SPOILER ALERT !!

Hey folks, Harry here - Witty4One dropped me an email pointing me towards Marvel.Com's Ghost Rider Movie Blog where they had the below badass behind the scenes clip. This was one of the films that I almost went after for BUTT-NUMB-A-THON this year, but decided to go after 300 instead. I'm still dying to see this.... I have my fingers crossed hoping it works fantastic! Here ya go...

    by immortal_fish

We keep reading in TB how those who complain should try themselves. MSJ has done so and succeeded with the director cut Daredevil, yet continues to be blasted for the studio release of same. I don't understand this, given the Singer fans of X1,2 and Singer apologists of Singerman Returns.Lookit, gang, X1 was claustrophobic, made for TV fare. X2 improved. And SR waws a major step back. Can we please at least give MSJ his X2 due? Please? I see a way more talented and hungry comic fan director in him than Singer or even Raimi. Please. Check out DD director cut *objectively*, judge it on its merits, contrast to Singer's crap, and THEN challenge me. Thanks.

    by streakerfreak1983

hmmm, yeah that was very pointless. Woopdy doo, a guy explaining how cool it looks. Wonderful. Not going to watch this just like I never watched Daredevil. Just knew right from the start it was pointless to even waste my time. Nic was once exciting in his Raising Arizona, Wild at Heart days. About the only film in the late 90's that was excellent from him was Brining Out the Dead(one of my favorites) but that was due to it being a Martin Scorsese film.

Wild At Heart, fine, never had the chance to see it (in fact, never sought it out). And who didn't dig Raising Arizona? Not going to watch this just like you never watched Daredevil? Case in point. You judge this material based upon subjective interpretation of what you *thought* DD was. How does you TB ho0ld any water... except for yourself? And, therefore, ...why write it?

    by streakerfreak1983

Damn everyone from the original Wicker Man should sue for the remake. Better yet make them destroy all prints so the memory of the orginal in not tarnished. Think about how horrible it would be in 5yrs from now if people think that your idiot for proclaming how wonderful Wickerman is when your really talking about the Christopher Lee one. That's is what I am always scared about with these remakes. I hope future generations will know of the orginals of stuff like the wickerman or the omen.

    Ben Affleck

    by immortal_fish

I don't dispute this at all. DD, even the director cut, certainly had its flaws. I still don't dig the playground tourney, the "please don't go" rooftop huggy scene, and the bloody palm dripping Bullseye asking for forgiveness from "the devil" in a church.Ben Affleck rose above such material and his acting gave weight to the character, unexpectedly. Yes, he did better than I gave him credit for. Sue me for thinking so.Fans were clamoring for Guy Pearce, yet I was begging for Thomas Jane. You make due with what you have. Ben didn't suck. Didn't prevail, yet didn't suck.

Yeah I love Aronofsky. I agree with you on that. He has some amazing talent and balls for the films he makes. I kind of take all that director thing back, sort of. I guess I feel we don't have anymore "Gods" of film or at least not too many more left and some will dye soon enough

    by quinntheeskimo

Far too much horseshit comes out of studios today. There once was a time when lots of movies were good (or so I'm told, I'm sadly too young to remember it). It's just important to remember that there is still talent out there making films, their films just don't get the exposure that great films used to get. I mean, how many people do you know that saw Adaptation? Confessions of a Dangerous Mind? Memento? Some, for sure, but not nearly enough.

    Good Lord, not Cage!

    by gorrister

What is with Hollywood constantly casting actors who only have one performance in them? Cage plays the exact same character in every single movie he has ever been in. He has no other personality inside of him. Look at his past movies and compare his performance to REAL actors like Hopkins, Oldman or Depp. Those people can completely disappear within any character they play. Cage can only portray himself in his movies.

Usually I would agree with you, but I don't really

    by superninja

have a problem with Cage in this role. Mostly because the human aspect of Ghost Rider has been a non-character for me in the comics. It's all about 'ol flame head. And Cage's stock has gone up because I thought National Treasure was pretty swell and he underplayed in that film and was somewhat likeable.

    by dick testicle

Not if it's good and serves the story. And I think these will do both. The Ghost Rider doesn't have a choice -- he HAS to be CGI. The rest I'll have to wait and see. But I wouldn't want to limit Ghost Rider to "real" fights with "real" stunts -- I want him jumping off building and killing demons and that shit can't be done practical.

