Something Weird Video unearths Brian DePalma's thought lost MURDER A LA MOD!!!

Published at:  Jan 03, 2007 6:05:28 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with a bit of news for you Brian DePalma fans like me. I couldn't quite bring myself to see BLACK DHALIA in theaters because of friends across the board that got to see it before me told me it was weak. Even those that love DePalma. I'll see it eventually because... well, it's De Palma.

However this news has gotten me excited. In 1968 DePalma's MURDER A LA MOD was released in 1 theater and quickly disappeared and was thought lost. The movie stars William Finley (Winslow Leach, aka THE PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE) and has ice-pick murders and "anticipates" snuff films.

Something Weird Video, in their quest to keep these types of films alive, have put together a digitally remastered DVD. "Paul" sent in the good word after seeing a mention pop up on NY Post's Page 6 today. Pretty cool. Can't wait to give this one a look!

    Not a good sign...,

Usually, anything Depalma gets the boards totally frothy. Must have worn out his geek-cred after all.

Phantom of the Paradise is so goddamn good...

    by danielkurland

Everything about it. I've recently become a huge De Palma fan, caught up on a lot of his stuff (although I still can't find Obsession) and this is good news to me.

    Black Dahlia was underrated

    by osmosis jones

Certainly no Chinatown or L.A. Confidential, but it didn't deserve the scorn it received. Some excellent De Palma setpieces in there, plus a superb Mark Isham score.

    Torture Porn?

I like the bit about how this movie might "anticipate" snuff films. Definitely gonna check this one out!

Black Dahlia was the nail in DePalma's coffin

    by spandau belly

I understand that this DePalma bloke has shown some skill in films that just didn't come together as a whole, but Dalhia took the cake in solidifying him as a director to avoid. I read the book and only the first half made sense because after that they started a whole new story so that they could avoid all the stuff in Mexico. The wacky scene where the cops choose to chuck Lee's corpse in the furnace instead of giving him a proper burial was the where the total WTF factor began for me.I saw it with two people who had not read the book and they said it made no sense right off the bat. The film never explained anybody's motivations and every scene was a 30 conflict and then cut to the next rushed scene. They barely even featured the Dahlia case at all and focussed more on the love triangles, which is wierd for a movie called 'The Black Dahlia'. My nominee for worst film of the year and worst adaptation of all time.

    Gatchaman Phantom!!!

    by ladracul

I actually have yet to see "The Funhouse" in its entirety. Anyway, POTP has totally inspired me to write my own (As if you all didn't know already) though a different kind of anime influence (Elegant Gothic Lolita and Visual Kei) is prevalent and is more closer to the book. And the lovely Noel Fielding would be Phantom, looking like he had been in Dir En Grey or Malice Mizer. And as an homage, I'd have him in a battle damage Gatchaman Phantom outfit for one scene. Anyone agree with me on the Gatchaman thing? That's probably WHY they made an action figure of him in Japan...

Oh wait, I forgot to explain who Noel is...

    by ladracul

For all those non-Brits and people that don't watch BBC America, he's one half of "The Mighty Boosh", the glam boy who plays a lot of weirdos. Thus, perfect. And here he is, with professional screwup Courtney Love- http://tinyurl.com/uz3u3

    Spandau Belly you ignorant slut!

    by condomwrapper

The most interesting aspect of The Black Dahlia was how little DePalma cared for investigating the murder for favor of studying the complex relationships between the characters. I guess that ship went right over your head. And how could Tthe Black Dahlia be "the nail in DePalma's coffin" when his previous film Femme Fatale ranks among his best work? The Black Dahlia will one day get the respect it deserves...
