"Spiderman Unlimited" ((includes images))

Glen here...
...with a look at Spiderman Unlimited, a series whose status I am not clear on at the
moment (hey, at least I'm honest).
Rumors indicate Spiderman Unlimited will utilize the CGI sensibilities recently manifestd
by Voltron and Transformers: Beast Wars to bring our favorite web slinger into
hitherto unexplored regions of animated superhero coolness.
Will that be the case? Many things can happen between conception and final product- not the
least of which is the complete extension of the project. None the less, here are some images
showing what the creators of Spiderman Unlimited have in mind, thanks to the stealthy and
diligent efforts of RANGER ONE.
Thanks a million, Ranger One. There will be another report from him later this
week...

Maybe they should do Spiderman 2099, it was a very well written well thought out story, which MOST people are fairly unaware of...
-
Marvel 2099 was another failed attempt to create a new "Universe", this time set in the future, after the "Marvel Age" of superheros (they all mysteriously disappeared for some reason).
I would much rather see Ghost Rider get his own series than see this crappy version of Spider-man. Marvel all ready screwed Spidey with the clone story. And now they are trying to bring an alternate universe version of "Spider-Girl". Don't they ever learn!!! -
Here we go. Looks like somebody over at Fox or Marvel has been watching Batman Beyond, as this looks like it's going to be in direct competition with it. Personally, I was never a fan of Spider-Man 2099 (weak characters), nor any of Marvel's "pocket universe" lines (2099, MC2, Heroes Reborn, any of the X-Men parallel universes, must I go on?), which is what this seems to be, even though from these two shots the design looks butchered. Sorry if this post seems overly Anti-Marvel, but what's left to root for? Lately, they're about as creative as Rob Liefeld...
-
Out of all the future versions of the Marvel Universe, Doom 2099 was pretty good. This was because it was the original Doom (I think...). Anyway, that was the only one that was worth anything. Marvel really has gone downhill. There is talk of completely starting the Spider-Man comic over, making him a teen again, giving it a 90's sort of spin. What can you do...
-
Spider-Man 2099 (and, for that matter, Doom 2099) were incredibly well-written series that were done in by Marvel's shoddy promotion and the market dynamics of the early 1990s (the height of the speculation hysteria...a copy of "Turok" #1 could run up to $200, and now it commands a dollar at most). It didn't help that SM2099 offered honest-to-God science-fiction stories when the bestselling comics were slapdash crap like "Spawn" and "Lady Death". "Unlimited"'s writers could do a hell of a lot worse than to adapt the best of Peter David's run on the book, which at the time was the most mature and intelligently written book one could find at the "House of Ideas".
-
Isn't this the opposite of the whole Muppet Babies, Young Scooby Doo sort of thing. Perhaps someone should try an original idea!!! Either that or try to tell a story that is true to the original comics.
-
The Problem with an "original" superhero show is that most GOOD sepehero writers are comic book writers, and that most other writers wont "come down" and do cartoons (elitism?)
-
BTW Spiderman 2099 was VERY well written and had a GREAT sci-fi story going for it, I think it would be great with a kinda Anime look to it... Don't get me wrong I like the original Spiderman but after 35 years all of HIs stories have been told over and over again, and besides he is really starting to be a dated Superhero... (Unlike 90% of DC and Marvels Superhero's who are ALREADY INCREDIBLY DATED) Batman excluded, Robin INCLUDED...
-
Okay, to look how to do this right, all you gotta do is pick up a copy of 'Kingdom Come.' THIS is how you do a superhero story set in the future. This new-edgier-spidey is pure shit. With the wealth of superguys and -gals that Marvel has on hand, they choose to retread Spidey stories in a 'Bladerunner-esque' future? Please! How about a good team book, say, oh, I dunno..THE frickin AVENGERS?! Thunderbolts? Shit you know if Warner ever got their thumbs outta their asses and did a JLA series, Marvel would jump on it, yeah? If you want a 100% CGI series, then use characters who would benefit, such as Iron Man, or other techno-oriented heroes (sorry, it's kinda late and I'm rambling.)
Other than that, what else do you really expect with Marvel's track record?
-red7ine
ps: if you have any comments feel free to e-mail me, I'd like a good discussion on this...

Bad Animation = Bad show. No matter how good the story is.
by john mclame
In Animation, the quality of the art, then the smoothness, or technique is the most important...above story & above all else.
How many amazing episodes of Batman have we seen, where the animation just blew us away. Did you ever see an episode you thought was bad, but had awesome animation? I don't think so. Then there were those so-so, or just plain suckass episodes. THose were the ones with lame animation that wasn't up tp par. (Any Penguin episode!)