What is with all of your Bryan Singer digresso-rants? I get that you're beating "fidelity to the source material" drum, but it gets to the point where you're not even talking about 'Ghost Rider' (or fidelity to the source material) anymore. Plus, if the majority of us liked 'X2' but "meh'd" 'Daredevil,' then you're not exactly helping your case.

    by childe roland

Hmm. Can't say I see it, but I did rather enjoy his almost campy take on The Punisher (another comic movie that didn't "wow," but really isn't as horrible as angry fanboys want to believe). I always thought Matt Damon would've made the perfect DD. He's played the frustrated, do-gooder lawyer. He has the build to be believable as a gymnast and he can clearly pull off a fight scene (see the Bourne films). Plus, he wouldn't have had to dye his hair. ALl that said, I was amazed by how much I enjoyed the Director's Cut of DD despite the fact that I was watching the often unwatchable Ben Affleck. He pulled it off and that impresses me to this day. If only the director had spread out the material over three films, I think the pacing and, ultimately, the story would've played much better for more folks.

I keep hopping on Singer because he is heralded as the next coming where comic adaptations are concerned. The cold, hard fact is that he does major disservice to the source material at best. But you're already aware that's my opinion. You admit such in your own TB. If Raimi didn't fall within a respectable proximity of the source material, then I'd be hopping on him instead.Am I not talking about GR? It comes down to needing a strawman for purpose of contrast and comparison. FF, DD, and (looks to be) GR are all way more faithful to the source than were X1/2. Yet those films are incessantly bashed while X1/2 continue to be praised. This is why I brought it up. I don't have to stomach it just about as much as you have to read my TB posts. As far as TB folks liking X2 and "meh-ing" DD doing nothing to make my case, well, to quote Clooney, I'm thankful for being a little out of touch.

    Childe re: Jane

    by immortal_fish

Like Carey Elwes, Jane is an unappreciated and underrated actor who also happens to be a favorite of mine. That said, I didn't really care for his Punisher. Not that he was bad in it. The bit with the Russian was very fun to watch. The interplay with his neighbors was heavy handed, but not an eyestrain. The problem I had with the movie is that they didn't get the character right. There was no discernable switch from Castle to Punisher. He didn't become a force without conscience. In fact, at one point during the film he marched up to reporters and made it clear that he was Frank Castle. The Punisher would never do that. He's the Punisher! You could reason that this was an origin tale and he hadn't found his legs yet, but to do that is to admit to the absense of the clear switch from Castle to Punisher. What is a protagonist with no motivation? For these reasons, Lundgren's Punisher was superior. If you look beyond the unnecessary chick cop and rhyming bum, you can see the spot-on characterization taken directly from the source material. I submit to you the scene where he struggles with the decision to free the children. That was pieces of Castle trying to emerge and I found it quite satisfying as a fanboy. Gosset hollering at him when he was under custody was also a great scene.Back to DD, Affleck and Damon, while capable, are too pretty. DD should be dirty and stubbly, not pretty, yet he should be someone that cleans up nicely. I wanted Jane, but had no trouble seeing Pearce in the role. That said, I was amazed when I saw a bruised, sweaty Affleck spitting out teeth and chomping on vicodin. Too bad he didn't have the 5 o'clock shadow.

    by immortal_fish

Castle did have motivation. His family was killed before him. Duh! What I mean to write is how the crucial element that explains why he went from family man straight to calculating murderer was missing. And without that, you don't have the Punisher. He believes that Frank Castle died the same day. There are times when he struggles with a conscience, but those are few and far between. Considering he got retribution at the film's end, there was no clear motivation as to why he would continue as the Punisher. Jane's version, while a decent flick, was actually more of a reboot of Death Wish.

    See, Fish, I don't think Damon's a pretty boy.

    by childe roland

He's got what my dearly departed Irish grandmother would've called "a pugnacious leprechaun's mug" on him. Not unpleasant to the eye, but he looks like a hard-working, hard-hitting everyman (never moreso than in Good Will Hunting, I'd argue) and then he opens his mouth and disarms you with his wit. That's kind of how I see Daredevil. He's a boxer's kid with a brain who decided to split the difference. Anyway, I should probably revisit Lundgren's Punisher. I was so put off by it on my first viewing that I haven't given it a second thought in years. I agree that Jane's fight with the Russian in the recent version was some very enjoyable viewing. I guess I found a little more to like in it as it struck me as closer to the Ennis interpretationof the character, which is my favorite. I had a similar response to The Hulk, since it obviously owed a lot to Peter David's run on that book, another of my favorites. But I know there is plenty of hate for Ang Lee's Hulk out there.

