More non-news from Lucas about INDY 4!!

Published at:  Dec 30, 2006 3:38:28 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I know, I know. We got this news a day and a half ago, but didn't post it. Why? I don't consider it news... well, let me rephrase that. I'd consider it news if, for the past three years, Lucas hadn't said this exact same thing. It's always "Indiana Jones 4 is going into production next year."

Now, I hope this time George Lucas is right on the money and that Harrison Ford, Spielberg and Lucas have finally found the right script they all love and they get going. I'm in the camp that believes a fourth installment could be great. I know we're all a bit gunshy with our childhood heroes revisiting our childhood favorites... with good reason, but if they find a story that has the trademark Indiana Jones action, but also a focus on Indiana as a character, then I'm all for it. It could be a great bookend, if they go with something that mirrors RAIDERS. If they don't address Indy's age, then it'll be laughable.

After watching MUNICH, I know Spielberg can channel that '70s and early '80s Spielberg if he sets his mind on it, so I'm not worried about him. And I want Ford to be cool again. Lucas, too.

Plus, I just want to see Marion. My fingers are crossed that they end up together. It's clear to any fan of the series that Marion is Indy's perfect partner and it's only right that the series ends with them together.

I guess the only way Indiana Jones 4 works for me is a little like what Stallone did with ROCKY BALBOA. It acknowledged the main character's entire journey, but in style and story it followed the first, and best, film of the series. The most ideal Indiana Jones 4 for me is a companion piece to RAIDERS.

So, thanks to the constant barrage of emails, the story is going up. I won't believe it until Paramount announces they've greenlit the film and set the date themselves. Even if Lucas is 100% on the money, there are so many things that can snag the production, as we've seen in the past. If Lucas is right and nothing pops up, INDIANA JONES 4 goes into production next year, for a 2008 release.

This write up is a bit disappointing ...

    by alliejamison

right. anything can happen to any movie at any time of its production and cause trouble. but i wouldn't consider this non-news. We've heard the "shooting is going to start next year" phrase a lot now. But we've never heard anything about a finished script. This is the farest they got. Mostly the scripts needed to be rewritten or got rejected. I consider it a basic knowledge for anyone who's reading and writing about filmmaking and the industry (=people who read this site) to think about a film production as a risky effort. A, it is art and B there are a lot of people involved in it. Two risky points. "There are many things that can snag the production" ...so pretty much on this site in non-news. because the possibility that a film I read about here is going to either suck or not going to be finished within the next 3 years. The script is "finalized"... I've never heard that before. And still, I'm not sure if maybe actors who still are going to be assigned to the project will demand some changes. You never know. But this isn't a reason to tune the news down like that. Jesus. There are people who wanna share some joy and giddiness. Not everybody here is over 30 and an Indy anticipation routinee. My longest wait for a new indy flick (before this one)lasted five days. Because that was the time span between the network airings. I like this news and gotta agree with Quints remarks on the plot.

If Rocky can do it, so can Indy

    by darth voodoo

Stallone pulled off a 60 year old boxer in grand fashion. There is no reason why Spielberg,Lucas + Ford can't do the same for an equally legendary character that does not have to box a man old enough to be his son. Life does not end at 30. Go Rocky, Go Indy.....

plus your article could be more reasonable. While I acknowledge your wishes for the plot and agree with them, Quint, as the major informer in this little communication, you could add that Spielberg and others have stated that Indy's age is absolutely going to be an issue. While this may be as definite as Lucas articulating how "really cool" indy is going to be and defining it as a character piece (what does that mean in Lucas speak?) it's still showing an effort and recognition on their side. A little recounting of the whole indy IV development held against your own expectations and fears wouldn't be too bad. I don't want to behave like a fucking Browncoat or something, though....:) ---I'm actually glad to have a fansite writer who's rather on the supporting side...it's kind of comforting...but then do some better write ups, Quint.

If the scripts is finalized, this IS significant

    by enrique_o_k2000

While of course I'm on the "belive it when I see it" train, the script was the one big hurdle that was holding this up for the last seven years or so. It was always, "Yes, we all want to do it, we just have to fine-tune the script etc." That the script is finally done is a HUGE step forward in this being realized, not to mention that there's a pretty specific time of release (May 2008).

