A New Year's Message From Sly

Published at:  Jan 02, 2007 3:55:51 PM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... Just got this message in from Stallone to all of you. Personally I'd love to see the POE project next from Sly. Here ya go...

First, Happy New Year to Harry and all you talkbackers. I haven't been around because I don't want to wear out my welcome. Contrary to what some bloggers may say, I read all your comments every day. Believe it or not, we're dealing with the Thailand situation, which you know is becoming extremely politically unstable. I am in the process of reactivating the project on the murders of Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac and that looks like it is a strong possibility. Now that would be an interesting segue from ROCKY or RAMBO. Anyway, you guys keep punching and I'll keep reading.

Best of life,

Sly

Rocky VS A Night at the Museum

    by truckstopcommando

    Sly,

Never got a chance to ask you a question, though I sent in some good ones...oh well. Glad to hear that Rocky is getting the critical acclaim it deserves, though I must admit to being pissed at its loss to Stiller's latest pile of shat.

Ben's funny enough sure, but when are American audiences going to reward material that deserves it and stop taking their sugar-crazed Yugi-Oh brats to safe, spastic horseshit like A Night at the Museum? I swear if Stiller and Wilson spend any more time together onscreen, the universe will implode from sheer-gheynes.

Well, what can you expect from a country that tolerates Paris Hilton and tards like Paul Wall and his cracker-ass ego teeth.

Keep punching Sly, your the shit.

    True Movie Star!

    by darm

Just want to say I read all parts of the Questions and each day I just felt like I knew a little bit more about the guy. He's always been a hero. Some of the best memories I have are sitting with my dad watching Rocky. Those films made me think I could do anything. I've watched all the Movies Sly has brought out and even managed to find something in Stop or My mom will shoot I liked (and it wasn't just the credits) for me Sly is sooo underated by so many people and has been treated as a joke too long. I hope Rocky Balboa allows the man to make the movies he obviously feels passionately about. You keep making 'em I will certainly keep watching them! Thanks for the good times Sly.

And it's better the second time around. Especially with a date...definite date flick cuz it's got heart. I'm convinced that the scene with Rocky shutting up that punk for little Marie got me some lovin, ha ha...So Sly, I thank you and my love life thanks you! I also stayed up WAY too late last night watching the Rocky DVD and all the bonus stuff...great job, btw. Stallone you're the freakin MAN.

    This is so weird...

    by ldm882

I'm watching Rocky IV right now on TiVo (I assume it and a bunch of other Stallone flicks I've seen on cable lately are all part of the current Stallone - Rocky Balboa craze), and I go back to check my e-mail and see a New Year's Message from Sly. Sly, if you really ARE reading these talkbacks (and I belive you when you say you are), I have to say 1) congrats on what I see is so far a $51 million gross on a film that cost half that, and 2) before all the hype, what did you a) REALLY expect the movie to take in and b) what do you think it will actually take in? I have to admit, I don't think it'll clear $100 million domestic gross (but I do think it will come close), but I think it'll easily go over that figure with international receipts. Not to mention DVD's, cable rights, etc. I assume that, considering the budget on ROCKY BALBOA compared to just your base 15 million dollar salary on your heyday flicks of the '90s that you probably didn't take that much money up front for BALBOA, but instead have a pretty good percentage deal worked out with the studio that should net you more than decent bucks on this flick. Congrats brother, all the way. I only hope that with what might be your next flick you can halfway capture what Det. Poole was onto before he was unfairly castigated by his own profession.

    B.I.G.

    by vern

I can't believe I didn't think to ask this when Harry was soliciting questions for Sly (instead I asked what Rambo used his training "to eat things that would make a billygoat puke" for), but...
I read the Rolling Stone article "Who Killed Biggie Smalls?" years back and it immediately reminded me of a modern (and real life) LA Confidential. The opening episode, a fatal road rage incident between what turns out to be two out of uniform police officers, just screams MOVIE. The article was later expanded into a book called LAbyrinth, which is not as tight of a story but still, I'm excited at the idea of somebody turning it into a movie.
But when I read about Sly trying to do this a while back I had to wonder what was going on. See, the story was that Sly wanted to have Suge Knight play himself in the movie. Now, obviously having the real guy play himself would be cool, but I'm pretty sure Suge Knight would notice that this is a story about a police officer who believes Suge is responsible for the deaths of Tupac and Biggie. If he's really involved in the movie what does that mean, are you changing it so somebody else is responsible? I don't get it.
Regardless, Sly, be careful bud. We don't want you getting shot too.

    by monorail77

I again applaud Rocky Balboa and hope it keeps its legs for box office. I read that MGM is happy with you and Rocky, as they're selling lots of back catalogue Rocky DVD sets too. So far you're at around $50 million box office gross without any overseas count. Not bad for a $24 million budget. I added my $10 (Cdn) and was happy to do so. I wish my dad was in town because I'd take him to see it too. I did recommend it to him though, along with everyone else I've seen or talked to in the last two weeks. Gotta get that word-of-mouth out!! You are a shining star once again. Give 'em hell, Sly. You deserve it!

My question: why haven't I been reading about this talkback phenomenon in the regular press? Surely what you have done here on AICN is unprecedented. It should be big news. Make it so, Sly. Get your publicity people on this "story within the story." There's no such thing as bad publicity, right?

    by briantag

Born in 1970, I grew up with Rocky (and later Rambo) as a natural part of life. I was so glad Rocky Balboa was a great film. I remember Sly's future sister-in-law, Julie, from my high school class (ECR, '88), and didn't really know her older sister, Jennifer. But I don't think she could have picked a better guy, from all I've read. Best of luck in '07 with all your projects, Sly. It's great to see you "back" (even though you never really went away).

I just watched the Rambo flicks again over Christmas...

    by dr_zoidberg

First Blood is still an amazing film, one of the true gems of the 80s. Part 2 is a real balls to the wall action flick that is hilarious at times, don't think I can remember rooting for a hero more since I watched, well, Rocky! Rambo 3 though, man, it's all kinda boring and emphasises the worst of Part 2. I'd hope Rambo 4 was more along the lines of First Blood, but with something a bit extra that we haven't seen. One of the things I don't like about Rambo 2 and 3 is the directing style, or lack of it. First Blood was quite simplistic, and it worked for the better of the film with no fancy camera work or anything, and the action still remains full of energy and very raw. Having seen Stallone direct 4 of the Rocky films, I'd like to see him direct Rambo 4 if it gets made. I'm glad Rocky Balboa has done well at the box office, already grossed twice the budget so worldwide takings should be a great boost. Oh, and I hope everyone had a great new year, I certainly did. Cheers, and peace!

Perfect Sci-Fi vehicle for him. Hero is in great shape for his age, ultra-violent martial arts styled fights, female nudity(think LIFEFORCE), and cool aliens(non-humanoid for a change). Adding Dolph, Mark Dacascos, Eva Green and Jackie Chan would be an amazing plus. I can't see anyone but Sly in this role. Book is by Rutledge Etherdige. Look for it.

    by solitaire

You know, not too long ago I was re-watching First Blood, and something my dad (who was in Vietnam) did when I first saw it twenty years ago came back to me. When you finally break down at the end in front of Trautman, and all the emotion and pain just comes rushing out in this rambling speech, like you hadn't had anyone to really talk to or confide in for so long, I happened to look over at my dad, a hard man, and he was slowly nodding with this sad look on his face. You captured it perfectly, the hell these people felt. In that moment, you made me a lifelong fan.
Thanks Sly, and congrats on a truly great film in Rocky Balboa

    by darthmartel

thanks so much Sly. That movie really went back to Rocky's roots and put the character full circle with a happy ending. I especially loved how Rocky didn't even give a shit what the decision was and just got out of the ring to start the rest of his life. I was slightly disappointed Rocky didn't knock Dixon out because his character was a disrespectful punk. The feel and the tone of the film was spot on. I was hoping Rocky would beat out that Ben Still piece of shit but, I guess the parents thought that was better for the kids. I for one appreciated your work and look forward to Rambo if you ever get those fuckers in Thailand to pull that rice pattie out of their asses and greenlight it. Hope the New Year for you is a great one. Thanks again.

That's one of the silliest subject lines I've ever written. Well, I just wanna say how achingly beautiful it feels to have you in my cyber-life. I think we all here probably feel the same. As for ROCKY BALBOA, I took my best friend and my sister (who had to be dragged) to see your film and WE ADORED IT!!! WE LOVED IT!!! My sister was so pleasantly surprised. Thank you for making it. You accomplished your goal and now you can concentrate on the future. I wish you much success with RAMBO 4 and POE and the B.I.G. projects. I will gladly be there for all of them. I have a few requests for ya if you're interested. PLEASE HOST SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE SOMETIME THIS SEASON. You're Sly wit was clearly evident in your Q&A on this site. And you seemed to be having fun playing the Toymaker in Spy Kids 3-D. Am I right? Comedy is in ya!!! How about a Toymaker spin-off film? I love you Sly, in a manly brotherly love kind of way, of course. When ARNOLD leaves office, give us that buddy pic we've all been yearning for. Also, you should pop up on Milo Ventimiglia's show HEROES. It would be a great episode(s). And finally, I'd like to wish you and your loved ones a very HAPPY NEW YEAR, BUDDY!!! You deserve it!!! Thanks for everything.....yours truly, Christian.