Punisher - it's ridiculously bad. The only thing worth noting is that he's like Arnie's Terminator character, which is how the Punisher is supposed to be, not teen angst + girl (and family) troubles.

...Lee's Hulk was definitely conflicted in its ambitions. But part of me digs that element as well, seeing as how it mirrors the two faces of the primary character. I'm not saying it was intentionally structured that way with that aim in mind, but it works for me on that level. It could definitely have been a more solid film if it had picked a genre and ran with it, but Hulk's always been part monster tragedy (a'la Frankenstein) and part monster mayhem (like Godzilla). The things I thought most out of place in Lee's movie were the comic book graphics used to frame and transition between scenes. They work in a Creepshow to help put the material in perspective (i.e. pulp comic horror), so I can see why Lee would've thought they'd work for Hulk. But the movie he made wasn't pulp comic horror. It was a psychodrama with horrific undertones and a very dry sense of humor.

If only sorkin could be moved to take a chance on the comic reading demographic. Back on topic, I actually think if ever there was a hero Nick Cage could play, it's Ghost Rider. Or, rather, his alter ego. After all, Cage seems to be stuck in the 70s when it comes to his concept of cool (not unlike Johnny Blaze) and all of the actual super heroics will be handled by a CGI character with a digitized version of Cage's voice. Where's the harm?

Before I get into this -- Far be it from me to find Damon pretty. I'm going on what the chicks tell me. Yet you must know that I'll never be able to look at him again without thinking of a pug leprechaun. Happy now? But you're right. I do see shades of Murdock in his board room performance in Dogma. Ultimately, we each wanted different, but didn't think what we got sucked, so we both won.I find it curious you see Peter David in Lee's presentation of the Hulk. I see equal parts Herb Trimpe and Sal Buscema, only sans-speech (which was sorely needed). I write this considering how David's run, the first one that is, mostly consisted of him reimagining Hulk in his grey form. The Trimpe and Buscema years nailed the misunderstood monster angle perfectly, which the film nobly attempted to convey. It had its problems, such as the angrier he gets, the... larger(?) he gets. But it was damn close. Too close. Nolte was a way waicked rip of the Sterns character that would eventually change back into the Leader. Talk about a missed opportunity.I find it funny how some of the biggest complaints about Hulk is that it was a psychodrama, considering how that's what the comics were all about. The old Tales to Astonish covers were so bold as to refer to itself as a soap opera. And hell, Doc Samson IS a psychologist! Then there was the crap about hulk dogs, which was done in the comics. I'll provide a link to a cover if someone asks. Again.I got the same Creepshow vibe from Hulk. Personally, I got a kick out of seeing different angles of the actors' reactions during dialog. It didn't tear me out of the movie at all. There is a knee-jerk reaction that compels folks to oppose seeing something new and different. I think history will eventually shine favorably on it. This doesn't mean I'd like to see it done all the time; only when it suits the material. Here, it did. And it was used in spare, sufficient amounts.Dude, Connelly as Betty Ross? It had me at hello.

Okay, so it wasn't all campy (which wouldn't have worked anyhow), but did you catch the part when the tank turret swings around can catches ole jade jaws in the crotch? The only thing that was missing were the bug-eyes. Asian humor. Gotta love it.The one thing that I had a big problem with (besides the kinda-Creel daddy) was the Talbot character. Ross's most trusted second in command reduced to a program manager of a government contractor. Blecch. Then again, it did channel my natural hatred of Josh Lucas in a satisfying way. Hulk blasted that bastage through a wall, leaving a human shaped hole behind. Back to that whole Asian humor again.

