A pair of eyes turns to 8MM
Well, after yesterday's positive review... well... we got a pair of different toned reviews, and I'm real interested in seeing this thing. One of these guys seems a bit afraid of the film, and the other... well he despised it. And yesterday's was positive in a very agressive way. So it seems the film is getting reactions... We'll see soon enough...
Just got back from a screening of 8MM.
I work at a comic book store with film geeks. I've seen a lot of messed-up
shit, including weird comics and movies on the "fringe" of taste. I consider
myself a pretty jaded filmgoer, having seen a sizeable chunk of what's out
there.
But I've never, never, seen anything like 8MM.
I feel sick right now. I can't wrap my brain around it. It deftly plays
dodgeball on the razor's edge, daring the audience to stay one step ahead,
or
just wallow in what was and try to understand it. I can't begin to explain
why, but I liked it a little.
Not in the "Go see this movie" way, but in the "Well, somebody had the balls
to make this. Good for them, but don't show it to me again" way. The end is
a
mind-fuck. You know how after a horrible news story, you think what you'd do
if you had 10 minutes alone with the perp who committed some horrendous
crime?
Well, after seeing this, you'll want that job to be left up to the
authorities.
I can't point out plot points, or critique the evil Schumacher's directing
capabilities. I can't do it because I can't deal with this movie. I'm going
to
go see Rushmore again.
Rocket Boy
and here is the next review.... they didn't like it..
I just saw that review of 8 mm posted, and i swear to god that guy must have seen the wrong movie, because the version i
saw yesterday in Boston was an absolutely horrific display of wasted talent, and demonstrated once again why joel Shumaker
is a hack, and why he should be shot before he makes another Batman movie like there is talk of him doing.
Like you all know the movie is about snuff films, which could be an interesting premise for a movie, but this one is BORING
for an hour, then essential turns into a bad verison of a slasher movie. Topping it off is the preachiness of the dialogue involving
the main bad guy, trying to explain his whole situation.
Nick cage is the man for the most part, but his is stiff as a board here. He must have known he was in a bad movie half way
through and quit. Keep in mid I liked him in Snake Eyes even when most hated that movie. He had no energy at all, and despite
one good scene where he shows some of the acting talent that got him an Oscar, he stinks here. Hopefully Bringing out the
Dead will reveal his true self again.
The other acting stinks too, though Shumaker is the main culprit. If it weren't for The Client, all his movies would stink. he
ruined A Time to kill and we all know about the Batman franchise. Lets hope he is never allowed to make movies again.
You can call me Snuff

I'm really looking forwar to 8mm, even if Schumacher is directing... mostly because I like most of the proyects Cage chooses to be involved in. On the subjet of "snuff", has anyone seen the spanish film TESIS? It's a great movie and a very good approach to this subject.
-
I suppose that the ultimate test of a flick like this is "what does it say about us?" Horror movies, "dark fantasy" or whatever you want to call them have held a dark mirror to ourselves for a long time. Honestly, who can watch "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" (either version) without feeling a little uncomfortable about the state of America at the time it was made?
Having not seen "8MM," I'm withholding judgement, but I'm wondering if it really has something to say about our need to go further and push the limits of our pleasures and decandencies. Based on "Seven," I think there's real potential. It's been a while since we've seen Schumacher with a script of any real quality. Maybe he'll shock us all.

'Mute Witness'
-
Somewhere in the Annals of Film Making's Past there's a passage which explains how Joel Schumacher single handedly destroyed the Batman franshise. And I sure hope that Schumacher knows this. But "8MM" looks genuinely interesting. And mixed reviews usually are appealing becuase I want to know what side of the argument that I fall on. Hopefully Schumacher has been able to look back at his terrible failures (*With an "s") and present us with something fresh, new, and possibly even shocking. Shockingly good or bad though, I will hold judgement on that until opening day.
-
The premise of this film seems absolutely vile to me, and I dont think Ill be seeing it...However, I think Joel Schumaker can be a brilliant film maker...FALLING DOWN was brilliant, and BATMAN FORVER had a certain, um, style...
So I think you should all stop the Joel-bashing. Save it for the really untalented, like Jeremiah Checik :)
-
I don