Sly... Some suggestions for RAMBO IV

    by flim_

I know this is off topic, but maybe a delay in RAMBO IV might open up some avenues... I was watching RAMBO today with a friend, and we decided that the new Rambo film might be best served by having John Milius do at least a draft of the screenplay. It seems to us that Milius might have a lot to say on that character, and has written things like, oh, APOCALYPSE NOW, and CONAN THE BARBARIAN, so he seems to understand the poet warrior mindset. I heard his draft on A CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER cost the studio a Chevy Suburban packed full of cuban cigars, so he's a colourful fellow, at least. Regardless, it's something to look at. Oh, and incidentally, think about hiring Joel Goldsmith to do the score...That's all the suggestions from me for now... Peace in the new year!

I enjoyed Rocky Balboa so much, I returned to see it again yesterday. I lost a beloved pet on Sunday and while the film didn't completely distract me from that, I will say that it was just as enjoyable as the first time around. Particularly that speech in the street with Rocky's son. So well-written and delivered. /// I also have a question, if you ever have the time and/or inclination to answer us again. You had answered a question regarding your favorite stunt men. Have you had an opportunity to see Buster Keaton's work? While he wasn't the first stunt man in films, I know several stunt men who assert that he was one of the best. A good example of his stunt work is in OUR HOSPITALITY. Give him a try for some brilliant stunt work. Thanks again for hearing us - you're truly a class act. Can't wait for your next project - keep us updated!

Your new movie is truly inspiring. After watching it, I felt that I needed to go back and re-watch the entire series over again. You see, the first time I saw the first Rocky films, it was a magical experience. Now, it seems, surreal and an entire lifetime ago. I grew up with you and your movies, along with the ever-present Bill Conti theme and with Philadelphia as a perfect canvass. I thank you, Sly, for instilling in me the need to go back to the life I left behind and to reminisce, once again, on the greatness of one of America's true heroes.

Sly, You Ever Hear Of Willie Pep??

    by robleone

Great old boxer from my neighborhood here in CT. Well, he recently passed away. He was friends with my Grandfather and they used to hang out at the Casa Loma Restauraunt in Hartford. Anyway, whenever I went to the restaurant with my Grandfather and Mr. Pep was there, he'd tell us his old boxing stories, especially the four fights he had with Sandy Sadler. Another reason Rockky Balboa brought me to tears were the scenes of Rocky in Adrians telling your(or his) stories. It brought back some good memories of hanging out at The Casa Loma with my grandfather and his friend, the local legend Willie Pep!!

    Biggie and Tupac

    by jeremym1

I really hope the Biggie/Tupac project comes to fruition. I've read a lot on it and it's really a pretty interesting conspiracy. One of the things I've noticed is you have a situation where you have two of the most popular rappers, murdered in front of tons of witnesses that won't cooperate, murdered most likely by other African-Americans (probably even black cops in Biggie's case), and the only one who has made any progress on the case and seems to care is a white cop named Russell Poole. I thought the "Biggie and Tupac" documentary was pretty well done and states it's case pretty strongly that Suge Knight killed Biggie and hints that he may have killed his own "friend" Tupac as well. Poole and Volette Wallace, Biggie's mom, are the only ones that come out looking good in this story, in my opinion, and the only ones that really want to find the murderers. There's tons of angles one could take with this project, and I can't wait to see what Stallone does with it. Also, can't wait to see Rocky Balboa again!

Someone needs to make him a regular contributor and give him the black box highlight privilege. Rocky Balboa was my most satisfying movie experience all year. I'll never forget driving into the city with my boy, pumping Rocky music. And then driving through Times Square with the windows down, music blasting. And then in the theater shouting "Rocky, Rocky!" What a great night and a real capper for 2006! Thanks Sly and much respect!

    by ronniepooch

I just wanted you to know that as part of my family's Christmas gift (after loving it the first time I saw it when it came out last week) I decided to bring the entire family to the movies to see Rocky Balboa the day after Christmas. It was special for both my dad and me (since he brought me to see Rocky's 2-4 in the theater back in the good ol days). Sharing this final Rocky moment was really cool, and we both thank you for that. Will you plan on putting together a BlueRay boxed set with you, Burt Young and perhaps Mr. T (sitting in on director commentaries) for the future? Would be really really awesome to see Rocky in high Def.

Sly, thank you for inspiring me to box all those years ago. My 9 year old son watched Rocky 2 and asked me to teach him to box. He was runner up at the Jr. Golden Gloves. It was quite an accomplishment given the fact that he is autistic and that he competed against kids that weren't special needs. I still say he wuz robbed!

ROCKY II - THE KID IN THE ORANGISH-RED VEST!!

    by gibsonusa returns

Everyone watch Rocky II again. Remember during the training montage when Rocky outruns the kids on his way to the steps? Every one of the kids slows down as Rocky speeds up....except this ONE kid in an orange vest who looks at the camera, then bursts up at the last second trying to catch Rocky! He almost does! Haha,if I was a kid there that's what I would do....look at the camera then do one final burst attempt! :)

By the way Sly, if you are reading and still remember me, here's my myspace profile in case you were wondering what one of your boys looks like: :) http://tinyurl.com/yb9wq5

    Pretty stunning work, Mr. Stallone...

    by akirakaneda

The Thursday after Christmas, my wife and I finally got out for a bit and went to see the film that has taken over AICN...and we loved the heck out of it. My wife's description was this: "I kept waiting for it to get cheesy...and it never happened!" She called it "fantastic," and she's hardly the audience for this film. For a movie that had already been out a couple of weeks, to be with a theater half-full (on a Thursday night, no less) of folks who were really into the film was just great. The fact that no major reviewer really seems to realize is that the film deals with a subject that virtually no movie in the last several years has dealt with seriously, which is the devaluing of those in our country over 50. All of us will be there sooner than we think! The fact that I kept getting a lump in my throat...man, I have never been so surprised in my life. Just an excellent movie all the way around, and I have to admit that my view might be affected by the fact that Mr. Stallone has made friends with us here. Wow...I'm not a fan of the Rambo films, but you might just be selling a ticket there too. AICN pays off for the truly faithful!

On another note. Did you ever hear of Team Hoyt? Now that's a true underdog story you might be interested in. It's about an ex-colonal of the air national guard who contends with his son in triathlons etc... Here's a youtube link. Quite inspirational.

Sly, should you choose to do this project and treat it with the respect I know you will, my hat is off to you. I've never understood how 2 of the years biggest selling recording artist could be violently murdered within a few months of each other and no one was ever brought to justice. This coupled with (former) Officer Poole's work, that British Doc BIGGIE&TUPAC, the book LAbyrinth, Mrs. Wallace's lawsuits, Rampart - it's all just too much. How the hell are you going to be able to shed light on the truth Mr. Stallone? I feel that this is your most important motion picture and only someone of your sature in Hollywood could get it made.
BTW- Thank you for a lifetime of great movies. You are a hero to all . . .

Hey Sly, I know the answers are done with, but I would have asked: If you were at all nervous when Hopkins beat Tarver. I mean did you think it might damage the chances of the movie? Or had it crossed your mind?

I'm glad everythings turned out great anyway. My first rocky movie was rocky 4, saw it back in the early 90's on tv as a kid. Used to jump up and down on the sofa as the music kicked in - good times.

Anyway, thanks for a fantastic movie series. I'll be at the front of the que when rocky balboa reaches Ireland.

Just keep 'em coming! I think a lot of us were surprised at how much we missed you! Follow your heart, stick with quality, and make your family proud. By the way, the dresses your girls were wearing in some of the premier pictures I've seen remind me of dresses my mom would dress me in as a kid. Jennifer has a lot of style and taste. All my friends just about died when they found out Stallone was doing these talkbacks, and even more excited when they learned of Rambo IV. I hope the Thailand situation gets resolved soon, or at least a new shooting location is chosen. I am dying to see another Rambo film with Stallone! Thanks for still reading, Sly!

    Saw Balboa last week...

    by evil lincoln

...and thought it was one of the most heartfelt movies I've seen in a long time. It was the perfect send off for Rocky and his universe. The only problem I had was when someone a few seats down from me got a phone call on their cell right during the middle of Rocky/Mason's final round. I about wanted to strangle her with my bare hands and when the fight was over, she was confused about what had happened and grabbed me by the shoulder and asked me what just happened. I went ahead and played the nice guy and told her what happened but I should have told her the next time she needs to turn her damn cell off and pay attention. Ack, sometimes being the nice guy isn't all that fun.