I don't have a problem with the concept of the Hulk

    by superninja

as a psychodrama at all. As I said, I just think the film would've been more successful in its themes had it veered in that direction and stayed on course. The issue is that what was in the film was fairly dry and blandly acted, with another action movie edited in. Nick Nolte's speech at the end is absolutely hilarious, but his character was pointless. Don't get me started on the growing Hulk and the Hulk Dogs which actually make me want to smash something. Josh Lucas's bully character didn't annoy me too much and I don't despise him - his scene getting blown up by his own devices was quite funny. For me, all of the ham was most entertaining. And you have a point about the Asian tone, Roland. Actually this makes the cold romance between Bruce and Betty more understandable, but not any more interesting and I think does a disservice to the characters.

    know what...

    by freefinger

I think they should always try not to go to an established actor for the Superhero genre. We saw way too much of them before that once we see them in these roles... we cringe our teeth... Look at Spidey, at least Tobey was not anchored in the "Actors who can carry a movie" persona before he got the role. He was well known and loved, but nothing where people say "HEY it's the guy from the snowy bushes in winter thing movie!"... It was more of an "hey.. good choice..", and as far as Superman, well I hate the movie with a vengeance, but one thing I did see positive was Routh (well.. if he had a better director, script, not the computer colored fake blue eyes and character development at least...) I think he was able to project the Superman image to some point on screen. If he would've had a story that didn't destroy this icon of over 5 generations the movie would've made him an established actor in action roles. I think Nick Cage will probably not make it past the critics, too much stuff behind him. They should've gone for an unknown and cast him in some part too have that "big actor" in the movie, but not he lead... I'm with Ricky H on this... will bomb...

HULK!!! SMASHED... but not on screen...

    by freefinger

Yeha.. liked the feel of the movie when the screens got fractionned and we could see different angles of the action that was going on, but again changing the character by making Hulk already part of Bruce, and involving his dad and hulk dogs and all the crap was for me the downer of the movie. Were the effects great for the movie, I give them the thumbs up, but again, like Superman, they changed way too much for us to reconnect with the character. They should've casted a smaller guy than Bana, nerdier, make me see the nerd side of Bruce, he looked like a guy who was dating half the cheerleaders in highschool for crying out loud. I think the Lucas character was crappy, didn't do much exept to be in the way, the Colonel was well casted but yet lacked the military direction, made it feel like just some guy doing his job from 9 to 5, not a man who needs to stop a monster who can destroy half a city in five minutes. I'm happy to hear that Marvel was redoing the whole thing from scratch and coming back to the basics, hopefully the Prison Guy Actor won't be cast to be Banner, and if they stick to what made Hulk work in the comics then they should get our 10$ worth of Giant Screen cinema.. If not.. long live torrents, then we'll bitch about it on this talkback!

Closer to the source than were Raimi's Spider-Man flicks, that much is certain.Remember that Hulk had to bear the weight of being faithful to both the comic AND the TV show, which itself wasn't very faithful to the comic in the first place. by immortal_fish

I mean, *NERD* nerd? Sorry, never saw it. I always pictured him as a non-confrontational everyman. I hate to draw the comparison, but he's not unlike the garden variety Ben Stiller character. Not the actor himself, just the ad-hoc, sorry sack, 1-out-of-2 characters he's capable of playing. De-age Bill H. Macy and you'd have Bruce. I don't see a weasley Steve Buschemi as Bruce as written in the Ultimates (though it would be fun to watch him try). This is what made the TV David Banner so appealing; that he was an everyman. Push him to the brink and pay the consequences! I have no idea who I'd like to see play him, but I knows a mismatch when I sees it. And the prison break eurotrash Tepes of Blade 3 ain't him.

It took a while for the synapse to fire, but here it is -- David Duchovny. The quintessential everyman that was intentionally and wholly accessible to anyone that watched the X-Files. For all the same reasons he was compelling there, he would be equally so for Hulk. If not him, then Noah Wyle -- who, incidentally, would make a great Hal Jordan.

Or film for that matter.

    abrasivness

    by parkour

speaking of abrasiveness, I owe Immortal_Fish an apology. I was hyperbolic in my statement, and I regret it. I still believe that Lucas is the heir-apparent to Paul Newman, who I've always wanted to see as Hal Jordan. And I will say that nothing about Noah Wyle makes me think that he could EVER play a character "completely without fear" (one of the two required traits of Hal Jordan).

I don't find Lucas abrasive enough to be Guy Gardner. But, at the same time, I can't think of anyone who I would like as Gardner except maybe Jake Busey (red hair, kind of annoying)

Noah Wyle? Not Hal. George Clooney 10 years ago? Hal.

