Published at:  Dec 22, 2006 10:19:59 PM CST

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

One of our chatters, MUMBLES, just posted a link to the first trailer for THE KINGDOM, a Peter Berg-directed thriller set on an Army base in Saudi Arabia. Michael Mann’s producing, and the script is by current hot-shit screenwriter Matthew Carnahan, who also wrote STATE OF PLAY, another hot-button political thriller. Jamie Foxx, Chris Cooper, and Jennifer Garner are the stars.

Take a look!!

Lord help me, the cinemas do not need yet ANOTHER director who abuses handheld camerawork. ---- Berg is one of the worst filmmakers out there today. I wish he would've stuck with acting.

This Will End Up Being a Joke

    by mr. winston

For one reason, and one reason only: Foxx, in the title role of Fleury, is going to bomb. The script was as good as any I read last year but Foxx is going to bury it. No one will respect him with this role in this story. It's a damn shame.

That said, Bateman and Cooper's roles are a good time and the story rocks - complicated and intricate without ever being confusing or hard to follow. A lot - a LOT - of people are going to be disappointed with this one. And they'll all be saying the same thing: "Why didn't they case Denzel instead?"

    Rob Zombie is quickly becoming...

    by scrivener

the greatest horror filmaker of our time. House of 1000 Corpses was a valiant first effort - disgusting, uncomfortable, stylish (but where is out unrated directors cut goddammit!?). Devils Rejects was absolutely fantastic - more down to earth, more believable, and generally more effective than House. I can't wait to see what he does with Halloween which, admittedly, is one of my least favorite horror franchises.

Not ABC, smutpeddlar. They did give it 2 1/2 seasons, 2 more than most networks would. Will we ever see Ron Howard's big screen version?

Didn't Paul Abbott write State of Play?...

    by schnorbitz

...is what I thought, then 30 seconds on imdb saw me right. Abbott wrote the excellent British series, and Michael Matthew Carnahan is adapting for the big screen version. Abbott is reportedly very happy with it. The Kingdom looks great though - action, but with a real mystery-thriller element. Sort of like a very big budget version of Spooks (aka MI5) set in Saudi Arabia.

    Shot in Phoenix....

    by quake ii

They shot most of the "Middle East" stuff in Phoenix (Mesa to be precise) over the summer. Personally, I am sick of anything to do with terrorists, the Middle East or politics right now. Maybe a rental. Maybe.

Read the screenplay before you start flapping gums. It's not a Jamie Foxx part. It calls for someone with a more mature and imposing swing to play the part. For me, it's another case of marketing calling the shots...and it's likely going to amount to a failure.

after watching the trailer...the highway chase scenes seem fake now, (of course they are in reality anyways), but knowing where it was shot and knowing what's around that area, the magic in the scenes don't work for me. I'll still watch of course...but when the highway parts come up all I'm gonna be thinking of is the Super Wal-Mart and Super Target just above on the surface streets. I just can't shake it :(

    Where is BAUER?!

    by maxcalifornia.

What were the FBI thinking? Sidney Bristow and Michael Bluth ain't gonna cut it - send in Jack Bauer and he'd have this case closed in ten minutes. As soon as that guy says "You are only allowed to do what I tell you", Bauer would punch him in the throat, hold a knife to his eye, shoot him in the leg, and then he'd get an instant confession. Bauer cares not for geopolitics and protocol!

    by cobbio

I liked the look of this trailer. Yes, it's another film set in the Middle East, and yes, it involves high level geopolitics and terrorism. But I liked the look of its characters and action sequences.
I enjoyed Berg's "Friday Night Lights," so I know he can direct. This looks like a step up from the low-budget films he's directed in the past, so I hope he maintained his commitment to quality.
Others here wrote that Jamie Foxx isn't right for the lead part -- this may be so, but the trailer definitely grabbed my attention. I love me some Middle Eastern US military drama. The more the better, I say.

    Jennifer Garner

    by retroactive

is overrated. The whole so cute, she's tough...so tough she's cute thing...played. Plus, she married Ben Affleck. He's worth two strikes all by himself. So, game over. No disrespect to those on her bandwagon...she just rubs me the wrong way.

    by anton_sirius

Yeah, CSI: Riyadh seems about right. Why anyone would be bitching about Foxx though, when Garner is so glaringly the weak link in that cast, is beyond me. What, Jorja Fox was unavailable? She would have been cheaper, and they're basically clones anyway.

    by flanagan

When I saw the "Rundown" way back when I was happy to see Peter Berg was directing. Actually I wasn't sure it was Peter Berg the actor. Peter is a pretty good actor and he'll probably be more successful as a director. Whether we like it or not, hand held camera work is here to stay. If you were a shooter, you'd understand this.

Why are they chasing Abu Hamza?

    by harker-writes

Hamza is a real guy. He's in prison in the UK. And he's a total clown rather than some Bond style villain. Is this supposed to be a true story or more Hollywood garbage that might be heading for a libel suit?

It amazes me that geniuses like you can complain about and comment on something you haven't seen and know nothing about. In fact, this is a pretty even-handed account of the US occupation in the Middle East and the Muslim reaction to our presence, taking care to point out that we're not exactly righteous. I would go so far as to say, as a matter of fact, that it doesn't take a side in the issue.

Whatever happened to waiting until AFTER you've seen the movie to run your mouth and show us what an idiot you can be?