Thanks for a great movie, Sly. Here's hoping that the next Rambo film is just as great.

Mr. Stallone, I've seen Rocky Balboa twice now. Love it both times, but that's not why I'm writing this. Sly,

I just want to congratulate you on making Rocky Balboa the best possible film it could be. The film was everything I hoped it would be and more. While I've enjoyed all the Rockys this one ranks right up there with the first and second films which have always been my favorites. You breathed new life into the Rocky saga and gave us a touching film that will be remembered.

(Just make sure to let any of your Hollywood pals know that we'll expect nothing less than the kind of class and warmth that you've shown- while the shit may run deep around here, we can still smell a rat.) by gorrister

I'm not a big fan of sequels. Sure, there are some sequels I enjoy (and even a couple that are actually better than the original), but they are rare. My favorite Sly movies have always been either the first in a series or a stand-alone work. Loved the first Rocky, First Blood, Judge Dredd, Demolition Man, Spy Kids and the like. Sly has talant and I'd like to see it put to better use than just portraying the same character over and over again. But then, I guess someone in his position can make whatever movies he enjoys. If you don't enjoy your work, then what's the point. Right? :) (Personally, I think Sly's comedy talants have been sadly underused in movies in the past. The guy has great comedic timing)

    Sly,
Thank You for RB!! My mother just died 6 months ago from cancer and I have to say.. Thank You for your beautiful writing. RB was better then the first Rocky!! Very Touching.

    Please Do these things:

1)PLEASE do New Rocky SPECIAL EDITIONS DVD- for Rocky 2,3,4 & 5 ( please do Commentary Tracks for all of them, Documentaries for all of them, Extras, Deleted Scenes for all of them!)

    2) Please make a Director's Cut of Rocky Balboa DVD! I think the middle end felt a slightly rushed to get it at 1:42. I think actually if you feathered out the middle end (before the fight - training - vegas hotel room)do commentary track, deleted scenes, etc.

    3) Please Do the Quentin Movie!! NEXT - before Rambo (I'd hold off on doing another sequal, you are getting amazing press and push with RB.) Do the Quentin Movie, then do the Rambo thing a few years from now. ( IF the Rambo thing has to come first, cool... BUT please do the Quentin Movie)

Throughout the movie, I felt your gut wrenching love for this character and the world around him. It came through all the way throughout the movie. I loved that Adrian was ALWAYS there,as she should be.
If I had to change a couple of things , it would be to have more of character developement for your son, and of course to have more time spent on your training!! I love those parts!!

    Yo, SLY!

    by bastard_guy180

This is very cool my friend, I hope you do in fact get to read this. I was always hesistant to watch the Rocky movies as I'm not a real boxing fan. I am however I huge fan of cinema, I'm a minor film maker myself and I think my instincts are pretty damn good. I'm currently in theatre now, in college and I've been going through a rough patch; dealing with a lot of people who don't really have my best interest, a lot of whom would love to see me fail.

After watching the Rocky series including Rocky Balboa, I just really feel empowered to believe in myself. It's amazing how often we forget this simple bit of advice and I can think of no other set of films that foster said advice better than the Rocky films.

Your newest effort is incredible and brave and more importantly it touched be deeply. In my limited experience as a film maker I know that that is the most important thing someone can tell me about one of my films. So if you do in fact read this, I really feel as though that is something you should know. Thanks SLY!

    by abcdefghijklmnop

...about that "Pearl of the Cobra" title? Is it just temporary or will that really be the name of the finished film? I'm also curious what he thinks about future Rambo sequels. If 4 is a hit, the studio has hinted that they would like to continue with a 5, etc. I have to be honest, I wouldn't mind seeing a few films centering on an older Rambo. Not to mention, having 6 Rocky films and 6 Rambo films would probably bring some kind've balance to the universe.

    A New Take on Deathwish

    by charlie allnut

First of all, went to see Rocky Balboa and thoroughly enjoyed it. Would never have gone if you hadn't done this. Thank you.

A while back you asked about a new take on death wish. You also talked about your increasingly deepening faith. So, here's a real kicker-twist on death wish. What if your character suffered these horrible losses and really *wanted* to kill the various punks but couldn't because of his faith. Just as Rocky doesn't always need to "win" to be victorious, could you make an action hero who defeats his enemies and his demons without killing or hurting? Destruction is easy. Redemption--now that's a challenge.

Finally getting a chance to see it.

    by kingharvest

I'm finally going to be seeing Rocky Balboa tomorrow when I get back to Toronto. I'd planned on watching it while I was home for the holidays, but the theatre here has played nothing but kid's movies for the past three weeks. I got so exasperated that I finally ended up emailing the owner of the cinema, and after exchanging a few subtle barbs back and forth, was basically told that he knows what people want to see, and I don't — and did not appear ashamed to admit that his motivation was purely financial (at Christmas time, no less). It's really disappointing to me that the people of this town won't get a chance to see this film on the big screen, if they want to (without alot of driving). I'm glad I'll be able to do so.

On the plus side, it gave me time to rewatch the entire series over again. I gotta say, Rocky V has to be one of the most underrated films of all time. It's easily better than Rocky IV, which adds almost nothing to the story, and it more true to the original than III. That flashback scene with Mick in Rocky V has to be one of the most moving things you've ever put on film, Sly. My only complaint, really, is Tommy Morrison — who I don't think had the acting chops to carry that important of a role.

Anyway, I'm really pumped about seeing the new Rocky tomorrow. And I'll probably see it again on the weekend, with my girlfriend... who by pure coincidence happens to be named Adrienne. Or atleast I tell her it's a coincidence.

    I Liked Rocky V Too

    by captdanielroe

I think one could certainly see Rocky Balboa without having seen it but that the two movies are a very important pair, a story in their own right.

I seem to recall some mention of Death Wish in these interviews. It may have occurred to you that the series would truly come full circle (not that that's necessarily a good thing) if Rocky were to once again become involved in the underworld. He has regained the top, and no doubt the respect of the street, but with it the street's attention, and what happens when the... I'm not even gonna finish the thought; that's for you to pen if so inclined.

Mr. Stallone, just wanted to ask you: What do you consider the most important part of storytelling, writing a plot around a certain character, or writing a character to fit a certain plot? And which would you consider Rocky to be?

IF you could get something even remotely resembling a female to go to the flick with you, and IF you're man enough to capitalize on the warm fuzzies that the flick is gonna generate in her, and IF you can get an erection without having to watch Brokeback Mountain (which you all ready said you like that gay shit, you fucking turd) then you MAY stand a chance of getting some trim. I suspect that even trim from the troglodite-looking half crippled she-thing you could land would do you a WORLD of good.

Well you should, it's always good to hear from you and you would make a welcome addition to AICN. By the sounds of it youve been bitten by the internet bug. It would be good to hear from you on life in general, hollywood, and hell, maybe throw in some movie reviews. Not a daily gig or something, like once every couple of months or something. THE DEFINITIVE MOMENT of ROCKY BALBOA

    by poetic colossus

Honestly, I can’t believe how many people haven’t commented on what, for me personally, is the defining moment of the movie. That or I’m an assclown for missing another moment that was much more profound.

It was towards the end of the fight – Rocky is getting shiznits beat out of him. Misery, misery, misery – served by the bucket.

One shot puts him down for the count, and behold we have our classic “Rocky shrugs off a nuclear warhead to get back to his feet” moment. Excuse my run-on sentences if you will.

But it’s not the act of rising ever so slowly to his feet with the crowd going ape-shit – fuck that. It’s the *look* that Rocky gives Mason Dixon – and Mason’s reaction in turn.

“Wait – oh fuck! Let me wipe this nut off my face!”

That moment sent chills down my spine (No, not Mason figuratively wiping a nut off his face you jackasses) – every collective piece of Rocky lore could be summed into that one definitive stare of ultimate defiance by Rocky Balboa.

    Damn, that was good.

Anyways, my wife wouldn’t stop raving about the movie, I had a boner watching it and everyone I have talked to has had nothing but positive things to say about the performance as a whole.

    Nothing but love, Sly!

