Cast your vote re: Coaxial's "Red Dwarf" coverage !!!

Published at:  Feb 22, 1999 12:37:17 PM CST

Glen here...

...with a quick question re: coverage of the new "series" of the British comedy Red
Dwarf
.

Regular readers may recall MR. HIPPO's review of the show's season premiere, which ran on
Coaxial last Thursday. HREF="http://www.aint-it-cool-news.com/display.cgi?id=3085">CLICK HERE to jump to
said review if you need to refresh your memory.

Anyway, I've been in touch with Mr. Hippo. Through his loud munching of various shrubbery,
he asked if I would be interested in running an ongoing series of reviews about this new series.
Basically, he proposed the following: he would watch the show as it aired, then immediately write a
review of said episode. This review would then be sent to me for prepping and posting, which
would have the review on-line for the world to see only a couple of hours after the episode actually
aired in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Hippo will be swimming the Atlantic with his chubby little legs when several of the Red
Dwarf
episodes get aired. When this happens, his wife MRS. HIPPO has agreed to take up the
slack, and review the eps during his absence.

Feedback to Mr.
Hippo's last review
has been quite positive. None the less, I would like to be sure that Coaxial
readers would appreciated us choreographing these efforts - and that they would be enjoyable or
advantageous to the readership, etc.

Neither Mr. Hippo or myself mind doing this. In fact, I think real-time reviewing
an entire series (which may be coming to only a few American stations in about a month) is actually kinda
groovy. I just want to be sure you guys dig the idea before moving forward with coordinating these
efforts.

So, drop me a line - or post your response to Talkbacks - and we'll see what happens.

    Red Dwarf

    by spe111

Aw heck, why not. I really haven't seen it too many times before. We don't get a whole lot of programing up here in the frozen tundra of North Dakota. Hell, we just got indoor plumbing. But, I have seen it, and it is pretty damn good. So, by all means, go for it. I mean, it is your web page.

    Spoiler and a spoiler-free one?

    by vorlon

If it's not too much extra hassle, could you provide a spoiler-ish review and a spoiler-free one? I'd like to know generally how well-received the series is but I don't want to know specific lines of dialogue.

I agree with Vorlon. If a spoiler and spoiler-free review could be posted, that would be great. But, any review would be a welcome thing. Just my two cents...

    my only worry: spoilers

    by peteski

I'm a die-hard RD fan here in America and probably won't see the new "series" for a while yet - any chance Mr. Hippo could give general, spoiler-free comments up front and then give everyone more details (with clearly marked spoiler warnings, of course) in the later portion of the review? Usually AICN is pretty good about spoilers, but I just like to be careful as an RD mailing list I know of is usually quite good at announcing spoilers, but one poster apparently spoiled EVERYTHING for everyone recently. I'd just like to avoid that. Thanks for asking! -peteski@spinninghead.com

    A Canuck fan...

    by essemtee

Who used to get the Dwarf crew on the Canadian kid network YTV, but they wussed out and deleted some of the more "objectionable" jokes and scenes. Because a) It's a family channel, and b) to make space for commercial airtime. Then the cabler Showcase aired the same episodes later, left in the scenes YTV took out and cut out the scenes YTV left in! And the commercial-less PBS showed the whole uncut episodes... up to the end of a certain season, then they stopped and went back to the first show of the first season! In any case, we get a bit of a smegging bum rap here. And even though I liked watching each new show with a clean slate, a spoilerless review here would not go amiss! Incidentally, I downloaded the preview for season 8, and there was a quick shot of the RD characters... in claymation! How is Kryten gonna scientifically explain that one??

    Dwarf in Chicago

    by walruswaspaul

    From: truesuperfreak
    Subject: I'm so deprived!
Comments: I moved to the Chicago area last year from St.
    Louis.
Yes, you could say it was partly because they took Red Dwarf
    off
the air, not to mention Doctor Who. I thought I was coming
    to
better television, looks like I should have moved to Philly. In
any case, I was fortunate enough to at least see new episodes of the
beloved show at Visions in Nov. (Another good reason for moving.) And
    low
and behold, they cancel that on me! What I'm trying to say, is
    that
it's good to have a Round Table Discussion if you will about
    The
Boys from the Dwarf. If not for anything but to help my
    withdrawals symptoms.

