Some new nasty Pirate pics pop up! Pics from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 3!!!

Published at:  Dec 15, 2006 2:56:00 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Can't wait to see next summer's trilogy wrapper-upper, PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 3: AT WORLDS END. Despite not falling 100% in love with DEAD MAN'S CHEST, there's no other series right now that has the spectacle and characters I love to see... not to mention the effects guys at ILM stepping up to the plate again and creating some truly amazing effects.

I've seen a couple low-res pics pop up from the 3rd film... These two here... I don't know where they came from... probably some magazine getting a first look for their '07 preview. I've seen the first before, but not this clear and the second I haven't seen anywhere else. Doesn't mean it isn't somewhere else, but this is the first I've seen of it. Enjoy the pics! Can't wait to see the Asian pirates deal with Captain Jack!

    by darthdooku

It's about time people once again realize how great ILM is. All that talk about Weta has been driving ILM's reputation down, despite it being on par, if not better, than Weta's effects. Seriously, SW: EpIII was almost entirely CG, yet didn't recieve an Oscar. Hopefully ILM will get a deserved nomination and win for Pirates of the Caribbean 2.

couldn't care less about pics from this one, but I will definitely see the flick. saw dead man's chest in theaters and I could immediately see why it was gonna be huge. it was good harmless fun that adults could stomach and chuckle at, and crazy funny shit for kids. so when the kids want to go see it again the next day, the parents, instead of grumbling and making an excuse, will acquiesce and suck it up. hard to write, hard to execute, hard to do in general. kudos to them. it was good enough that I'm gonna see this opening day no matter what. fun for me, money in the bank for them. again, fucking genius.

You are a very beautiful man. Also, according to the writers' commentary on the Dead Man's Chest DVD, the locket is supposed to be a subtle giveaway, so I reckon you're right. They also make mention of Jack Sparrow's return in At World's End as having something to do with the idea of a God being born from the death of a human (I think this is what was those natives were up to on pointless plot diversion island), but I'm not too sure what that means. They were being pretty coy at that point.

"EpIII was almost entirely CG, didn't recieve an Oscar"

    by theallseeingeye

Exactly. Any old effects company can generate a nearly entire CG world; Computer game developers have been doing it for afew years now. I can't recall what the last truly special thing ILM came up with that redefined CG in movies. People at WETA are commited artists and enthusiasts who love their work; the people at ILM are a bunch of yes men who can't wait to be asked to appear on the extras section of a DVD. Until ILM come up with something that redefines CG, (and no, the 3D movie shit is not that groundbreaking; least till every cinema in the world can show it), then WETA will get all the kudos. As for Ep3's lack of an oscar, the rest of the movie being a pile of shit probably contributed greatly to its lack of a nomination.

    CG effects in movies

    by beastie

I think that the Academy needs to start considering films that use special effects to further the story instead of just what is the most technical. You may hate Forrest Gump, but the special effects in that movie were brilliant. They didn't show off anything, and most people didn't even notice that there were special effects. Pleasantville also had Oscar worthy effects. I would like the Academy to start recognizing films like these. I'm glad Ep. III didn't get a SF nod and I even enjoyed the movie. I think Sin City should have gotten that Oscar last year.

I felt like I was taking crazy pills. Surely nobody else saw the movie and came away with a clear understanding of each characters' motivations, or the implications of each faction attaining their goals (whatever they might have been). That's not a good thing for a movie which centers around a beating heart in a treasure chest. I really wanted to like the movie too. The sad thing is, I now feel obligated to see the third one just to find out what the hell happened in the second one.

DMC was great, but inaccessible for many

    by sapno_krei

I loved DMC, but I'd be first to admit the movie is a chore to follow unless you're up-to-date on the story threads from POTC 1. In DMC, everyone is after the Chest for specific goals, some of which were established in the first movie. The screenplay expects the audience to be able to pick up the various character threads as if they've just finished watching the first movie. I don't blame the screenwriters for pushing the story forward so breathlessly, however. Expositions sucks, and RE-exposition is even worse.

    by jollysleeve

Maybe one of the big-wigs at AICN will take notice now. The "new" (actually several months old now) search engine at AICN is FUCKING USELESS. There is NO way to refine your parameters, or to narrow results. Typing quotes doesn't seem to matter. The more specific you try to be (the more words you type) the more results you get. It's fucking useless. Goddamnit, is there anyone at AICN reading this? Is there anyone at AICN that cares, that because of the crappiness of the search engine, all of the news articles more than 4 weeks old are virtually unretrievable?

Why Ep:III didn't win and Johnny depp

    by streakerfreak1983

Star Wars Ep:III never won an oscar for special effects because they sucked. I hate CGI when used like that. It felt nothing like the orginal three. Instead it looked like some high end video game. The best CGI is when you have no clue it is CGI. Oh and too all you Depp haters, screw you. Next to Connery he is my second favorite actor. He compelety becomes the character. Unlike someone like Cage who what we see is what we get everytime, with Depp we have never seen Johnny Depp on screenn we always see the charater he is playing. I hope that makes sense. Granted he has had his duds(The Ninth Gate) but he always gives us another great performance. Well everyone has a right to there views, but it still frustrates me.