I finally saw Rocky V tonight.

    by proper

It was ok and there were things I enjoyed about the film but really if I'd of seen it when it came out I would've been pissed(not Star Wars 1-3 pissed but you know =O) to say the least. The fact that the fortune was taken away from the family and they had to revert back to their pre prosperity envioroment and garments was ill (fact that Adrian had to go back to her 1970 glasses was silly, she should've taken Paulies baseball bat to the robot and Paulie for that matter, that guy needed a smack or at least a pay off, geez didn't Rocky and Adrian learn that Paulie wan't equipped for such decisions, gawds sake didn't they ever chat with Apollo about saving etc??,made me resent them, that aint cool).Rocky went crazy and lost the life experience and maturity he gained in III and IV(it wasn't brain damage come onn maaannnn). The acting by all of the players was good(Gunn didn't offend me,the kid was fine,Don King was Don King like, though Rocky was hamming it up =>),however the story reminded me of why I went off only fools and horses(top English show),when people strive for something and acheive it and then you take it away it just leads to resentment and anger towards the characters rather than sympathy. The final straw for me would've been Elton John singing about being a man at the end http://tinyurl.com/gxyt5 (I was thinking of this image at the time,God help me,I'm ill) =>,was Frank busy????,and the hip hop tunes dated the film more than the others.Poor Adrian,a kind but weak woman, surrounded by idiots her whole life. What a downer, glad part 6 is coming to right those wrongs(hopefully,Jan 19th maaaaan what are the prints coming by train and boat)Jeez if I'd of seen Godfather III and Rocky V when they came out I'd be a pissed off TB'er to this day.Time is the healer.Saying that, good to see Mr Stallone popping his head round the door to see whats going on,big up sir, hope things are kool with you.Happy new year everybody,I've got flu thats why I can kotch at home watching Rocky Films and get so sedated that I dont get vexed(I did imagine getting chased by BS goats with flaming hooves though),take it EZ.Yo Wldmk I DID IT!!!!!.

    by leadley

There are three elements coming together all at once that demand attention: 1. Stallone's huge comeback with Rocky VI. 2. Kurt Russle's soon to be coming comeback with Grindhouse. And 3. Science fiction green screen movies. So what one film would be able to combind this trifunda collective in one single celluloid explosion? Five words: TANGO AND CASH IN SPACE.

    by leadley

I think it would be important to not muck it up with a lot of in-jokes. I really think the illusion would be broken with a cameo by Goldie Hawn as the pilot of a cargo space freighter named 'OV3RB8RD' or a scene where some galactic trooper goes, "Who the f*ck does he think he is? The Demolition Man?" No, I'm pretty sure you just want to play it straight. Some good ol' 80's Stallone and Russel hard boiled, tough-as-nails action. Or should I say, tough-as-SPACE-nails...

    by leadley

I'm not a fan of CGI. Never have been, never will be. I'm sure there will be those of you who instist that the folks at Industrial Light & Magic CGI Jack Palance into T&CIS. Now please, hear me out. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by my suggestioned. How about a ROBOT that just LOOKS like Jack Palance? In fact, if it hasn't been thrown away, they could use the one they made for City Slickers 2. (If Billy Crystal is willing to lease it out.) Also, is that Chinese guy bad guy dead? He was also Lohan in Big Trouble in Little China. ALSO with Kurt Russel. How great would it be to see Kurt Russel and that Chinese guy team up one last time? (One other robot you could have would be that half-retard guy who built the All Attack ATV. Remember him? He also played the half-retard in the Steve Martin movie where he was the big nose. I love that half-retard guy.)

My REQUIREMENTS for the TANGO & CASH IN SPACE movie..

    by gibsonusa returns

1.) Fishbowls over Tango & Cash's heads for oxygen as they float around in space. They wear Hawaiian shirts, shorts, and flip-flops.
2.) Wires and popsicle sticks are visible at all times.
3.) Tango & Cash both hang on to a giant fire extinguisher to propel them through space.
4.) Stallone stands on the hood of a flying Cadillac with a guitar and jams. Musical notes fly out of the guitar and kill enemies. (a la Silverhawks)
5.) Gary Coleman as the sarcastic wisecracking sidekick. He is dressed in a foam cockroach outfit, wears a crown, and moves about space by fluttering his six foam legs. he has a Cabbage Patch Kid tied to his back.

Okay, one final word for the evening regarding T&CIS

    by leadley

Tango and Cash must find the center of the universe somewhere beyond "the great barriar" where an all-powerful god-like entitiy needs a starship to cross back over the Great Barriar. And the god-like entity is played by polymorphing Wilfred Brimley. And Tango and Cash refuse to take any shit from him. And then, just when all is lost, and Brimley-god is about to smite T&C, the space monkey accidentally reprograms Palancabot and Palancabot exits teh pod bay doors, just cool as shit, just taking his godamn time about it, and says to Brimley-god, "You an' me, we got business." And while those two are kicking ass, T&C and the space monkey hightail it the f*ck out of there and return to earth just as the center of the universe big bangs again. Roll credits.

I say we should keep helping Sly with some long term goals: 1) Keep talking positive reviews to go see ROCKY BALBOA in theatres. 2) Push for Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences OSCAR consideration for ROCKY BALBOA: Best Film, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Score, Best Cinematography. 3) Sly, this one is for you: please push for an Ultimate Edition Rocky movie DVD set (all 6 movies) like Talkbacker Stallone82 described, collect voice commentaries from everyone, interviews, behind the scenes docs, anything and everything. My suggestion to add, just like Lord Of the Rings had a statue in the DVD box, how cool would it be to have a small sized replica of the Rocky Statue? Please include a great DVD menu, box, and DVD design, one that will awe us. Boxing related motifs, maybe also Philly and Mickey's gym motifs; the old boxing posters; Italian Stallion logo, boxing stats for all your opponents; Maybe add a great picture book. Give us a classy DVD set that we'll be more than happy to collect. Sly you know we all support you-- keep punchin'-- you're on a roll!! George Edwards

RudyRusso was one of those kids in high school

    by darthmartel

or IS one of those kids in high school that's all goth and thinks he's the only cool kid in school because nobody "gets" because he's so avant garde. Nobody really pays attention to him because his schtick is such a poorly veiled cry for attention that acknowledging his existence seems a complete waste of time. The only physical contact he gets is that of those bumping into him in the hallway because they don't really notice him there or getting his ass kicked by the girls lacrosse team as a precursor to practice. He's a sad example of what happens when parents don't parent their children and just leave them to watch MTV and Nickleodean only to have people like the chuckleheads on the Real World, MTV VJ's and Spongebob Squarepants as their child's role models and basis for interpersonal relations. It's really not his fault he's the douchebag that he is. Really, it's his father's fault for being too cheap to buy a 3 pack of rubbers and too stupid to pull out and deposit his seed on RudyRusso's $2 whore of a mother's face.

Best advice on how to handle him in the future is just ignore him since his ideas and comments are nothing but, cries for attention. Be gone nimrod. Go back to your World of Warcraft and floggin your dolphin over internet pics of Avril Lavigne.

And would somebody please ban that MCMLXXVI guy already? The Transformers were pretty cool as a kid but, honestly, if Michael Bay fucks up the new movie who gives a flying shit? It's a damn movie. If you're that sad where you have to hold toys that "transform" from cars or aircraft into robots with such high regard where you have to deify them and curse the name of a director who changes whatever your preconceived notion of them is for a movie then you really should seek psychological help. At least get a friggin life man. Move out of your mom's basement and join the world. Girls are not the devil and there's many things worth experiencing.

    good day to all

Sly's Commentary on the new Rocky DVD

    by admiral_snackbar

Sly's commentary on the new edition of Rocky is probably the most interested and insightful commentary I've heard in years, and actually made me appreciate the film even more. So Sly, if you're reading, I'd love to hear commentary on all the Rocky movies, if they are ever released as special editions. Especially if we get to hear some "I don't know what I was thinking with this one..." I'm also one of the few who likes Rocky V, my only problem was that it didn't really feel like it had a conclusion, it just kind of ended. Thankfully that meant we got Rocky Balboa.

    Long Live Sly!!!

    by splinter76

Hey, Sly!!!! My wife and I LOVED Rocky Balboa. She cried like a baby and I couldn't help but stand and cheer at the end. Hell.... when THE THEME started to play for the training montage, me and several other people started clapping!

I'm going to see it again this weekend.

I want the life-time, domestic gross of this movie to kick all the studios that turned you down right smack in their tiny, shriveled balls!

Calling all friends and fans of Sly to push this movie to $100 million!!! We can do it! We can make this the surprise hit of late 2006 to 2007!

Anyway... I know I'm going to see it at least 3 more times.

    We love you, Sly!