THe Fox Spiderman cartoon has always sucked in my view because the animation/look is terrible, right down to the character design. THe computer coloring screams NTSC, & the CG building shots blend in as well as Hugh Grant on 125th street.
SOme of the storys seemed okay, but I couldn't get past the crap look of it.
THe old Spidey & His Amazing Friends was lightyears better, because it had a consistant look. It also shined because it stuck closer to the comic stories. Now they seem to lump 4 different storylines together.
THe Secret Wars episode of the new Spiderman was a disgrace! They totally raped it.
Why they don't just translate the comics word for word , shot for shot, is beyond me. They already have the good stuff mapped out and storyboarded for them! -
I personally think the last series (approx 65ish) episodes were not that bad one or two were pretty cool, its ashamed it got axed through company closure i believe (?) however i thought christopher daniel barnes (i think that was hi name) was bloody good as the voice of SM and it would be nice if theyused him again. Has anybody got word on who is voicing the cast ?
-
Does anyone remember Power Pack? I guess it was sorta "X-Men Babies" where these young kids (between 13 and 5 years old, I think) had mutant super powers, and they had to protect themselves against "Snarks" or something. I think Jim Lee had a big hand in creating it. I used to love that comic!! The question is, was it any good or is it hindsight just fuckin with me?
-
You're not alone, my friend. I remember Power Pack, and I thought it was GREAT... during Louise Simonson's run. Then Bogdanove took over as writer and it was still pretty cool. Then they gave it to Michael Higgins and it got totally bastardized for the rest of its run. Alex turning into a Kymellian? Galactus returning to Earth AGAIN? The mother going catatonic over discovering their powers? Come on. At least Simonson came back with the one-shot Power Pack Holiday Special and fixed all of THAT crap, but after that I don't remember seeing any of the Pack, save for Alex's few appearances in the New Warriors. I think the problem with the book was that it was ahead of its time -- a lighthearted book that premiered at the height of the Dark Age. Although I doubt Marvel has the balls, I'd LOVE to see the Pack return. It beats the hell out of another X-Men title or jumpstarting the Hulk, Spider-Man, Avengers, FF, Daredevil, Punisher, Dr. Strange, Alpha Flight, Captain America, Thor, Iron Man and every friggin' character they have at another issue #1. As cool as a couple of those books are (Kevin Smith's Daredevil -- YOU KICK ASS!)I HATE the renumbering trend.
-
First of all, Power Pack kicked ass, up until they had the kids switch powers a third time and Alex turned into Horsey-Man. That's enough of that tangent. As for Spider-Man Unlimite, although the design is reminiscent of 2099, everything I've read has placed it as more of an alternate present storyline, rather than an alternate future. Sort of like they're doing with Mutant X right now. And for the person who suggested they do an Avengers cartoon, they are. It's on Fox's fall schedule. Lineup includes Tigra, Hawkeye, Vision, Scarlet Witch, and a couple of others. No Cap, thanks to the series that fell through, and no Iron Man, thanks to that piece of crap syndicated cartoon. I haven't seen any visuals for it yet, except for the logo. Here's hoping that Marvel can do a good cartoon for once.
-
It's hard to tell based on two pictures of Spider-Man but the costume is pretty damn cool looking. It looks a lot like the old Black costume from the early/mid 80s with a little bit of red in it. Everyone is comparing this to Btman Byond and Spider-Man 2099, BUT I don't THINK Spider-Man Unlimited is supposed to take place in the future. I think it's supposed to be the present day, BUT an alternate Earth. Something like that. In any case it should be interesting. I just wish Fox hadn't shelved the Captain America series that was supposed to take place in World War II. They said Nazi's weren't appropriate for Saturday morning or something like that...
By the way, No matter how good this series might turn out to be, Spider-Man Unlimited is a BAD title... -
I'm suprised no one hit on the real reason for all of this. Selling more toys. The only reason this series was created is so they have a new version of SpiderMan to repackage in infinite variations. This is also the reason behind the new Batman series. Notice how the new Batman Beyond toyline features a dozen new variations on the Batman character and only one stock villian. While the creative people behind these series may have integrity (especially Dini), they were given the directive to design the shows specifically for a new toy line. Batman and Spiderman are the only consistant sellers of the superhero toys, so that is why we are seeing yet another Batman and Spiderman series.