I haven't seen 8mm yet, but I can tell from the trailer it is crafted better than 90% of the horror flicks (Urban Legend for example). It doesn't mean its a good movie, chances are it it isn't. I've never cared for JS's directing. But I wouldn't blame him for the sorry shape of The Batman film franchise..he had A LOT OF HELP from Warner Bros, McDonalds and DC (who've destroyed the comic charcter completely). I just shrug my shoulders and enjoy having a Creeper action figure.
-
What DC's doing now, with the no mans land story looks good the first chapter by Bob Gale (Back to the future), shows an intresting take on the character. Plus the JLA version of Bats is how he should be when confronting the superpowers
-
I saw this film at a screening about a month ago and let me tell you that the first reviewer is right on the money, this is some disturbing and scary shit. Definitely made me make up my mind about two things. 1 I thought it was good, but I'm never watching it again. 2 My boyfriend can take his 'home movie' idea and shove it right up his ass!
-
Like Lugo said up there and like I said in the other 8mm talkback, you all have to see this movie, the only relation it has with 8mm is that the story is related to snuff films, but I can assure you it is far better, it is from spain so you could probably get it at any video club under FOREIGN.
-
OH YEAH! This movie ROCKED!!! It was sick, fucked up and perverted and I haven't had this much fun since SEVEN!!! Joel Shumacher can come out of the penalty box, because he is BACK to form!! Fuck BATMAN! Make more movies like this!! You'll love the ending, the guts and blood are too friggen' real and it shook me up!!! After sixty CHAINSAW MASSACRES and a hundred FACES OF DEATH, this movie shook me fuckiing up!!! I highly recommend it, I highly praise this movie!! GO SEE IT!!!!
-
I'm about as excited to this as I am a film called KILLING JON BENET RAMSEY. But, I'm gonna go see it, because everything else that come out that day looks like shit. (Oh yeah, I heard Oliver Stone is working hard to bring us the Jon Benet thing. He's gonna film it fifty different formats and explore every conspiracy angle. It's his contention that Anti-Benet factions moved on her after her parents left the house, because she was 'too damn pretty'. He also takes a look at the seedy and grimy underbelly of child modeling and the theory that a band of little girls who lost to Jon Benet were the murderers. This would explain the rambling and stupid ransom note. The parents will be plaed by Tommy Lee Jones and Tea Leoni and they will act suspicious and unconvincing throughout the film, leading to a montage series of stupid People magazine covers. The ending will show them actually murdering their daughter to keep her from spilling the beans about her parents and their role as her pimp and the many times they rented her out to the rich and powerful of Colorado.) See, if you liked that idea, you should probably come see 8MM with me. I'll have someone to make fun of after it's over and I think it sucks, like just about every movie seems to do.
-
Based on the negative review I know I will like it. The guy says that he liked The Client and Snake Eyes but hated Time to Kill. In my opinion the opposite is true. The Client was a boring adaptation of Grisham and Snake Eyes was all over the place (especially with the obvious reshot ending that left you saying WTF???!?!?!) A Time to Kill I thought was excellent (although Sam the Man was a little under par for this one.)
Anyway Cage is the man no matter which way you slice it and I hope that this turns out to be a great if not interesting movie. -
Fuck you, you touchy bitch! There are way too many touchy bitches on this site, there used to be a whole bunch of cool posters who posted on everything and say it in a way that I could sympathize with, but now all we get are assholes like you. Lane Myers at least tries to be honest!!! What about you, you jack rag? All you ever do is bitch and rag on Myers, I don't remember ever seeing a fucking post on the subject from you. At least Lane Myers always has something to say about the topic!! All you ever do is bitch! Say something about the goddamn movie Ryalto! I happen to think that Lane Myers is the only one at ths site who knows what the fuck he's talking about. We've had our differences but at least, at the very least he knows his shit. You and all the other touchy bitches need to shut the hell up I happen to like reading Lane Myers's posts. They're a whole lot of things, fun, dumb, hilarious, thought provoking. Not always but mostly. So shut up, dickhead. Try posting something that has to do with the subject and Full House is still on dumb ass!! It's in reruns!!
-
You gotta admit that was a little preachy. I really hate it when you try get serious on people, you're much more fun to read when you stay lighter and fun. Why do you take snuff films so seriously? Is there a reason? Aside from the pre-existing statement that you think they exist, what's the big deal? Who cares? So what if they exist? Do they affect you? Did someone put someone you know in one? I didn't think so. So who cares? Don't get all serious on us, Lane. It's not you.