    Reviews and opinions....

    by zaphodbeeblerox

I tell my kids all of the time that two people can sit and watch the same exact movie and one person will love it and the other person hate it. You can't change people's opinions and they have the right to think and believe what they want. It doesnt make their opinions any more or less valid then yours...just different. To those folks here that didnt enjoy the film and can express why the movie didnt work for you, more power to you. To those who seem to just want to slam the film because of Mr. Stallone, well that says more about your character then I care to here. There will never be a film that everyone universally will love. We all have too varied of tastes for that to happen. The vast majority of the folks here greatly enjoy the movie and acknowledge that fact that Sly's initial involvement with the board was to help with promotion, but still appreciate him taking the time out to do so. Not many other actors/directors take the time to interact with the movie going public even in an indirect way such as this. Has it helped the bottom line financially for Rocky Balboa? Probably. Do I feel like I was used by this? Not at all. The finished product up there on the screen was well acted, well written and a wonderful character ensemble piece in my opinion. Would I have ventured to see it if not for Sly's involvement here on AICN? To be honest, I dont know. What I do know is that I was glad that I did go and am planning on going back for a second show this weekend. It's natural to want to shout down those talkbackers who dont agree with us about something that we enjoy so much. Dont get mad though..get even. Let your money do the talking at the box office. ;-)

Rocky Balboa was supposed to suck

    by iamthomas

like all pictures Sly did in the past decade. I lost faith in his abilities to be part of even a decent movie. And I guess, like in RB, he showed all those folks like me (and there were quite a few) that a) he´s still got it in him and b)give us something to remember him by that´s not dating back 20 years. Thank you for that and sorry for doubting you, but it´s been a long time.

    by dede

Sly, thank you for perseveering to make RB. It was just as you said, a perfect goodbye. You should always remember that you have done something that few have ever done, and that is to create a character that so many people identify with and love. I have heard many interviews where you speak of the people of Philly, and what Rocky means to them, but just know that there are people all over the world that feel the same. Thank you for giving us Rocky, and thank you for being you. If you are ever in Louisiana, look me up. My husband and I would love to give you and Jen a tour of the area on a Harley. (You can even borrow mine)

My Problems with Rocky Balboa: Acting

    by behemoth

This ain't no slam of the film, because overall, I was very pleased. Stallone was fantastic in it, as was Uncle Paulie and most of the main players. Where the film took a downturn for me, almost drawing me out of the experience at times, was in the acting of a lot of the secondary players. I mean, I'm not expecting great performances here, just passable. The two scumbag managers of Mason Dixon? Horrible. These guys performed their lines like they were reading them off cue cards for the first time with parenthetical comments telling them to make gesticulations with their hands. They were just horrendous. Then there's the ESPN guys during the fight. Yeah, I know they're legitimate broadcasters, so you are choosing realism over great acting chops here, and I'm fine with that, but, maybe it was more the lines they were delivering that seemed ridiculous. I mean, after the fifth line about, "I thought Balboa was extinct, well he's about to be," it was like, "OKAY, I get it, he's a big underdog, I understand." And then there was Mason Dixon. I liked the fact that his character was so absolutely night and day different from Balboa, AND that he wasn't turned into some uber-villain. That was cool. But again, his horrendous acting really took away from what could've catapulted the movie from "pleasant surprise" to "simply fantastic." His scene in the gym with those two managers, where he decides to go back to his original manager, should have been a huge moment in the film, but the performances were so bad, so lightweight, that it just registered a big zero on the emotion scale for me. So, Sly, great job on the film overall. I just wish some of the secondary characters' performances were not so overlooked, because they DO add a LOT to the overall feel of the film. YOUR performance, however, was friggin' stellar.

A character I would love to see Stallone play:

    by abovo

I would love to see Stallone play a character based upon the actual account of Cyrus the Great and tell his story leading up to his conquest of Babylon in 539 BCE. In brief, this king led the Persian army to become a foretold world empire after defeating the Babylonian Empire in a most unique way, by diverting the Euphrates River. Bible profits Isaiah & Jeremiah pointed to this ahead of time. (Isaiah 13:17-19; 44:27-45:1) Daniel was a contemporary eyewitness, thus the account about the ‘handwriting on the wall.’ (Daniel 5:22-29) There is a lot of potential development material to build this story on. http://tinyurl.com/ylbgs7

    Great Characters Live Forever,..Rocky,..Paulie

    by theheavy

I took my son and my dad to see Rocky Balboa last Friday ,...Three generations of TheHeavy "WOW" first I couldnt believe I was actually taking my son to a Rocky movie,..so for that THANKS,..The characters of Rocky and Paulie are just so well done thru-out all the films that these guys will never die, never get old ,..they will live forever in my heart,..The scene where Paulie loses it for a second and basically begs Rocky to
stop the constant mourning,..not because hes sick of it but it just keeps reminding him that he wasnt as nice to Adrian as he should have been ,..and that hit hard,..theres nothing like regret and no way shed that regret,...also The Rubber Tree Plant tune from Frank was great,...Im sure you know that was JFKs campain song ,..thats why Frank sung it.Outstanding seeing you on the big screen again ,I read all the answers to the questions and printed out a copy to every question and gave it to my dad who is not exactly internet savvy and he loved it too..Happy New Year to you and your family

I have to admitt, it is more than a bit frustrating!! You guy's all talk about how great ROCKY BALBOA is, and what about me?? I am sitting in cold and rainy Switzerland and have to wait another month!!!!!! IT IS frustrating!!! So, Mister Stallone, why wasn't it possible to have a worldwide release??? Comon, if LOTR can do it, it should have been no problem for Rocky!!! :-))) but i understand, and there is an old saying that the wait is the most fun :-)) So, i am looking forward to see Rocky this February, somewhere here in Zurich. If you read this, Mr. Stallone, thank you agani for such great stories and Characters. Also from here all the best and a happy new Year. Still hoping to catch a glance of you on one of the European Premiers :-)) Cheers

However, reading the Q & A's with Stallone has left me giddy to the point I could no longer resist the urge to put my thoughts out here for all to read. I realize I cannot possibly say anything here that hasn't already been said, but I just have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed the latest and final Rocky. I was stoked to see it even before I heard Sly was doing the Q & A's but it has given me a greater appreciation of all that is Stallone! First thing I did after seeing Rocky was go out and see Demolition Man because I just HAD to understand the three seashells question!!! hahaha Anywho, big thumbs up for Rocky Balboa and good luck to the Man, himself, in future endeavors! Oh I doubt the Academy will recoginize this, and I do admit that my liking of this movie stems partly from my age group, but you have to be blind not to see that Sly poured his heart and soul into this movie. by gibsonusa returns

Someone here said he thought they performed like they were reading off cue cards. Um, I thought that COMPLIMENTED the characters. They are managers/promoters....by nature they are fake fake smiley smiley. They are supposed to sound like used car salesmen with their mental list of pre-prepared lines that they spit out. When they went to Rocky's place, they knew what they were trying to do, and what they were going to say. They had their "sales/persuasive" faces on and dealt like a car salesman would.

They actually started with IV at 7. I got in from work halfway thru and noticed it and V were repeated again. First time seeing V. I suppose it's not the worst thing I've seen but a brilliant film it ain't. However, Sly inhabits that character, no matter how good or bad the film and I respect him for that. The Spike channel will be showing First Blood next week and that I'm looking forward to. I haven't seen it since its release.

As far as buying the anthology, $27 at Amazon isn't bad for a 5 DVD set, but as a lot of people have said, there are no commentaries. Gotta think about it. I will pick up the Rocky collector's addition soon, though. Then again, pissing off the trolls may just be worth forking over the $27...

Most of my friends don't believe it's really Sly .....

    by gibsonusa returns

A lot of my friends are Stallone fans and would be posting here, but they absolutely do not believe that that is really Sly on the other end. To them, it simply has to be "some helper" who is assigned to take care of online public relations. And that would kinda sorta make sense I guess.
But who knows? I am very appreciative to Sly for doing this in the first place, and keep thanking him. I do believe 100% that at least in the beginning of the Q&A that that was really him on the other end. And I believe there is a good chance he's still hanging out with us now. :P But to me, either way is fine. I'm happy to be here talking about a great movie and a great actor/director.
Mr. Stallone, if that's you over there, you're my Hollywood hero and you rock.
Celeste, if that's you over there, you're beautiful & thank you for dealing with us. You rock.
And if it's "some helper" like my friends say, you rock too for getting such a cool job!! haha :P

    by mace tofu

It's because you feel better after seeing Sly's movie so when we run back here to post about it we are still feeling happy. My wife was talking on the phone about RB to my teenage niece today telling her it was a good movie to see (3 days later she is still happy I took her to see RB). What's wrong with feeling happy? Plus when was the last time you did something for your wife ( or girl/boyfriend) that made her/him happy for days after and cost you less than $20? Thank you Sly!

Ok,I've kinda had it with these haters insulting us.

    by gibsonusa returns

"No Little Marie, it ain't okay."
I've kind of had it up to here with these guys coming in here and trying to personally insult Mr. Stallone, and personally insult us. Words are just words,I know. This is just an online thing and it's not really a big deal. But these guys have, without cause, consistently & recklessly thrown insult after insult.
Mr. Stallone is like a big deal to me, it's been such an honor to have him here, but these guys are just ruining it for no reason.

Listen jerks, it ain't cocky if you back it up. And it ain't asskissing if the words are real. I don't see anyone here asskissing. I see people who genuinely liked Rocky Balboa and are expressing as such.

See, unlike you haters here, the other talkbackers have a purpose. They liked Sly's movie, so they come here and tell him. Or, they watched the movie & got some criticisms, and come here to express those criticisms. They have a reason for what they do. But haters....what about YOU?? You have no purpose. You have no reason for being. You're just here running your mouth, insulting people, and saying essentially nothing.