I didn't hold off on posting because something "may" happen to the project, just that Lucas has had scripts ready before and has said the exact same thing. We have articles dated 2003 where Spielberg and Lucas say it's filming "next summer."My worries about Indy 4 not taking into account Indy's age are very founded. The word around the industry is that was the aspect of Darabont's script that Lucas didn't like. I wouldn't know for sure as I haven't talked to anybody directly associated with it and I have not been able to track down a copy to read, but my sources are solid. That doesn't mean we'll get 60 year old action adventure without a moment to focus on how Indy is dealing with his age with whatever goes forward on Indy 4, but it is a valid worry.

    by theseeker7

That is, the power of three, when it came to Indy 4... If they REALLY wanted to shoot this movie, I mean, as bad as they apparently have claimed to all of these years, well then I have to believe then that they really COULD have, but nooooooo. One thing after another, one or all of them would CONSTANTLY let something(s) else clutter up their schedules that kept having to make them collectively put it on the backburner. I just always found it a bit disingenuous as a fan. It's like, please, you three are some of the most powerful fucking people in the entire industry, if you all got together and TRULY wanted the thing made, it simply WOULD HAVE BEEN, however long ago. But I think the fact that they kept letting it NOT happen is somewhat telling.

    by misnomer

although the whole darabont thing still has me uneasy. I heard it was Act 3 that Lucas wasn't happy with, and if that DOES deal with the age thing, then I am a little anxious. Plus Koepp is a little middle-of-the-road for my liking and rarely reaches greatness.
but then again...he just put the finishing touches to this script apparently. Lucas' comments on a "younger sidekick" still have me a little concerned.

But the simple fact is that it is set in the late 1940's and centers around an entirely new and supposedly "controversial" macguffin.
I'm excited - the script is done -koepp closed the script and all three parties are in agreement. As far as I've been following the script has been the major hurdle for the last 4 years at least. so this IS news. Plus a "character-piece" is totally where this new movie has to go...as much as I love Raiders, and enjoy the other two...I think audiences will expect the humour of The Last Crusade, and Raiders is pretty um..."succinct" when it comes to characterisation....I'm hoping Indy 4 deals with his age in a meaningful way...this could be a powerful movie.

And to be perfectly honest, unless they show Indy with Karen Allen's character and completing the romance, then this entire story is just one big pointless piece of mid-life crisis. We already got a really great goodbye with Indy and co. riding off into the sunset--what more goodbye do you need? No, unless Allen is in this thing, you can pretty much count out any good feelings I have towards the production of this film. I aint saying I won't watch it, but I will scoff at any sort of attempt at calling Indy 4 neccessary to the character and story.

to celebrate Raiders 25th anniversary and as I recall, Indy 4 had some relgious angle to it. I think it was something to do with a thorn with a piece of Chirsts flesh and some one is after that. Indy is called out of retirement and along the way he is re-united with his old man but in the end he Marries Marion and hangs up his hat and whip permanently. Then Darabont came out and said he had some idea which the berg like and ford liked but Lucas said no. Darabont is adamant he will never work with Lucas again.

    Quint,Lucas greenlights & finances Indy 4,not Paramount

    by greg7007

Quint, Lucas doesn't need Paramount anymore to greenlight and finance an Indy 4 film, because his 20 year deal with Paramount financing Indy films expired in 2001, meaning any Indy sequel made now, is one Lucas can finance all himself. It's just as well ; with Lucas having to give Spielberg and Ford backend deals on such a film to cut down the film's budget, if Paramount financed an Indy 4, the film would be financially unviable to them. It would've been much cooler if 2 or 3 Indy films were made back to back, similar to POTC 2 & 3. All Paramount will do, is distribute Indy 4 and get the breadcrumbs of a distribution fee.

I find it almost impossible to beleive he doesn't have a bunch of outlines written somewhere, from way back when, that would be worth making something out of. IMMORTALITY & LUCAS

    by doublefantasy

There's just one thing that i think audiences should be reminded of in a possible Indy VI and that is that both Indiana and his father are immortal. They drank from the holy grail so even though im sure they can be killed - their lifespan has been dramatically enhanced - therefore on a technical note harrison ford could play indy in the modern world looking the way he is now. Indy IV COULD realistically be set in the 21st century although i think their is no chance of this at all. It'll be set in the 1950's. And yknow what I think seeing Indy as an old guy would rock - what u think that you can only have a story about you if you are under 50? His age gives them a million more character possibilities and as was said yes they should reference his age no mater what.

