The 12 episode series features the anime incarnation of the cult Playstation strategy role playing game from the writer and studio that adapted the popular medieval warfare drama Berserk (Atsuhiro Tomioka and Oriental Light and Magic).

The irreverent quest opens when the demon Laharl is woken up by his vassal Etna to be informed that during his two years of sleep his father, the king of the Netherworld, died. Laharl's campaign to cement his position as the new Overlord is soon joined by a second companion, the angel Flonne who had been sent (too late) to the Netherworld to assassinate Laharl's father.

With human souls stuffed into franken-penguins, gamer humor such as an antagonist dubbed 'Mid Boss', and its strange take on the divide between good and evil, the Disgaea looks like a particularly offbeat fantasy anime.
