That premise has enough for a Twilight Zone episode, so they added the other stuff to get it up to two hours...and honestly, if you think about it even a little, it's really forced and doesn't really make sense does it? We wouldn't really be acting this way would we? The best sci-fi shows us a mirror to ourselves so we learn just what might happen if we go too far...like the original MATRIX or 1984. Now, that book/film echoes every time a Stalinist dictator (or administration) comes to power. Though I enjoyed CoM, I really don't think anything from that movie will echo in the future. However, given the choice I'll take a dozen smartly written films (though flawed) attempts like CoM over Universal's garbage franchise films like VAN HELSING any day. :)

    by kai_mah'gra

...... - Serenity sucked massive Warthog balls - on this, there simply can be no debate. There's numbers and figures everywhere to prove it. There's was even a paper published in the Scientific American just entirely devoted to the study of its supreme suckage. The jury's still out on the Fountain, though; but no debate on that other putridity - we're beyond that now........

FLASH GORDON would be great for Sci Fi if handled well

    by spyguy

BSG is tanking because of its excessive doom-and-gloom, but I think a non-campy, updated FLASH GORDON could work really well. The character has name-recognition with Gen-Xers and the basic story premise is solid, sci-fi adventure.

So, how many AICN Talkbackers do I have to sacrifice in the name of Ming the Merciless to make this series happen so I can write for it? No offense, guys...It's just business.

    by nohubris

...BSG by following the forward moving and thinking "24" model rather than the LOST model BSG has adopted recently. I like the Indiana Jones model too, which is kind of like "24" in that the hero is responding to a "clear and present danger" while the clock is ticking.

    major plot hole 2

    by dragon-lord

Note that the US is taken out of the movie by a ridiculous civil war conceit. Honestly. We happen to descend into anarchy because we can't breed for what the world will expect to be a short while? Even if we just had to clone ourselves for a while, we already have that technology available to prolong the human race. So, the US disappearing from the world stage is just a device to make what happens in this British tale relevant. However, I don't think it was necessary. If we just assumed what was happening in Britain was happening in the US, then the sheer fact that Eve was born in England was all that was needed to make the story UK centric. The rest of that outlandish setup wasn't needed at all, imho.

    by nohubris

Spiderman was great and managed to be fun, while having that grandiose, operatic feel to it with deep emotions the audience could feel to accompany the sweeping action. Although I agree with B.E.T., IMHO Batman was not as strong in the emotional depth department by comparison and relied more on big action. The Spiderman serious-and-fun balance could work for Flash Gordon's tone IMO.

I liked the pinball machine. You dropped a quarter in it, and it'd laugh at you. Then when you pressed the start button, you'd hear Klytus say, "Emperor Ming waits." Or possibly "Awaits." And Ming would say this and that as you played. Tough pinball machine for me, though. Or maybe I'm just not very good at pinball machines.

When the floating robot thing in the movie said, "Prisoners, bounce below me to the presence of Emperor Ming," or whatever it was he said, that line remined me of Evil Otto, the bouncing smiley face from the Berzerk video game.

There were some deadly serious DS9 episodes...

    by nohubris

...which were tremendous. It's not the seriousness that's problematic but the execution. Season One of BSG pulled people in because of the writing and the big event of the destruction of the colonies. I think if they had pulled from "24" and had a big, overarching event to respond to each season, it would be easier for certain viewers would stay connected to the serious tone. Also, check out the WISEGUY DVDs and you'll see they even had a two big event arcs in a season. For example, Vinnie was up against mobster Sonny Steelgrave for half a season and Malthusian Mel Profit for another half season. Having new "Armageddon situations," as opposed to stretching out a singular one, helped viewers remained drawn in despite the serious tone IMHO.

Humor - Baltar has consistently provided alot of the humor and could continue doing so in a rogue fleet arc.Big Event Arc - Mind you, to work the big event arc would have to last a full season like "24" or as 2 half season arcs like WiseguyCylons - Cool idea about the Cylons disappearing for awhile. The other thing to add is the FINAL FIVE coming to the forefront and making the Cylons more viscous and ferocious than they've ever been.

Stephen Somers movie vs SciFi Channel TV show

    by triumph poops!