DMC was one unexpectedly great film.

    by cameron1

God, I thought it was gonna be an incoherent pile of shit. But Verbinski nailed it. It's apretty sweet balancing act between giving the audince what they loved, giving them something new AND ramping it all up to 11. Ok so Jack and the Kraken isn't a particularly thrilling cliffhanger but Barbossa coming back and the genius that is Davy Jones (in both animation and character) make At The World's End pretty much required viewing.

    by streakerfreak1983

Thank you, I did not realize I was trying to say I knew everything about CGI. Geez, what the hell is wrong with you. I do not enjoy loaded CG films. There is no photographic quality to them. They look to fake because they are fake and most of the CG films like Star Wars(which by the way I did enjoy the third one) King Kong, and Narnia are not created to look like they were shot through a lens. Instead we have some things that do and a lot of things that we know are fake because they are, they will and never have been. I rather have a load of crappy stop motion, because stop motion is working with actual objects and our brain knows that. If that makes any sense. I am still waiting for that perfect CGI loaded film. I may be here a while

    some good cg

    by streakerfreak1983

would be only parts of Pirates. The Kraken, not so much, could tell it was really not there. Davy Jones and his crew, very good. Look at the Devils Rejects. For a while I had no clue this was CGI. When baby throws the knife into the womens chest in the motel room. That was CGI and the pulling out was too. Had no clue. That is perfect CGI. That is what I want to see

    Ah come on Streaky

    by half vader

How can you be so fair in the Sly TB and so completely biased here? Your argument is redundant. And - "Are not created to look like they were shot through a lens". WTF? Hey I say fair enough if you qualify your dislike of CG as a sweeping generalisation and subjective opinion but to then say "I'd rather have a load of crappy stop-motion" is inane for the exact reason that Stop-motion is no more 'real' or convincing in the end. There's also the unsurmountable obstacle of certain situations like the Kraken scenes being obviously 'fake' no matter how they're achieved by virtue of the fact that we know there are no sea-monsters around and therefore no matter what technique is used in the scene it'll never be 'real'. We'll always be aware that it's an 'effects' scene. That will always be so no matter how far into the future we go and will always taint or perception. You want to be tricked by small-scale effects that could conceivably be acheived through a number of methods? Fine, but accept it as your own strange myopia, and don't shit on stuff you're already predisposed against liking in the first place.

Our brains may know that stop-motion/go-motion or animatronics are 'physically' there, but what all the cg haters on this site cannot seem to admit is that you're also aware every second they're onscreen that the camera is constrained or that the movement is not as free or that the lipsync isn't quite there and so on and so forth. You can't tar a whole technique as being better than another in one fell swoop. I love all the different techniques but at least I'm not so infantile as to make comments about liking a crappy implementation of my fave over some other discipline. Best tools for the job, which is based on context. The thing is that now screenwriters have less creative crutches and can no longer say, "Well we can't achieve that anyway so I'll write it out before I get there" like they used to. So if they want to write new things that have never been seen before in ways that have never been seen before of course the 'fake' alarms will go off. I personally like the mix&match approach, but that's just me.

This goes for things like stunts too. Someone recently in another TB was shitting on some CG thing saying how Indy under the truck was just incredible and seamless (I'm paraphrasing because I can't remember the post). Conveniently ignoring the fact that Armstrong kept hiding his face and the angles were contrived to help this (which upsets the flow and consistent nature of the rest of the cinematography), ignoring the obvious dip in the road and the fact that the truck is going s-l-o-w-l-y. Although the clever angle shooting flat-on disguises this as the parallax is negated. Am I saying I like CG? Not necessarily. Am I saying I hate traditional techniques? Nope. And I LOVE that Raiders scene! I'm playing Devil's advocate to try to stop guys like you shitting on one to shine the other.

What about camerawork? We're only just getting used to unbroken cuts and untethered cameras as viewers now (as previously our only yardstick was the motion-simulator ride) and it'll take another decade or so yet, but the same can be said for the original wescams/copter shots being 'unrealistic' or 'playing God' when THEY were introduced. It's all relative. I feel a bit sorry for Weta's Kong guys going after a stylised stagey look based on Gustave Doré (like the original) and being ripped on by talkbackers. Don't make the same old basic mistake that a chemical/photographic or mechanical technique (with their attendant side-effects no pun intended) is inherently superior than any other including digital. And vice-versa of course.

Sorry for ranting at you Streaky but this simplistic/ all black or all white stuff gets my goat and I see it every day here. Sometimes I have to unload a bit like the rest of you. I don't mean to try to belittle you, I just take umbrage (and yes there's no way to say that without sounding like an utter wanker) at the sort of comments you were making, that's all. And folks here tell me to breathe into a paper bag all the time.

Another who thought DMC was seriously lacking...

    by thestrongestone

and was beginning to think there was something wrong with me as the restof the world lost their shit over a seriously mediocre movie and disappointing sequel.
There must be 20 minutes of screentime that can be accounted for by "They fight the kraken and discover that it cannot be destroyed. Then they decide to fight him again. With rum." Another hour with "Jack trips over/falls into a hole in the ground/runs into something." But anyway.
I don't hate Johnny Depp. But I am sick of the Depp bandwagon. 4 or 5 years ago a shitty movie called MI2 came out and made megabucks due to lots of Tom Cruise fans. This year everyone suddenly realised Tom Cruise was a scientologist and Johnnny Depp existed and so another shitty sequel made megabucks while the far superior MI3 did not.
And ILM/WETA are only as good as the ammount of money and time you give them.
