MADMAN finally moves forward at Dimension, but Rodriguez isn't directing anymore...

Published at:  Dec 19, 2006 3:27:27 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Robert Rodriguez has been wanting to make a MADMAN movie (based on Mike Allred's comic book) for years. It looks like he's finally going into production with it now, but will serve only as producer. He's bringing in long time friend George Huang to direct while he is prepping SIN CITY 2.

I met Huang on the set of THE FACULTY where he was given the task to handle the onset writing emergencies. He had to work with Kevin Williamson's script, of course, but he did what he could.

The best thing Huang has done, in my mind, is SWIMMING WITH SHARKS, which he wrote and directed. That flick is a great cautionary tale about working within the Hollywood system and one of Kevin Spacey's first brilliant performances to make its way to the masses.

MADMAN is going to be shot the same way Rodriguez shot SIN CITY, here in Austin using Troublemaker Studios' set up.

Mike Allred is said to have much input in the feature, maybe as much as getting a co-director credit like Frank Miller did on SIN CITY.

    George Huang

    by franklin t marmoset

He's had a strange career, this George Huang. He started out pretty well with Swimming With Sharks, which has one of Kevin Spacey's best performances in it; but then he goes on to do How To Make A Monster, which is utter dreck. What the hell happened, George Huang?P.S. I hope these makers of many comic book films will get around to Flaming Carrot at some point. That one was funny.

    EXXXCELLENT

    by banallfirstposters

I remember reading a rumor years ago that Rodriguez wanted Depp to play Madman. I wonder who will fill those shoes?
    Also,
Swimming with the Sharks is one of the most underrated comedies of all time.

Vern liked HOW TO MAKE A MONSTER...

I thought it was ridiculous. And we've all seen enough naked Julie Strain, that even THAT wasn't a sell.

I cruised over to Vern's site to read his review and it turns out he was pretty generous. Mind you, he does say it took him three sittings to watch it. I watched that peice of garbage straight through in one go, which may be why I was so bloody bored.

    Was George Huang ever blacklisted?

    by neo zeed

I imagine he could have made some enemies with Swimming With Sharks, which I *believe* was influenced by his real life. I love that movie BTW

I have been waiting for this for years, and after seeing SIN CITY my anticipation got a shot in the arm. Hearing that it might actually move forward has me giddy like a school girl. Of course, that could just be the Adderall kicking in.....

    Franklin T Marmoset: Flaming Carrot

    by comicshead

I talked with Bob Burdon a couple of years ago and he said that he was working on a follow up to Mystery Men that would center on villans instead of heros, kinda like he did in the comics. Unfortunatly I have not seen anything of the sort since, so I doubt we will ever get to see the Baloghna firing, Non sequitur emitting incendiary taproot on the big screen. Would be fun though.

    by frijole

series... Or whatever it was called. I loved the idea, but man... most fo them were just horrid. Especially Larry Clark's TEENAGE CAVEMAN. The only one that was even decent was the mermaid one with Carla Gugino and Rufus Sewell.

This is an excellent comic book, but its pop sensibilities will not translate well to film.

The 90s were good to sell-outs...

    by flim springfield

I liked "Madman", it was a good comic. But the moment Allred sold the movie rights he lost interest and only a few more issues (eventually) came out. The 90s were littered with characters discarded once the rights were sold. Rob Liefeld even managed to sell some rights without ever producing the comics! Even Mignola has barely drawn Hellboy since the movie went into production...

From Dusk Till Dawn and Sin City says it all...two very unusual and entertaining and somewhat eccentric films. I dig the guy for sure.

    "sell-outs"

    by rupee88

I don't think those creators really sold out, but maybe they got old and rich and tired or perhaps just lost their passion...sort of like James Cameron. But art should ideally be inspired, so if the artists don't feel naturally motivated to produce new work, perhaps they shouldn't force it.

    On George Huang...

    by sledge hammer

...Gotta agree with the general consensus, Swimming With Sharks was great, How To Make A Monster was an utter piece of shit (old saggy Straining tits can't save a horrid film) and Torjan War was a paint by number teen movie piece of crap. So yeah, not exactly excited by this guy as the choice for Mad man. Especially given that it needs to be a visual film, and even the one quality film that Huang has done, Swimming With Sharks, succeeded more because of the snappy script and quality acting than because of anything done directorially. In fact the direction in the film was decidedly point and shoot in nature. Guess it really is "who you know", huh?

Sledge, Re: point and shoot in nature

    by mace tofu

isn't that the point! Here take this comic and film the pages like a storyboard, don't rewrite or add anything. Have you read Damnation Alley? Now think of the movie... Film the book.

As much as I enjoyed the lunacy of Flaming Carrot, I can't see that one ever being turned into a film. Still, in my dreams there is a Hollywood with the balls and the glorious stupidity to invest $200 million in a story about a man who fights crime in a carrot mask that is on fire. How cool would that be?

Very true, great way of saying all that. I have come to realize I fit that description. For ten years I was ontop of the world with my photography. I was recognized by National Geographic and won many awards. But all of a sudden it was all gone. When I was forced to shoot, all my images looked like a tourist on a family vaction shot them. One can never ever force creativity and passion. The artists work will just look like forced shit. So I have no problem when someone "sells" out. There is usually a good reason for it. Anyways, this might be cool. I'm not a comic book fan, but I loved what was done with Sin City and I hate CGI. The film just felt right. Hopefully this director can make something out of this.
