GOLDEN GLOBES 2006 Nominations Are Released!

Published at:  Dec 14, 2006 11:59:19 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here... I'm not a big fan of the GOLDEN GLOBES, but I've always liked their division between Dramatic and Comedy/Musical in their award categories. I just wish they also had a Horror/Suspense category as well. The DRAMATIC category is a little lacking this year to me. The only film there that I feel is one that I'll watch over and over - throughout the years is THE DEPARTED. I really wish BLACK SNAKE MOAN was able to qualify as it is far better than all five nominees. Alas - it doesn't get released til next year. Here ya go...

    by danielkurland

No Damon or Carrell for their movies is awful, as is the fact that the only nomination Studio 60 got was for Sarah Paulson, who is probably the weakest cast member. Writing, Directing, Perry, Whitford, Weber, they all deserved it, and hopefully the Emmys will recognize this, as it seems like awards may be what it takes to save this show. Also, Hiro does not deserve a nomination, he's fun, and enjoyable, but he's fluff, and there are much better people deserving of a DRAMATIC TV series award. The Evangeline Lily nomination IS nice though.

OK, I'll admit it is entertaining in a real downer sort of way but it just doesn't have that "must-see" feel that 24 and Heroes has. In fact, the last three eps have piled up in my still-to-watch DVR list. I guess wifey and I will make a mini-marathon out of them over Christmas. TREK it ain't my boys.

    by supertoyslast

I thought that awards could save this show too. But a Golden Globe nom for Best Supporting Actress (TV) and a Writers' Guild nom for best new series? Not gonna be enough - it would have needed to have swept the board in order to get noticed. And the Emmy nominations will come too late for renewal - unless NBC have extraordinary faith that it will win.

I really am a big fan of Heroes, but that doesn't belong on that list. The concepts and story behind the show are good, but not best TV drama series good. Especially with The Wire nowhere to be found. It still baffles me. I can understand no Buffy back in the day or no Galactica because of the genre, but this is a cop show! The Sopranos continues to be everywhere, even after this last mediocre season. Yes, I realize this is how all of these nomination talkbacks end up, but what're ya gonna do?

    Supporting actors/actresses

    by thebige

There is NO best supporting actor or actress in a musical/comedy division. And there is no best supporting actor/actress in a drama. It's all one category for supporting roles. That's why you see Eddie Murphy and the Prada gal in those categories.

Cohen for Best Actor! Borat for Best Film!

And for the person that complained, I thought it was Ryan REYNOLDS in Half-Nelson. I least, that's what I learned from other talkbacks! Right?

I don't mean a huge thing, but get a sponsor or three, get some little statues of Harry's belly commissioned 'You won the Belly for best torture porn director', and have the editors and a group of selected others create the nominations, make a registration page that ensures single reg only, and then have the TB vote. It would be fascinating, and I am sure Hollywood would actually pay attention, as sad as that is...

You have to be shitting me. I do enjoy the show but it easily one of the most poorly written and acted shows on TV. If it weren't for the fact that it's able to rip off much better comics and has lately pooled some talent in to plot this fucker right, does not make it the best show on tv in this or any fucking year. Battlestar Galactica is a show I'll admit I sort of dreaded but the writing and acting won me over.

    by vinceklortho

glad that got nominated, it was a terrific movie. I know Black Snake Moan was at BNAT and everything and we are all still excited about it playing there, but there were some decent movies this year. ALSO, some things to note about these hilarious Globe nominations: Emily Blunt. It seems each year the Globes picks an up and coming young actress and nominates it for a suprise scene stealer and then nominates the girl/guy AGAIN for a miniseries movie or made for t.v. thingy. Case in point, Angelina Jolie a couple of years ago, Mary Louise Parker, etc. Another missing person is Djimon Hunsou for Blood Diamond. That guy took almost all of the critics awards this season for best supporting actor and is completely missing from the list. ALSO, not one nomination for Letters from Iowa Jima besides directing? Guareented we haven't seen it nor seen a "regular viewer" review on this site but hasn't that movie swept a bunch of critics best picture awards as well? This year, the "awards race" is really across the board. The Golden Globes is all about THE SHOW, hence trying to nominate every single big name actor alive so they can as much eye candy as possible. Fuck, Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt? Say what you want about the Oscars (cough**i hated crash too**) but they are head & shoulders better selection group than the Globes.