Also as far as Lucas haters go I read that someone said that Lucas fucked up the prequels because of stuff like "Vader moaning about Padme" and such. Sorry to rain on your parade but Vader asking for Padme is one of the most emotional lines of the enitre saga. Everyone's quite happy to slag Lucas for the Phantom meance and Clones but for god sake Revenge of the Sith was probably an almost perfect Star Wars film. Maybe not for everyone but it had all the right ingredients. i could never have imagined seeing Anakin burned so brutally, kids about to be massacred and yoda fighting the emperor etc when i was a kid. Revenge of the Sith is a Star wars masterpiece and the only person to thank for that is George Lucas. I truly think the man knows how to direct a film - its just that he does it his way - some may call that laziness but Star Wars has never been Hamlet - Lucas said in 1994 in an interview that TPM was going to be tonally so different that he didnt expect it to be liked. But ROTS showed that he does have the ability to convey emotion. Jesus I cried more than once at ROTS - but maybe thats because I see it for what it is and let my imagination fill in the blanks. Isn't what movies are for - to stimulate our imagination?

On here it seems like you need everything perfect or it's god-awful. Optimus prime has flames - WOW. What difference does that make? know what i mean?

Ok no more ranting. Hope u all have a nice new year folks.

Try to stop bitching and be positive.

    Love
    xxx

Loved it. I thought Stallone did a great job of working Rocky's age into the story in a way that was believable. My only gripe with the movie is that it was too much like the original (it has essentially the same ending) but you gotta love Rocky going out on his own terms in his own way.

    Two things I don't get...

    by sledge hammer

One, why people keep bitching about the fact that they've taken so long to get a script that all three parties are actually happy with, and two, the whole Ford is too old bollocks. So what, you'd prefer they'd have rushed a shitty sequel out as soon as all three agreed to do an Indy 4? Sure, this doesn't guarantee that they'll get it right, but it does show that they're at least trying to, so there's hope. And as for him being too old, why does every film hero have to be fucking young these days? Why can't we have some older, experienced ass kicking heroes with their requisite baggage and rougher or worn edges? You know, the kind of traits that make them *more* interesting, not less. What the fuck is wrong with that exactly? If Eastwood, Connery, McQueen, Bronson, Brynner and Coburn can play hard men of action well into the latter years of their lives, why can't Ford? I mean it's not like he looks like William Shatner trying to squeeze into his starfleet uniform one last time, just as long as he's in shape and looks the part I say go for it. I sincerely hope that if this gets made (and it's always going to be an if until cameras start rolling) that they manage to give us one final great Indy adventure, because as a film fan and an Indy fan, I'd love nothing more. Indiana Jones & The Haters Who Can All Go Fuck Themselves...

Think about the character. Do you think Indy would ever be a "stay in the lecture hall kind of guy"? No. I see him getting his ass kicked in a few fights...a little less swinging from whips...and a lot of "I'm too old for this" lines in the next movie...but Indy would never be the type to sit on his ass. As a matter of fact, Ford wanted to kill Han Solo off so damn bad, I suspect he may have the same desire for Indy. I saw ET the other day, the new squeaky clean version where spielberg took out the guns. Ever since Schindler's list, spielberg has been for want of a better word off Form. Before Schindler, the berg was possibly the best family filmmaker of our generation. our generation refers to people who our now in their thirties, like me. His first five films are all classics, Sugarland Express, Duel, Jaws, Close Encounter(which I think is his Masterpiece) ET, and the color purple. Are rightly regarded as some of the most commercially successful films of all time. LOst world was I believe a turning point. It had one of the worst endings to a film I have ever. The young spielberg would have had the T-rex eat the dog but the older spielberg decides not too. You dont say no to the berg, becuase if we had made that film the scene with T-rex in the backyard would have been cut. The older he gets the more serious he becomes, his new films are much colder and are in my opinion less enjoyable. I loved the opening in of Munich but thought the rest of the movie was confused. Like lucas, the berg has lost the passion he once had as a filmmaker. He is writing his memoirs presently expect the chapter on Dreamowrks to very short or Blank. I know someone who works in the SEC and in a very senior position, i wont say anymore but Dreamworks was a shambles.

    Biblical superweapons

    by superninja

The Ark was really the only one with any kind of dramatic weight. The grail was weaker (as would be the spear) because they are not connected so strongly to the Old Testament wrath of God, but rather to Christ, and are more about devious machinations of men than fear of God. Which is interesting because Jesus and God are the same being, but Hollywood likes to treat Jesus like a hippie guru. I just think Atlantis and UFOs will never have the same power as the Ark in Raiders, which was handled in such an incredible way and is one of the greatest films ever made. Especially UFOs which are more about science than mysticism and the last thing we need from these filmmakers is their attempt at a sci-fi Indy. If they want to do another Biblically themed Indy, go back to the Old Testament: the Tower of Babel, the Garden of Eden, the Nephilim, the mark of Cain, something along those lines.