I was still under the impression that Sommers was going to do a big budget movie version of FLASH -- in fact the last time I was over at Universal Studios Theme Park and on the tram ride, at one point on the overhead monitors it literally cut to a clip OF Sommers talking about FLASH and how it was going to be his next big thing. On the other hand, SciFi Channel IS owned by Universal too, so maybe behind the scenes Sommers decided to bail on the project and Universal simply said "Well we have to do SOMETHING with this property. We still have the license on it and we shelled out good money for it. So SOMEONE is gonna do SOMETHING with it before it lapse!." Maybe it'll even turn out that Sommers passed on doing a movie BUT a bunch of his preproduction work will be used for the show -- heck, maybe he'll even be an Executive Producer on it or something. As to Sommers himself, I liked the MUMMY movies and, yes, I guess I'm one of the few who really liked VAN HELSING. So I'd still like to see a big screen version happen. But I think what really happened here is that the Flash movie got back burnered by Sommers in favor of his WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE remake -- which I think is a coproduction between Paramount and Dreamworks ala WAR OF THE WORLDS, complete Spielberg even exec producing. According to IMDB that movie is still on and they list whats-her-name, the girl who was Lady Heather on CSI and was on the OC as starring...

    The movie was laughably bad

    by doc_strange

I'd seen it in theaters when I was a kid and it seemed cool back in the day. However, I just watched it on TV recently and it had to be some of the most unintentionally funny shit I've ever seen. The bird guys flying and getting shot down was hilarious, but then again so was that whole scene. Then the guy who played Flash, that is really an accomplished actor. Best things about the movie? Ming and Queen doing the theme song. Seriously, I had seen the original series on video and even the sparkler ship and the special FX back from the 40's were on par with the FX here. I understand it's supposed to be a fun show/movie, whatever. But as someone pointed out, it should be more like Indiana Jones in tone. Personally, I'd like to see what they could do with Buck Rogers, except no one except for rednecks are named Buck anymore, especially not deep space astronauts.

The cinematography in the Serenity movie was horrible compared even to the TV series, or the work Joss has done on Buffy/Angel. I don't know what happened or why, but even from the trailers you could tell it was framed by a retard. It looked WORSE than bad TV and, again, I don't understand the how/why/who given the topflight people Joss has on hand and the previously stellar work he's done. The ZOIC FX were pretty damn good overall...though the ship still looks like a lame duck. ;)

    BSG Ratings

    by playhouse

Anyone think - or mention - that BSG might be doing poorly in the ratings because of the decision to make it a "fall" show rather than the usual mid-season or mid-summer show it has been in the past? At lot more to compete with over the fall, shows viewers normally watched and watched when BSG wasn't around. That does make for quite a difference.

Possible reasons why BSG is tanking

    by spyguy

When the series first started, you rooted for the characters. They had their asses seriously kicked by the Cylons and were fighting like hell just to stay alive, which made you like and respect them. At somewhere down the line, though, the heroes became the villains...Roslin started rigging elections and conspiring with Adama to hide Athena's baby, the Chief beat the shit out of Callie because he had "issues" to deal with, and Apollo and Starbuck were so wrapped up with their own drama that they had to beat the shit out of each before embracing in a loving hug right in front of their respective loyal spouses.

Sure, these types of things make their characters more flawed and human, but would you honestly want to hang out with people like this every week? Judging from the ratings, it seems less and less people would...

    RE: Why BSG is tanking...

    by jimmy rabbitte

You're absolutely right about the state of the main characters. Seems like every one of them has become so flawed, that it's hard to find reasons to like them. Also, for a couple of episodes of season 3 the writers seemed to catch 'Lost Disease' ,where we are forced to endure nothing but a bunch of flashbacks. I like BSG and I hope it survives the rumors of cancellation; but if they don't get the story-lines together and start moving forward soon it ain't gonna... Someone better tell Eick and Moore to forget the 'Caprica' series and start paying more attention to the show that's already on the air.

    Who Says BSG is Tanking?

    by darfurontherocks

All of these characters have flaws. And yet we still perversely root for Baltar?!!! I understand some of the gripes about the season. However, the problem is that we expect EVERY episode to drive the grand narrative on and be on par with the season finales.... I love ST:TNG. Yet, we all had to endure the "D Troy" episodes followed up by the "LaForge finds love....again" episodes! We still regard that series as a classic because of the few Borg and Romulan story arcs... People should chill out tad....