-
Wow, after reading all your posts thus far I think its like 50-1 for burning this show from the get-go. I thought the pics looked cool (please dont lynch me) although it IS totally Spiderman 2099. I liked it, I thought the book was cool ($2.95 seems REALLY high price for any comic these days). Even if it IS an alternant PRESENT instead of alternant Future, it wouldnt make any different as they are almost the same thing. Oh yeah Dolfanar, Marvel DID do an anime style Spiderman book, several titles actually including X-men. They'll never see Saturday Morning cartoon versions of them and thats a shame . Somebody suggested Punisher 2099, again, it most likely will never happen (that character wasnt the Frank Castle character either).Stuff to animate: Cam Kennedy's "Outcasts" 12 issue series (usually in the $1 bin if you look), anything by Berni Wrightson, anything by Joe "I'm the MAN!" Kubert and the first 12 of 50 issue VIGILANTE from DC (after that they got stupid!) I confess I'm NOT a big fan of SUPAH-HEWOS, I think the ones with supah powahs are quite lame (ALL OF EM!) Gimme Batman, gimme Daredevil, gimme Punisher. Gimme non mutant/super powered super heros for gods sakes. I want my SGT. Rock, my Men of War, my Unknown Soldier, My Creature Commandos and my Anamanics/Tiny Toons/Pinky and the Brain.-Mck!
-
How many people think that is just the worst idea ever , stick your hands up , come on be honest. How about concetrating on the f$#@!en
movie. Come on marvel get a clue -
I was thinkg....Since the Sandman movie will never see the light of day, wouldn't it be cool if HBO or Showtime did it as a MiniSeries. After all,HBO gave McFarlane creative control. Just a thought.
Oh yea, I think this idea sucks. -
I really don't understand how Marvel can produce such good comics, yet at the same time make such crappy animated series. In the case of Spiderman, all Parker spends his time doing is fighting the same old villains and worrying about his Aunt (being protective is alright, but its damn obsessive as it is now). With X-men, the animation is average, and the action is cruddy (Wolverine pops his claws at the drop of a hat, yet to my knowledge has never cut any human foes, only robots a stuff). It is a children's series, but come on, even kids can tell somethings up. As to Spidey Unlimited, the animation looks art looks crappy (much worse than Voltron and Beastwars-- two series which I don't even like-- whatever happened to the salad days of transformers like Optimus Prime and Jazz?) Now everything is "oh its got to be a robot and become both a Pterodactyl and an aardvark!!!!!) Anyway, I'm rambling--- Pull your heads out of your asses, Marvel.
-
First off to the person who said that a animated series (or comic for that matter) depends 100% on it's visuals... I disagree look at the simpsons, and south park, the reason THOSE shows thrive is excellent writing... The problem with cartoons is that the writing is ALWAYS uneven, because SOME writers ACTUALLY TRY to write good stuff, while others take the paycheck and run... No one really gives a shit either way because the show Isn't MEANT to be GOOD, it's meant to sell toys (as another poster deftly mentioned). This is something that Bob Forward and Larry Ditilio have FINALLY realized about Beasties (Beast Wars)... As for Marvel... remember this they are in BAD, REALLY BAD financial trouble and will sell EVERYTHING not nailed down (Movie Rights, Toy Rights, TV rights ANYTHING, and to ANYBODY) to stay afloat...
-
there was one really controversial shot of Wolverine BEHEADING an evil (non robot) character in siloette with his claws. It was small and all black against an almost all white background but it caused such a stir that it made headlines soon after. Mck :O)
-
The entire 2099 universe was incredibly bogus, though Spidey was the best of them. They all featured extremely poor artwork. But at the time I was trying most everything.
I too remember Power Pack, but didn't really care for them. I agree with Lane, MAKE DR. STRANGE! Ghost Rider would work too. If they want to sell toys how about Micronauts? Baron Karza ruled! or ROM, that had a good concept.
Anyone remember Weird War? That would make an awesome series, though way too high concept for TV execs.
But the series that would best work in either animated or movie form (but which I know would get screwed up beyond belief) would be Grendel!!! -
Spidey 2099 was the best writen of the 2099 bunch because they had Peter David period! However, my favorite 2099 title was Ghost Rider. None of that Spirt of Vengence / Magic / Devils crap. Just a mind/personality stuck in a machine kicking ass.
As for Marvel writng good comics, please stop dreaming and wake up. Marvel only had a few good writers... Claremount, L & W Simmonson, David and Bryne & Miller (when they worked for Marvel). Otherwise it was just superhero crap, not for kids mind you, just crap for adults. You want good writing and stories go check out anything from Neil Gaiman, Dave Sims, Frank Miller or Terry Moore.
