Lady Sheridan goes down on 300 at BNAT!!!

Hey folks, Harry here with the stunning Lady Sheridan's look at 300 from Butt-Numb-A-Thon 8. For those of you that attended BNAT - feel free to write in on your takes on the various films that struck you at BNAT. We were showing quite a few very very early screenings and it's good to go into detail on some of these films. So pick a film you most want to talk about - and send it on in to the site. And now - here's Lady Sheridan...

My review of 300 for you all... It's kick-ass. Unlike Sin City, I don't feel it is style over substance--it very much keeps the drama and serious "this is for freedom" tone of the book. You could title this "Frank Miller's Braveheart" and not be far off. In a weird way, I wasn't as blown away as I expected--NOT because I was let down by the film, but I felt like I had actually watched it before because of seeing so much behind the scenes footage and the huge promo at ComicCon. I wish I had gone in a little more blind. So if it has been off the radar for you, keep it that way! The sepia-filled camera work is just stunning and it feels organic. I never felt like I was watching something CGI or green-screened, it honestly feels like they are outside, on the ocean, in the Hot Gates. There was only one shot they simply *must* fix and that's where Xerxes has his hands on Leonidas shoulders--Santoro is shorter than Butler, so they shot it seperately and superimposed it. And you can tell, it has that hideous circa 80's blue screen effect. Snyder said they were still touching scenes up and I really hope this is one of them. I was disappointed in the score--a little too "Gladiator" and not enough NIN. It had to be hard to live up to that NIN song, but I am disappointed they chose to use the "female wailing vocalist" so much. The choral bombast (what you hear in the new trailer is the new score) is interesting, a little overpowering at times but it does work within the tone of the film. And there were some nice electric guitars during some of the most modern action scenes. But all these styles also make it a bit uneven--choir, electric guitars and Gladiator...should have picked one and stuck with it. I think everyone turns in a solid performance. I really liked Lena Headley as Gorgo, she was sexy and tough and I think will walk away as being one of the most memorable characters in the film. I think the expansion of her character was a wise one, she gets to deliver the real-life Queen Gorgo's line "Only Spartan women give birth to men" and I loved it. However, her storyline with Dominic West's corrupt senator was very clunky. You can tell this isn't in Miller's original storyline, particularly because when he reveals his "master plan," it goes against real-life Spartan history that it just comes off silly, even in a superhero-hyped Sparta. The subtle love story between Gorgo and Leonidas is really touching. Butler and Headley had great chemistry and you really feel they are husband and wife. When Butler does his final "My queen--my love" scene, I sighed. David Wenham really isn't in the first half of the film much except for his narration. He has some really great fight scenes though--it's nice to see Faramir kicking some ass! He comes in big towards the end though and you just cheer. And now, for my Gerard Butler. He is the perfect Leonidas, he's the sarcastic, determined and slightly mad hero of the book. I would follow him into battle and die at his side without question. Snyder really toned down all the "the king thinks to himself" scenes from the book so that you don't watch the whole film thinking "It's Leonidas--and a few other guys who follow him." He is the Spartan King, but he isn't front and center throughout the film which was smart. Another director might have cheesed that up. That said, I think this will prevent Butler from becoming too much of a household name. This is a movie about the 300 Spartans, not King Leonidas and the 299 Spartans. I don't see general audiences walking out and making him Russell Crowe, post Gladiator. I think it will raise his profile, particularly in the industry, but he won't be gracing the cover of People Magazine. And because I cannot disappoint--he looks really fucking hot throughout this movie and I was utterly hypnotized by the movement of his muscles. But I am afraid Grande Rojo is right and they did hear my squeal of joy throughout the theatre. I imagine Butler himself probably heard it over his morning and went "Och, keep it doon Lady Sheridan! People are watchin' a film there!"

    Nice review!

    by Doc-Holiday

Man, I can't wait to see this movie even though I'm going to have to. Good to hear Wenham getting a moment of glory too - he's been criminally wasted in other films. SPARTA!

I'd be afraid to follow Gerard Butler into anywhere...

by Ribbons's the crazy eyes, I think. He always gives me the distinct impression that he might very well just wheel around and stab me in the gut on a whim. That said, good review Lady Sheridan. Tempered and well-written.

I think I've moved past desperately wanting to see this film and I'm now into the type of self destructive "Oh god, what if this disappoints me.. I've been hurt before" phase that ruins unbelievably good things everywhere.

What I hate about events like BNAT...

    by IndustryKiller!

is how everyone just turns into a squeling nerd. Their geekdom clouds their reference for film so much so you can't trust the reviews any further than you can throw the people writing them. I mean is Lady Sheridan 13? "I would follow him into battle and die at his side without question."??? Gimme a fuckin break. How am I supposed to take a review so clearly biased and so...well...geekily (I'm coining the term) written seriously?

  • Dec. 13, 2006, 4:07 a.m. CST

I coined the term geekily in 1997.

    by Ribbons

True story, I have the copyright and everything. And @ IndustryKilla!: I am also always on the lookout for Plants and whatever, but I found this review to be pretty reliable. More reliable than most post-BNAT dispatches in fact, geekily©-written though it may be. Perhaps there are extenuating circumstances for the Butler love.