-
Think of any other film out there right now. Entrapment? Another Bond. Inspector Gadget? Another remake? Phantom Menace? The 4th Star Wars. Carrie 2, Austin 2, Blade 2, Small Soldiers 2, FDTD 1 and 3, Bond 19, Jurassic Park 3, Jack Ryan + Indy + Back to the Future FOUR? Jason vs. Freddy?
Every movie we see is a rehash, remake, redo, re-something of what we have already seen. This may be the last movie that had an original idea. By the man who thrives on original ideas. Not rehashes like Batman. I will be first in line.
Keep notice: Shumacher did not kill my beloved BATMAN. Warners, Toys, McDonalds, and Akiva Goldsmith did. If anyone right now disagrees that FALLING DOWN is not a social satire classic, I will fight you right now. -
I think you suck, Lane. You are too fucking wordy! Shorten, man! Simplify! Who cares about snuff films? Ever see one? They're badly shot and kinda boring because you always know how they're going to end. Why don't you turn off your puter and get some sleep. You're way to serious and if you don't stop soon you're gonna have a fucking stroke. Not that I care or anything, but you will. Jim Ryalto, man. I don't know nothing about you either, but I think you suck too. I think anyone who don't agree with me sucks. But I think you suck for a reason. You are just like Lane using big words and shit like that you give a big fucking headache with those big fucking words. Put down the dictionary and go get a blow job. Hit the bowl and take a nap. Nothing anyone says here is gonna be remembered in twenty fucking years. Why don't you two go write a fucking book or a script or some shit like that? Then if you get it made into a book or a fucking movie, then you can talk. Until then shut the fuck up, because you both make my fucking head hurt.
-
The guy that plays Tony in "The Sopranos" is in it. also One guy in it looks like one of the thugs in "Fargo"?
-
The guy that reminded you from Fargo is the same guy. Peter Stromare. They show him in the previews with the crossbow. He was also the cool Russian dude in Armaggeddon. Later ya'll, and people, chiiillllll!
-
I just have to say, don't listen to them. I always enjoy reading your long posts, serious or not, and the 'preachiness' isn't TOO annoying. Keep it up
-
Movies like 8mm, Seven, Silence of The Lambs etc. are pure sensationalism; they have no bearing on real life, even though they like to pretend that they have some message or morality behind them. They are just distant relatives of low-budget trash, dressed up with slightly better actors and decent set design. Angel Heart was the only one that did it with any class (and had a big twist ending long before they became trendy).
One film that addresses the issue in a genuinely serious way is Funny Games, a real eye-opener that makes you re-think the whole concept of movie violence (It is also a damn good thriller).
On the subject of Batman, the best way to go would be Billy Zane as the Dark Knight with Raimi directing, from a script by either Chuck Dixon or Jim Starlin (or failing that, Peter David). Dirty Harry style gritty melodrama is the way forward. -
LaneMeyers said:
"You can't believe that someone would murder someone on film and not only would they do that, there are many people out there who would pay for a copy. Normal people, like you and me."
Um, excuse me, maybe like YOU, but certainly not like ME, or most of us for that matter. You probably write your posts just to get a reaction, and I'm sorry that I just fell into that trap, but I really have to disagree with you about what you think is 'normal.' Buying a movie to see someone rapped and tortured in the most horrific ways possible is in NO WAY a normal excercise. What kind of twisted reality do you live in anyway? I don't doubt that there are people who would do such a thing, but PLEASE refrain from thinking that this is NORMAL. It's disgusting and vile.
And to GodsSpeedBump, lest I get lambasted for not saying anything about the movie, how's this: I'll go see it. I want our lover of the nippled rubber suit can actually rebound from the destruction of the bat franchise.
ON a side note (as if anything in this post WASN'T on a side note):Anybody see the "Batman" episode. "Legends of the Dark Knight?" Bruce Timm really got Mr. Schumacher in that one! I almost fell out of my seat when I realized who the "girly" Joel character was! "I hear it can even drive up walls! Yeah, whatever Joel." -
I don't know what you're talking about. Raping and murdering sounds normal to me. You should see "8MM". There is this guy in it named "Machine" who is the sweetest character on film. You gotta look up to a guy like that. And Nick Cage's character is a baby. He is sooo torn apart by the entertainment. I kept shouting out "Don't cry because that flick isn't your taste, man! It's unbecoming of man to cry!". I think I'm gonna see "8MM" over and over just to see my new idol "Machine". Anyway...Kill the whites, and let me give a shout out to my homies: Long Dong Filipino, Crazy Tasha, Spaghetti Western Texan Steve, Jack Daniel's Alica, and Taco Bell Dog humping Jackson Five lovin Joshua.