    The Prize, Time, Setting, Director

    by pabodie

    A) Doesn't need to be Biblical (Ark and Grail eclipse all other Biblical artifacts and they're taken, and the big finale has to be bigger). B) Cannot be obscure. The Shankara Stones kind of forced the rest of ToD to be about laffs and grossouts because... Wait a sec what was I talking about? C) Immortal Indy is just silly. Not in a Banana Splits way, either. D) Anyway the Prize needs to be transcendent, frightening, something whose existence could change the world--but, E) this means the story needs to be contemporary, because if it takes place in the past, we know the world did NOT change and therefore the suspension of disbelief required would be too great and we end up with another Sky Captain (blecch). So, F) we are talking a contemporary story, but that make Indy a centenarian, unless... The story is told in two different times. One timeline with Indy as an aging archeologist on the trail of what has become his life's work. His Grail. And one where a descendent of his sets out to complete the quest that killed Indy. Indy's story takes place in the 1950's Iraq, and is the story of an aging hero who pushes himself to uncover something until a final sacrifice is needed to hide the shattering truth (twist). The modern story is set in Iraq, too, and includes allusions to the looting of Baghdad and a web of accomplices and enemies that shift with the desert wind... Yeah, I don't know what the prize will be. Maybe related to the Baghdad Battery? Maybe proof of a prehistoric super-civilization and it's ties to keeping the world from ending? Directors at the top of the list = Spielberg, Spielberg, and Spielberg. I want to go into that theater knowing I am still in the same Jones family as always.

And people here saying this shouldn't be directed by Spielberg? Freakin DIAF already. James Cameron is my favorite director of all time, but his slate is packed. Let Steven do his thing.

    by runfoodrun

He may not be in classic 70/80's form, but CMIYC, WOTW (suck it haters), Munich, even Terminal show a filmmaker who is making unique, if not brilliant films, this isn't the SS who made Jaws, Close encounters or ET, but this a director who is more mature and bringing amazing stories to life. Imagine an Indy with the intense realism or Munich. Bring it.

    by darthdooku

Haha, George Lucas is so funny! If GL and Spielberg put their minds to it, i think they can definitely pull off a winner. Stallone showed that you can successfully bring back an old character, with the same actor, and make a great movie. The same can be done, although i have to say, that ending with the four riding into the sunset.... can you seriously beat that ending to the story?

    by one9deuce

For anyone posting what they think would be good for the next Indiana Jones plot/enemies/character arcs/new sidekick/mcguffin or anything else. Every idea I've read is horrifyingly bad. Especially yours Pabodie. You didn't even describe an Indiana Jones type movie. Of course, you can all be forgiven since the holy trinity themselves didn't even make an Indiana Jones movie for the third installment. And we all know that George Lucas is nothing but a hollowed out shell of the brilliant director he was in the 70's, but he is taking it to a new level of insanity if he thinks that Indiana Jones IV will be better than Raiders of the Lost Ark.

C&D? Taking a cue from NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM $$$ score at the box office the new INDY will now be head of the Museum where all the great treasures he has collected over the years are stored. Each night Indy walks the halls where he will have flashbacks to the time he recovered each item. The Flashbacks will be whole scenes from the first 3 INDY films redone in 3-D ( a small red whip icon will appear on-screen letting you know to put on your special RAIDERS 4-D Glasses) Later in the film Indy and his Father decide to steal the Ark back from the government which leads up to a really cool scene where his father ask Indy to tell him the story of finding the ark and we get to see all the old footage from the first movie in 3-D...for all the bitchin’ Lucas gets just think what Roger Corman would do sitting on the same footage LOL.

What will hold this up more than anything else is a great script. And THAT snowball will lead to other problems... and time is not the friend of this legendary trio. Sure, I'd LOVE to see a great finale. But if they just mail it in, then it's not worth anyone's time. GIVE US SOMETHING GREAT... and don't corner yourself as if you need to repeat a previous Indy flick. If all three individuals can't agree on something to get excited and enthusiastic about, then they should all move on with their lives. (And we can move our attention to something more worthy, here at AICN.)

    Indiana Jones: Reboot

    by spandau belly

I don't have a problem with another Indy flick, but the original three were standalone installments. Making some movie about old Indy is crappy. I'd be fine if they put Christian Bale or somebody in the Indy role and just did like they do with the Bond flicks: carry on like nothing's happened!