If you disagree with me, you may know a great deal about comics and film. However, I know a crap-ton about comics and a decent amount about film. Although I'm still an @$$ in talkbacks.

    by immortal_fish

Opinions are as they do, yet I welcome your dismissal of broad hyperbole.Gosh, I guess we simply harbor opposing views of Paul Newman. Nothing wrong with that. However, I'm alarmed at how you interpret his clam, cool, fatherly approach to mirror anything Lucas has tried to do. Again, the only time he has shined was when he played a baddie. When he was on the straight and narrow (Stealth, Poseidon) those films flopped. Even when he was an unlikeable mentor (Glory Road) he still flopped.I grant you that history has room for him similar to Jack Nicholson as a favored antihero, but he hasn't quite reached that yet. And even then, he certainly isn't deserving of a true blue Americana hero as Hal Jordan. Could be worse. We could have Jack Black!

    Man Without Fear

    by parkour

You're absolutely right about Daredevil, both the "man without fear" and Lucas playing Daredevil. Would've been much better than Affleck.

When Abin Sur (the alien that gave Hal Jordan his ring) crashed on Earth, he told his ring to seek out a replacement that was: a)totally honest and b)completely without fear. 2 people met that description -- Hal Jordan and Guy Gardner. Hal was closer, so he got the gig.

Whether we agree on Lucas or no, at least we both agree that Jack Black would be worse (although he'd certainly make an INTERESTING Gardner, but interesting doesn't mean good)

Meh. I've been more of a Kyle guy than a Hal guy to start, and I personally would want to see Ryan Reynolds as Kyle Rayner (if they aren't going to use him for Wally West, that is). Or, failing that, Jake Gyllenhall would be great (and a nice swipe at Spider-Man/Tobey Maguire, since Kyle Rayner was supposedly modeled after Peter Parker)

i'd have to posit the thin red line's jim caviezel over duchovny or bana. from that movie it’s clear he’d pull off the bixby kindness/hippocratic oath thing while portraying a reluctant, please-don't-mess-with-me hero. rage – when morphing into a 7 foot behemoth – is probably less of an acting stretch for him than some might think. just look at this photo, it IS banner to me: http://tinyurl.com/rprsu

    by childe roland

That was some classic Hulk, getting ever-more frustrated and ever-more dangerous while retaining that touch of the absurd that all the un-jolly green giant's fight scenes should have. I do agree that Bana may not have been the best choice for Banner (despite how easy it must've been for him to respond to the name). I always saw a Steve Buscemi type in that role, but I could see a younger Duchovny as well (if it were an origin story). Hadn't considered Caviziel, but he could conceivably pull it off. As for the concern over Cage as Ghost Rider, come on...it's the one super hero character in all of comics with a more unnatural hairline than Cage himself. I'm telling you, he owns this part.

    everything Hulk...

    by freefinger

Point taken 'bout the dogs being in the comics, I still think that the whole thing (including the comics) was one bad idea... Hell that pooch also look like the one in the kids movie "The Wild" when they're in the city and jump into the sewers... As far as casting.. Caviziel?... Never thought of him.. could be a good choice, he has the range to do it, and can look into the "nerdy" look Banner has yet get a badass face if provoked. I just thought the movie was not a total waste, but things could have been better done, the Nick Nolte becoming the other monster (which lasted a huge 2 minutes in the movie - wow.. big ass battle finale, seen better battles on the Golden Girls) and the dogs that were just there for show.. Why I ask, why? I haven't been reading comics since the first couple of months Image Co. came out, but did marvel incorporate Banner's DNA with a genetically structured metabolism that was holding back a monster? I don't remember that one. And the fact that they wanted to stay true to the comics and the tv show.. Why would you want to be true to the tv show? It was done that way because they didn't have the budget to make a bomb explode at the start of the series... That's what I was hoping for... The big one! Then the military seemed "Blah" to me in the movie, they're in to capture him but seem not to motivated to kick some Green Giant's ass!... Like I said, some things were done where I wasn't too disappointed with the movie, but they could've gone for the original stories were Banner gets blasted by a bomb... (Minus the grey hulk - don't have enough of an audience or fan base for that one I think) but then that's just me...