There have been a lot of reports on the news and on the Web surrounding this film. In reporting on the subject of snuff films, they all say catagorically that is no such thing. I remember seeing a HBO movie starring Oliver Platt about a guy named Jaron Svoray. He was a Jewish reporter who went undercover in the German Neo-nazi underworld. In the film, once accepted by the Neo-nazis, Svoray is taken to a "film festival", which is essentially nothing but snuff films of skinheads raping and murdering people. Now, this movie was based on a true story, and written by Svoray himself. So does anyone know if this really happened, or was it artistic license? Does anyone know anything further of Svoray? If there were anyone in the world sick enough to make snuff films, it would be skinheads. And whoever it was who was talking about Clive Barkers fascination with death, it sounds to me like Barker is a complete and utter sicko. If he really is into it as much as you say, they should lock that scumbag up and throw away the key. It sounds like he's only inches away from killing someone himself to see how it looks and feels in person.
-
The most common definition of a snuff film is one that not only depicts real life murder, but was made with commercial intent. Films of skinheads and Nazis committing murder would probably not qualify, as the chances are they were made for fun, rather than profit.

It becomes more and more apparent from reading these comments, that we all have very strong feelings about violence. If a person has a collection of photographs or films that depict violence, it doesn't have to mean that person is a violent person. It means that person is curious about violence, as I think we all are. However, curiousity that is supressed may turn into obsession, which could lead to acting out. Nothing accesses wisdom and understanding quicker and with more effect than experience. To experience an act of violence first hand eliminates much of it's mystery and intrigue. Unfortunately by then it is often too late. Violence expressed from one human being to another for self serving, petty reasons such as pride or honor, to say nothing of fetish or self indulgence, is against what we as children of God were created for. Just an observation from one who cares about you all. Peace.

Just returned from seeing Joel Schumacher's latest opus, "8mm." While not totally bad (Joaquin Phoenix had a few funny lines), the film overall left me with a scuzzy, unclean feeling. Subject-wise it's a FAR cry from "Batman Forever," but you probably knew that already. I can only imagine what the NC-17 version is like.

Saw the movie last night. I must admit that although it would have been much better under David Fincher's direction, the movie kicked ass!! The first half of the movie seems as though it were a normal detective movie but as soon as Joaquin Phoenix enters, the movie takes on a whole new direction. While not as gritty as seven, this movie is gritty enough. Remember how tense it was during the last 20 mins of Seven when Kevin Spacey took them for a ride, the last 45 mins of the movie is as tense !! This movie is actually quite disturbing. Alot of people i know were turned off by it. I congratulate Joel Schumacher for making this movie and please, please take your career in this direction and stay far away from Comic book movies as possible. Also, please release the NC-17 version of this movie on DVD. That would kick ass !!

I thought 8mm was a darn sight better than Batman and Robin (not saying much) and Snake Eyes. In fact, I thought the film was fascinating up until Cage started taking revenge, when it turned into another action movie. The movie is at its best when exploring the step by step details of Welle's investigation, and investigating the underside of LA pornography. It proved to me that you cannot judge a director's work from two bad mistakes. I thought the acting was well done all around. This is one I will buy eventually for my Nic Cage collection.
