I am the new Number Two.

    Oh, man

    by zacharyg

I'd never laughed at a "first!" before, but that one was good, and I wanted to follow it up, and I failed.

Anyway, I am suspect of this project and require further information.

Some things just shouldn't be remade...

    by smellmycheese

and this is one of them. I'm sure it could be quite an enjoyable programme if handled properly but when there are so many bad shows and films that would benefit from a reworking (as BSG received), why mess around with a masterpiece?

"sans any recollection of how they got to the island"

    by mulberry

That's one bored journalist, playing a 'what nonsensical phrase can I slip into the piece'. Anyone surprised that halfway through they change from talking about a vilage to an island (because what we really need is a rip-off of Lost lazily couched in the outline of a classic show).

    Casting No 2

    by mulberry

Actually, this is one of those situations where the normal knee-jerk reaction of saying the name of a slightly hammy actor who was good in another fantasy tv series might actually come up with some good ideas: Ian McShane, Tom Baker, Patrick Stewart, Donald Sutherland, Leonard Nimoy, ALF, Mr T, err...maybe not. Was this the one Christopher Ecclestone was linked to as No6?

original series = great idea, doesn't stand up

    by rreimer

I netflixed the original series, having loved it like a sacred work since it first aired. Watching it again, I realized that (a) the idea and premise are fascinating and clever, and (b) the execution is woefully dated. It SCREAMS sixties--but only in a bad way. The performances are affected, the editing loose, the effect that once gave me nightmares are laughable. It makes me wonder (and fear) that thirty years hence I'll look back on LOTR and think... I can't believe that was--stop! Heresy!!

    by workshed

Some classics, no matter how 'dated' should be left alone. What's next..? Citizen Kane..? Gone With The Wind..? Casablanca..? Even Christopher Eccleston couldn't save this from tanking. I hope AMC throws every penny into this and goes bankrupt. Wankers.

    by newc0253

he would fucking torch the place. seriously, a mashup of the Prisoner and 24 would be fantastic but i doubt the remake will be as interesting. anyways, i am currently getting my fill of mysterious villages from Lost.

You can just see it now. They'll use every cliche in the book and hire a crap cast thinking the hype will make it work. Zero respect for the original series.

I know that I can't expect proper writing from Variety, but jeeze. Dropping the adjective "the" constantly is bad enough.

Anyhoo, I actually am looking forward to this. I actually like re-imagining old series for a modern audience when it's done right.

    by dr lizardo

Casablanca was not only remade, but it was remade as a TV series 23 years ago with David Soul as Rick, Hector Elizondo as Capt. Renault, Scatman Crothers as Sam, and Ray Liotta as Sacha the bartender. Only lasted 3 episodes, and the world did not stop spinning.

    It takes a village

    by bswise

After recently re-watching this, one of my top 5 favorite TV shows, I immediately thought that it was both way ahead of it's time and ripe for a re-make. The description of this project, however, fills me with LOW EXPECTATIONS, and I will only seek it out if McGoohan gives it his unqualified seal of approval. I do trust my David and Janet peeps to get it right. "Six of one, half a dozen of another."

I honestly think this is a good idea.

    by dance4days

Also, since it's on AMC, a channel that (to my knowledge) has no history of original programming, it will be given an adequate chance to find its footing as a series even if it's not a runaway hit.

And as for the remake phobia... whatever. You don't have to watch if you don't want to.

    Can work

    by nudeandaroused

'The Prisoner,' when made in 1967, is very dated when watched today. Not that the points the show attempts to convey today is dated. They are are not. The issues that faced 'Six' and the Village are just as strong today as it was then. I think viewers should see just how much of a powerful and frightening government that exists today. The show can be very relevant. It has to be done right.

    Watching this one Never -

    by gadlaw6

Right after I never watch the Starsky and Hutch, Miami Vice, and every other remake. Patrick McGoohan is the man, it's his concept, it's his story and it's been told by him already. All these remaking idiots should rent brains and think of their own ideas. I hate remakes and the goobers who remake them.

McGoohan was involved in failed attempts at remakes

    by inwosuxred

so damning this because McGoohan isn't doing it is kinda lame. He approved of the idea of remaking his work, at some point he becomes too old to get involved. This will be a new drama that is geared towards suspense and not camp, and is loosely based on the old series story in the broadest sense. The actors, production values and scripts will make or break it, but I tend to think it has quite a bit going for it out of the box, especially if Eccleson is number 6. I just hope the end is alittle less preachy acid trip with monkey masks and alittle more of a well constructed pay-off that isn't too ham fisted lecture about modern life.

This is actually a UK-US-and-more production...

    by dizagaox

Sky One are paying the most money, and they're remaking the show. It will be shot in the UK with a British cast and crew.

AMC are secondary financiers for this project, and will be co-producing it.

What the original was in 1967, this will NOT be in 2007

    by kabong

or whenever it drips onto the screen.

Pump up the comedic aspects, of course. Number Two should be the love interest. Rover should be a robot dog. Yeah, baby! Put a dog in it. And a robot. A robot dog. Boffo, baby. This prisoner guy should be conflicted about his sexual orientation. It's all internal. The Village is where the Village People dance in his head. Don't emphasize the paranoia and espionage aspects. Cancel the female Number Two and get John Goodman on the line. Set the whole thing in an apartment building in New York City. Let's make some magic.

Just finished watching the entire series.

    by one9deuce

I had never seen any of the episodes before, but I netflixed the entire series based on Moriarty's recommendation. He referred to it as the greatest television show ever produced. Well, The Prisoner is in fact brilliant but flawed. The premise is fascinating, Patrick McGoohan is perfect (and is really what makes the series work in my opinion), and I love the opening credit sequence and music, but unfortunately there are a few really horrible episodes. And even more unfortunate is that Fallout is the worst episode of the series. I was DYING to find out who number 1 was, why number 6 resigned, would number 6 escape The Village, would number 6 return and fulfil his promise to destroy The Village. I think ambiguity can work in cinema/television, but if something is totally ambiguous then it falls apart. Anyone can make something puzzling or unclear, it isn't difficult to be vague. Why set up the questions in the series if they aren't going to be answered? Fallout is just totally nonsensical.

    this might be OK

    by mrbong

i am just as much a fan of The Prisoner as the next Six Of One member, but if we are honest the original series fell away quite badly in the last handful of episodes. granted, this was due to the pressure put on them to finish the series off much earlier than anticipated, but the final few were nonetheless weak. if this remake intends to be reasonably faithful and end the series the way the original creators wanted, it would be interesting.

beyond that, i am not sure i see the market for this - as much as it is convoluted tripe, "Lost" has basically stolen a huge number of elements from The Prisoner, and it would be a sad day if any product bearing the name The Prisoner was seen as a Lost cash-in. i very much like the idea of making the next 24 into The Prisoner, though - a logical step, since Danger Man and Secret Agent turned into The Prisoner.

Bill Clay, you might be (perhaps pleasantly) surprised to learn that this isn't the case. there are at least seven working in the Italian porn industry alone, going on a version of Snow White i recently had the distinct pleasure of watching.