I hope for your sake that you are very good looking fellows. Because, seeing as how you are so stupid, depressed, jaded, uneducated, and rude to people....if you don't have looks....you pretty much have no reason to exist.

Which supports why you are here in the first place. Why would someone appear in a forum about a topic they don't like? Why come here JUST for the purpose of insulting Mr. Stallone and his fans like this? I had thought it was just for fun, except you are not funny or entertaining in the least, so there goes that theory. You're so boring you can't even entertain a doubt. You're not even good for a laugh.

Hmmmm...given the type of life born with, who has accomplished more, these trolls or Rambo Cricket? It's amazing how, relatively speaking, a little insect can be more impressive than these guys. There are people out there, working hard, making friends and connections, and getting jobs done. Then there are these haters. Enjoy that cold, isolated room. You're gonna be there for awhile.

    SLY !!! Please look !!!!!!!

    by cut_me_mick

    Hey Sly,
No way for me to explain how much I love Rocky, so I won't bother. Couple of quick questions.
1)In Rocky III, between the Clubber Lang fights, while Apollo is training Rocky, there is a flashback of Rocky's second fight with Clubber (Rocky is wearing Apollo's USA trunks) that hadn't happened yet in the movie. Was Rocky viewing the future? (During the cut, Rocky hears Mickey say "He'll knock you into tomorrow, Rock) or was it just an editing mistake?

2)In every movie, there are heartbreaking scenes that get left on the editing room floor. Were there such scenes in Rocky Balboa, and could you describe some of the hardest editing choices made.

    Thanks again,
you have provided me (and millions of others) inspiration beyond measure.

Hi Sly, I've been a fan since I was 13 years old, after I saw Rocky IV. Been a HUGE fan ever since! What the world is realising now, we've known all along...you're a GREAT artist! And the reason I'm so exited to see you on top again is because as fans, we took those blows with you when everyone made fun of the way you talk, the movies that bombed...as a Stallone fan I took a lot of flack during that time...but we stuck with you and you showed all your critics man, I love it!!! You're awesome!!! You're a flesh & blood example of what you can achieve when you go for it and follow your dreams... HMB, South Africa

Coming in Very Late (Possible Spoiler Warning)

    by dersu

I just saw “Rocky Balboa” for the first time and I really enjoyed it. Definitely better than all the sequels. Not quite sure how it stacks up to the first. I'll have to think about that, but I'm glad I have to. My brother saw it with me and he pretty much agreed that it was the best since the first. It's so nice to see Rocky again, as I really never felt that the Rocky from II to V was really Rocky. Originally, Rocky Balboa was a quirky, intelligent, fascinating character, and the sequels forgot that, ultimately making most moviegoers forget that. This movie gets the characters right. Rocky isn't the macho stereotype that he more-or-less became in the other sequels (save for V, in which he was simply a parody of the original Rocky), and Paulie is no longer the comic sidekick that he pretty much became in the sequels. Rocky’s quirks are back. He’s interesting and genuinely likable and intelligent again. It’s the first time since ’76 where characters like Rocky and Paulie actually seem like real people. The fight between Balboa and Dixon is stylistically reminiscent of the street fight in V (use of black and white photography, rapid intercuts with flashbacks), except here it actually works as opposed to coming across as a lame attempt at connecting with the MTV generation. Also something I wanted to mention is how some people have criticized Antonio Tarver’s Mason Dixon character as a so-called “weak antagonist,” and I think these people are missing the point of Dixon. He’s not a villain. He’s not some obstacle for Rocky to break down. If anything, “The Line” is the most sympathetic opponent Rocky has had to face in the movies (save for perhaps Spider Rico, but that’s only because of this movie which fleshes him out a lot more). While this is Rocky’s story, it’s also a story about Dixon’s right of passage. I’d like to say more, but I don’t want to give too much away. Maybe I already have. Then again, who’s going to read this far down the forum? Anyway, I love the use of Bill Conti’s “Rocky’s Requiem” in the final credits over a static shot of Rocky standing at the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. The religious references were cleverly used here, like when Rocky asks Steps to name the dog. Religion was always a key theme in all the Rocky movies, but I think it might just be used to better effect here than in most of the other movies, seeing as the main objective isn’t really for Rocky to knockout his opponent. This time, it’s more about both characters having to pass an ordeal that ultimately better them for it. I realize that IV had a similar theme, but it was trampled by the generally exaggerated cheesiness of the story and characters. In fact, there are other elements from the sequels that “Rocky Balboa” takes and improves upon, including the father-son relationship. I also like how this movie points out the positive effect that Rocky’s actions have on those around him, which also reinforces the religious aspects in a way the other sequels didn’t. Something I personally would have liked to see is a scene where Rocky seeks out Duke to train him again, as I felt that that character kind of came out of nowhere, but that’s a minor concern. Anyway, I really liked it and it gives me hope for “Poe” and “Pearl of the Cobra.” By the way, does anyone know if Marion Cobretti makes a guest appearance in “Pearl of the Cobra?” Just kidding.

Hi,I am 31 alltime Sly fan from Czech republik. When I was 13,I decided to start colect some material about some famous peaple, like another kids. But I didn´t know, which star. And in this time I saw Over the top and then Rocky IV! IN one moment I was in another world! So I focused to colect everything about Sly. But can you imagine, how difficult is find some material about capitalism movie star in comunism east block in 1987? I bought films on black market, second copy vhs ,terrible quality :-),but I was in heaven. Some pictures and posters also copy on katastrofic paper :-). This illegal black market start every sunday 4 o´clock morning till 7 and every weekend another place, because of police. Now it seems funny, but in those days... I admire Sylvester´s ,,Never give up spirit " . And this spirit is still with him, till now,so I think ,that in my 13 I bet not on the good horse, but the best horse! :-) PS: On my 18 bday,I wanted Sly face tatoo on my shoulder. My girlfriend cried, told me-please,hold on one year, maybe you will not like it,it´s forever! I keep long time, and on my 30 I did it. She is already 10 years my wife and she knows, that her competitor Sylvester Stallone is very tough :-)) Happy new year Sylvester! Marek Klasek

    by riskebiz

I'd like to see Rocky become a HBO series. I think the last film could segued very nicely into that. I'd like to see Rocky, Paulie, Jr., Marie and the rest and what happens next ... just not in a movie form. Series would be great. The enviroment is rich for it in location and character. The restaurant ... Mickey's Gym ... Jr. on Wall Street ... it's perfect.______ So, Sly .... how 'bout it?

    Notorious

    by clinton branum

Sly, I have been a huge fan of yours for a number of years. I was there opening night for Rocky Balboa cheering my ass off. Every year I look forward to see what new project you have coming out, but I must say that I have great concern about 'Notorious.' You have been type cast for so many years as the solo hero of a story. I certainly think with the changes in action movies, and movies in general that a reinvention is a great idea. Rocky Balboa showed a tender side of you that we haven't seen in nearly two decades. When it comes to this new project it is so hard for you to be able to pull this off. There is a certain perception of you out there that makes this project almost corny with you in the starring role. The story although absolutely interesting has a specific audience appeal, and I don't think you in a starring role would work. With the utmost respect for your abilities, which all of us here, know you have, this isn't that role. Your role in 'Shade' although small, was impacting. A role as a struggling father, (or a war hero in an upcoming Tarantino pic (I hope!)), to more of a 'Squid and the Whale' type role. Whatever you decide to do, I will be there opening night every time. I am a lifetime fan. Thank you

    Hey Sly..... Rocky Balboa Question...........

    by ronniepooch

I heard that Mr. T was supposed to be in Rocky Balboa. From the interview Mr. T had on Howard Stern... he really sounded like he wanted to be a part of Rocky Balboa, but couldn't work something out due to a scheduling conflict with a reality show he was shooting. Can you tell us what his part was supposed to be (if he were to train you, train with you, or just make a quick congratulatory handshake before the fight at the end?). What Clubber Lange would be doing nowadays? Training other fighters? Would be nice to know how you would have written his character after 25 years. Speaking of cameos, I like how you put your brother in there as one of the guys you were talking to in the restaurant scene. :-) -Ron

With rollercoasters, virtual reality rides through Mighty Mick's and the "stinky" apartment...And a merry go round with the custom painted stallion motorcycles... I know many might think it ridiculous, but I bet the fans would be there... I would go! A little more on this... what do you think? There would be cast lookalikes all over, and maybe you could even Carl a job as an Apollo look a like (ha!) And there would be different sections for each movie and there could be Butkus's running around, and a "Cuff & Link" aquarium ... We could get into the ring and shadowbox a little, have our pictures made, sit it the theater and watch all the movies with an audience of serious fans... Hmmmm

That's not poor editing. It's a classic editing method of showing that no matter how adamant a person is, he or she is no match for true power. There are plenty of similar examples (most of which - naturally - escape me at the moment), for example someone in a film saying "No! I absolutely forbid you to come along! Forget it!" and the next scene showing said person sitting in the car anyway with only the viewer's imagination filling in the details of what must have been an horrific argument. Not everything needs to be spelled out, and some things benefit greatly from such omissions.