With Y2K and peoples growing fear of technology Ghost Rider 2099 could work even if it's set in the present.
P.S. the Spidey from Spider-man unlimited is the Spider-man from 2099. It's the same damn costume. Just because you take crap from 1 pile and start a new pile doesn't make it stop being crap. They have enough artists to design a new costume... the reason they don't: don't want to pay the artist anything. -
Has anyone noticed how similar the new Batman series is to the current Superman series. It has gone away from the concept of villians using their intellect to them having superpowers. Batman was great because its villians were human. It should stick to it s own universe instead of trying to expand into another one. Anyone see the similarities between Mr. Powers and Lex Luthor, both being corporate businessmen who are the main nemesis of the heroe. Heres to Batman Beyond finding its own style.

Okay, so she's not Marvel, but a good Wonder woman show would be most excellent. The new Catwoman would be fun too... I liked Dr. Strange. Heck I even collected Alpha flight. (I check up on that one occasionally, what in the world happened to the Purple Girl? She was a good character.) I liked Spiderman back when the Black Cat was on it and Mary Jane was really dead. And just for Kicks I loved the one where Peter's Aunt gets the powers of Galactus and becomes a herald... they don't do those types of funny ones anymore, do they? Oh and anyone remember the Defenders? Dr. Strange was a member of that team for a while. The Avengers would be okay (it was a little flat for a while) if they focused mainly on the Scarlet Witch! ;-) Hrrrmmmm... I'm beginning to notice a pattern here... I think we can all agree female superheroes are what makes comicbooks worth collecting... ;-) Best regards, Raymond
-
for Joe buck: Weird War Tales rocked, the Haunted Tank rocked, SGT Rock umm...rocked. Like I said earlier, ANYTHING by Joe "I'm the MAN" Kubert ROCKS!! Of course I grew up on these comics. I never touched a super hero book (untill the damn market got flooded!!) X-Men never interested me, just one big super power-fest...by the way, I have comics...for those who want them, email me.
-
First off, the spiderman cartoon. I watched it. I didn't like it very much. As for the unlimited, I don't really care. Now, Beast Wars. Quite a few people seem to bashing it freely here. First off, I think its one of the best shows in the kids arena. One of the main critcisms seems to be its only purpose is to sell toys. Sorry, but every kids show sells toys. We could bash the batman series on that. Thats simply because of the target audience. Someone said G1 was better. Though I watched G1 growing up in the 80's and it has a lot of nostalgic value for me, it first two seasons were good, but the seasons after the movie were crap. Beast wars had rocky start in season 1, but I think it has goten really good in it recent two seasons. The story has imporved a lot. Personally, I like the animal instead of robot transformations. Its hard to care about a truck, frankly. And the graphics have become simply great. Beast wars will have a spectcualar conculsion in a few months, and a new transformers sereis will begin, with a new cast and crew. It will be more related to beast wars than beast wars was to G1, though all the referneces to G1 in beast wars were great(It would have been easy simply to forget it.) goodbye.
-
As an additinally note, I think its great that beast wars is ending. It will go out on top, unlike G1(generation 1), which descended in crapness and went out with a whimper. I just hope the new trnaformers series can live up to beast wars.
-

I'm glad other people remember Power Pack. Ah, nostalgia.....I'm filling up...
Anyways, someone mentioned Transformers, and it was just last night that me and a pal were trying to name as many Transformers as we could (I make no apologies for this) and I totally whipped his ass with my expert knowledge of cool sounding robot names. Megatron, Soundwave, Starscream, Jetfire, Grimlock, Kickback, Ratchet, Ultra Magnus, Gyro, Inferno, Hot Rod, Blaster...I could go on but I won't. I always thought Transformers would make a cool live-action movie. It'll never happen. -
I was a big fan of the original 'Transformers' comics as well, and always thought it would make a GREAT live-action movie.
Mid 80's F/X wouldn't have been able to do it justice, but now....
The concept of silicone/metal -based "life forms" thinking that earth' s organic entities were not truly "alive" was pretty ingenious... -
Someone said they cracked up when they read the line about caring about a truck. I didn't mean it that way. I cared about optimus, but I was just saying that its easier to care about a animal than a car(for me, anyway.) He also said that the first eps of Beast Wats sucked, but he hadn't seen any of the recent eps. You need to. Beast Wars is light years ahead of how it started out. As for a live action movie, that would have been interesting. And i do love the old g1 movie. The only time transformets ever hit the big screen. One of the best moents for me in beast wars was the season 2 ep where dinobot died. It probably wasn't quite as good as the optimus death scene, simply because dinobot was not the leader, and losing a leadet is always tougher than losing a solider. Still, one of the best moments in beast wars. One other thing is that beast wars has almost began to move back toward the old g1 style, in that many of the current transformers are transmetals, and have a addtinonal vehicle mode. I don't think they will ever go back to the old car style, though.