REBOOT! God love Harrison Ford & Karen Allen...but c'mon, folks...this is just asking for trouble. Who is the target audience here? So...does the film open at the funeral of Indy's dad...and Marion shows up to pay her respects and whoosh the adventure begins? I dunno. Just having trouble seeing Ford and Allen running away from an exploding Nazi plane on a desert tarmac at this stage in their lives. I say, give the stunt crew (who will ultimately be doing most of the heavy lifting here) a rest...Give Lost's Josh Halloway a haircut and a fedora...a nasty scar on his chin...and a bull whip...throw a white dress and one shoe on Rachel McAdams...and let the kids go have some fun. Or...will Lucas make this Geritol set wrap up for old time(rs) sake...and not get around to a kick ass reboot until 2012? btw Indiana Jones and the Fart of Dust was, by far, the best mock title. Ever.

Don't count Lucas out yet. Sith could be the glimmer of a comeback. You gotta believe. That's what it's all about. Anyway, you gotta want to speculate a little. It's fun. Give a try. I'd like to see what you come up with. Also I like the reboot idea getting kicked around here as a way to circumvent the Harrison Ford problem, but I'm not sure about Sawyer as Indy. I still hate your idea though, LOL. Although saying that Revenge of the Sith is a glimmer of hope says that you aren't very hard to please. Episode III is the worst of the three horrible prequels to the Star Wars Trilogy. And as far as speculating on the next Indiana Jones, yes that can be fun. But I'll keep what I would do with the series off these talkbacks. I don't have the courage you do apparently. All I know is that I couldn't do worse than Last Crusade. Lucas hasn't had a good installment of either of his two franchises since 1984, much less a great one. All signs point to a mediocre Indiana Jones 4. Of course, I'll be there at midnight on opening night.

    C'mon Bobo...

    by cheif brody

I have tons of respect for actors over 30. I was happy to see Rock climb back into the ring again...ONE LAST TIME. I'm even a lil jazzed about seein' my boy John McClane again in LFODH. It's just...well...this is Indy, dammit!! Part of the fun of watching ROTLA was knowing that Harrison was actually dragging behind that truck much of the time. There's no way he could do that again...not now. So we're gonna get a lot of wide shots of a stunt guy instead. I know the 3 main dudes getting back together makes it special...but it may also make it...well...just kinda average. I'm just saying, whether Indy IV gets made or not...there will be a reboot eventually...the character is just to much fun to die...and Harrison will simply be too old for another go round. I say pull the Casino Royale approach now and let somebody younger drag behind the truck for a while. As for Sawyer being too shady...confusing the actor with the character? Last I checked...Indy shot a guy with a sword...just cuz he was tired of fighting. That shady moment was the biggest laugh in the movie. I think Halloway could def pull it off.

Once they actually go into production we will FINALLY know what the film is going to be about. First film: Judaism, Second film: Hinduism, Third film: Christianity. Mythology would make the most sense for the fourth film. Excalibur, Atlantis, Fountain of Youth etc... Many interesting story elements could be used from mythology. But I just want to know what they have planned, I'm tired of waiting! Best case scenario: Indiana Jones and the ------- of ---- is released in May of 2008, nineteen YEARS after Last Crusade.

Are you referring to The Phantom Menace? If so, I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, it's merely by far the best of the very underwhelming Prequel Trilogy. I would call it a spectacular failure. It has the right elements to be an all-time classic, but he just didn't put them together correctly. The analogy I always think of is a state of the art kitchen with all the finest ingredients, but a chef who doesn't quite know how to make them into a piece de resistance. Three fairly minor changes to the screenplay would have made a HUGE difference in how Episode 1 played to audiences. If you weren't referring to The Phantom Menace, just disregard the above paragraph!

I don't think so either. I know so. And I'll be more than glad to say "I told you so". You mention elements that make Episode 1 worse than it should be, no argument there. But Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith have NO redeeming elements. A shit element in those films doesn't bring them down, they're already there. Like putting a door-ding in a piece of shit car. Who cares? But The Phantom Menace has a LOT going for it, it's just unfortunate that it has some things that keep it from being what it could, and should, have been.

they fell short of what they should have been. one9deuce, I was being slightly sarcastic when I say TPM was a masterpiece. It was a trainwreck, like all of them. I will say it felt more like a "Star Wars" movie, but it wasn't by any means good. Jar Jar alone dictates it belongs in purgatory. AOTC had some interesting scenes in it (Fett and Obi-Wan, big battle) but that impaled itself with being a bloated piece of crap. The third one was almost there, but the reasons for Anakin turning were weak. It was just missing that Star Wars wonder and humor. Ah well.