Last time I checked, Pirates of the Caribbean is not a musical nor would it located in any comedy section of any dvd collection/blockbuster. Nothing against Johnny Depp, I like the Pirates movies, but it's clear that they love him so much that they will nominate him for anything just for him to be there.

I love Heroes, but never in a million years would I nominate it for best drama. Battlestar Galactica is billion times better. The Globes are typically on NBC so it makes total sense that a ton of their shows and stars get nominated. Yes, BSG is owned by NBC, but Heroes is the IT show right now. The only thing the Globes are useful at is kind of predicting Oscar noms. Thats about it.

How the hell does The Wire not get one single nom?

    by themachinist

    Ridiculous.

A show heads above any other on TV.

If it were a novel the acclamations wouldn't come fast enough.

I hate to say it but i think alot of it has to do with the fact that most of these amazing performances aren't being put out by marketable white faces.

The Golden Globes doesn't want to give an award to Lance Reddick, J.D. Williams, Michael K. Williams, Andre Royo, or Robert Wisdom. Just to name a few members of this amazing cast.

    To hell with these awards.

very good point about the foreign language films being nominated. The Oscars better get that right cause there are some amazing movies that are going to be left in the dust and they would wipe the floor with movies such as Bobby or Babel. Folks, if you can, check out the German movie "The Lives of Others" or "Paths to Glory". Fantastic movies that could get cockblocked by Apocalypto and Letters from Iowa Jima. Don't get me started on Bobby being in place of United 93, Half Nelson, and The Prestige. Travesty!!

the golden globes are flat-out gay sauce

    by occula

when i worked in PR i used to have to run screenings for films that were repped by clients of my agency. the foreign press screenings were the worst because all these grubby little people would show up a half-hour early, eat all the oreos, ask me to go get more, and then blow their noses and mutter through the screenings. if people actually knew who the foreign entertainment press was and honestly how little they know about film/television/the arts in general, they would tune in to a BSG repeat during the globes telecast and do us all a favor. i hate that we even have the globes shoved in our face. what about the peer awards that honestly mean something to those who have worked hard in their fields, like the guild awards? nobody ever knows or gives a shit about them and they actually mean something.

    by captainbitchway

Yeah I enjoy watching it, but the writing and acting is sorely subpar, which makes Hiro's acting nom even more baffling. Just because he's the best actor on a cast of really bad actors, doesn't mean he should get a nomination. Any of the supporting cast on BSG deserves it more than him.

The catagory for the Golden Globes is actually "Best Foreign Language Film", which is why Apocalypto and Iwo Jima are in that category: Because they are foreign language films... not foreign films, but not in English. The Oscars' category is "Best Foreign Film," so they will be submitted probably under "Best Picture".

I'm actually surprised to see that Dreamgirls didn't dominate with nominations; 3rd most isn't bad, but for months we've been hearing about how it's going to KILL the competition. It's telling that Bill Condon's direction and screenplay (seemingly obvious nominations) were snubbed.

Although I'm sure there's still time between now and the Oscar nomination annoucement for it to live up to it's award-slaying hype. It's got 'Best Picture - Musical/Comedy' and 'Best Supporting Actress' in the bag.

I would assume by its leading nominations that Babel will take 'Best Drama,' but I could see The Departed pull an upset.