    Tanking?

    by jimmy rabbitte

You make a good point about the type of stuff we had to endure on ST:TNG. Hopefully this new storyline about the race to find the path to Earth takes off. Nit picking can be overdone... truth is season 3 has been mostly good so far, I can't wait for the new episodes to start up again.

    Darfur: Well, something's tanking BSG & it's not SG-1

    by spyguy

If BSG was as consistently enjoyable to watch as it used to be, the ratings should have stayed pretty constant regardless of whatever the lead-in show was or what time of the year it was on...especially in the age of TiVo.

As far as I can tell, though, people are simply tired of the neverending doom and gloom and characters that have become unwatchable. A few friends of mine have bailed on BSG over the last year and are watching HEROES, EUREKA or DOCTOR WHO instead these days. Now, those shows may not be as well-written or well-produced as BSG, but they are more upbeat and sci-fi fans tend to be drawn to that in the long term.

    what's tanking?

    by oisin5199

BSG is still the best thing on television. No debate. Not even with Kai. And I'm happy to let Kai and Metalwater debate to their heart's content. They are both constantly wrong, so maybe their heads would explode or something. Anyway, as much as I loved Serenity at the time, nowadays I kinda look at it like this - that hot girl that you used to have a great thing with but she dumped you. You put all this effort into one final fling so you can go out on a bang (literally), even though you know it's going to totally screw your chances of getting back together and having a long term, meaningful relationship. In other words, if I could change history, I would have rather had five seasons of Firefly (where we could see more of Book and Wash) than the Serenity film, which was a good work in itself, one of the better space films of recent years (lookin' at you, Lucas), but was a still a pale shadow of the brilliance and potential of the show. So sorry, Kai, there IS debate, but don't assume I agree with Mr. Metal - I wish BSG was more shits and giggles - Water. And Batman Begins was the closest to perfect superhero film EVER. So now that I have established myself on the opposite side of the fence on everything but BSG, I can now move on with my day.

Metalwater - Humor on the Hero's side

    by nohubris

Now that you mention it, I think Starbuck could do it. Her kind if humor was always pointed "zingers" but it could work IMHO with a good writer who specializes in witty, irony filled zingers. Also, the interplay with Adama and Tigh has been another source of humor. Remember the Season 1 scene when Tigh sat on Adama's jacket and finished off his cup-o-noodles?The Chief seems to have a subtle knack for humor too at times.

    Right, back on topic...

    by bunyon snipe

The biggest problem with the movie, however was the scale, it had about a dozen extras at any one time and made Mongo look like a small town.
This is a whole planet and Ming has a vast army at his disposal, it would be nice to have a real sense of danger, too...
The Lion Men The Shark Men and all that stuff, too, and definately the art deco stuff...
This has possibilities, just don't fuck it up!

    by lynxpro

His name is Steven Moffat. He would be perfect for this show's showrunner. But considering how badly the Dollar is doing, SciFi better offer his salary in Sterling or Euros.

    Flash Gordon/BSG comparison

    by nohubris

Flash Gordon's Princess Aura is like Sharon "Athena" Agathon, Helo's wife. Both started out "evil" and became good after falling in love with the hero.

Do some of us REALLY think NBSG is 'grim'? LOL!!! :) Have you ever watched Blake's 7? Lemme tell you something: you probably have little idea what 'grim' really IS
until you've spent an afternoon watching Paul Darrow's character methodically bring people down or Jan Chappell's stalk around the ship laying out doom...I actually find the Paul Hogan version of Tigh to be a positive inspiration to me. . .that guy will never give up for ANYTHING! :)

    by oisin5199

he'd prefer depthless cheese over anything else. He prefers the old BSG and he probably prefers Schumacher's Batman. But, there was humor! Why are the loudest, most redundant voices always the dumbest ones?

    DEPTH IS GOOD

    by bunyon snipe

70 years of storyline crammed into a three hour min series...
Ideally Flash will meet Ming face to face for a few minutes, and esacpes with Dale and the Doc, spending the rest of the mini-series and the whole of the first series on the run, travelling around Mongo making friends, well friendly enemies... Maybe being captured and taken back to Mingo City at the end of the first season awaiting his death sentence...
FG would work as a dark series

    cont.

    by bunyon snipe

All of Flash's allies are at each other's throats all the time, killing each other regularly and without sympathy, so getting them to join and defeat Ming is gonna be a tall order, which will make things quite dark without purposefully doing so...
