Learn Which Major Comic-Book Writer Has Joined The Staff of LOST!!

Published at:  Dec 20, 2006 9:44:55 PM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Brian K. Vaughn – the funnybook scribe who’s written everything from “Ultimate X-Men” to “Runaways” to “Tom Strong” to “JLA” to “Wonder Woman” to the upcoming “eighth season” of “Buffy The Vampire Slayer,” has hired on to help guide the adventures of Locke, Hurley, Juliet et al. As Vaughn himself explains:

I've been hired as an Executive Story Editor by the fantastic television show LOST. As I'm neither an executive nor an editor, this is really just a fancy Hollywood way of saying that I've joined the writing staff.

    Ah, the tap-dance...

    by nodwick

...has a new partner. Unfortunately, comic books aren't known for bringing closure to things, either, so while I'm sure I'll stick around to see where "Lost" will go, I don't expect to see much resolution to any plotlines anytime soon.

    closure

    by fakeplasticguava

ahh, closure. proof of vaughn's ability to end stories well include the recent Pride of Baghdad, and these final issues of Y. I think by the time it ends with issue 60 I'll be satisfied. also, runaways was going to have a great end until joss whedon asked him to keep going. to see the original planned arch, read vol. 1.

It seems to me that Lost already has enough expertise at turning maybe one season of great material into 5 or 6 seasons of terrible material. :)

Eighth Season of Buffy? Are you fucking kidding me?

    by flim_

Didn't they drive a stake through that piece of shit show like twenty-twelve years ago? Well, at least I can console myself in the fact that the Taster's Choice guy is getting work.Incidentally, the news that people actually write LOST is especially shocking to me, since it seems like they've been writing this season with a box of twelve crayons, ten of which are broken. My faith in the show runs pretty deep, but we're quickly reaching bottom here, folks.

I love Brian K. Vaughn and Lost. And FUCK anyone who says "dragging out plots" about Vaughn. I love Y-The Last Man. I didn't want it to be 6 issues. I enjoy reading it. Hopefully he can help make Lost what it once was, or at least more enjoyable.

This is fucking BRILLIANT news and will only improve an already excellent show, mark my words. Y: THE LAST MAN is such a great comic series (especially the dialogue) and the story line is handled expertly, with revelations and twists occurring in almost every issue. I actually recently adapted the first issue of Y: THE LAST MAN into a pilot for an hour-long TV show as a project for varsity. The comic is written and paced like a TV show itself, so adaption wasn't that difficult at all. This news made my day.

    About Buffy Season 8...

    by carmillavondoom

...it is an upcoming monthly comic, where each issue is a pretend 'episode' of what 'happened' after Buffy Season 7. My ' ' marks are mainly because I am not sure if this will end up being canon.

    You must temper your enthusiasm....

    by stereochad

...with the knowledge that the team of writers who are already in place, & who are most likely pretty territorial (most are), & who probably feel that there is nothing wrong with the way in which they have been writing the show as of late (Hello, does anyone even bother to throw in the occasional scene where upon walking up to a set a castaways we hear them talking about the fact that they still can't believe that just the other day they saw a polar bear or A FUCKING SMOKE MONSTER!?!?)

Yeah, I can hear it now, "okay, sure comic boy, we'll make sure to throw in more witty pop culture references while we figure out some new twists to add to each episode. This will diffuse the fact that we really don't have a clear path as to how to direct this story any longer".

    There, I'm bitter now.

    Herc didn't mention

    by rinse

"Y: The Last Man" and "Ex Machina", both excellent reasons why this is probably a good thing for the show. After reading ~50 issues of "Y", I didn't think he'd be able to sell the male extinction w/ any satisfying explanation -- but he did! What a fantastic series. On a related note, when I saw the trailer for "Children Of Men", I was immediately reminded of "Y".. And from what I've read, "Children Of Men" doesn't even attempt to provide an explanation for its premise. So, kudos, Brian K. Vaughn..

    by imageburn13

I love the show, but lately, its like a non-stop mugfest of sawyer shot so bloody close we can see his nosehairs. Everyone else is shot from pretty average distance. On topic, yes, hopefully this guy interjects some comic book-type-heady-conceptual style-adventure into the whole shmaltzfest the "others" have been lately. I say, go biological. Moreso.

great news, and yeah, it'll be canon

    by oisin5199

With the Buffy comics, if Joss writes it, it will be canon. And he said that the whole point of doing it was so they could add to the canon. Besides, from Runaways alone, this guy (Vaughn) knows how to write good ensemble work. Now if only he and Joss could collaborate on a Runaways live action series...

Great! More 80s pop culture references on Lost! Whoooo!

    by tallboy66

Just kidding. Maybe. His second issue of "Mysitque" did have the line when she's cornered by the fuzz, sheepishly saying, "is this for all those songs I downloaded illegally on Kazaa?" Sadly, only a handful more issues of Y: The Last Man left, and only 2 more issues of Runaways! Yeesh. Ah well, even though I'll miss both those books like a limb, I think my jaw is gonna hit the floor pretty hard when I see a Lost episode with "written by Brian K. Vaughn". Here's hoping he gets a good 'un like a Locke or a Sawyer or Desmond episode. I'd hate to see his first writing effort be wasted on "Bernard and Rose Prt. II"

    by nemesisdarkside

How can you forget those? Y The Last Man had me hooked from the "Unmanned" collection. I LOOOVE it!brokentus, I definately agree. While reading Y for the 1st time, it played out like a TV show in my mind. The whole flow and structure remind me of a primetime serial show. I even imagine voices to each of the characters when I read. ;D I'd love to see an HBO or Showtime series! This is good news indeed! How do comic book writers script multiple comics at the same time, as well as write scripts for primetime shows amongst other things? Don't these guys spread themselves thin?

    Excited about Vaughan

    by bluetoast

The eight season of Buffy thing just refers to him writing a few issues of the new comic series that Whedon is writing.

Now considering that I have an Excel spreadsheet calculating my % of Vaughan books owned (84% so far), I will be getting the DVDs of Season 1 and 2 soon, and start to watch this show.