  • Dec. 13, 2006, 4:08 a.m. CST

I Liked the chorale in the new trailer...

    by KillaKane

reminded me of Elliot Goldenthal's score for Titus (Andronicus). Call me old fashioned but I don't think a Trent Reznor style approach would serve the film particularly well, I personally think an ethno classical score is more evocative for such dramatic and stunning visuals. Having said that the Liza Gerard wailing bit is played out, there are so many other choices of timbre, looks like a case of lowest common denominator bandwagoning (i.e Gladiator temp track)

  • Dec. 13, 2006, 4:25 a.m. CST

    Check's in the mail Ribbons

    by IndustryKiller!

those damn obscure copyrights get me every time. Also it's not that I think she is a plant, but in an event like BNAT its insanely easy for the less cynical of us to let our mind run away from us and just go apeshit for pretty much whatever is put in front of us and forgive faults. That kind of thing is more in line with what I'm saying.

    BNAT Reviews

    by Doc-Holiday

You know - there are two types of review - the austere, detached film critic version and the filmfan's. BNAT is populated by filmfan's - hell, Harry's the biggest filmfan of us all - that's what sets AICN apart form it's peers. It's not a style that suits everyone's - but I like that reviews like Lady Sheridan's don't just coldly dissect a film - they give you flavour of what that person loved about the movie too. Whether you get switched on or off the movie as a result I find is a more reliable barometer of whether ou're going to like the movie than a sentence that starts with something like "The protagonist of this movie, here ably portrayed by Gerard Butler, carries his pathos as Atlas once did the very globe".

    Her hotness

    by DrSurvey

Personally, I don't find her very attractive, but maybe that is just catering to my personal taste. Sure, she seems to have become some sort of jizz-fuelled wank fetish for those on The Zone, what with her talk of loincloths and dressing up as Lara Croft, but I suppose she brings it on herself. Could have guessed she would have got a review of 300 up on here, she has been frigging this movie since I can remember!

Firstly, I was merely commenting on the comments about her attractivness, and the reactions that she provokes on The Zone. It's true, some of the reactions that she gets are akin to what I said. But if I must, the movie looks ace and I can't wait to see it. As for you Mr. Doc, yes I was banned, however it wasn't because I was abusing everyone, I still don't know why I was banned as I was never given a reason - I can only assume it was because I decided to give a certian moderator a piece of my mind. Ok, maybe the Monica Gellar Nazi remark was going a bit far, but I, and most others, were over that incident when the banning took place. It wasn't over the fact that I couldn't talk about about FIFA 2006, I couldn't care less, twas more the way that particular mod went about it. Maybe I am used to more gentlmanly and polite methods but hey...what ya gonna do?

    Epic soundtracks - not again!!

    by Cat_Corporation

I'm with Lady Sheridan, I'm so incredibly sick of the wailing woman soundtracks on these films. Yeah, the Gladiator soundtrack was great but the relentless bandwagon jumping is so damn infuriating! I want to hear some more Conan (RIP Basil)-style bombast; the worst offender recently was Troy, which really was horrible - except for the instrumental bits, which were great. Come on, composers, stop being so damn lazy! Or tell the studios requesting 'something a bit like Gladiator' to feck off!

Furthermore, how do you know that I don't still grace The Zone? It's not exactly hard to get access to a forum. Get over yourself already. You're proving to be a bigger attention whore than you claim I (Lady Sheridan) am. Incidentally, I've disliked alot of Butler's films--I may like the guy, but if this had been another Timeline I would have ripped it apart. My fondness for a handsome Scot doesn't allow me to pass a shit film. I do find it wonderfully ironic that you finding me unattractive invalidates my review. I certainly don't give a flying fuck if you do or don't--and I certainly am surprised anyone does. But honestly, take a break and find some porn. Release your anger.

To be clear, you weren't banned from the Zone for disagreeing with me when I locked your thread. You were banned for a) the way you handled it, lashing out in every thread you posted in with fits of douchiness and attenion whore-itis; and b) for then failing to uphold "No Hate, Just Debate," as you chose to make personal attacks against those you were debating (on unrelated topics). We watched you go over the edge and decided you weren't worth the headache.

    by DrSurvey

Jehovas Witnesses, who to respond to first? Maybe her grace, LS - firstly, I didn't call you attention seeking at any point, and my point with regards to your attractivness had nothing to do with what I thought of your review, and I believe that when I commented on the review I never mentioned your looks in connection with it, more your geekness for Butler, a valid statement if ever there was one. More it was a response to Harrys comment on your looks thats all. And please, forgive me for gathering an image of how you feel about Butlers and his films, but I can only go on the image that you give out over the net, one in which that you are (for lack of a better phrase) "Gay for Butler." Apologies my dear lady, after all, those who find us Scots attractive are not very widespread ;) But alas, I do not see where this attention seeking comment came from. I made a comment in the Talkback (as they are apparently used for) and someone responded to that, to which I responded and so forth. Attention seeking would be going into every talkback going "The Zone is teh suck" etc... Which, as far as I know, and please correnct me if I am wrong, I have yet to do.... hmmmm I wonder who else from the zone is going to appear, no doubt there will have been some comment about me in The Zone and the "cavalry" will come riding over the hill... infact, I would rather quite like that being the attention seeking whore that I am. Back to LS again I suppose. I do release my anger, it usually comes out in the forms of a post on a forum/message board whatever. Easiest, safest and least harmful place for it to appear. Why I would take it out on my cock by "pumping the moose" I will never know, seeing as it is really for pleasure and not for pain, porn is something I do not need!