    Dwarf in upstate NY/VT

Mountain Lake Public Television WCFE, channel 57, has scheduled Red Dwarf VIII to start this Sat night 2/27. Their web site lists 3 episodes, plus something called Red Dwarf A to Z.

    Check http://www.mountainlake.org
This has Patrick Steward hosting a look at RD. Has anyone seen this yet?

A review, please, not a synopsis

    by simonj

To my mind, a review should be a critical analysis of whatever it is (in AICN's unique style, of course), with a very minor plot summary just to remind viewers of which episode is being reviewed.

Thing is, people who watched the episode don't want to read about what happened - THEY ALREADY KNOW!

And people who missed it might not want to know until they've seen it, or the synopsis won't be detailed enough anyway and will just read badly.

Either way, big plot summaries are Bad Thigns in reviews. That was the main problem with the first RD review, I reckon. Cut down the retelling of the story and increase the discussion of what it was actually *like*, and it'd be great.

The actual idea of weekly episode reviews is faultless. Brilliant. Genius. :-)

    Red Dwarf in Milwaukee

    by meridian

Okay, folks, RD8 is SUPPOSEDLY going to start airing weekly in Milwaukee starting on February 28th.

I wasn't too confident (the woman didn't seem too bright) at first but considering last Sunday had the final episode of Season 7, well, things are looking up.

So, if you're in the Milwaukee area check out PBS 10/36 at 6:30CST on Sunday.

    by dave lister

Well, its nice to see that WHYY is doing something right, as it took forever for season 7 to air here, and they no longer show the original versions of the episodes, only the crap remastered ones. AICN please keep us updated. And by the way, does anyone know why Rob Grant isnt writing Red Dwarf anymore and where in the US can i find the Red Dwarf radio show?

    Ehhh.. perhaps.

    by neuracnu

I hate to be a spoil sport, and I know a lot of people will harf on me will this, but I'd have to say making a seperate report for each new Red Dwarf episode is a little much. I just don't want to see Coaxial over-extending itself by covering each individual episode; this sort of job ought best be taken up by a strictly Red Dwarf website. We can have reviews of season premiers and cliffhangers, that's cool. In other words, coverage similar to what we had with Babylon 5 is cool. --- AJC

    by gkarian

Any form of episode summery or coverage will be great since the ABC (in Australia)will proberly not actually show series VIII for months even longer as they did with series seven. If possible could *major* spiolers be avoided.

    BBC RDVIII trailer

    by mcmoffa

I guess you all know this already, but you can download the BBC trailer for the new series. It's based on a certain other sci-fi trailer that's around at the moment...

The trailer can be downloaded "for a limited period" from www.bbc.co.uk/cult/schedules/reddwarf.shtml

    Enjoy.

    Red Dwarf A to Z

    by henrik

Red Dwarf A to Z is a clips show that aired on the BBC last year on a special theme night that also included a quiz show and the remastered first episode. The A to Z show featured tributes to the show by Patrick Stewart and Terry Pratchett. By the way, they're really getting it right with series 8. Usually they are either funny OR the special effects look good. So far, this year that are managing to do both at the same time!

    What A Sucky Show!

    by yoshue

I caught this show on PBS here in the states, and WHAT A DUMB SHOW! Painfully unfunny, with actors who wouldn't even deserve to be on a show like ABC's extremely shitty "Sports Night". But even that is not as bad as this British (or whatever country it's from) piece of shit! How you could care what happens on this show is a question which I don't think could ever be answered.

    How appropriate

    by meridian

Someone who goes by a South Park alias would say something like that.

Don't worry, if you're lucky you might see a couple of poop jokes.

How DID you end up on PBS, anyways? Wrestling was probably a couple notches down the dial...

    DUMB SHOW!

    by yoshue

I ended up on PBS watching a very funny show called "Keeping Up Appearances". South Park has a lot of social satire that I guess must be a little over your head. By the way, how did you know that cartman was from South Park anyway. You've watched it haven't you?