Prior to this Q&A and Rocky Balboa's release, I have generally stayed away from Stallone films. I think by the time Rocky IV and Rambo whatever was released, I was pretty much done with his stuff. I did see Cop Land, which I liked and Judge Dredd, which I didn't (this one I may revisit).

Over these past couple of weeks, my interest in Sly's work has since been renewed and I'm asking the Stallone fans out there which films you recommend I seek. Your opinions, please!

Rocky Balboa hits theatres in Poland on March 7!! It will be one hell of a "character tests" for me not to download this movie from Internet till then, especially since I already have US Theatrical Banner hanging proudly on my wall and just want to see this movie so much. But I WILL WAIT, 'cause as Tom Cruise character in Vanilla Sky, I am also a "pleasure delayer". But Mr. Stallone if this movie won't deliver, aghrrr ... btw, saw Rocky 4 yesterday and just wanted to say that the montage of scenes from all the previus 3 parts while rocky driving his car ... I mean it's almost like a video clip put inside a movie, but works beautifuly and to pull something like this, wow! respect! Thanks for the suggestion, Gibson. I should have been more specific in my question. He made a lot of movies in the '90s and based on generalities. by rkdn del sol

I say this not as any kind of insult or joke or slight to the great John Wayne, but I have to make the honest comparison: in his personal life, in his political persuasions, in the quality and content of his movies - this guy lives and breathes The Duke.

And if John Wayne were here to read this, I but you anything he'd agree.

I get what you're saying but this isn't an example of that. What you're describing is a by-now cliched joke that works because the very next shot after the person says "I'm not doing it" is of them doing it. This was not a case of that. This was "You're all fired! I'm outta here!" Then... some scenes later... the fired people are approaching Rocky as if none of that had happened with no explanation. That's bad editing. Yeah, I agree that not everything has to be spelled out, but, again, I don't think this falls into that category. Would it have killed Stallone to take out one of those "You've gotta work from the heart" speeches to advance the plot properly? This movie needed more Mason Dixon and less ooooh pick something. Let's say, Paulie. He was annoying as fuck. I hate seeing movies like this: They try so hard in the wrong direction and ya sit there saying how great it could have been. IT COULDA BEEN A CONTENDER! (Sorry. Geekde out there for a sec.)

    pilotgrl - Here's how I would rank Sly's 90's movies.

    by gibsonusa returns

(Based on my personal preference of the ones I've seen. I have yet to see C-hanger and my friends always get on my case about that.)
    1.) Demolition Man, 2.) Daylight, 3.) Assassins, 4.)The Specialist.
This isn't ranked in order of movie quality, but rather my personal preference and how much I watch each of them. Tango & Cash and Cobra came out in the late 80's are are also pretty good.
I take it by your name that you are female. I don't want to sound like I am generalizing female preferences, but based on my female friends and what they like, I like you'll like Demolition Man & Daylight. Movies like Cobra and The Specialist are more testosterone-based action "Who da man!" movies that I like, but my female friends dont'.

I for one am glad to see RB do so well and shut up all the critics and those who thought you couldn't pull off this film. Some good stuff in there but it got too long and Jeanine Turner's screaming got on my nerves (despite it being just one scene). Gibson, yes, I'm a woman and I don't love the macho chest beating antics that some of Stallone's characters appear to display. Rambo II was just on AMC - I think I liked that one more, actually, although I have a feeling I won't feel the same with the other sequels.

Does Mike Tyson being in the Rocky universe make sense?

    by gibsonusa returns

So can Tyson, being Tyson, co-exist with Rocky? Let me think. So Rocky had his first and second titles in the early 80's right? Then in around 1985 he gave up the belt (to fight Drago). Fictionally, is this where Mike Tyson would then pick up the title belt (in the late 80s)? Tyson-mania was sweeping the nation in the late 80s. Then Tyson lost the title to Buster Douglas in February of 1990. Is this where Union Cane would then pick up the title?
I guess Rocky and Tyson kinda sorta fit together....

Thank you so much for doing this movie and for bringing peace to your character. I actually watched Rocky V after it all and I don't think it was a bad movie at all. It was a bad point in Rocky's life and life is not perfect. The movie showed another aspect to Rocky's life which was not as glamorous as others, and Tommy Gunn needed to be bitch slapped! Stallone's Best Work late 80's/90's

    by forgo10en

    1) Tango & Cash / Cliffhanger
    2) Demolition Man / Assasins
    3) Specialist / Daylight

Love Judge Dredd for the look of it, the whole "I'm the law thing".

Rob Schneider should be chased, tortured and executed by Dredd in the sequel if they ever make one.

    Avoid for any costs:

Avenging Angelo (till this day, why or why Sly!), Driven, Get Carter and D-Tox (actually this one is the best out of these all).

    "What you say, paper champion?!"

    by jack-torrance

"Paper champion." That is fucking witty dialogue, written by Sly. I love the lines he gave Mr T.

"I reject the challenge, cuz Balboa IS no challenge."

"Apollo who? You're talking about that old fool Apollo Creed? Shucks. One hasbeen training another."

"Politics, man. This country wanna keep me down. Keep everybody weak. They don't wanna man like me to have the title cuz I'm, not a puppet like that fool up there."

"Hey Balboa, you punk. You finished, you washed up, you through. I'm the baddest in the world."

"I'm gonna torture him, I'm gonna crucify him, real bad."

"Hey boy, hey boy. After I crucify him, you're next."

"Hey fool. You ready for another beating? You should have never came back."

"I don't need no hasbeen messin up my corner. And you better get that bad look off your face before I knock it off. Come on, you wanna jump, jump. Come on. Come on, Creed."

Vergard, re: ROCKY- THE NEXT GENERATION

    by yack backer

I think there is a temptation to "go there" as Hollywood has done repeatedly. And Sly has shown an affection for sequels over the course of his career. And in a sick way, if they were to do a compelling story (a la Million Dollar Baby) with Rocky as the legit trainer, that would be something I would watch. I love the character. I think the impulse to continue something is natural. But, I also agree that it may be in everyone's best interest not to flog the beast any longer and let Rocky fade into our happy memories. I think that's what Sly wants too, time to move in new directions.

Rocky can live on in videogames and cameos.

    by gibsonusa returns

No sequel please. No HBO series please. Rocky Balboa ended the series on a strong note....so let it be that way. However, Rocky can live on in other forms. A popular way these days is through videogames. The Scarface videogame picks up where the movie left off. Stranglehold for Playstation 3 is the sequel to 1992's Hard Boiled. Videogames can allow people to revisit fictional universes without those universes being dragged through the mud....because the stories are only semi-official. Another way could be through cameos. Imagine in another, totally unrelated movie, two characters are in Philly and happen to dine at Adrians. Little Marie sits them down and very briefly mentions what "her boss" is up to. These kind of hidden cameos could be an in-joke to Rocky fans who can get updates on what Balboa is up to.....without it being a fully blown movie. That's another idea.

Rocky Balboa's 1st competitive milestone comes at $63M

    by gibsonusa returns

...because that's when it will hopefully top Underworld: Evolution and The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. These are the first two relatively known franchise "names" RB will touch, and $63 million will top them.
So far Rocky Balboa's been kicking ass, but the ass being kicked is questionable. The Lake House? Date Movie? After today it will beat The Benchwarmers, that nerd movie. (How did The Benchwarmers make $57 mil????)Reaching $62 million will only put it past Tim Allen's The Shaggy Dog.
So yeah, $63 million is the first real milestone for Rocky Balboa to me. Cause that KO's Underworld and Fast and Furious, two hip new name brands...doing that will make people take notice of Balboa's strength.

As great as it would be to see another excellent Rocky film, Sly said a couple of times in the Q&A that it was time to say good bye to the character. He did like the idea of an illustrated novel but he's got other things to say. It's obvious that when the creative bug bites him, the result is great. I'm really looking forward to the Poe project. After this Q&A experience, the Tupac story has piqued my interest, despite my dislike of gangsta rap, and I will see the Rambo film, if it gets made. Keep on keeping on, Sly. I've got faith we'll be seeing more great films from you.

Hey, how about a SYLVESTER STALLONE.........THEME PARK?

    by gibsonusa returns

Just imagine. They could have a giant a giant full body Sly/Rocky animatronic at the entrance waving, with mouth moving up and down..."Hey YO! Have a knockout time at SlyWorld!"....
Even the parking meters could be Sly heads, with the ticket coming out of his mouth when you push his nose.
The rides would be awesome. They could have "LIPTON WATER SLY'D"....It'd be a super gigantic Rocky head sipping on a straw, which extends into "a cup of Lipton Ice Tea", which is actually the swimming pool. People climb up the back of Rocky's head, come out of his mouth, and jump down into the giant straw sliding into the pool!
They could also have rollercoasters that run down Clubber Lang's mohawk.....the possibilities are endless!
    SlyWorld. The perfect family vacation.(c)

    by beltorak_69

you are right, the good stuff we keep and it is even better homemade. God, i love my moms roesti. But i tell you i would trade a lot of the Hero Roesti to see Rocky Balboa in an American Cinema with an euphoric crowed. Here in Switzeland, the audiance does not realy react a lot to the action on the screen, it is more a "sit and watch", but a movie like Rocky you realy have to see and "feel".