Gods fucking damn it better get the fourth season. The first four episodes of season 3 were better than any other series this year and you all know it, you motherfucking cuntheads! Heroes = meh x 100. Lost is good but not good enough (despite Michael Emerson and Matthew Fox putting in fucking great turns. I think Fox finally hit the sweet spot this season, he totally deserves to be the lead). 24 was VERY good, a solid season for the first time since season 1. Sutherland is great as always and it would be good for him to walk away with it. ALL the movies nommed are shit apart from Pirates. Where's fucking Bond with a Craig nom? GRIPES -
Bobby: Does not deserve any nomination for anything. The film was an overly pretentious piece of crap that had neither artistic or historical value. What in the world did the Foreign Press see in it to give it a best pic nod?---

Dreamgirls: Does not deserve a best picture nom - Musical or Drama. The film was mediocre at best and is only worth seeing for the performances of Hudson (she's better than all the hype), Murphy and Beyonce (yes Beyonce who I disliked deeply going in was shockingly very good and deserves the recognition). I have no probem with nominations for any of these 3 performances or some technical awards (costume etc.) but the best pic nominations are not warranted.---

Johnny Depp: Bah. Took a great character and made it way over-the-top unbearable. I enjoy JD immensely but boooo.---

Matt Damon: What no props for Departed?? I'd choose Damon over the scene-devouring Nicholson---

Mark Indelicato - I would have given the kid a Supporting nod for Ugly Betty. He's that good.-----

HURRAHS - Lots here. Double Leo for actor (about damn time best actor of our generation. The dude's been not good in maybe 2 films?) --- Borat --- Will Ferrell for STF (reminds me of Carrey in Truman) --- Rinko and Barazza for Babel (OK movie, great performances) --- Big Love and Lost for best Drama --- Office and Betty for Comedy (Betty is surprisingly sharp and funny) --- Baldwin, Braff, Carell and Lee for comedy actors (kudos NBC) --- Sarah Paulson, Perkins and Masi Oka in supporting. All great.

    Foreign Films

    by bastardboy

I may be mistaken, but the Globes and the Oscars have slightly different wording. The Globes has Best Foreign LANGUAGE Film and the Oscars is Best Foreign Film, As numerous articles state, the Oscars require the film to be from an actual foreign country whereas the Globes just require a spoken foreign language. With Iwo Jima moved to the Foreign Category, Bobby was able to slip into the noms. If you watched the live feed of the noms you can hear the gasps when it's name was called.

So if Hollywood produced four or five films that year, starring Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Jack Black or Jim Carrey but they are in Icelandic or any other foreign language and would be at least half decent, no actual foreign film would be nominated that year? Makes sense.
This is a good way for Hollywood to dominate the Globes and shaft those damn foreigners with their original films and great stories.

How do 2 American productions get nominated for "Best Foreign Language Film"? Sure, they speak a foreign language, but doesn't that shut out movies PRODUCED in other countries? Battlestar coulda-shoulda gotten a nod for busting off New Caprica in style, sure.

But HUGH JACKMAN was in five movies this year, and while not all of them were good in my opinion, he was FREAKING FANTASTIC. Prestige and Fountain especially. Wowza. "I'm going to die" was one of the most amazing lines delivered in a movie this year.

Further, all these people in love with Departed (SCREENPLAY even?! WTF?!) can jump off a cliff. WATCH INFERNAL AFFAIRS. It's better. No, it's not as gritty. It's slick, it's smart, and dammit it works. DiCaprio was very good in this adaptation, and he should be recognized for growing up. But the rest of the film should be left in the gutter.

I saw children of men. I give full marks to Cuaron and his team regarding the look of the film and that long shot where he takes the kid and heads for the human project is the best thing in the movie. However, the plot is completely ramshackle, and I didnt buy the dire warning the movie gave off about the lack of children and the collapse of civilisation. The ending of the movie was a let down. It sign posted all the way to the human project or whatever it was called and then when he and the girl were in the boat it cut to the end credits. At the end of the day this film despite its attention to detail did nothing for me. Moore and ovwen should cheer up. I think alot of people were put by the coldness of the movie and its unsympathetic characters