-
I thought by now marvel would have taken the old live action japanese spiderman episodes and had them redubbed for us tv faster than you can say "power rangers". It might be better than this new show. Hey, where can I find those japanese episodes anyway (outside of japan)? Thanks
-
I have yet to see the Japanese Spiderman videos on the net, but i bought one at a comic book convention. It is quite hilarious and blows the American TV version out of the water. Very unique take on the character. No subs, but you don't really need them. Spiderman even has a "zord" ala every other Japanese Sci Fi show. Worth a peek.
-
Ah... a comics geek discussion. I love these things, on some dark, secret level. Anyways, I've been reading through, and though I might shed some light into many of the nooks and crannies of the english muffin which is this chat.(Poetic, ain't I?) I'll also be spouting my own pabulum into the mix.
I agree that most of the pocket lines Marvel's done, as a whole, have been LAME. The best one was the first one, New Universe. it actually lasted for a few years, and if it weren't for the fact that we quickly saw DP7 become a slightly more realism influenced X-Men, and Starbrand become Quasar/captain marvel, it could have been great. The Pitt, in which Pittsburgh gets nuked, was a great idea. however, most of 2099 blew, as does all of M2. And any story with Spidey's baby girl is retarded, flat out. they've done it so many times and ways that they want us to assume that it's for sure that peter will have a daughter, but hey, it's Marvel, nothing is ever true, or ever stays the same.
Regarding Batman, and its animation. every single one of the new episodes with Tim Drake blow. It's afaster animation method, so they can market more toys, and there is no regard for proportion or anatomy anymore, unlike the original B:TAS episodes, which just stylized anatomy. and also, While I do like the Superman cartoon, I remember that I liked the one from the late 80s more, though I can find any episodes on tape anywhere, I remember it had a highly detailed style. I miss highly detiled art, the kind that shows REAL quality.
Power Pack. this was a great series. good art, great writing, and NO MUTANTS. The kids got their powers from alien costumes, not from mutant abilitiies, although they did have trouble with the Sentinels. It got bad once they let Sue and Reed Richards' kid Franklin in, but until then it was fine.
Someone suggested making Micronauts or ROM into cartoons. Talk about ironic. Those comics were only comics because they were toys first.
Someone asked about Purple Girl. to the best of my memory, her powers induced in her the same depression they did in her father, the Purple Man, and like him, she eventually commited suicide, in some rather impactless dumb story.
that or she got pressed in a vineyard because they thought she was a grape with attitude.
Ok, near the end here. Hmmm what else is there to say? oh yeah. The Spiderman cartoon that's on now blows too much to even consider another series about Webhead.
And for adults, let's see a Cerebus Cartoon. for kids, how about something cool, but done with a distinectly american style to the art, instead of this pseudoanime crap, or worse, this hyperstylized crap. let's see something like Doc Savage, or Sherlock Holmes, (minus the opium). A character whose stroies include Brains, as well as fist Fights. Like what we all hoped the new Johnny Quest would be like, but wasn't. and when the hell is that Scooby doo Daphne does the entire gang pornotoon ever going to come out? (yes, that's a joke, but you'd watch it too, so don't bother commenting on that.) -
Actually, the cartoon is pretty good, its better than that god awful movie. 'Still, the classic japnnesse godzilla remains the only true godzilla.
-
One comic they should make into a series is Strike Force Morituri.
Quick Summary:
In the future Earth is being invaded by aliens who are looking to rape Earth of her resources. To combat the alien threat Earth scientists come up with a way to turn people into super heroes. The only catch is the process will kill them in one year. The story revolves around these newly created super heroes. The reasons why they chose to take on the process. There fights against the aliens. The efforts of Earth's scientists to perfect the process, so they can save these people. There friendships with their team; and, the eventual death of themselves and their friends.
Its a great read and would make a great show. -
Marvel is nothing but a bunch of screw ups. The Hulk movie gets canned, Spiderman in legal limbo, X-Men, Fantastic Four both questionable as to whether they will ever get made. When are they going to listen to their fans? IMHO the only thing good to ever come out of them in the past ten years was Ghost Rider 2099 and Hellstorm, both were cancelled in a year.