I can't believe Rocky came out before Indiana Jones 4

    by gibsonusa returns

...and Ghostbusters 3. In 1998, as Little Boy Gibson in college, I remember looking up Indy 4 and Ghostbuster 3 all the time. 4th Floor Physics Building computer lab. The computer labs in the libraries and other college buildings were always on the 1st floor jam packed with lines....but who goes into the PHYSICS BUILDING?? And 4th Floor on top of that....pssssh...place was deserted. I remember getting excited at all the Indy 4 and Ghostbusters updates in 98....look at them STILL not be out, yet for some reason the next Rocky's out. o_O

    by jack-torrance

Dan Aykroyd has talked a million times about how he wrote a great third instalment, subtitled Hellbent, but Bill Murray doesn't want to do any more GB films, and they can't do one without him, so the franchise is dead. Indy IV is supposed to start shooting in June but I'll believe it when I see it. That movie's been slated to go before the cameras about a dozen times in the last decade. by gibsonusa returns

Sometimes I don't know how projects get selected. For example, Codename: The Cleaner which just came out cost $20 million to make, and will probably only gross around $10 million domestically total.
Meanwhile, we STILL don't have a SHORT CIRCUIT THREE! Short Circuit 2 made $21 million in 1988 dollars, which is about $36 million today. Take out Cedric the Entertainer, replace with a gold robot, call it Codename: Johnny 5, and I'm there!

    by raymen97

If so, that would be cool.

Rocky has been around my whole life. When bullies picked on me in grade school (Rocky) to changes struggling in college (Rocky 5) to owing my own business (Rocky Balboa), your movies have brought me great inspiration.

There is something to be said about having movies explain to you what your parents and community cannot. But, there is also something to be said about those movies being the Rocky series.

It would have been a good story if I had actually fought those bullies like Rocky would have. I think it is a better story that I have 3 college degrees to show for my restraint.

There is a bit of rocky in all of us.

    Thank you again.

And thanks again- I haven't mentioned this before but I am going back to college full time for the first time in 7 years, starting next week, and your movie has really helped me sort out some of the emotions I have been facing as I go through this process. I didn't do my best when I left- had some personal problems- and to be honest, I have often wondered if I would ever go back. But here I am, and I am ready to take on this new challenge. In a very significant way, you have inspired me to stand toe to toe and say "I am". My only regret is that I didn't mention this sooner, because I seriously doubt you are still reading at this point. In any event, I will let you know how it goes in the next Q&A. Thanks again!

Even D-Tox is fun, it's basically a slasher movie with a big star in the lead. I'm just about the only one in the world who enjoyed Oscar and Judge Dredd. AVOID Stop! Sly Please Push Forward With 'Rambo IV'

    by captainteague

    Sly,

I'm a long-time fan and supporter of your 'Rambo' and 'Rocky' franchises. These days, it seems "franchise" is a dirty word. But that's only because most studios ignore or forget the heart of what made a movie special to begin with. That is not the case with your signature characters, and that is why I always welcome new installments of John and Rocky. The fact is, in these uncertain times, I need to see Rambo score a win for the good guys. I need you to return John Rambo to his underdog, back-against-the-wall glory days. Because no one can peel back the layers of a character and expose the humanity like you can. That said, I'm extremely nervous that the political climate in Thailand might hold up or halt production on 'Rambo IV'. My nightmare goes something like this:
First we'll hear about a "few month delay" in the start of filming. Then you'll be off to film another project while things work themselves out, and before you know it, we'll all stumble into that infamous 'Indy IV' territory. Please don't let this film die. If necessary, scrap the location altogether and head to a more friendly locale. The good old U.S.A. can double for any geographical region imaginable. I love your work, Sly, and I've been wishing for another dose of Rambo since summer 1988. So, in closing, I like to borrow a phrase of yours and say,” Go for it"!

Biggie/Tupac as a segue between Rocky and Rambo?

    by gibsonusa returns

As interesting as the subject matter may be, is it a proper segue between Rocky and Rambo? Shouldn't the in-between movie serve the purpose of promoting Mr. Stallone....giving him additional exposure? I assume he will not play the parts of Tupac or Biggie.
My novice opinion is that Stallone should latch himself onto an existing popular franchise to get himself exposed to the new generation masses. I kind of want him to be in SAW 4.
Stallone in SAW? Hear me out. Saw III made $80 million!, and Saw 4 will look to do the same. It's a hip franchise. Being in Saw means millions of young people watching. Trying to get Stallone re-introduced to these people. Everything between Rocky and Rambo should be to prep the masses to go watch Rambo, right? Well, latch onto a hip young guaranteed $80 million box office franchise and get seen. It doesn't even have to be as the main main character. I think SAW, as unconventional as it may seen, is the perfect segue between Rocky and Rambo. It's mass exposure and cost effective.

Re: Lipton Water Sly'd and Short Circuit III

    by gibsonusa returns

pilotgrl - People would love the water slide. Photo op galore. People would walk out of the mouth and flex and pose. Imagine your kids diving out of Rocky's mouth as you take take a picture. Perfect.
As for Short Circuit III, I've been carrying with me a totally incomplete story for it since I was like 10 years old. Here's the jist of it.
-Johnny 5 is now working in a car assembly plant (Ford/GM whatever), which kind of makes sense. Efficiency is incredible, and he actually lives on campus at the factory....they gave him a room to live in (just imagine what it looks like).
-The girl from Short Circuit 2 is back. Even when I was 8 I thought she was hot, so she's back. I liked that she worked for a toy company (it gave a light, fun feel), so she still works for one. One of the major story points is that she's found no one cares for her as well as Johnny 5, and develops feeling for him. However, Johnny 5, by nature, cannot feel any kind of love beyond friendship. He simply understands no more than that. Therein lies a conflict. (Kind of generic & borrows from T2, but this is a 10 year old's thinking.)
    - The main bad guy will be played by Ed O'Neill. David Faustino will make an appearance. Originally I had them kidnap the girl for some reason, but that's to generic. Again, incomplete.

It's just wonderful! I've gone three times and now cannot wait for the DVD to come.

This is exactly what I am so thankful for my 14 year old son to be watching... along with all the five "Rocky" movies I got for us before he saw "Rocky Balboa"...we love them ALL .... each one is absolutely GREAT. Don't believe any of them weren't just as good.

It's obvious God did help you write this story through the years about this man who lives through the example of Christ. And you portray him so specially. Your face shows Him even if you don't realize it. He made YOU so special!! Thank you for allowing him to use you this way.

The new version out recently of "Rocky" is soooo neat with all your commentary plus all the other special parts. You're fun! A+ on that one. Please do the same for Rocky II, III, IV and V...my 14 yr old Joey really wants them...k? thanks

Keep on going Sylvester... hope to meet you some day and get the theater poster they gave me last night (after my third viewing of "Rocky Balboa") autographed...but either way...see you at His table! Take care.

I missed the Qnd A just signed up and would like to ask

    by rocky4prez

Thank you for bringing Rocky to our lives, you are truly inspirational and have been a huge part of my life as a role model, so i say thank you. Anyway here are a couple of questions
    1. Why didn't Duke help Rocky in no.5 financially or even as a friend being supportive.
    2. Do you still have a beef with Carl Weathers? How did that come about and has it quelled at all, and are you guys friends?
    3. Do you still keep in touch with cast members from the Rocky movies like Mr.t, Dolph, Burt, and Tony etc.? (Carl too but im sure when you answer 2 i'll know

    Thanx You are the man!!!

    Rocky is a real hero

    by darkocean

You know I hadn't seen Rocky in years until I saw it on cable. I had almost forgot that it is truely one of the greatest movies ever. Now most of our heros are anti-hero's, dark, reluctant, and not so shiny. I don't know why but I love the hero archtype as it was portrayed in the 80's and before. Some of the character's like Rocky were really good decent guys. I mean like real hero's you could look up to. Guys that were more noble than the anti-hero. People you could aspire to and hope you could make the right desicion like them when they time came. Hero's like Rocky are ones that you could look up to as the highest ideal of what it means to be a good person, a good husband, a good friend, and a good father. I see no hero's now that you can really look up to like you could with Rocky. Maybe it's why the world seems like its getting worse and worse. There's no one to aspire to be. When you see a great guy, a great character who becomes your hero, it makes you a better person. You want to be just like them and look to them as example for how to act in the world. I hope everyone realizes the value of Rocky and watches it with their children so that a legacy may live on and inspire us all to greater things and to be better people.
